Fiona Update: Getting a Bit Runny

Fionaphile Lois M. has news of our favorite hippo: “Fiona now has a new territory to explore. She’s most curious as to what those ‘blue’ things are and probably knows there’s more behind them than they’re letting her get to. But love seeing those chubby, short legs scamper!”

Oh my goodness – the trotting! Yep, I squee’d out loud.

Was someone clapping or was that her feet slapping the floor?

Thanks, Mike, for quoting the comments I submitted with this latest video. I’d say the sound was one of the attendants clapping as Fiona ran. I’m definitely NOT as good with comments as so many people in this group. I don’t have an imaginative gene that’s for sure!!

Thanks Mike! I think she’s figured out what the camera is for, don’t you? What a ham! 😀

She really is the cutest! On the Cincy Zoo website, there are tons of still pix of her that are unbelievably cute.

      THAT…is an incredibly adorrable photo!?

OMG little Fiona’s bursts of speed are about as long as mine! That is to say, short.

My #TeamFiona sweatshirt has been shipped! I may never take it off.

I went running for the first time this year on Saturday. I deliberately went early in the morning with the hope that noone would see me running like a fat dinosaur.
The first one to overtake me was an 80 year – old marathon runner lady, then came a young guy who runs supermarathons and a few minutes later a greyhound or a whippet.
I have never thought dogs are capable of such speed.
I felt like a total failure and walked home, I think if I ran a bit more, maybe Fiona would have also passed me giggling 🙂

Getting to run with Fiona sounds like a good reason to keep it up if you ask me!

Emsthemonster, I started nordic walking a few months ago, and dogs outwalk me on regular basis ☺ If I tried to run, I’d probably die after 15 minutes ?

        • Emsthemonster March 26, 2017 / 4:51 pm

Well, it is easier for the dogs with 4 legs 🙂

My #TeamFiona t-shirt has shipped, too! I can’t wait! And Fiona is, if it’s even possible, getting cuter by the day. Who knew a baby hippo could be that insanely adorable?

And we have a greyhound. I know it’s hard to believe how fast they can be, isn’t it? Our silly girl could easily outrun Usain Bolt, though. Greyhounds are one of the top 3 fastest land animals, I believe, and definitely the fastest dog. They just *fly*!

      • Ricky's Mom March 26, 2017 / 7:04 pm

I think Cheetahs are the fastest cat. What does that leave … roadrunners? Ostriches? Oh, now I have to go look it up. (Looks it up.)

So, it depends on how you set the parameters, but here’s one list: http://www.conservationinstitute.org/10-fastest-animals-on-earth/

Cheetahs and greyhounds are on this list. Birds that are listed are flying speed, not running speed.

They’re all faster than I am.

        • Laura March 27, 2017 / 12:09 am

Melody is so fast that when she kicks it into high gear at the huge dog park where she has room to really RUN, she goes so fast I can’t even track her fast enough to film her accurately. It just amazes everyone else there, too; everybody seems to stop simultaneously and just stare at her (and any other greyhounds who have joined her) with mouths open.

Fortunately, she’s figured out that she’s the fastest thing she’s likely to ever run into, so when she’s running with other dogs she’s very careful to keep her speed down so she can stay *just* in front of them — until they annoy her, at which point she just cranks up a burst of speed and takes off. The dogs that annoyed her usually stop running and just stand there and stare at her, too. It seems to be the universal reaction. 😀

Haha, I’ve seen a grayhound give a border collie (previously the fastest thing at the dog park) a lesson in the true meaning of speed. Poor collie stood there doing a sad baroo.

            • Laura March 27, 2017 / 10:22 am

Yes, border collies think they’re the fastest thing going, until they run into a greyhound. It’s pretty entertaining.

We had the opposite. Our Newfie Cedar was built for endurance. He had not a fast bone in his body but would hike for miles with us carrying his own pack. He didn’t “win” at puppy school because although he executed everything beautifully, it took a good while for his rump to actually hit the ground for a sit.
He had a best bud that was a border collie. Let them loose in a field and the collie would run ovals around Cedar. Cedar would lope a couple steps towards him when he got close, wait for him to come round again and lope a couple steps that way. It was the. Funniest. Thing. To. Watch. Ever!

The question is – what is hip-po?
