The Bun on the Train

He squirmed uncomfortably in his seat. Many times he had tried to divert his attention to the mundane pastures and wheat fields passing by his window, but each time his gaze returned to the unblinking eyes watching him from across the aisle, eyes that bored into him with the full force of all his secrets. She knew; he didn’t know how she knew, but she knew, and he knew she knew, and she knew he knew she knew, and he knew it.

What, you never saw anyone hop a train before? (Reddit)

Why do I never see cute critters when I take public transportation? It’s not fair!

I agree with Allein. There should always be cute critters on public transportation.

At least I have cute critters in my car. There’s a duck on my dashboard and sorta-Pablo-colored Chihuahua in one of my cup holders. I used to have more (mostly lost and found from the bookstore**), but my old car had some little cubbyholes in the dash for them to live in and my last three cars didn’t have them so now they’re in my living room. In my last car there was a little space on the side of the center part of the dashboard, next to my right leg, that the Chi sat in but this car doesn’t even have that. They don’t seem to want me to be able to store little things; each successive car seems to have fewer and fewer spots to hold stuff; this one doesn’t even have the pouch on the back of the passenger seat where my owner’s manual always lived. I’ve been looking for some kind of cute basket or something that can sit on the seat but be easily moved but I haven’t found one I like yet.

**the duck was lost and found, and sat on top of my register for a couple weeks in hopes that some child would come back for him, but no one did and now he’s on his fifth car with me. The Chihuahua is a little beanbag doll my mom found years ago on a trip (she got one for me, one for herself, and one for my (not-yet-at-the-time) ex; he’s on his fourth car.

        We like riding on dashboards.

That would be a nice ride for me, to see a cute bunneh face looking over at me. I’d be babbling back to it and would ask the owner if I could pet the precious bun.

So many questions! Why, how????? Would make commuting easier having this face looking back at me as long as there wasn’t too much disapproval leveled at me. When I went to the airport on Fri, my Uber driver had his little dog with him. Such a cutie – a laphso apso named Gizmo that just had to come into the back seat to check me out. Of course he got scritches and lots of babbling “who’s a good boy, such a sweetie pie” etc.

I’m amazed someone could even take a rabbit on a train and not worry about its suddenly reacting to something and making a dash for it! Pretty chill bun, I guess. Not mine. My little guy Fergus turns into a pin ball at the slightest noise or if I walk into his space carrying something bigger than a breadbox.

I didn’t see a bun, but I did see a lovely Golden Lab service dog yesterday on the subway. Since the dog was working I didn’t touch him. The owner was very friendly and chatted with me and others on the subway.

We got off at the same stop and took the elevator. The dog stood on the man’s right. I was on the left. Suddenly the man said “Release” and the dog made a beeline for me, wagging his tail. It seems that was the command that let the dog know he was “off-duty” and could socialize. When I hesitated, the man also told me it was okay to pet the dog at that point. He described it as a “reward” for the dog, or a special treat, to be able to interact with other people.

When we got off the elevator, the dog was all business again, standing beside his master.

What a lovely encounter! Thanks for sharing that story with us! So glad you got to interact with puppers and that he got a treat for his good behavior!

    And she disapproved. Strongly.

Thinking of this title to the tune of “Man on the Run”.
