Marvin Returns Late From Lunch

“Uh, guys? I left my key card at my desk, could someone let me back in? It’s the little door at the top of the tank… Red handle marked ‘push’… I really need to get back in now. Seriously, if I don’t clock back in in five minutes they’ll dock me. Guys, come on!”

  2. Dubravkamcvmd January 3, 2017 / 9:04 am

This really needs an explanation! The little guy so wants to be with the other penguins !

  3. Amyliz January 3, 2017 / 9:14 am

Is this the penguin equivalent of “Hey, guys, give me back my hat!” Stinkin’ cute little critters!

  4. Murray C. January 3, 2017 / 9:30 am

Awww, he looks so forlorn. Penguins walking are so amusing and sweet. Truth be told, they’re sweet under any circumstance.

I tried to follow the full link chain to find out what was really going on here, but I ran out of patience. The aquarium is in Baltimore, and according to Awsome Ocean, which posted the video, this penguin was “lucky” because it got to see its fellow penguins swimming (from outside the tank). I have my doubts about the luckiness, but at the same time, I doubt the little guy was left outside for too long. I certainly hope it wasn’t. It’s hard not to see this as sad, even though also cute.

Here’s a happy penguin – we’ve seen Cookie before – who isn’t with the rest of the crowd.

An update on Ani: I just administered her daily pain medicine. Although a bit of it landed on the floor, I think most of it got in her mouth, because she started doing that thing with her tongue when you’re trying to get rid of a strange taste. She’s still sluggish and not eating. I left food within reach all night and it doesn’t look like she ate any.

πŸ™ Poor baby. Hope she’s up and around soon.

    • DebG January 3, 2017 / 10:41 am

I’m sure she’ll be back on her adorable feet soon. Hugs to you both.

      Mike,
Ani not eating isn’t good. Did the vet give you special food to mix? There is a kind of food you mix with water that makes a mush that is easier for buns to eat. It’s called Critical Care and it comes in regular and apple flavor. It’s basically pulverized pellets with added vitamins. The good thing is you can make it thin enough to be delivered through a large diameter syringe, just like you do medicine. Her digestive system has got to get moving!! If you can’t find Critical Care quickly, then use a blender to pulverize her pellets and then add water. Really, call the vet!

I called the vet and they recommended Critical Care too. So I’m going to get some today. Thanks for your help.

I’m so glad 6Rabbits is here for you! I don’t know nuffin bout bunnies except what I’ve learned on CO and here. Holding a good thought for you and Ani, Mike!

        • Murray C. January 3, 2017 / 12:24 pm

Oh, good, that’s what I would have told you, too. I mix it with baby food squash – it helps get it in the syringe, tho’ she may eat it on her own. And it’s something good to have on hand – I always have some in the freezer. And I hope you can get her eating soon. Otherwise she may have to go to the vet again and have subcutaneous fluids. I do that at home for my buns – that’s something else I always have on hand. Sorry you’re having to go through this, Mike.

I was wondering if buns can eat baby food. We used to give Pablo chicken or beef baby food when he was sick.

            • Murray C. January 3, 2017 / 1:02 pm

Buns are vegetarian so they can have baby food – squash is most preferable because it’s high in fiber and low in sugar. I have used sweet potatoes – some controversy about that – but they do love it, so if a bun is really anorexic I’ve given that with the Critical Care. Anything to get them to eat.

It’s not uncommon for a bun to not eat after surgery but one really just needs to stay on top of it. Mike, take sure she has access to her hay, too, and her water. You can syringe feed her small bit of water, just do it slowly so she doesn’t choke.

          • 6rabbits January 3, 2017 / 12:59 pm

I always kept some in the freezer, too, Murray! Plus a whole kitchen drawer of different sized syringes!? So many of my adopted buns had medical needs, or at least had to be neutered, and stasis after surgery is such a danger for buns and guinea pigs.

❗️For any bunny owners out there that don’t know, if your bunny is not eating or drinking it is an EMERGENCY! Get bun to the vet ASAP. Same for guinea pigs.❗️

        • 6rabbits January 3, 2017 / 12:46 pm

Yay! ?? I wish I lived near you so I could help.? It’s hard for a first time bunny owner to deal with this kind of thing, and I have been through it so many times I know the drill. Keep us updated, please. And best wishes for Ani’s speedy recovery.?

          • Murray C. January 3, 2017 / 1:05 pm

I feel the same way! Wish we were closer, Mike! I’ve gotten to the point that if one of my buns doesn’t dive into the food I put out for them they are on the table getting Critical Care. Usually by the time I go to bed and give them heir evening treat they’re back to normal. NO point waiting to see if it’ll get worse.

    • Gigi the cat lady January 3, 2017 / 12:03 pm

I hope Ani starts eating by herself soon, I’ve never had to syringe feed a bunny but I have many cats through the years it’s no fun for them or us but it can make all the difference to a sick animal.

Usually I’m *that kid*–poor Marvin. Such a cutie.

  9. Faye January 3, 2017 / 12:18 pm

I’ve felt Marvin my whole life. Sigh. It started when I missed Woodstock. ?

    • Murray C. January 3, 2017 / 12:26 pm

Faye, you’re a riot! I have had a similar feeling – never felt part of things, felt invisible, left out. But Woodstock wasn’t a touchstone for me. I like that you can trace your feeling to an event like that.

      • Emsthemonster January 3, 2017 / 1:34 pm

Such nice people feeling left out πŸ™ The others’ loss
(As for Woodstock, my parents did not know each other yet)

    • 6rabbits January 3, 2017 / 1:08 pm

Same here–except too young for Woodstock! I always felt I was on the outside looking in.

I can empathize with Marvin. Hope he got to join the other penguins. Maybe he had been out of the water due to medical reasons, and the staff was letting him visit his friends the only way they could?

    • Laura January 3, 2017 / 2:27 pm

Me, too, Faye! One of my girlfriends invited me to go with her, but since I was only 16 I had to ask my parents, and they just laughed. ? So I always felt like Marvin, too. ?

      • Faye January 3, 2017 / 2:41 pm

I’ve missed more things than most people don’t even think of doing!

Oh well. Less wear on the brain cells. No police or lawyers needed either.

        • Laura January 3, 2017 / 4:35 pm

I’ve done far too many things most people wouldn’t think of doing. That’s why I cultivated an innocent face in my youth! I don’t do that kind of stuff any more (and no, detail will *not* be forthcoming–it’s bad enough I’ve told my daughter most of it, just to prove that she couldn’t get away with *anything* because I’ve been there, done that!), and I’m just grateful I didn’t get in the kinds of trouble I so easily could have.

But anyway, I really wish we had some back story on this poor little penguin. I’m sure it’s not a sad story, but the video is very deceptive that way.

  10. Faye January 3, 2017 / 12:21 pm

Mike, please update on Ani. Poor critter.
