Myrrh? I Thought He Said “Pyrrh”

And lo, there came wise men from the east, bearing gifts of frankincense, gold and myrrh, which they presented to the blessed child. And Joseph spake unto them, saying “Actually, we could really use some Fancy Feast and cat litter. Most stores are closed for Christmas, but I think there’s a Circle K three blocks from here.”

“But leave the gold. Now we can afford a room upgrade.”

Dana D. writes: “I took this picture of a neighborhood nativity display. Seems the Baby Jesus is missing… or they just have an unusual stand-in.”

I think the cat is just warming up the basket for when Baby Jesus shows up. (Also, I think some nativity scenes wait till Xmas Eve to display Jesus.)

    • Stressfactor December 16, 2016 / 10:52 am

Yep. Some, especially in the Catholic tradition (although not exclusively) don’t put baby Jesus out until Christmas Eve – or even after midnight on Christmas Eve.

Kitteh is just taking advantage of the available basket.

Yes as Catholics we would hide the baby Jesus behind the nativity scene and as the youngest it was my job to put him in the manger precisely at midnight, then after Jesus was born we could open our presents!

    • JenDeyan December 16, 2016 / 12:20 pm

I learned something new today. I did not know it was a tradition to wait to put the baby in the manger.

      • Smartypants December 16, 2016 / 2:15 pm

That is cool – neither did I. I was raised Episcopal, and I think the Baby Jesus figure was set out with the others.

      • Birdcage December 16, 2016 / 4:51 pm

I didn’t know that was a tradition either. Our Baby Jesus was in the nativity scene from the get-go.

30 seconds after the midnight attempt to displace The Lord of Nine Lives with Baby Jesus:

      Congratulations – wonderful pic!

And again, the ‘falling snow’ effect is purrfect.

Am I the only one flashing back to Life of Brian? (I do that a lot this time of year.)

“Thanks, but you can leave off the myrrh next time.”

    • Gigi the cat lady December 16, 2016 / 11:30 am

Life of Brian = best double take EVER!

I think they’re called either understudies, stand-ins or stunt doubles, not sure what applies here.

      • tagathax December 16, 2016 / 12:46 pm

I suspect there are mothers who would’ve like a stunt double for the delivery…

I’m still deciding what’s funnier, the story, pic and caption OR all the comments. Well done everyone!!

Looking at this lovely pic has made me reconsider my atheism for a moment.

    • allein ? December 16, 2016 / 11:59 am

lol…I wouldn’t go that far, but I’d put up a nativity if it had a cat. 🙂

      • Emsthemonster December 16, 2016 / 12:09 pm

Nah just for a fleeting moment and then it passed, I am still a cataholic, not a catholic!

A friend of mine own this set: She puts up several trees in her house every year (usually one big, main tree and a couple of smaller trees in side rooms) and one tree is ALWAYS a ‘cat’ tree – with all cat themed ornaments and this nativity set under it….

        • allein ? December 16, 2016 / 12:45 pm

          That’s cute 🙂

        • Emsthemonster December 16, 2016 / 12:48 pm

This is awesome, I love it 🙂

That’s charming – they’re all so individual too! I love the expression on Mary Cat.

        • Blue Footed Booby December 17, 2016 / 11:31 pm

I have a nativity scene of moose. The normal human one my parents had on a shelf when I was growing up frequently got augmented–dinosaurs, anime robots, etc.

(Slightly OT) – OMG, you guys – I just finished my Christmas cards! (cue the heavenly choir). It’s something I struggle with every year, and it’s SO nice to not be looking at them, undone, after procrastinating all day!

    • JenDeyan December 16, 2016 / 12:22 pm

Congrats! It’s always to good feeling to put a job behind you.

    • AJ December 16, 2016 / 12:49 pm

Oh that reminds me I need to send a few Merry Christmas emails this weekend. Usually I spend Thanksgiving weekend doing cards and have them all ready to go by Dec 1. With all the craziness dealing with my Mom, I had absolutely no time to send out cards this year, sad face. Maybe next year I’ll get my act together sooner.

      • Smartypants December 16, 2016 / 2:23 pm

Oh, you had your hands full! Thank goodness for email.

    • Gigi the cat lady December 16, 2016 / 1:17 pm

      LOL!

      How is Ricky doing?

      • Ricky’s Mom December 16, 2016 / 3:32 pm

He’s doing pretty well, Debg—thanks for asking. He’s taking his meds like a good boy, and hasn’t had another coughing fit like that awful one that sent us to the vet in the first place. My own life has been somewhat curtailed lately, because I don’t like leaving him alone at night (during the day we can use daycare). We have a vet check-up scheduled next week. After that I may feel more relaxed about leaving at night when I can’t find a sitter.

  12. Amy December 16, 2016 / 2:20 pm

It’s not Christmas without a cat in the manger! My parents had a nativity where the manger was a wooden box exactly cat sized. We had many pictures of my cat, Cymber, in the box, wise men, et al. shoved out of the way.

    • allein ? December 16, 2016 / 2:29 pm

I’m surprised my cats haven’t tried that. A friend of my aunt and uncle’s made a new building for my parents’ nativity set (though frankly I prefer the old one, partly because it looks more “authentic” and I used to love setting it up when I was little). It’s too big for the figures so it looks half empty but one of the cats would probably fit nicely in there if those pesky tiny people were out of the way.

  13. sugitomo December 17, 2016 / 12:46 am

Are we sure the cat isn’t trying to pretend she’s a chicken, keeping Baby Jesus warm and cuddly underneath?
