Fiona Update: Do a Barrel Roll!

Fiona the preemie hippo is getting stronger and becoming a little water wiggle! According to the Cincinnati Zoo blog, her swimming is improving, although she can’t quite figure out how to roll over underwater yet. However, she has figured out how to give her caregivers a playful chomp. Thanks to Phred’s Mom and Lois M. for sending the video.

I would consider it an honor to be play-chomped by Fiona.

Hope she hasn’t grown too many more teeth!

Is this the first hippo soft cronshe caught on camera?!

OMG I forgot that it was called soft cronshe at the old ranch!

I swear, I have learned so much on this site – all about hippos and wombats and Aye-ayes, oh my! Not only is it the online highlight of my days, but it’s so educational. Enterta-tional?

I’ve seen the word “edutainment” before. 🙂

I want to hang around in a pool with Fiona!

    “Look, I’m a submarine!”

This reminds me, there was a great episode of ‘Nature’ on PBS last night (I’m trying to avoid political shows) from their series ‘Spy in the Wild,’ where they deploy robotic animals with cameras among native animals. Fascinating stuff! If you can’t access it on TV, it’s probably available at PBS.org or on YouTube.

I was reminded because they had two robo-hippos, an adult and a baby – very clever, but not as adorbs as Fiona!

Was that the one with the footage of a polar bear chasing down and murdering the ROV, then looking all disappointed when it doesn’t contain meat?

That chomp made me snortlaugh. It’s the windup that really makes it.

I missed that segment, but probably – did you see the part where the elephants carefully walked around the robotic egret, and then merrily trampled the log-cam and the poo-cam? I died laughing!

I just love her ‘ew…that didn’t taste so good’ face after her bite of caregiver. So cute!

We urgently need a gif of that moment.

Ah, the old “let’s put everything in my mouth so I can figure out what it is and also alleviate my teething discomfort at the same time” phase. Something babies of all shapes, sizes and species seem to have in common.
