Mother Nature and Mike together…what an awesome combination!
Hear, hear!
Does anyone remember WTF Evolution? That site was hilarious. The pom pom crab would have been perfect there.
I loved that site! I went through the entire thing, start to finish, and got the book, which entertained me for months — I haven’t found it since we moved, but I’m sure it’s around here somewhere — and it may be time to go back and go through the whole thing again. There are such creative people on the internet!
I’d never heard of it. Turns out it’s still around, at least sort of. Not much in the way of recent posts, except to plug the book. https://wtfevolution.tumblr.com
I love the hyrax post.
I did not know how incomplete my life was until I checked out that link! WHY did I not know of this before?! Must. Purchase. Book. ASAP!
Happy to have contributed!
What is it doing to those poor sea anemones?
No, really, between this and the Nudibranches, who knew that the oceans were so adorable?
A video in which a Cutetropolis user gets out his/her pompoms.
Or did we all leave our pompoms at Cute Overload?
Perfect, Mike! The undersea world is so weirdly wonderful! (Or should that be wonderfully weird?)
Very cute!
She finally made the squad. A tiny squad, but she made it!
If I’m not mistaken that other, shyer one, had a baton!
I’m glad they’re on the Cutetropolis Team.
Go team! Razzle Dazzle them!
Or. Tiniest Pride Parade EVER. ?
Shake your pom pom.
Shake your pom pom.
Shake your pom pom.
Hahahahaha
Boom chika boom, boom chika boom, Boom chika rickachika, rickachika boom! That’s what we used to chant in grade school – I didn’t make the cheerleading squad, for which I remain eternally grateful. I would’ve had to go to games.
Yes, undersea life is so deeply cool (no pun intended?) and richly diverse. Some of us on land might learn a lesson from that, say wha’?
The things I learn, thanks to NTMTOM & Cutetropolis . . .
“The fighting behavior between the crabs is largely ritualised with much weapon-waving but little actual contact. The anemone is obviously of great importance to the crab, but the benefits to the anemone of the relationship are less apparent. Advantages to the anemone may include being brought into contact with more food and oxygen than it would encounter if it were stationary and the avoidance of the risk of being submerged in shifting sediment.”

Not sure if the anemone actually as a choice.
Fascinating.
Maybe the anemones wanted to play airplane.
I’m going to miss you guys – I’ll be taking a break from connectivity while I visit with my brother and his wife. I’m looking forward to a nice relaxing vacay. Have a great week and I’ll see you not at this week’s Open Thread, but the next.
Have a great trip!
Have a great time!??
Have a SAFE trip.
Have a fun vacation!
Have fun. I envy your ability to cut the cord. The best I can do is keep my news- checking down to every few hours.
Not only stellar pom-pom waving but it painted its whole body in team colors. Now that’s team spirit!
