Weekend Open Thread

Happy Weekend! Reader Victorya sends a cute kitty with a sweet backstory:

“I love Cutetroplis and wanted to share King Haggard, my cat of 7 months. When I adopted him he was actually a brown cat! He had an eye, skin, and respiratory infection and was given a ‘guarded’ condition by the vet. He was also missing a lot of fur. It turned out he has bad allergies and with the proper food, litter, and medication gained an entire pound the first month and his hair changed color. I never realized hair can change color from dehydration and malnourishment before. He ended up having to wear t-shirts to stop him scratching his last rash, and I think he wears them well. ? He actually just graduated from t-shirts last week and is back to naked catdom.”

Actually, kind of liking the look.

What a handsome, healthy looking guy! I’m sure he knows how lucky he is to have ended up with such a loving and devoted mom. Congratulations to both of you for finding one another.

But frankly, gaining a pound in a month is nothing to brag about. I can do that in about an hour. πŸ™‚

    • Emmberrann March 4, 2017 / 10:01 am

      Me, too!

      • debg March 4, 2017 / 10:12 am

        Make it three.

So happy King H is up to speed again. He’s lovely and looks like a pirate in that striped shirt.

        • Dulcie March 4, 2017 / 10:35 am

          Make it 4.
And I think the look is part pirate part jail cat.

        • Smartypants March 4, 2017 / 5:23 pm

What a gorgeous kitty! He clearly won the Hoomin Lottery when he found you.

Now he can wear those little shirts just because they look sporty.

  2. Caz March 4, 2017 / 9:11 am

He’s so cute and he was very smart to adopt such a caring hoomin! πŸ˜‰

My fluff ball had food allergies, and litter box “problems” she would get bald spots and scratched a lot, a switch to food with no corn has fixed all her problems.

  3. Birdcage March 4, 2017 / 9:14 am

Handsome cat and a lovely story! I’m off to test drive a car today, everyone. Wish me luck. I’m scared the dealer will take advantage of me if we sit down to negotiate.

    • belphebe March 4, 2017 / 10:47 am

Birdcage, this advice might be too late, but decide beforehand the absolute maximum you are willing to pay. Don’t forget to take into account insurance payments as well, if you have to make them.

Several years ago, I bought a new car. When the dealer laid out the monthly costs, they were what I could afford, so I agreed to it. Afterwards, I realized I forgot that car insurance would cost an extra $150 per month. I still managed to make it work. If the cost had been too high, I would have negotiated for lower or walked away.

      • maia March 4, 2017 / 11:29 am

I second what B. says. On our last car, I kept half-standing to walk out if things even seemed slightly weird or expensive. It convinced the dealer that we meant what we said about our bottom line. It also gave me a good leg workout! No, just kidding.
I hope the car test-drives beautifully and the dealer negotiates honestly.

    • fkaWaldenPond March 4, 2017 / 5:28 pm

How’d you make out today Birdcage?

    • Julie March 4, 2017 / 6:02 pm

Hi Birdcage – definitely do your internet research before you go. If you get offered anything above the lowest available price, get up and walk away. I just negotiated my Dad’s car and last December. The first sales person gave me a ridiculous (almost insulting quote). When I got up to leave, the sales manager came out and offered me the price I wanted.

Victorya, King Haggard chose well when he chose you for a mom. May you have a long, happy life together!

  5. AuntieEm1996 March 4, 2017 / 9:36 am

That’s one very handsome and lucky cat! My weekend started with the kitten in Alcatraz because she kept jumping into the middle of a quilt I’m trying to arrange. She’s not happy…. She’s also a foundling. I found her with a badly broken femur. She’s nite got two pounds and a tension band in that leg, but she had it. There were fears that she might lose it initially. I would add a photo of the little darling in solitary confinement, but it’s too big!

    • debg March 4, 2017 / 10:23 am

Cats and quilts! We’d love to see a picture–email Mike?

  6. Gigi the cat lady March 4, 2017 / 10:00 am

I’ve been visiting Cutetropolis everyday but haven’t felt like commenting. I’m still battling this virus, I’ve never been so sick from a cold, it feels just like when I had the flu two years ago minus the fever.
As for my husband, he as not passed the stone yet but is in no pain and he’ll meet with the surgeon about the tumour on his kidney at the end of March, keeping our fingers crossed all will go well.

    • debg March 4, 2017 / 10:13 am

Gigi, I’m sorry things are still so sickly at your house. You and hubby have been on my mind all week. The cats send purrs of health and happiness.

    • Dulcie March 4, 2017 / 10:38 am

Oh dear Gigi. So sorry about all these difficulties. Truly hope things go as well as they can for you and hubby. xoxo

    • maia March 4, 2017 / 11:17 am

I am so sorry that things are still bad, Gigi!
Your symptoms sound like this year’s flu bug, which is no fun at all.
Sending chicken soup thoughts your way, and best wishes for Husband’s health, too!

      • Ricky's Mom March 4, 2017 / 11:45 am

Gigi, that is just ROTTEN except for your husband having no painβ€”that part’s good.

What does your doctor say about your illness? It does sound like it might be flu, I know every flu is different. I certainly hope you and your husband are all better eftsoons and right speedily! And so does Ricky.

    • Amyliz March 4, 2017 / 1:39 pm

So sorry for your troubles, Gigi! I hope you and your husband will both be on the road to recovery soon!

    • Smartypants March 4, 2017 / 5:16 pm

Gosh, that flu is really hanging on! Ugh. I hope you feel better soon, and that your DH’s kidney issues are easily solved too.

    • Laura March 4, 2017 / 5:17 pm

Feel better soon, Gigi! And your husband too! Flu bugs are nothing to dismiss lightly; they make you feel worse than just about anything ever, in my experience. And of course kidney tumors are definitely important to investigate ASAP. Best wishes that all goes well with both of you!

    • fkaWaldenPond March 4, 2017 / 5:26 pm

Gigi, I was missing you comments. Continue to rest and hopefully you will be able to beat it soon. I imagine anxiety about hubby isn’t helping– I hope he feels better soon too.

      • Faye March 4, 2017 / 5:54 pm

GiGi please tell hubby that waiting is just awful. Sending you both courage and calm.

  7. Emmberrann March 4, 2017 / 10:05 am

My late kitty was a dedicated feline nudist and would NOT tolerate clothes of any kind, nor collars, harnesses, ribbons, strings, etc. So it’s to be expected.

    • debg March 4, 2017 / 10:14 am

Most cats are nudists at heart. I did have a very pretty princess who loved to wear a rhinestone bracelet as a collar–she knew it suited her!

  8. debg March 4, 2017 / 10:22 am

Another quiet weekend for me. I had a 2-day photo shoot this past week, while I was fighting off a cold, so I took yesterday off and slept all day. Shoots are exhausting under the best of circumstances!

If I play my cards right, I won’t have to leave the house this weekend. Laundry, cooking, and knitting will absorb all my time.

  9. AJ March 4, 2017 / 10:39 am

All hail the King! He is gorgeous and thank you for taking him in. Another lazy weekend here. Hubby is out of town on a work project for the next 7 months so I’m a singleton for the foreseeable future. Don’t feel too bad for him tho, it’s in Hawaii. Can we all say “Poor guy!”, lol. And I’ll be going to visit at the end of the month and plan to visit about every 6 weeks til the project is done.

Laundry, cleaning, and groceries are are on the agenda this weekend as well as some heavy duty relaxing. Puppster has an upset stomach so I’m keeping an eye on him too.

    Have a good weekend everyone!!

    • Laura March 4, 2017 / 5:20 pm

Boy, that’s just heartbreaking that your hubs has to work in Paradise for seven months, and that you have to visit him regularly, too. I feel dreadfully sorry for both of you. /s Seriously, enjoy it! I’ve never been, but my husband used to have to go to Hawaii regularly for work when he was in the Air Force, and he adores the place. And my uncle was stationed there in the 1950s in the Navy, when he was discharged came home to the worst winter Iowa had seen in years, and turned around and went back and never left! Not that any of us blamed him. πŸ™‚

  10. Duckie ? March 4, 2017 / 10:45 am

That cat and that shirt belong together.
I have a wonderfully crazy weekend happening. I have several rag quilts I’m working on, to sell. I also got attacked by a fantastic story idea on Wednesday, which has been floating around in my mind and frequently dragging my imagination to a keyboard. Very hard to quilt and type at the same time. Especially since I already had one story idea I was working on.
Hubby is taking me to Fabricland this afternoon (oh, heaven), and then to a second hand bookstore. He is finally back at work and has given me a budgeted shopping spree for my birthday. Anything I want, within budget. Having been a university student, I am GREAT at fitting a lot into a small budget!
Off for a crazy day. ?

    • maia March 4, 2017 / 11:33 am

Lots of creativity in your weekend! And Happy Birthday!

    • Smartypants March 4, 2017 / 5:18 pm

Sounds like a delightful weekend, Duckie – have fun!

      …oh, and Happy Birthday!

    • Faye March 4, 2017 / 5:57 pm

Fabric and books! Life’s good. Happy Birthday!

  11. maia March 4, 2017 / 11:23 am

“Naked catdom”- I love it! My kitty literally flattens out if I ever try to put anything on her.
I’m so glad that you and King Haggard found each other. Is he named for the character in The Last Unicorn?

    • Victorya March 10, 2017 / 4:07 pm

Yes, actually, he is! Because he was so Haggard when I first got him and just sat in the window watching the world three floors down πŸ™‚

  12. allein ? March 4, 2017 / 12:04 pm

Happy Saturday! I had this gif here for a while; didn’t realize it was from an Oscar nominee! Now I need to see the movie!

This weekend I am determined to finish this library book which is way overdue now. I took a break to read a digital advance reader copy of another book that was on my tablet and about to expire (I thought I had until mid-March, but I looked at it last weekend and realized it expired on Feb 28th.. Fun fact: If you change the date setting on your tablet to, say, Monday, the book that expires on Tuesday will not disappear on you, even though it’s Wednesday. πŸ˜‰

I am also determined to clean something (anything!) in my house.

    —–
    So a debate…

I asked my brother what he wants for his birthday, and he sent me three book titles. One came out last month, the others come out in April and May. I bought the one that was in the store to give him on his birthday, and preordered the other two and had them shipped to his house, so he’ll get them when they are released. I’m debating if I should tell him they’re coming, or just let him be surprised when they show up. I don’t know how likely he is to preorder them for himself if he doesn’t know they’re coming; hopefully he’d just wait until they come out, by which time he’ll have them in his mailbox.

PS I think the t shirt is perfect.

    • dubravkamcvmd March 4, 2017 / 12:12 pm

Definitely tell him. You’ll just worry otherwise.

    • Duckie ? March 4, 2017 / 3:53 pm

Tell him you’re getting them, but don’t say how. It will still be a surprise.

      • Faye March 4, 2017 / 5:59 pm

        That’s perfect!

    • Murray C. March 5, 2017 / 11:34 pm

Yes, I want to see this movie, too – very cute.

  13. Boosmom March 4, 2017 / 12:24 pm

Beautiful cat and a great surprise for all your efforts in treating him.

Gigi-hope things are better for you soon.

I’m into my second week of the FLU! I read the 10 signs of the flu and high fever was tops on the list. I didn’t have fever that registered on the thermometer at all, so figured this “virus” would go away in a week. Saw the doctor yesterday and found out that “every flu is different”. Huh? Cancelled three appointments and my volunteer job at the hospital last week, and three more and volunteer jobs this coming week.

Dog, who was raised without much human contact his first two years, has no empathy. He thinks if I’m up it’s time to play. Cat may not have empathy, but, cuddles and sleeps against me if I stay in one place long enough. Hope this is strictly a “people” flu and my critters stay healthy. Hope all of you and your critters stay healthy too.

    • allein ? March 4, 2017 / 12:49 pm

Be grateful for no fever. I’ve had the flu once in my life and the fever was the worst part – 103.8 when I woke up the day I went to the doctor. My mom had to come get me because there was no way I could drive; I could barely even sit up in a chair in the doctor’s waiting room. I’ve gotten a flu shot every year since but one (when there was a shortage of vaccine and my workplace had to cancel it).

Hope everyone is feeling better soon!

  14. Laura March 4, 2017 / 5:32 pm

Wow, too much flu going around. You have my sympathy, Boosmom; I had the bad flu once, and was flattened for two weeks. Got back to work for one day and then promptly got serious strep throat, temp of 104F (40c), and was flattened for another two weeks. I’ve been faithful about flu shots ever since. For me, the worst part was hurting all over. And no appetite. I’d eat one bite of food at every meal; that was literally all I could manage. And I didn’t need to lose weight in those days! I was a stick by the time I was well; all my clothes hung on me. If only I could get the same result without the same cause today!

Unfortunately, flu shots don’t work on mild flu-like viruses. My husband had a low fever-hurting all over-upset innards bug for a couple of days two weeks ago, and it was my turn this last week. I was just grateful that work was still so slow. I’m feeling mostly better now, and I actually have some decent work coming up with the second small company I transcribe for, so things are looking up. At least our dogs are both very much people-oriented so I’ve had at least one of them by my side the whole time, which is always comforting when I don’t have a kitty to snuggle. Especially a gorgeous one like King Haggard! He just might need to be renamed since he’s no longer haggard-looking!

My husband has been looking for something he could do just with Sebastian, our cocker, since he’s not therapy dog material and can’t go along when Melody goes on her various therapy visits. He finally found something he’s going to investigate. It’s designed for dogs that were bred to hunt rats. They call it barn hunts. A rat is put into a dog-proof plastic tube (with air holes, natch) and then buried somewhere in straw, and the dogs are timed on sniffing it out. Since Sebastian *adores* sniffing out anything like lizards or squirrels and alerted us twice to the rats that had gotten in our house (that are now GONE), he ought to love it! Now to find events in our area. I think he’d have as much of a blast doing that as Melody does doing her therapy thing, especially her weekly visit to a school.

I hope everyone GETS well and STAYS well! Have a good week, all!

  15. Stinky-Inky March 4, 2017 / 7:05 pm

    To Victorya:
He is a handsome boy. My kitty has allergies as well. I’ve dealt with all food stuff and he’s on an LID Turkey, which has eliminated most of his issues. I wonder what kind of litter you use that helps with allergies? I’ve started using CatSpot and seems to have improved his skin. He has a stainless steel litter pan and I scoop several times a day and dump and scrub once a week.

    Thanks

    • Victorya March 10, 2017 / 4:11 pm

I realized today I’ve been behind on my cutetropolis viewing (I usually use it as my break at work) and lo and behold King Haggard was featured!

To answer your question, I use dr. Elsey’s Precious Ultra Cat litter – pure clay, very little to no dust, no perfumes and thus, no more sneezing or itching after. He’s actually allergic to turkey, chicken, beef (that was a gross one to discover. So. Much. Vomit.) so is on a raw diet of duck, lamb, sometimes venison, and quail with supplements (it’s already mixed in where I buy the raw food). He’s loving it, if it did garner some double takes at the laundry room as he’d get blood on his t-shirts.

      • Stinky-Inky March 18, 2017 / 3:18 pm

        Thank you!

  16. Murray C. March 4, 2017 / 8:39 pm

Hi, everyone, – gorgeous Kitty – maybe Merle would be a good name – King Merle – Today is Merle Haggard’s birthday, consequently the suggestion.

GiGi, feel better, hope the hubby does well – and the rest of you who’ve been suffering various cruddy things, I hope all is well very soon. I, too, have something but can’t figure out what – it’s been coming on for days.

Had a great time today in Rumson, NJ – a dear friend of over 45 years who is 87 was Bar Mitzvah’d – I mentioned it the other day, so pardon me if I’m repetitious. It was a great event with a huge number of family and friends gathering after for lunch at a local restaurant – saw people I hadn’t seen in 20 or so years. Many happy hours of laughter and love represented in that room today.

  17. Murray C. March 4, 2017 / 9:29 pm

Mike, I’ve been getting these weird posts about web designing attached to a post about Obiwankenobi from last year (a derpy little dog) there have been quite a few of them and I thought you should know about it – it doesn’t seem normal.

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike March 4, 2017 / 9:35 pm

Yes, I’ve been spotting and deleting them. I disabled a system for blocking “comment spam,” which is what you saw. I just want to experiment with alternate ways of dealing with it to see if I like them better.

  18. Not That Mike The Other Mike March 5, 2017 / 5:47 pm

I did a community thing this weekend: The housing community where I live holds a plant festival every other year in which residents can get free plants for their yards. I volunteered to help with setup and tear down, which meant I got a few extra plants. They’re parked in my yard now while I figure out what I’m going to do with them. Ani seems rather interested in them.

    • fkaWaldenPond March 5, 2017 / 7:08 pm

When I initially glanced at the photo before reading I thought Ani was garden statuary!! Mike, you’ve ‘done right some good’ with that bun. What a wonderful photo! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
And I surmise growing season is starting down there? More info please– ie when you start planting etc. I can make out Impatiens.. but the others I am not quite sure. What else is there, (besides a lovely, gorgeous lady bun.)

      • Boosmom March 5, 2017 / 10:32 pm

She is definitely a gorgeous bunny!

    • Murray C. March 5, 2017 / 11:35 pm

Ani is gorgeous and beautifully svelte – great dewlap!

  19. allein ? March 5, 2017 / 10:46 pm

It is 26 degrees outside and the people in one of the townhouses in my building have both upstairs front windows wide open with fans running in them.

I did not finish my book but I did clean up the kitchen some and take out the trash and recycling. Then I got the mail from yesterday and noticed the neighbor’s windows (which are actually pretty much always open but it was really cold so I came back in and checked to see what the temperature was. I don’t know how they can stand it).

Also, to the neighbor, whoever you are: the trash collectors are not going to take your three foot television from the garbage corral. (Just like they didn’t take the pile of paint cans that have been sitting in there for the past year or more.) Take it to the dump yourself or wait until the dumpster comes again. Lazy jerks.
