Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to Caturday! Reader Claire S. shares a kitty with a subtle sense of style: “It’s my sister’s large orange floof, Brit. I like the way he lounges; it reminds me of those ‘most interesting man in the world’ commercials.”

Stay floofy, my friend.

“Brit’s best feature is that he has one adorable orange toe on each little white paw!”

It’s hard to get it to come out even.

The orange toe on each paw is maybe the cat equivalent of Savile Row tailoring.

    • Wuyizidi September 8, 2018 / 2:20 pm

Great analogy. You mean like this?

      • Dubravkamcvmd September 8, 2018 / 9:13 pm

        Lol, yes, just like that!

    Happy Caturday!

So I’m babysitting Stars. She didn’t sleep with me but this morning she yelled at me for food. That is not like her! My dad said she’s been more vocal since Stripes left us, but I’ve never heard her be that loud before! Now she’s bathing on the other side of the living room (she’s in the area that Stripes liked to hang out and I’m trying to remember if she used to spend as much time there or if she’s been doing it more since he’s been gone…makes me wonder if she misses him or if she’s just usurping his spots because she can).

My parents are in Virginia, heading for my uncle’s in North Carolina today, then to Georgia tomorrow, then to South Carolina on Thursday, then home next Tuesday or Wednesday. Watching the weather; I might need to move some stuff into the garage depending on what this storm does, and if that’s the case my brother will need to come down and help me. Gonna go home today and get a week’s worth of work outfits then to the store for food (that should be fun). They’re predicting lots of rain tomorrow and I don’t want to have to go out if it’s bad.

Gotta check the mail, too. My cousin sent me a message a few days ago with a picture of two pairs of earrings; she said they were ones her mother (my mom’s sister who passed away in March) loved and wore a lot and she wanted to know if I’d like to have one. Of course I said yes, so she sent it the next day and said it should be here today.

Also, there’s a spider hanging out right in the corner of my parents’ shower. Thankfully, I use the other bathroom when I’m here. I hope he stays there and leaves me alone.

Hello Cutetropolitans! This is the last weekend before school starts on Monday. I am treading the thin line between getting all my ducks in a row and being good to myself: for example, I watched my favorite PBS Mystery! (“Oliver’s Travels”) while sorting through last year’s papers. Anyone else excited for the launch of Ocean Cleanup System 001 later today? Definitely going to be a topic of conversation in my English lessons next week! Welp… back to the salt mines!

    • JenDeyan September 8, 2018 / 12:21 pm

Ocean Cleanup? Is that where they are going to try to tackle the giant island of plastic?

      • N. Fritz September 8, 2018 / 12:52 pm

Yes, Jendeyan! The then 17 year old inventor is now 24 and they’re launching from San Francisco today! You can livestream it on their website: https://www.theoceancleanup.com/system001/

I used to have a cat (about 25 years ago) who would lean on things exactly like Brit. Brings back memories.

  5. AJ September 8, 2018 / 9:25 am

Sounds like Allein and N Fritz are going to have busy weeks. I’m feeling a lot like the lounging kitty since there’s not too much going on here. And those toesies!! Super cute!!

I’m just hoping the student neighbors stay quiet this weekend after the craziness last weekend (cops called out multiple times to break up different parties). So far so good. It’s a strange morning here in SoCal, got a misty morning but later it’s supposed to hit the 90’s. I think this will be a weekend of errands and chores since there’s not too much going on. If I get myself organized, I may go down to farmer’s market today. Have a great weekend everyone!!

  6. debg September 8, 2018 / 10:14 am

Brit is a handsome fellow with impeccable taste. I personally find him very interesting.

Happy Caturday, everybody! I’m about to start my busy morning, but hopefully things will get calmer by afternoon. First, I’m helping a dear friend who’s just gotten home from hip replacement surgery. She’s got 3 cats and lives in a split level; I’ll watch her try to feed everybody this morning for safety’s sake. Then I head to the bank to close on my HELOC, then I meet my lawn guy for some bulky shopping (he’s got a trailer). My gardens in boxes arrive at the end of this month, so we’ve got to get that front yard ready.

That’s just the morning. I’ve still got pictures to hang, etc., in the newly painted bedroom, plus all my usual weekend errands. Hopefully there will be some time to relax this weekend! (I’m sure there will be.)

    Hugs to you all.

Quite an interesting week for me. On Thursday I went to see Alan Bennett’s “The Habit of Art” at my local theatre – highly entertaining though not one of Bennett’s best, I thought. Last night I had a bizarre dream involving me, Stephen Fry and a stolen painting, but tragically I can’t remember the details. And today I did a lot of work on my new website exposing fraudulent Chinese wig retailers pretending to be UK-based companies (you may remember that I was scammed by one but got my money back).

    http://www.chinesewigscam.co.uk

It may not have been picked up by the search engines yet, by the way. And perhaps I should have put a bit more thought into the name, which on reflection suggests a camera trained on a bunch of Chinese wigs…

    • dubravkamcvmd September 8, 2018 / 11:32 am

I looked at your web site and am astonished by your dedication and thoroughness. If you lived in the United States you would be a great litigator. I am also somewhat surprised by the Chinese crooks lengthy correspondence with you. Paypal must have a policy of sanctioning crooks in some way since the crooks seemed very anxious to placate you.

      • Alice Shortcake September 8, 2018 / 12:17 pm

Thanks! Apparently these absurd conversations can go on for ages unless you put your foot down. The thing that infuriates me is that Paypal must have received HUNDREDS of complaints about these criminals yet they still allow them to use their services.

  8. Nancy September 8, 2018 / 10:51 am

It’s ok, little floofy. I have trouble getting it even when I put color on my toes too.

  9. Duckie ? September 8, 2018 / 11:21 am

    Happy Caturday, everyone.
Bad week, but it’s over. Internet back online. Being sent for LOTS of tests next week, but specialist does not seem concerned. More prescriptions and supplements.
A lovely week of rain coming up, and I have most of my crafting supplies stocked up. I’m going to spend this fall and winter playing with felt.
Starting my fall sewing next week. Fleece and flannel.
Big Floofy Cat, you are gorgeous!
Loving all the subtle duck references in people’s comments.
    Have a great weekend, everyone.

    • dubravkamcvmd September 8, 2018 / 12:47 pm

That’s almost painfully adorable. I’ve seen otters use their hands to manipulate clams or oysters that they were opening and eating. Does this mean that they prefer to use their hands to eat – no snout in dish?

      • allein ? September 8, 2018 / 1:58 pm

I just love the way he throws his head back and tosses the pieces in his mouth.

        • Alice Shortcake September 8, 2018 / 2:53 pm

I just hope he licks his paws clean before walking on the wooden floor.

    • debg September 8, 2018 / 2:51 pm

      I loff the little handses.

    • Faye September 8, 2018 / 6:04 pm

      Lip smacking good!

  12. Amyliz September 8, 2018 / 12:29 pm

Brit is so handsome. He looks large and in charge!

Feels like fall here today, which is welcome after hot, sticky summer. Just got back from the farmer’s market and now intend to stay home in order to avoid all the football revelry going on here. I live in a university town and today is a big intrastate rivalry game and things get a little nuts. I am the opposite of a football fan!

Am just about to splurge and order tickets online to attend a live presentation of Snap Judgement; if you don’t know about it, I recommend checking out the podcast on NPR…great storytelling!

    Happy weekend to you all!

    • N. Fritz September 9, 2018 / 2:14 am

AmyLiz: At least the right team won! And thanks for the Snap Judgment tip… I am increasingly convinced that NPR is my one-stop shop for news and entertainment (who needs Facebook and Twitter when you have NPR and Cutetropolis?!) and I will now listen to Snap Judgment podcasts on my commute!

  14. Carlotta September 8, 2018 / 2:33 pm

I’m starting my second week at home with a broken shoulder. The cats usually stay out of the bedroom, but one has been there every time I need a lie-down, and he sleeps among my feet.
Fortunately I have heaps of sick-time! And it’s not as bad as last time (yes, I broke the other shoulder three years ago– the right one, I’m right handed and it was a worse break). I’m doing my best to keep busy with chores I can do one-handed and with no jerky movements, and to stay out from under my husband’s feet. He works at home, so he’s here when I need him. I just try not need him all the time!!
And I won’t be ordering any Chinese wigs!!!

    • debg September 8, 2018 / 2:53 pm

Carlotta, that sounds dreadful on so many levels. Thank goodness your husband and cats are around to help you through things.

Watching my friend deal with her hip replacement has made me wonder if living alone was such a smart choice for myself!

      • Carlotta September 8, 2018 / 6:13 pm

Thanks, DebG! It sounds like you are terribly capable around the house, but on the other hand, companionship is nice, too!

    • Smartypants September 9, 2018 / 7:37 am

Yikes, just the phrase ‘broken shoulder’ makes me cringe. Glad you have DH to take care of you. Hope you feel better soon!

  15. Faye September 8, 2018 / 6:18 pm

Hi All. I bought a professional drafting table that converts into a standing desk. I love to assemble furniture so took my time over two days following excellent directions.

The desk works perfectly and fits right where I want it. I am looking out the window at my neighbors trumpet vines. Tons of birds, squirrels, bumble bees to see. Very happy.

Now I have to move my electric pencil sharpener and clamp lamp over.

    • Dubravkamcvmd September 8, 2018 / 9:52 pm

It sounds great! You’ll be doing your art with a view!

    • N. Fritz September 9, 2018 / 2:17 am

Oooh, Faye! A professional drafting table is on my wish-list! Enjoy!!

      • Faye September 9, 2018 / 2:38 pm

        N. Fritz go on
Amazon or google Triflex Drafting Table. Go height adjustable so you can work standing if you need to.

    • Smartypants September 9, 2018 / 7:39 am

Faye, that sounds delightful! Enjoy. I was just asking someone yesterday “Am I the only person who likes assembling furniture?”

I also love hardware stores – do you? Our local one, Carr Hardware, just got a national award.

      • allein ? September 9, 2018 / 10:27 am

I was watching Match Game last week and one of the contestants had a side gig assembling people’s furniture.

      • Faye September 9, 2018 / 1:01 pm

I used to love hardware stores too!

My fave now is art supplies. But so far I can get most of what I need on line.

    • Faye September 9, 2018 / 12:53 pm

Thank you all. I’m kind of stunned. I was working on a small table sitting on the edge of my bed. Now I have a 30”x40” glass surface! A height adjustable drafting stool my professional lamp and an electric pencil sharpener. I’m thrilled.

I’ll email Mike a pic of the large portrait I did of my Doctor. I had to do it in three parts due to desk size limitations. I was so frustrated that a furniture tsunami was set off in my bedroom.

I just ordered a 3 draw rolling file cabinet that I can also use as a printer stand. At the moment my printer is frustratingly inaccessible.

My room is small. I have a chest freezer and a small fridge in here. I could easily live in a cabin on a medium sized ship.

        • debg September 9, 2018 / 2:31 pm

          Wow indeed!

        • Faye September 9, 2018 / 2:32 pm

          Thank you Mr. Mike.

I can share this. Not gruesome! My hero, Dr. Stein.

          • dubravkamcvmd September 9, 2018 / 5:05 pm

Spectacular portrait! You portray him as very cool.

            • Faye September 9, 2018 / 5:39 pm

              Thank you! He is cool.

He is a compassionate Doctor. A musician. A scientist. Artistic. And a father of three children adopted from South Korea twenty+ years ago.

            • Smartypants September 9, 2018 / 10:25 pm

              That’s really beautiful. Congratulations!

        • fkaWaldenPond September 9, 2018 / 9:47 pm

It is a striking triptych– and I think the brown grain wood really grounds it- if you do ever get to custom frame it, go with a similar brown grain. 🙂

          • Faye September 10, 2018 / 12:16 pm

            Exactly.

        • Haha September 10, 2018 / 11:22 am

Oh Faye, that is gorgeous! Beautiful and I can feel the emotion coming from it. Thank you for sharing such a special work of art!

          • Faye September 10, 2018 / 12:17 pm

Thank you. It is based on ten+ years of looking at him.

Good morning team! Very cool and cloudy weather here for a few days – then back to summer-like wx on Tuesday.

I’m in a lot of pain (chronic back/hip stuff) but my apartment move is coming along – last week I hired the mover, reserved a 14′ box truck and got on the list for a larger storage unit.

This week, neurologist, physical therapy, and get with the maintenance man about choosing a mini freezer for the Fisher-Price kitchen. Also while the weather’s still nice I hope to get some pix of an abandoned fairgrounds near here (not art pix, more like just reference photos for future drawing/painting).

    • N. Fritz September 9, 2018 / 8:05 am

We were cut from the same cloth, Smartypants! I love hardware stores (we have a comprehensive independently owned hardware and gift center the next town over – what they don’t have they can order. Case in point, I can pick up an airpop popcorn popper next Saturday!). And most of the photos I take these days are with the intent to paint/draw – usually 4 identical pix “just in case” – lol! An abandoned fairground sounds really intriguing with lots of possibilities!

      • Smartypants September 9, 2018 / 11:38 am

Oh, I take duplicate pix too! I’m trying to rein it in a little – say, just one extra in case my thumb was over the lens the first time.

    • Alice Shortcake September 9, 2018 / 8:44 am

I read that as “the Fisher-Price kitten” and was utterly baffled.

      • Smartypants September 9, 2018 / 11:35 am

        LOL – new mascot?

Thanks for sharing and enjoying Brit! My sister was delighted when I showed her this page with all your nice responses to Brit’s floof and cute toes =)

Night three and Stars has finally joined me on the bed….I wonder how long she’ll stay…

    • fkaWaldenPond September 10, 2018 / 7:46 am

      Did she stay the night?

      • allein ? September 10, 2018 / 8:13 am

She wasn’t there when I woke up but I don’t know how long she stayed. I didn’t feel her get down before I fell asleep.
