    That’s my silly girl!

Two weeks left until surgery… the countdown has begun! I have SO much left to do around the house, and the smoke from BC is starting to bother me. Sigh.

    • Murray C August 5, 2017 / 10:46 am

I was wondering how long ’til your surgery. We’re with you all the way – not near enough to help, sadly!

Lily is so darned cute – I love her tortie patches, almost like someone started to color her in and never got around to finishing.

      • Jan August 5, 2017 / 12:27 pm

Maybe the painter had ADD… goodness knows Lily does!

    • fkaWaldenPond August 5, 2017 / 11:01 am

Lily really has gorgeous fur, you clearly take wonderful care of her. 🙂 Remind me– you live in Northern Coastal California? Also, sorry Jan, remind me of what your upcoming surgery entails.
I am off to visit my Dad and staying the night there down in Notl. Having dinner at my favourite restaurant Two Sisters; heck I know what I am ordering already. 😀
The storms yesterday afternoon blew away the humidity and it is a coolish 22 Celsius– I’m not complaining! Be well all, back tomorrow.

      • Jan August 5, 2017 / 12:25 pm

She is a pretty girl! Although it exasperates me when she takes that perfect white coat and rolls in the dirt and bark!

I live in Western Washington state, about two hours south of the Canadian border. And it’s knee replacement surgery.

  2. debg August 5, 2017 / 11:22 am

Jan, please tell me you get to rub that soft white tummy–it’s so inviting! Lily’s beauty has no parallel.

Keep us posted on surgery. As Murray C said, we’re with you all the way.

Work has still been crazy, but I’m finally starting to get a handle on the sheer volume. So another “recovery” weekend of quiet crafts, kitty cuddling, and general laziness.

    • Jan August 5, 2017 / 12:22 pm

The fluffy tummy is a trap about 90% of the time. Occasionally though she’ll allow it! 🙂

      • allein ? August 5, 2017 / 2:41 pm

A 10% chance is worth the risk.

  3. Duckie ? August 5, 2017 / 11:42 am

Lily is adorable, but Jan, are you sure you’re not an enabler?
The smoke in BC is awful. My grandfather is in the hospital with pneumonia because of it, and I have a dreadful cough that seems to attract the attention of crows. We’re supposed to get rain next weekend (oh, please God, yes), but that won’t be soon enough for me.
My feeling of life holding its breath fizzled away last Monday. Nothing good came of it, but nothing bad, either.
I did something for myself this week. I took all my best writing (poems, stories, essays, etc) and had them printed out and bound. Now I have a physical proof of something I am good at.
Next week, I am going to pull out ALL my fabric and see what I have. I will wait till hubby is at work, since my fabric hoarding baffles him. I also have a good half dozen sewing projects that I’ve been putting off, many of which are almost done. So I will plan to stay home next week and feel virtuously smug about it.
Have a great weekend, all. Be safe and be well.

    • Duckie ? August 5, 2017 / 12:05 pm

Update on Grampa: the family is being called. I don’t know what to think.

      • Jan August 5, 2017 / 12:19 pm

Sorry to hear about your grandfather; that’s tough. I still miss mine. Good thoughts winging your way!

        • Jan August 5, 2017 / 12:20 pm

Oh, and yes, I am a nip enabler!

          • 6rabbits August 6, 2017 / 9:37 am

Garden tip for mosquito-haters: Catnip is 10X as effective as DEET against mosquitos! Planting some in pots near the doors next year.

Lily is lovely as ever.? Fingers crossed for the knee replacements!

            • Jan August 6, 2017 / 10:00 am

Thanks! Obviously I need to plant more nip…

      • dubravkamcvmd August 5, 2017 / 1:37 pm

My fingers are crossed for your grandfather. Let us know what’s going on, if you’re up to it.

      • Murray C August 5, 2017 / 5:11 pm

Oh, Duckie, I’m so sorry. I hope you’ll be able to focus on some of the happier things you’re getting up to – so important, especially in times of stress. You keep safe and well, too.

      • Emsthemonster August 5, 2017 / 5:31 pm

I am so sorry to hear that, Duckie 🙁 May you find comfort in your creative projects!

      • Dulcie August 5, 2017 / 8:43 pm

Duckie – On my that’s too bad. Such anxiety that accompanies this. Before I read your comment this morning I heard in the news that officials in Vancouver were assuring people that there are no long term health concerns because of the smoke. I neatly spewed my swallow of coffee.
Hope things go well. Fingers crossed.

    • 6rabbits August 6, 2017 / 9:41 am

That is wonderful that you had all of your writing bound into a book! Yay for you!?
Sorry to hear about your grandpa. Sending calming thoughts and virtual hugs.?

  4. Not That Mike The Other Mike August 5, 2017 / 1:20 pm

Jan: Best of luck with surgery, and thanks for the video.

Duckie: Sorry to hear news of your grandfather, but congrats on the writing project.

I am starting a writing project as well: the 2018 Cutetropolis calendar. I’m looking to build upon last year’s work with something even better.

Also, the short-tailed cat, whom I’ve named Shorty, has an appointment to get neutered tomorrow. Tonight, I’ll give him dinner and put him in the cage that was provided by the clinic. The cage is actually a trap, but I’ve been conditioning Shorty by serving him food inside the cage so I don’t need to set the trap.

So wish us both luck, and I’ll probably be flipping out with anxiety like when Ani was spayed.

    • dubravkamcvmd August 5, 2017 / 1:39 pm

Calendar, yay! Good luck with Shorty! I hope he forgives you soon.

    • Emsthemonster August 5, 2017 / 5:29 pm

Good luck Mike and Shorty, we will keep our paws crossed!

    • Murray C August 5, 2017 / 5:34 pm

Great news about the calendar, Mike! Just an idea – if every “holiday” you put on the calendar that you could give it a shout-out on your post of the day?

Good luck with Shorty – he may be mad at you for a bit but I think he’ll get over it once he remembers that you’re the guy that feeds him.

      • Not That Mike The Other Mike August 5, 2017 / 6:15 pm

I will try to remember that. Also, I’m having more fun with the holidays for 2018.

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike August 5, 2017 / 7:40 pm

By the way, I took a picture of Shorty looking dangerous as he explores my house. He has a loving and crazy personality. One moment he’ll be rubbing against my leg, and then he decides to use it for a scratching post.

      • Jan August 5, 2017 / 7:45 pm

Aww, I’m a sucker for a tuxie! He can use me as a scratching post anytime! Lily already does anyway…

      • allein ? August 5, 2017 / 7:51 pm

Sounds like my friend’s cat that I was watching a few weeks ago. Rub rub rub…hey, why am I bleeding?!

      • dubravkamcvmd August 5, 2017 / 8:56 pm

Oh he’s a handsome devil! And he can be a tough guy I see.

      • Murray C August 5, 2017 / 10:20 pm

Aw, he’s a cutey – I see him in a t-shirt with the sleeve rolled up with a pack of cigs.

      • fkaWaldenPond August 5, 2017 / 10:47 pm

He’s claiming you re scratching! He is putting his scent on you. 😀 and he has a slinky badass look about him which, naturally, I love- he reminds me of the crows in my brother’s Newfoundland hood. He even has a ‘soul patch’ on his chin! and the way he is walking, I bet the back end is even a more ‘impressive’ view. (Oh well, better in the long run…;)
ps: sorry for wonky typos- on the ‘old mans’ computer and he has this awful ridiculous keyboard
        duckie your grandfather, sending calm

      • 6rabbits August 6, 2017 / 9:30 am

He has a very determined look about him!

  5. allein ? August 5, 2017 / 2:50 pm

So it’s Saturday and once again I slept super-late. I really need to stop doing that. But at least I don’t have a headache this time.

I got a 30% coupon from Kohls so I’m going to see if I can find anything to use it on. Also want to stop at the bookstore and order a book for my niece, and get her a birthday card to mail on Monday. Her birthday’s Wednesday (Aug. 9) but her party’s not until the 20th so I figured she’d love to get some mail. I can’t believe she’s turning 5.

  6. allein ? August 5, 2017 / 2:53 pm

Also, my dad came over yesterday and installed my new router and my internet hasn’t dropped once since. It’s so nice!

I don’t know if he was serious, but he said he hooked up the old one at home and it didn’t work very well and then he took a hammer to it. Which makes me sad because I wanted to take a hammer to it!!!

    • Duckie ? August 5, 2017 / 4:13 pm

      Percussive maintenance

      • dubravkamcvmd August 5, 2017 / 4:35 pm

I’ll have to remember that phrase! It’s the only kind of maintenance I can do.

      • allein ? August 5, 2017 / 4:36 pm

No maintenance; I just wanted to beat the stuffing out of it, it frustrated me so.

Also, I told my dad I thought it was the router three weeks ago, and he didn’t believe me.

        • allein ? August 5, 2017 / 10:26 pm

Had dinner at my parents’ house. My dad insisted I did not say I thought the problem was the router. He is wrong.

          • Smartypants August 6, 2017 / 5:04 pm

I think parents have selective memory. Of course, they insist it’s us! 😀

  7. Gigi the cat lady August 5, 2017 / 3:18 pm

Duckies I’m sending good thoughts for your grandfather.

I finally bought an external CD/DVD reader, since Apple in their wisdom as decided not to include one in the new iMac. So I’ll be spending part of the day transferring my music cd’s to iTune again.

    • dubravkamcvmd August 5, 2017 / 4:38 pm

What !!?!! Curses! My iMac is nine years old! I thought to finally get a new one but this is a low blow. Putting new music into my iTunes libraries is one of the main points of my computer. I’m waving a virtual cane. These kids today!!!

    • Murray C August 5, 2017 / 5:26 pm

I’m confused about that – I got one of those but whatever was on my old computer stayed on my new computer – no need to re-install all of my CD’s – OMG! I’d never find everything! I got it to install new things and so I could watch DVD’s from time to time.

      • Gigi the cat lady August 6, 2017 / 9:46 am

Yes I know it’s supposed to but for some reason the only music that stayed in my iTune library was the stuff I bought from iTune.

        • Murray C August 6, 2017 / 10:27 am

Something wrong there – I’d ask Apple – did you have someone do your transferring for you? We always do, for this very reason. The music may be there and you just can’t locate it.

  8. Melodie August 5, 2017 / 4:36 pm

In case anyone needs some cheering up today, I recently stumbled upon this cleverly disguised ad that perfectly explains what a doggo is:

Not to be outdone of course, by the explanation of a catto:

These might just be the best ads I’ve ever seen 😀

    • allein ? August 5, 2017 / 4:40 pm

      Too funny!

      King Catto – RUN.

    • Murray C August 5, 2017 / 5:30 pm

These are so hilarious – they’re so hilarious that I’m tempted to suggest that they’re HIGH-larious, as a friend of mine used to say.

  9. Emsthemonster August 5, 2017 / 6:13 pm

This has been a hectic week, lots of work, lots of drama, insane heat.

Yesterday it was 43C/109F. I was driving home when police stopped me. They checked my documents, asked if I feel good enough to be able to drive home. I guess I didn’t look my best 🙂 As it was red alert, they offered cold water to everyone they stopped, so I also got a flask. I drank it at one go and the two young policemen looked at me as if it had been vodka not water. They said it was like a Coca C ad and if they ever needed a girl for advertising mineral water, they would think of me 🙂

Again I had immense success among the toothless alcoholics of the neighbourhood. These people always interpret “no” as me playing hard to get, so I had to be rude to get the meaning through. I wish I looked a bit more aggressive than a newborn fawn, I could so skip these episodes.

    • 6rabbits August 6, 2017 / 9:47 am

      109?!? Nope, nope, nopety, nope.?

  10. Birdcage August 5, 2017 / 7:19 pm

Windy here in Southern Ontario and I love wind!!!! I must always have moving air around me. I’m sitting on my back patio and soooo enjoying this perfect temperature, perfect absense of humidity and lovely soft wind!!!!! I’m supposed to be working on the script for a workshop I have to give this week (“How to Give Feedback” to a group of youths) but it’s too lovely right now to be working.

    • Murray C August 5, 2017 / 10:24 pm

Amazingly, here in the Philly area it’s gorgeous! When I got home from CA it was thick with humidity, ending what was a horrendous dry week – poor hubby was watering like mad – and after the first few days of my returning it’s rained very regularly and the temps have moderated quite a bit.

Birdcage, I hope your workshop goes well and keep on enjoying the lovely summer breezes. Those of you suffering from the awful heat I hope the weather breaks soon!

  11. Not That Mike The Other Mike August 6, 2017 / 10:34 am

Update on Shorty at the spay/neuter clinic. Here he is in his cage, just before I dropped him off. It was a very busy session, and there were dozens of cat cages waiting their turn. The poor boy had a messy accident in his cage. I have no idea how long he had to stay with it 🙁 . I’ll be picking (most of) him up later today.

    • Smartypants August 6, 2017 / 10:54 am

Aww…wishing him a speedy recovery. And a less-stressful time for you than you went through with Ani!

      • Not That Mike The Other Mike August 6, 2017 / 10:57 am

90% of what I put myself through with Ani was due to me not knowing what to expect and panicking. This should be simpler.

    • dubravkamcvmd August 6, 2017 / 11:28 am

Poor boy! I hate when they’re scared. But it will give you the opportunity to comfort him. One of my cats had to be treated in the hospital for a few days. I went to visit her every day but the staff told me she was very distressed at night. The lucky thing was that instead of blaming me she believed that I rescued her when I brought her home. She ADORED me! (She got over it when I had to give her medication.) Here’s hoping Shorty looks to you for comfort.

      • Not That Mike The Other Mike August 6, 2017 / 5:19 pm

Update: Shorty and I are back home now. He’s groggy and will be staying in the cage per instructions. The procedure went well and he should be fine by morning. Thanks for all the good wishes.

        • fkaWaldenPond August 6, 2017 / 7:48 pm

          Keep us posted!

        • Smartypants August 6, 2017 / 9:06 pm

Glad to hear it – thank you for the update!

    • Murray C August 6, 2017 / 10:24 pm

Awwww, poor little guy – he must’ve hated that. But it will be over soon and he will forget. May take a while but he will.

  12. Dulcie August 6, 2017 / 11:43 am

Yes good luck Shorty. Don’t be too mad at Mike. Just know that we do these things because we love our animals. And believe us when we say this will make you a happy kit!

  13. Patty August 6, 2017 / 2:18 pm

Duckie, sorry to hear of your grandfather.

Mike, Shorty will be fine. My kittens also use my legs as a scratching post, and for climbing.

Trying to get downstairs in the morning is an obstacle course of cats, who need to touch each foot as it moves to the next step. They are all old enough for new homes, the shelter is full (kitten season), so there is no hurry to send them on to new homes.

My shoulder is still hurting. I have not gone to have it looked at, because of money, and the fact that they will tell me to not use it. I can’t not use it, between the disabled brother with the broken leg, and the car door that has to be lifted up by the window frame while opening it.

My daughter is on vacation this week, so her kitties need visiting and fed every day. They are always happy to see meemaw, because there are lots of treats involved. They are brother and sister, both black cats, and about 12 yrs old. My daughter was diagnosed as allergic to cats last year, and she asked her doctor why she doesn’t seem to react to her cats. He suggested she has built up a resistance to them. Visits to her siblings houses, with different cats, tend to cause a reaction.

Strange story about the brother cat, when they went to neuter him, they could not find his testicles, at first they thought he was hermaphrodite, since he had a deformed penis, and apparently very tiny testicles (the size of a pinky fingernail). Turns out he was just a bit deformed, and likely couldn’t have procreated anyway.

    • Murray C August 6, 2017 / 10:28 pm

Better to do the deed in case the hormones were enough to still allow behaviors that are best eliminated – e.g., spraying!

      • Patty August 7, 2017 / 12:05 pm

Murray, yes, and there was mention that non-functional testicles left behind could turn cancerous.

    • allein ? August 6, 2017 / 3:00 pm

Realized too late the link didn’t work right.
      Let’s try this…

      😛

      • Murray C August 6, 2017 / 10:26 pm

        Ho, ho!

  14. Murray C August 6, 2017 / 10:32 pm

Just finished doing the dishes and clean-up after having our next door neighbors over for dinner. We shared the prep duties so it wasn’t onerous for either, and the evening was deliciously cool. We hadn’t been on our patio all summer and it gave me a lovely perspective on our garden which is looking very lush. I worked in the garden for a good portion of the day pulling out some really tenacious weeds – I’m totally exhausted, but a good kind of exhaustion – I felt like I’m still strong despite advancing years – I did a LOT today, and it feels really good. G’night everyone, sweet dreams.

  15. Laura August 6, 2017 / 10:59 pm

Hi, all. Sorry I’ve been absent so much lately; I’ve been *inundated* with work during the week, and this weekend had an old college friend and her husband visiting from Miami. Her husband has got a really bad knee, but refuses to get it replaced even though he is nearly incapacitated at this point; we couldn’t do anything that involved him walking (willingly, anyway) more than 20 feet. My friend is getting incredibly frustrated, as you can imagine. So, having been through it, he and I had a good talk about how he really needs to face up to what he needs to do to be fair to *her*, not to mention himself! Here’s hoping it helped a bit, at least. Anyway, we had some good conversation, which was the most important thing. It’s always lovely to see her. We’ve been friends for (ulp!) 48 years now. It’s a long time! My daughter says we’re more like sisters than I am with my own sister, even, that’s how long we’ve been friends!

I don’t even know if anyone will read this, but if you do, I hope you have a great week and I’ll join you all again next Saturday!

    • allein ? August 6, 2017 / 11:02 pm

My best friend and I have been friends longer than either of her siblings has been alive (almost 40 years, now; we’ve known each other since pre-preschool!). 🙂

    • Murray C August 7, 2017 / 2:39 pm

Hi, Laura – I wish I could talk to your friend’s husband! I have so many people in my water class who have had either hips or knees replaces and out of all of them there’s only one who has had long term difficulty. As long as you’re compliant afterwards with PT, the satisfaction with recovery is very high. Most who waited wonder now why they did.

As far as being with old friends, it’s so wonderful – even if you haven’t seen each other for a long time once you’re back together it seems to start right where you left off. A wonderful gift, friendship.
