Right now its freezing cold outside, but my kitchen is flooded by sunlight…what a perfect place for two kittens for an afternoon nap. Have I mentioned the fluffy, white slippers they would get in?

I hope all the cute aficionados have a lovely weekend :).

  2. Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 9:28 am

Thanks, Yadre! Here in the Philly area it’s snowing, a light fluffy snow and it’s in the low 20’s. Very pretty and we probably won’t get very much which is ideal.

Love the kitties – but I thought they WERE the slippers!

Looking forward to our weekly chats everyone!

What is it about cats and things that smell like feet?!?!?!

I’m going to take the advice of these two cutiepies and stay, well, ON the bed knitting. It’s -18 degrees F right now in Colorado, so errands can wait until tomorrow. My studio is also freezing, cancelling my plans for a sewing day and a Star Wars marathon.

Not to worry–I’m about to finish my first 2017 sweater, from my handspun yarn. I’ve got yarn for at least 3 more Pu$$y Hats, which take about 2 hours each. I’ve been working on a cowl that requires more than a little concentration, so I can finish my Golden Compass audiobook while knitting that one.

In other words, it’s a normal weekend for me: procrastinating on errands (with solid rationalizations), staying home with kitties, and knitting my fingers to the bone.

    • tara January 7, 2017 / 11:56 am

“I’m about to finish my first 2017 sweater.”

      What!? DebG – it’s only January 7th!
(please read with a tone of much respect – and a touch of envy. :))

I myself got stuck on the couch on Wednesday, but only managed to knit half a mitten. So – share your secret? Are you an octopus knitting body, sleeves, neck all at the same time?

      • debg January 7, 2017 / 12:50 pm

Oh, I wish I were an octopus! No, I’m just small, a wicked fast knitter, and willing/able to spend hours at a time in front of the TV or with an audiobook. This particular garment is done with size 10 needles, at 3 stitches to the inch. It doesn’t take much time to knit a small sweater. I should be able to finish the first sleeve tonight and the second one by Monday at the latest.

Should we make a Ravelry group for Cutetropolis knitters/crocheters/weavers? It would be cool to see what everybody is making!

        • Laura January 7, 2017 / 2:47 pm

That’s amazing, Deb! I can knit socks fast, 2-4 days depending on size, but a sweater in a week, from hands-on, no less? I bow before your awesome skills! Are you as fast as the Yarn Harlot? I’ve seen video of her knitting, and it’s so fast you can’t see the individual stitches. Sounds like you are!

        • Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 3:03 pm

A Revelry group? Sounds fun. I’m not making anything at the moment but I’d join. I like to make things up as I go along, so I started making little crocheted bags but I call them “String Pots”. I use a #9 needle and bedspread cotton – it’s very relaxing. Trouble was it didn’t jibe with what I was making for the Craft Guild I belong to so I can’t really sell them with my painted work. Always been a problem – interested in too many things. Sigh.

        • tara January 7, 2017 / 3:26 pm

Aaaaah! I See! #10 needles – that’d help a lot! I’m knitting stranded work with #0s. But I still don’t think I could do a sweater on 10s in a week – even on vacation. ‘Cause seriously – I binge watched both seasons of Legends and still didn’t finish this mitten.
And yes please – I’d join the Cutetropolis Ravelry Group! Would also love to see what everyone is making.

    • 6rabbits January 7, 2017 / 1:46 pm

The Golden Compass is in the top 10 on my list of “Books that blew me away.” (The movie they made out of the book was an abomination–do not see it if you like the book at all!)

I, too, am in awe of your rapid knitting skills!? (Tried to teach myself how to knit a couple times, but gave up in frustration.) I crochet at the “intermediate” level, but I am NOT fast. But I do have great stamina!?

      • Ms Can Opener January 8, 2017 / 1:22 am

My Mom (southpaw) taught me to knit. Once when she was on vacation overseas, I got stuck and went to the knitting neighbor for help. She looked at what I was doing and gasped – “Your Mom taught you to knit left-handed!” Needless to say, I was a righty. After that, I hooked rugs.

  4. Phred's Mom January 7, 2017 / 10:10 am

A gentle, delicate snowfall here, too.
Should be just enough to prettify everything.
Ideal. I do like cocooning in the winter
with wooly sweaters, hot cuppa whatever,
and a jigsaw puzzle or good book to curl up
with. The folks to the south of us, in Virginia,
might end up with snow beyond their norm,
and have real problems. Six to eight inches
is not something to be cavalier about if you’re
not used to it. Be careful, y’all!

    • Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 11:01 am

Believe it or not, I’m making cookies today. We have a party tonight – ordinarily we have a big Twelfth Night Party but we decided to skip it this year because of my shoulder, so some friends decided to fill the breach with a party of their own. Lots of music – pretty usual for us – wouldn’t know how to behave at a party without music. So I’m baking Christmasy things. I have all of my Christmas lights on – hey, if we can’t have snow on Christmas I just pretend Christmas is late this year.

      • tara January 7, 2017 / 12:09 pm

Happy Baking Murray C! what kind of cookies are you baking? Hopefully not too many requiring a rolling pin. Watch out for that shoulder. 🙂
I will join you shortly in the kitchen. I’m trying a “new” recipe called coconut pudding – but which is probably a coconut cream pie. It calls for brandy and rosewater. I’m wondering how chocolate goes with that?

        • debg January 7, 2017 / 12:51 pm

Rosewater will be SUPERLATIVE with chocolate. I make a lavender and honey truffle, with dark chocolate, that tastes like summertime. Rosewater and brandy will probably have a similar feel.

      • Phred's Mom January 7, 2017 / 12:33 pm

Madeleines, Murray? I just ordered a couple of madeleine pans
(vintage French!) from Canada so I can make those yummies!
They should be here by around Tuesday. Can’t wait
        ??

        • Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 2:43 pm

Excellent – proper ones! I had trouble with my last batch, didn’t release from the pan at all. I think it was because I baked two in the oven at the same time – best to just do one at a time, I think.

Tara, I’m making ginger cookies which are just a scoop cookie but this recipe is FABulous if I do say so myself. Everyone LOVES them, so much so I hardly do any other cookies these days and make three batches of the gingers. Good luck with your coconut pudding – let us know.

          • tara January 7, 2017 / 3:38 pm

Yum. I love ginger cookies! Do you share recipes?

            • Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 4:46 pm

Sure – this is a signature (?) recipe so I’m happy that it should gain some fame! I will email it to Mike and he can post it. My mother made this cookie and I re-jiggered the recipe a bit.

  5. AJ January 7, 2017 / 10:10 am

I may be one of the few Cutropoliots that doesn’t have snow but its a little cool and grey here today. Wish I had those kitties here to snuggle up with, might be easier to deal with than our Dobby. Little stinker is in the doghous. While we were out at the hockey game last night he proceded to pee on the portable heater, thank god it wasn’t on. I don’t mind too much him peeing the house (we have tile floors) but the heater, really??? Especially since his pee pad was just 2 feet away. I just hoping the heater doesn’t stink when I turn it on.

Not much planned today – breakfast out, a few errands, and another hockey game tonight. In between I might do some crafts or continue researching assisted living places near me for my mom. Brother dearest has decreed it’s now my turn to have mother since he’s dealt with them for the last several years -ie, running to the hospital in the middle of the night when they get sick, dealing with the facilities, etc. And I agree he needs a break. Plus the better weather and an old college friend are here so that might perk her up a little. Hopefully some place has an opening.

Happy weekend everyone and stay warm!

  6. allein ? January 7, 2017 / 10:32 am

    Good morning!

Last I looked outside, the cars were white but the pavement was mostly clear. That was about an hour and a half ago. I’ve been lying here staying warm and listening to the radio, which just turned itself off.

Yesterday I was browsing the templates in Microsoft Word 2013 and discovered they have a Checklist for Selecting My Ideal Cat and Checklist for My Ideal Dog. 🙂

    • Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 10:58 am

Ahhhh! A doxie puppy in the snow! In a vest! With snow on his nose! My life is complete – plop.

  7. Not That Mike The Other Mike January 7, 2017 / 11:26 am

Happy weekend, fellow popsicles! I’m a bit further south than many of you, but it was a nippy morning all the same. A friend of mine in Atlanta woke up to find a downed tree blocking her street — right were her car WOULD have been parked if she hadn’t thought to move it the night before.

Ani is resting at my feet, following a vigorous session of scratching at my sofa cushions. I’m getting a sense that having her spayed isn’t going to change her personality all that much.

    • Jan January 7, 2017 / 11:41 am

Didn’t seem to change Lily all that much either… 🙂

    • debg January 7, 2017 / 12:52 pm

That sounds so wonderful–to have a bunny at your feet!

    • 6rabbits January 7, 2017 / 2:07 pm

Okay, my two cents, for what it’s worth.
Theo likes to dig, too. One thing that’s helped is cardboard. I opened a large shipping box flat, and anchored it by putting one end under furniture. I made a few small slices in the surface and pulled up layers of the cardboard. Theo LOVES it! He digs in it all the time and likes to pull up strips of cardboard with his teeth! He loves to dig in the corners of open boxes laying on their side, too. You might try that. Or, when Ani starts digging, immediately pick her up and put her back in her pen, leave her alone no more than 10 mins. and then let her back out and show her a place it’s okay to dig. Repeat as necessary. The only thing is, you have to do it _every time_ she digs in something inappropriate. Make sure to give her verbal praise when she digs where she’s supposed to, also.?

    • Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 2:35 pm

No, female behavior doesn’t change like male behavior does. But you can discipline a rabbit – gently, of course – and it will help. Putting her back in her cage/pen area when she’s caught in flagrante is probably best. She’ll eventually get the idea. And it does take a while for the hormones to subside – it’s not an overnight sort of deal.

    • murkle46 January 7, 2017 / 11:38 am

Thanks,That makes rewatching the movie to see the cat something I might do today.

      • allein ? January 7, 2017 / 11:44 am

There’s lots more cute stuff at the link. And a couple spiders…

    • debg January 7, 2017 / 12:53 pm

That is fantastic! It’s like the husky dogs in Chronicles of Narnia, whose wagging tails had to be “corrected” digitally since they were supposed to be fierce wolves.

  8. Jan January 7, 2017 / 11:35 am

Lily wishes every one a good morning! She is currently snuggling on my shoulder and forcing me to type one handed because Kitteh Rulz, that’s why. I won’t mention the silent but deadly gaseous emissions. Oops, just did! 😉

No snow here, but it has been clear and very cold so there’s plenty of frost. I went out yesterday afternoon to check on the ice build up at Snoqualmie Falls. It was lovely!

    • allein ? January 7, 2017 / 11:43 am

      Cool!

The pavement is covered now. Not sure if there’ll be enough for the snow removal company to come out or not (they said we might get 5 inches), but it’s still coming down and they won’t come until after it stops (they might come through and plow the streets, but I won’t have to go out and move my car until it’s done snowing).

    • tara January 7, 2017 / 12:12 pm

Wow – the Falls are gorgeous.
Lily looks cute and warm in – flannel sheets? Hmm… I have some of those somewhere. Might be time to pull them out.

      • allein ? January 7, 2017 / 12:45 pm

I have t-shirt sheets which are good for all seasons. They’re light for summer but they don’t get freezing cold in the winter like percale. Only downside is they’re kinda stretchy which makes them slip off the corner of the mattress and bunch up in the middle. I have flannel sheets but I usually find them too warm so I don’t use them very much. I just need to find the flannel pillowcase for my body pillow. It doesn’t match my bed but the one that’s on there gets really cold. I know the flannel one is around here somewhere.

        • Duckie ? January 8, 2017 / 10:20 pm

I made a fleece pillow slip for my body pillow. I also microwave my magic bag and put it at my feet.

    • debg January 7, 2017 / 12:56 pm

      A hint and two giggles.

The hint: if you suffer from chilly sheets, get a heated mattress pad. They make dual-control models for larger beds so that each party can control his/her own heat. Turn on the heat 15 minutes before bed, then turn it off, and you’ve got toasty warm sheets without overheating. A queen-size model runs about $60 at JC Penney.

The giggles: My Beano cat, now 10 years old, has always tooted when she’s really happy. It’s the funniest, sweetest, smelliest sign of love I’ve ever known. And my long-gone Gaufie sat on my lap all through the months I was writing my dissertation, so I got used to typing hunched over. Silly old bear.

    • Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 2:45 pm

Fantastic photo, Jan – and scritches to Lily.

    • Emsthemonster January 7, 2017 / 2:47 pm

      Breathtakingly beautiful photo!

    • Laura January 7, 2017 / 2:50 pm

You live near Snoqualmie, Jan? Cool! My folks retired to Issaquah, and my sister lives in Sammamish. A beautiful part of the world!

      • Jan January 7, 2017 / 9:33 pm

I currently live about 45min north of Snoqualmie. Long, long ago I lived in Sammamish before it was Sammamish 🙂

Here’s another view of the falls. (For scale, notice the person in the blue coat in the rocks just left of center.)

        • allein ? January 7, 2017 / 10:27 pm

Wow! Took me a minute to find her!

          • Jan January 7, 2017 / 10:33 pm

Yes, amazing isn’t it? Even though you’re closer to it when at the top, you don’t really realize how big the waterfall is until you see it from below!

            [edit: officially it’s 268ft high]

          • Murray C. January 8, 2017 / 10:36 pm

Yes, me too – I was looking in the rocks directly to the left of the cascade – wondering what someone would be doing getting soaking wet! Found her at last.

        • Duckie ? January 8, 2017 / 10:22 pm

Hey, another Cutetropolitan that lives (somewhat) close to me.

  9. allein ? January 7, 2017 / 11:54 am

  10. tara January 7, 2017 / 12:06 pm

    Good Morning Wonderful People,
I’m also watching the pretty pretty snow. I made huevos rancheros for breakfast to remind me that someone somewhere is warm. Although I’m not doing too badly with two kitties on my lap. Jacques takes up the length of the legs (facing the feet) and Swee’Pea takes up the breadth of the lap. Nice and warm. But not for long. I will have to get up soon to put salt down so that it will be easier to scoop all that snow up later and I have a long list of things to do and just need to figure out what order to do them all in. So hard to get the kitties to budge when they really don’t want to though… Do yours do that thing where they suddenly weight twice as much when they don’t want to be moved?

    • Dulcie January 7, 2017 / 12:35 pm

Oh yes! That is quite a phenomenon! I don’t know how they do it but suddenly they weigh a ton. I have to laugh when it happens because it makes them so hard to move! They morph to your body (kind of like the liquid cat of the other day) and you can barely lift them.

    • debg January 7, 2017 / 12:58 pm

Cats can break the laws of physics, turning from liquid to solid to gas whenever they wish and then doubling their weight.

      • tara January 7, 2017 / 3:40 pm

ha! cats can break the laws of physics! That’s how Schroedinger got his idea – right?

  11. Rachel January 7, 2017 / 12:12 pm

I live in a ski town, so snow is not unheard of, but through tomorrow we could get well upwards of a foot, so I’m going to stay in and watch it snow (once it starts). We’ve got a couple of feet on the ground already – this could be impressive! I’m off work next week, which I need rather desperately, so things are okay.

I love snow. We’re having a good snow year for us right now and more is always welcome.

  12. Gigi the cat lady January 7, 2017 / 1:14 pm

You really don’t realize how much you’re dependent on the internet until you don’t have it!! I woke up this morning to find that my Apple AirPort Express had died during the night, so no way to log on to the internet. So we had to go downtown to BestBuy to get a new one. Except they were all out so we had to walk another 10 blocks or so to the Apple store to buy one. They don’t do the old wall plug-in model that I had so I got the new model, so the adaptor I had is now useless, thank goodness the new model doesn’t need and adaptor. Two clicks and I’m back on, once again connected to the rest of the world!

  13. allein ? January 7, 2017 / 1:19 pm

Poor bear. The faceplant at the end is the best part.

    😀

    • fkaWaldenPond January 7, 2017 / 1:33 pm

That was really funny; I’m in a fit of giggles. 😀

    • Haha January 7, 2017 / 1:38 pm

Thank you for the many snorts. And yes the laugh out loud at the end!

    • debg January 7, 2017 / 2:19 pm

Holy moses, that was great. I knew not to eat my chili while I was watching, or I’d spew all over the monitor.

    • Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 2:50 pm

      Hilarious.

      • Emsthemonster January 7, 2017 / 3:32 pm

This was really funny. It reminds me of my own spectacular fall some years ago.
There was a big hole next to the bus stop covered with snow. I walked into it elegantly. It was like in the cartoons, at some point simply there was no more road under my feet, so I just disappeared in the snowy hole 🙂
The bus driver saw it from the mirror so the bus stopped and he got off to see if I was OK. As the passengers wanted to know why the bus had stopped, only the whole neighbourhood saw the flattened monster in the snow 🙂

        • fkaWaldenPond January 8, 2017 / 10:09 pm

?! Were you ok Monster? Holy smokes, that is an insurance claim if I have ever seen one. Thank goodness for the kind, caring bus driver!
I had a similar experience a few years back when I was flattened, literally by a sheet of snow sliding off a tall glass building– a fed ex truck driver screeched to a halt, rushed out, checking to see if I was ok. I was so shaken and freaked but truly grateful for his concern as if I wasn’t ok, well, I would have been there for some time as this was during a snowstorm shutdown.
I was en route to meet a friend for a pint but just went straight for the vodka martini; I was all screw that noise.

          • Emsthemonster January 9, 2017 / 6:46 am

Yes, thank you. It was nothing serious, just spectacular, sliding in and crawling out too 🙂 It wasn’t the most dignified moment of my life 🙂

    • Boosmom January 7, 2017 / 5:46 pm

So, so funny! First belly laugh I’ve had in I can’t remember when! Thanks so much for posting that.

      • Boosmom January 7, 2017 / 5:51 pm

Well, that comment was for the you tube bear video and not your story. Wonder where this one will end up? Apparently I’m not too good at this “comment” thing!

        • Smartypants January 7, 2017 / 9:31 pm

Don’t worry, I think you did just right – the direct replies to the bear video are all indented once (like yours), then secondary replies (like Emsthemonster to Murray) are indented a second time.

Since I’m ‘replying to a reply,’ this post should appear indented a third time.

  14. Alice Shortcake January 7, 2017 / 1:30 pm

There’s no snow in England at the moment and I doubt if there will be any time soon. So, being cruelly deprived of sledging and snowballing, I was forced to occupy my time in doing the last bits of wallpapering – FIVE MONTHS after moving in to the new house!

  15. 6rabbits January 7, 2017 / 1:32 pm

I would gladly give up my slippers as long as I get to snorgle these two! ?
But no staying in bed for me today! Out to breakfast with Dad at 9:00, where we really lingered over coffee talking, so we gave the poor waitress twice as much tip since we took up her table so long. Then I went grocery shopping, my least favorite kind of shopping, which I have been known to put off until it’s absolutely imperitive to get greens for the buns! And they had no kale!! Not telling Theo that, tho! ? Now I’ve got lots of chores I’ve procrastinated on that must get done before school starts back up on Monday. *sigh* I am a World-Class procrastinator–which is, of course, what I’m doing right now!?

  16. N. Fritz January 7, 2017 / 1:46 pm

Hidey ho, virtual neighbors! Just got back to my apartment after two weeks in Vienna. it’s a winter wonderland with about 7-8 inches of snow and more on the way – aaaand, my landlord decided to clear our parking places with a tractor! That makes life much easier! Didn’t go to the bell run (see link at my name) this year – bf was under the weather. But I got plenty of things done during my stay, including drawing at least a small drawing once a day, and writing a postcard to my parents once a day. New Year’s Resolutions… 😉

    • Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 2:50 pm

      Nice!

  17. allein ? January 7, 2017 / 1:48 pm

Just came across this Huffington Post article on the Furkids commercial from yesterday:
Animal Shelter’s Hilarious Cat Commercial Is A Low-Budget Masterpiece

The “salesman” is the brother of the shelter volunteer who came up with the idea.

The entire video was completely improvised at one of Furkids’ facilities and was shot in about 30 minutes.

Furkids would not release exactly how much it cost to produce this glorious video — which has become popular on the content sharing site Reddit — but hinted that it was in the ballpark of “a couple cans of cat food for the cat stars.”

    • Doxaholic fka Ladybug January 8, 2017 / 9:54 pm

Allein, that’s some of the best film(?)/video(?) I’ve seen in a long time. Favorite was the human tube-thing. Loved it!

  18. Patty January 7, 2017 / 1:59 pm

There is snow here. It’s 2 days in, so the roads and most sidewalks are clear. I’ve noticed the cold air has an effect on my bronchitis and breathing. I’m avoiding going outside because of it. It’s 20 degrees, which is actually not unusual for Kansas in January, but the weather 3 days ago was sunny 60s.
The house across the street had a fire, people were okay, cats in the basement apartment were fine. Frog, snake, and kitty in the upstairs rear apartment where the fire started didn’t survive. There were fire trucks everywhere, and traffic down my busy street was blocked on both ends of the block for 4 hours. It started snowing just after the firetrucks left.

In more crappy news, the father of the foster baby had a dirty UA, so plans to send him home have been suspended at least until March. He can’t do overnight visits until there are 2 clean UAs, and they DO test for the chemicals contained in flush kits intended to produce a clean urine sample, which is actually what he tested positive for. My niece is so upset with him, because she has done everything DCF has planned out for her to get the baby back, including couples counseling.

I took a nap on the couch yesterday and woke up to Sophie (the wawa) playing with a dead mouse on top of me. I do not know if she caught and killed it, or if she stole it from a cat after it was dead. Time to set out the mousetraps I suppose.

I’m planning to spend the weekend ignoring siblings and children’s texts for rides and babysitters, and stay inside until the weather warms up.

    • debg January 7, 2017 / 2:20 pm

Patty, I’m so sorry about all the crapitude. Hugs to you.

At least Sophie or one of the cats is earning their keep?

    • Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 2:53 pm

Good for you, Patty – sounds like you need a break – make sure you stick to your guns – tell anybody who tries to lure you in that the inhabitants of Cutetropolis told you to say NO.

    • Phred's Mom January 8, 2017 / 10:00 am

One of the hardest things I have learned is to Just Say No
when asked for favors. There came a time in my life when
I was asked it seemed, every single day at least once to do
something for someone else. Light dawned that it was no
longer My life, but everyone else’s that I was living. I had

Hi everyone. Late to the party here. Millie and I did our breakfasts and went back to bed for kisses and more sleep.

6-8 inches of snow here in Nassau County, Long Island, NY. But fluffy. Being the senior in the house means I do not have to do more than brush off my car. Nowhere to go until Monday night. So snug as a bug and 48 hours of uninterrupted doggie time.

Dog and artwork. No complaints here. Very relaxed. No chores until tomorrow. Happy as a retired lady with a new puppy!

    • Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 2:56 pm

Sounds wonderful, Faye. We’re trying to figure out if we can go to our party tonight – the location of the party isn’t getting much snow at all and the roads are clear. Trouble is it’s still snowing here and it should be shoveled before we leave and I’m no help in that department. Ah, well, gotta roll with whatever.

      • Faye January 7, 2017 / 7:38 pm

Well it is still snowing here. I’d say at least 6 inches. I bummed pizza off my housemates so free dinner for me!

Millie has been quiet and cuddly today. She let me draw for hours while she sat up against my big fat @@@ as I sit on the edge of the bed when I’m drawing.

I took breaks to cuddle her, play and feed her. She is not yappy and is calm unless she gets the night time zoomies. She plays like a nut for 40 min. Then flops down and sleeps all night near me.

Happy I have no where to go tomorrow. Organizing. Again.

  20. Emsthemonster January 7, 2017 / 3:05 pm

No snow here, it is just very cold and windy. But reading how it is for some other Cutetropolitans, I have no reason to complain.

  21. murkle46 January 7, 2017 / 3:08 pm

    Another cat vs human post

    • Debg January 7, 2017 / 6:40 pm

This is so me. I don’t remember kids’ or neighbors’ names, but I know every critter on my block.

      • murkle46 January 8, 2017 / 6:48 pm

        Im the same way.

  22. Birdcage January 7, 2017 / 3:28 pm

Peeps you are all going to be jealous when you hear what I’ve been doing. I just got finished having a puppy visitor at my house for a couple of hours! A lavender doodle puppy! So sweet. What a ball of fluff. But oh! Those puppeh teef!!!!!! Still, even with the pokey bits, he was a sweetie and I didn’t want to let him leave. His big sister, a golden doodle, also came to visit.

    • Murray C. January 7, 2017 / 4:50 pm

Yes, jealous is the word. How does Merlin do in a situation like that?

    • Doxaholic fka Ladybug January 8, 2017 / 9:57 pm

Green with envy!! Nothing better than puppies (the ones you can give back before they wreck your house, that is!)!

  23. Debg January 7, 2017 / 6:36 pm

Okay, there’s now a Ravelry group called Cutetropolis Crafters. Since I don’t know people’s Ravnames, you’ll have to seatch for it and join. It would be a great place to swap recipes as well as showing off your creations. While Ravelry focuses on yarn-based crafts, anybody can create a free account and join the group.

MIke, if you want to “donate” a badge image with the website’s logo, it could help drive traffic here.

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike January 7, 2017 / 7:33 pm

I will get to work on some graphics. I’ve been meaning to create a set of icon graphics for this site/Facebook/Twitter anyway. Thank you!

    • tara January 7, 2017 / 11:03 pm

Yay! Joined, DebG. Thanks for setting this up. And can I just say: Wow. You are a badass knitter! I looked through your projects and I want to make so many of them.
Hoping more Cutropolitans will join us!
Ps: thanks in advance for the icon Mr. Mike. Looking forward to what it might be 😉

    • Murray C. January 8, 2017 / 1:47 am

      Where/how does one search?

      • Debg January 8, 2017 / 10:47 am

Go to the groups tab and enter Cutetropolis in the search place.

        • Murray C. January 8, 2017 / 11:17 am

And the group tab is where?

      • tara January 8, 2017 / 5:17 pm

Murray C. (and all other knitters, crochetters, and interested parties) you need to create an account on http://www.ravelry.com – ’tis free! Then follow DebG’s instructions.

        • Murray C. January 8, 2017 / 6:29 pm

Thanks, Tara, I will do so. Sigh, I guess this means another password, doesn’t it? Oh, well.

        • Murray C. January 8, 2017 / 6:45 pm

I did it – and much to my surprise I already had an account! Just had to change my password – I’m known a s “Mursky” on the site.

  24. Laura January 7, 2017 / 6:43 pm

No snow here, but to the amusement of all, my husband heard this morning and local weatherman issuing a wind chill advisory — for 40°F! Be sure to wear hats and gloves, kiddies! ?

In less happy news, would you believe that earlier this week, less than two weeks after my mom died, my MIL passed away! She had lung cancer so it really was only a matter of time, but we’re all going to really miss her. She was a real character, just a one of a kind treasure. Needless to say, we really didn’t celebrate the holidays. But my husband got to see her just a few weeks ago, which I know helps him a lot.

In happier news, since my back issues are ever-present and not likely to get any better, I finally figured out it’s time to get a wheelchair of my very own. My walking has become so limited and so painful that I’ve had real trouble enjoying going anywhere, but now I should be able to have a lot more fun. We picked up the chair yesterday. A trip to the zoo is in our near future! I’m really happy about my new chair; it’s really freeing. So no sympathy, please, for something that makes me very happy, since it expands my horizons. I can still walk short distances and don’t need it around the house, but it will be great for anything that involves more walking. I had to make the mental adjustment to accept the necessity for a chair, but once made, it feels great!

Have a great weekend, everyone, and found those who have snow, enjoy it for me!

    • Birdcage January 7, 2017 / 6:59 pm

Congrats, Laura, on your expanded horizons that comes with the addition of an assistive device in your life. I’m very sorry about your mother-in-law.

    • allein ? January 7, 2017 / 7:19 pm

I’m sorry for your loss, but happy for your new wheels!

It’s still snowing a bit but it’s teeny tiny flakes now. My car looks like I never touched it, but I think I’ll go clear it off so it doesn’t freeze solid, since tomorrow’s high is only 24F. Not sure if they’ll have to come clear the parking lot or not, but I don’t think they’d do it tonight at least.

  25. allein ? January 7, 2017 / 8:58 pm

My car is now clear once again. When I went out the first time, around 1 or 2pm(?), it was about 3-4 inches on the roof. Went out a little after 8pm there was at least another 4-5. Cleaned off the car and shoveled around it so if I have to I can move it tomorrow, though I don’t think this one will require the heavy equipment. They’ve been plowing the roadways periodically all afternoon and there’s a bunch of guys out there with snowblowers right now. It’s light and fluffy, at least.

    • Rachel January 8, 2017 / 4:45 pm

We get honest-to-goodness powdery snow here much of the time – I’d only seen the wet heavy varieties before I moved here. Nonetheless, it can pile up; it’s been snowing since sometime early morning and is only getting heavier as the day goes on. Luckily I have a covered parking spot for my car – I didn’t for several years, including the time we got 2 feet overnight! And had to go to work! I was late but I did get in eventually.

  26. allein ? January 7, 2017 / 11:34 pm

A little year-in-review and wine tasting with Cole & Marmalade. 🙂

  27. Not That Mike The Other Mike January 7, 2017 / 11:39 pm

Faye sent me two of her recent drawings to post here. I’m sure she’ll be along soon to give us details about them.

    • Faye January 8, 2017 / 1:32 am

      Hi All. Thank you Mike.

These are my 28th and 29th drawing in what has become a full fledged series about my ptsd.
I would like to share that I am having almost no symptoms at this point. So the two drawings do not depict my current state. They are memories that I can face, draw and discuss. I’m “normal” 90% of the time. Learning that, unfortunately, the shadow of my past will always be a part of me. But it makes for some dramatic art.

Water drawing is how I felt trying to function in the everyday with depression and dissociation. Pulled down under water.

Colorful drawing is a depiction of one of my most confused states of mind after High School in 1971.

I am very happy that my technique is back to the level it was at when I put pen and pencil down in 1978. Yay!

      • Murray C. January 8, 2017 / 1:51 am

Truly amazing, Faye, you have every reason to be proud of your work and where it’s brought you.

        • Faye January 8, 2017 / 9:39 am

          Thank you Murray!

      • Dubravkamcvmd January 8, 2017 / 7:25 am

I am moved by the top drawing. It seems to express a lot of pain, so much so that it’s difficult to look at.

        • Faye January 8, 2017 / 9:38 am

Look at it as a victory!

          • dubravkamcvmd January 8, 2017 / 11:31 am

In re-reading my comment, I see I left out the praise and only talked about the impact. It’s a beautiful drawing, which shows that you have overcome the pain to a significant extent. So yay!

            • Faye January 8, 2017 / 1:57 pm

              ?

    • tara January 8, 2017 / 5:29 pm

Wow – these are gorgeous Faye. Are they batiks or drawn on paper?

      • Faye January 8, 2017 / 9:03 pm

Technical pen, Copic Markers and color pencils on drawing paper. The ink is black, the markers work like water color and then the pencils for fine detail.

        Thank you!

  28. Emsthemonster January 8, 2017 / 3:31 pm

Hm, the first picture is painfully beautiful, but I keep coming back for the second one for one more look, I always seem to find some new detail that makes me think.
Iam glad you shared them, Faye.

    • Faye January 8, 2017 / 9:04 pm

      Yay!

    • Dulcie January 9, 2017 / 10:50 am

Yes thanks for sharing. Amazing artwork. It is so good that you have this creative outlet. I know very few of us have this level of skill and expression but perhaps it can remind us to find what we do have to pour our souls into and come out with some level of healing on the other side.

  29. Jlamusings January 8, 2017 / 5:03 pm

    Wow…thanks for sharing Faye!

Hey cutetropolis peeps, I need prayers and positive thoughts for 2 of my 3 kitties. One had a flair up of chronic pancreatitis (poor kitty has multiple chronic things but has been stable and happy for a couple years) & is slowly recovering so we spent a lot of time at the vet last week. Then this weekend my ginger sweetie suddenly got terribly ill (nasty intestinal something) and he’s confined to a bathroom after an ER visit which showed nothing (X-ray too). We’re guessing he ate something since he is usually a naughty kitty who gets into everything. He’s just so uncomfortable and I hate waiting to see if he’ll get better. 🙁 I’m a stressed out kitty mom!
On the plus side, my mother is stable and happy after a hospitalization last month (she’s now in a skilled nursing ward for her severe dementia- you all were so kind went I mentioned her a couple months ago).

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike January 8, 2017 / 5:19 pm

Oh no! One sick kitty is bad enough, but two! Sending healthy vibrations your way! (And congrats on your mother’s improvement.)

    • Gigi the cat lady January 8, 2017 / 6:06 pm

I hope both kitty get well soon, I’m sending positive thoughts from my five cats and me!

    • Murray C. January 8, 2017 / 6:27 pm

Oh, this is terrible – the not knowing is too much to bear. I hope all goes well with both your adorables.

    • Dubravkamcvmd January 8, 2017 / 7:25 pm

Wow that’s a lot to deal with. My mother had dementia for the last 10 years of her life so I know how grinding and stressful that is. And the kittehs – more beings you love that you can’t satisfactotily communicate with in their hour of need.

    • Faye January 8, 2017 / 9:07 pm

      Thank you.

Poor Kitties. I hope they both get well.

I’m glad your mother is in a safe place.

    • 6rabbits January 8, 2017 / 9:11 pm

Sending positive thoughts for your two kitties! It’s so hard when our babies aren’t well.

    • Jlamusings January 9, 2017 / 6:23 am

Thank you everyone!!!! I knew you’d all understand 🙂
I’ll probably know more today. We’re trying to get an ultrasound done with an overbooked doctor today for Malcolm (ginger boy) since X-ray isn’t conclusive. And hoping chronic kitty eats more since I feel better with malc in the hospital- checked him in late last night. And I’m teaching the first class of the new semester early this morning- hoping I can stay coherent for a bit before coming home early to hopefully get sleep!!!! I’ll try to update on a more recent thread if that’s ok… maybe even a pic if I can focus that much

      • Dulcie January 9, 2017 / 10:57 am

Good luck with everything. This is quite a plateful. Hugs.

        • jlamusings January 9, 2017 / 11:32 am

          thanks!!!

OMG Murkle that us too funny!! Embarrassingly it took me longer than it should have to get the joke. But previous to the second that my brain kicked I was so enjoying puppy’s expressions!

      • jlamusings January 9, 2017 / 11:33 am

hahaha! So goofy but I love it

        • murkle46 January 9, 2017 / 12:57 pm

Glad you enjoyed this, same as I did.

  31. Murray C. January 8, 2017 / 10:45 pm

Well, we got to our party last night and it was oh, so worth it. The streets were clear as can be so snow was not an issue. But it was a small group and we sang and played and ate and all was wonderful.

I do, however have a bit of an issue I don’t know how to resolve. While I was baking cookies etc. for the party, suddenly – and I’m not sure why – the oven door to my 1940-something Chambers stove refused to shut. There’s some impingement and we can’t figure out where. I am heartsick to think that it might be beyond fixing. And I had just cleaned the oven interior a couple of days ago – there’s gratitude for ya. I’m not sure where to begin to look for someone who might have some expertise in the world of antique and vintage stoves. I guess Google will be my friend. Wish me luck!

At the request of Murray C., here is her signature Christmas cookie recipe (you can also click to get the recipe in a Word document):

    Callahan Christmas Ginger Cookies

    In an electric Stand Mixer:

1 Cup each brown sugar, white sugar and blackstrap molasses
    1 Cup melted butter
    2 eggs
    Combine these first 5 ingredients

    Sift together:

    3 Cups flour
    1/2 tsp salt
    3 level tsps baking powder
    1 1/2 tsps ground cloves
    1 1/2 tsps ground ginger
    2 tsps ground cinnamon

    Gradually add to first mixture.
Dough will be sticky – refrigerate or freeze before rolling into walnut-sized balls and placing on greased or parchment-lined* cookie sheet. (*best)
Bake at 375 for 8 – 10 minutes until just done.
Let cool for a few minutes, remove from cookie sheet.
Cool a few minutes more and put two or three cookies at a time into a plastic bag with a Cup or more of Confectioners sugar

Let cool completely before packing up.

    • Murray C. January 9, 2017 / 4:54 pm

      Thanks, Mike.
