Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to the weekend! We have a return Caturday visit from Teller, whose human Muppet2171 sent not one but three pictures to give us a closer look at her gorgeous cat…

I’m ready for my closeup.

Giving us a little sneer now, a look that says “Yeah, I’m approachable but I might be a little dangerous too, you just don’t know.”

Oh, who am I kidding? I’m a pussycat!

Oooooooh-kay, that’s too close.

Get… that… THING… outta my face.

Such a beauty!! The cats I’m fostering have settled in and the kittens are well, kittens. Feisty, sweet, and oh so adorable. Wrestlemania is a usually occurrence as is trying to grab mom’s tail. Mom likes to talk, especially when she wants food but is very sweet and just loves pets and attention. They came in as strays but the way mom acts, I think she was in a house previously.

Other than being a willing slave, heading up to our friend’s house to see how’s he doing (he started chemo this week ☹️) plus make up his meals for the next two weeks. then just the usual errands. Next weekend will be the big weekend – two days of concerts! First Eagles and Zac Brown Band then Journey and Def Leopard. Gonna be crazy. Everyone enjoy your Sat!

Ooh, AJ! Enjoy your concerts! I have tickets for ELO on Sept. 23 in Vienna. We must compare notes!!!

      • AJ September 15, 2018 / 10:52 am

ELO!?? Wow that’s gonna be another awesome concert. To be honest I didn’t realize they were still playing but have a great time.

Happy caturday! I’m snuggling with Stars. My parents should be getting home sometime this afternoon or evening. Florence made them cut their trip short. They were supposed to go to Hilton Head on Thursday but instead headed for the Charlotte area. They got to visit my cousin yesterday, at least, then headed for Virginia and then home today. So I need to pack up my stuff, but Stars came in to snuggle so that’ll have to wait.

So, school started this week with the usual nonsense. Two days I didn’t get home til 8-8:30 pm. Students are already pushing their limits. I find myself having to do much more orchestrating to get the results I want. My neighbor’s wifi is being squirrelly. Plus, my car is acting up. “It’s always something…” as Roseanne Roseannadanna would say

    • dubravkamcvmd September 15, 2018 / 11:04 am

“It’s always something” is a profound observation and illuminates much of life.

      • debg September 15, 2018 / 11:53 am

That was Roseanne Rosannadanna for you. Wow, I still miss that character.

        • N. Fritz September 15, 2018 / 2:05 pm

I miss Gilda Radner… think of what she could have accomplished if she hadn’t died at 43.

    • Maia September 15, 2018 / 1:12 pm

Hang in there, N. Fritz! That first couple of weeks is always hectic!

      • N. Fritz September 15, 2018 / 2:10 pm

Thanks, Maia! Don’t I know it! Three teachers are out next week and the rest of us have to cover their classes!

My big event of the week was getting back to the Art Studio. I worked on my schedule so I can go for 9 two hour sessions per month! Thrilled.

There is another woman named Fay. I always sit near her! Fay and Faye! I have tiny touches to do on my first painting. I emailed a not quite version to Mike. Already planning the next one.

Happiest I’ve been in my whole life! Thank you all for your cute support.

    • debg September 15, 2018 / 11:54 am

Faye, it makes us happy to know that you’re so happy. Happy dances all around!

      • Maia September 15, 2018 / 1:10 pm

        Ditto!

        • Faye September 15, 2018 / 4:35 pm

          That makes me happy.

      • Faye September 15, 2018 / 4:34 pm

        That makes me happy.

    • MurrayC September 15, 2018 / 1:15 pm

Faye, that is so terrific! Glad you’re persisting with going to the Art Studio and that you’re so happy.

      • Faye September 15, 2018 / 4:35 pm

        Thank you Murray.

      • dubravkamcvmd September 15, 2018 / 2:17 pm

Wow! That is so different from the somewhat, well, fraught things of yours I’ve seen. In the photograph I can’t see what the texture of the surface is. The bottom looks like it is not smooth. Would that be impasto? I think it’s beautiful.

        • Faye September 15, 2018 / 4:41 pm

Dub the very artistic bottom edge is the lip of the easel crusted with layers of paint. You are the second person to ask what technique that is. I would call it impacted!

Way less fraught. These will all be small, all oil, all not anything to do with my fraughtness and no sketching first. The medium is oil. Slight texture in clouds and yellow grass.

          • dubravkamcvmd September 15, 2018 / 6:43 pm

Aha! Yellow grass! That’s what it is! I love it!

            • Faye September 15, 2018 / 8:42 pm

              Yay!

      • AJ September 15, 2018 / 8:45 pm

Magnificent! You’re very talented Faye. Somehow I was hiding behind the door when the creative gene was handed out so my efforts look like a 3 year olds. Hmmm, maybe I can sell them as abstract modern art? Can’t wait to see your the finished piece.

        • allein ? September 15, 2018 / 9:26 pm

Ha! I always say my brother hogged all the art genes.

          • AJ September 15, 2018 / 10:29 pm

What’s worse is my hubby is more crafty than I am and sometimes he even has more fashion sense too. If I have any doubt about an outfit I’ll ask him “Does this go together?” LOL

            • allein ? September 15, 2018 / 10:50 pm

My brother was a graphic art major in college (though he programs apps for a well-known financial services company now, which I’m sure pays much better 😉 ). He must have gotten it from my grandmother. She did all kinds of beautiful needlework (which is all over my parents’ house) and when she was in the nursing home she did a bunch of ceramics and painted a bit, too (we have a watercolor she did shortly before she died; my aunt took the original and had copies made and framed for my dad and my uncle for Christmas that year). I don’t know if he does much drawing these days, though.

      • N. Fritz September 15, 2018 / 11:45 pm

        Stunning palette!

        • Faye September 16, 2018 / 7:13 am

          Yay!

      • MurrayC September 16, 2018 / 3:43 pm

        Lovely, Faye – good going!

    • AJ September 15, 2018 / 8:50 pm

How wonderful Faye that you’re going back to art class and it’s making you happy. That’s the best way to go through life, especially after all your hardships. Congrats!

      • Faye September 16, 2018 / 7:13 am

        Thank you!

  5. Duckie ? September 15, 2018 / 11:31 am

    Hooray! It’s Saturday!
Crazy busy week, but got lots done. I have all my art supplies laid in for the winter, and am gloating over the colours of fabric and thread. And the prices!
We are starting to prep our place for the winter. Almost time to seal windows and doors. The bed has flannel sheets on, and I’m bringing winter quilts down and putting summer bedding at the top of the closets. I have harvested my “deck garden” and gotten two tomatoes and a cucumber. Four more cucumbers are trying to grow, so I’ll give them another week to see if their attempts are worth waiting for.
I had the unexpected joy of seeing a mint coloured budgie this week. He was just a baby, and was riding on the shoulder of the woman raising him. He was very tame and affectionate, and it was all I could do to not grab him and limp slowly away.
Stupid health isn’t so good, but it’s not worse. I see all three of my docs this week, which should be interesting. I’m coping poorly with the side effects of the new prescriptions, and am feeling a good deal of sympathy for those on anti-cancer regimes. I am quite down, and cannot imagine what things are like for those on stronger or larger doses. Puts my problems into perspective. I am going to request that surgery be done on the eye to remove the last of the lump, rather than continue on the prescriptions.
I brought out my stash of beeswax candles this morning and the whole place smells heavenly. Fall has always been my favourite time of year, and I love all the associated fragrances.
Next week, I begin to stock the freezer with pre-cooked and baked foods. Hubby loves coming home from work and getting a plate of samples with his coffee.
I have a favour to ask everyone. I am trying to find a book from before my past, called “Mr. Apple’s Family”, by Jean McDevitt. If anyone has a copy that I might borrow, just to read again, I’d be willing to pay for round shipping. Amazon’s price left me clutching my pearls.
Teller is gorgeous (I think that’s default mode for Siamese).
Faye, glad to hear things are going much better.
    Have a fantastic week, everyone.

    • Amyliz September 15, 2018 / 1:16 pm

      Faye, hurray, that’s great news!
Duckie, you sound like a little squirrel, storing nuts away for the winter! 🙂 I hope your health issues start to improve soon.
After some heavenly cool and refreshing days here, it’s back to being hot and sticky. Yuck! The good news is my little class of 2 and 3 year olds is off to a good start, much more “chill” than last year’s group. Every year is different.
No big plans for the weekend, which is fine with me!
BTW, Teller, that’s my reaction to having my picture taken, too, but I am not nearly as photogenic as you!

      • allein ? September 15, 2018 / 2:02 pm

It’s in the mid-70s here and I can see blue sky for the first time all week!

      • Faye September 15, 2018 / 4:45 pm

        Thank you Amyliz!

    • Maia September 15, 2018 / 1:21 pm

I love reading about all of your autumn preparations, Duckie! I can almost smell the fragrances of the candles and the baking through my computer.

If you can’t find the book you are looking for, some library systems in larger areas will do a book search/borrow with neighboring library systems. My Seattle-area library found a book in a Portland, Oregon library that they were able to arrange for me check out.

    • AJ September 15, 2018 / 8:57 pm

I am so ready for some cooler weather so please send some my way Duckie. You do sound like the busy ant getting ready for winter – candles and cooking and switching out both blankets and windows. And good luck with any surgery, hopefully that will finishing fixing things.

  6. MurrayC September 15, 2018 / 1:23 pm

Hi, Everyone, glad you’re all doing interesting and wonderful things. Duckie, I hope you can resolve your eye situation – got to be difficult. Those going to concerts? I’ve never even heard of those people. Just to give you an idea of how out of the cultural loop I am.?
Hubby and I just returned from a road trip to Maine to see a couple of relations, some friends, to New Hampshire to the McDowall Colony where Hubby’s grandfather painted pictures of his (hubby’s) mother and to Vermont to meet a cousin. Lovely trip, VERY relaxing, lots of laughter. Had to board one bun for the duration – Clementine wasn’t eating very much. Hated to separate the pair but had to – Fergus went to friend’s house. Now he’s chasing her around trying to hump her and she ain’t havin’ it.
I’m trying to buckle down to get some work done for a craft show I’m in, end of November, have to clean to ready the place for a visit from my CA Bro and SIL, garden clean-up. I’d better not think about it or I’ll just get overwhelmed – one foot in front of the other.

    Hello everyone!
    Teller is gorgeous, as always!

I am busy with work- the colleges start later than the younger grades, so we are still ramping up.
My father is still at the rehab center, but is getting stronger every day, and I am blessed to have siblings who have pitched in to help this past couple of weeks.

My main focus has been helping my son get ready for University- he is equal parts nervous and excited, and there are so many little things to do for a first year: bedding, toiletries, setting up college accounts, finding luggage for moving his things up to the dorm.

Launch is next Sunday. I’m equal parts nervous and excited, too.

I hope the upcoming week treats everyone well, and if you are in the Carolinas area, that you and your family are safe. Stay strong!

Happy Caturday! Teller is looking as lovely (and dangerous) as ever.

I had so much fun on my birthday. The Wild Animal Sanctuary was heavenly, even at 92 degrees. It’s not a great place for photos without a telephoto lens; in fact, I had to rent binoculars to see even the big guys. So I’ve got nothing to share except stories.

    https://www.wildanimalsanctuary.org

I teared up when I saw the first tiger. They’re my favorite big cats.

Watched a bear scratch his butt against a wooden post for a good 5 minutes. Then he headed into his big pond for a soak. Smart bear! I wanted to join him, I was so sweaty and sticky.

Saw several wolves and wolf hybrids, several servals (that’s a hard combo to type), lots of bears, tons of lions (including a female with a mane–they call her the Bearded Lady–and a pair of lionesses who had just moved to the Sanctuary), a black leopard, a bobcat, and lots of tigers, including their white tiger. It was a glorious experience, since all these critters had been rescued from illegal or abusive situations.

Also spent time cuddling my own little carnivores, eating great food, and (re)watching part of a beloved TV series while knitting and spinning. It was pretty much a perfect birthday, with messages from all the people I care about most–that includes all of you! Thanks for the good wishes yesterday.

    Hi All!
I had a transforming experience this morning– I went for a bra fitting! Hear me out. 🙂

This whole process started a couple of weeks ago when I realized I couldn’t put off brassiere shopping any longer but I dread, just dread it. I usually go to our local department store, The Bay up here in Canada but the lighting is awful, I get sweaty, and struggle with all the sizes, shapes and usually walk out empty handed, chafed and feeling fat.
So… I looked online for reviews of best shops here in the Toronto area and decided on Melmira on Yonge in North Toronto.
The experience was beyond wonderful– Colleen who took care of me was exemplary. No measuring tapes, she looked at my back and came in with one bra to start and basically had it first try size wise. Every bra tried on she stands behind you and does it up corset style so I didn’t have to struggle or attempt to twist it around. No weirdness, just fantastic service. And the colours!
It is pricey, but completely worth the cost and trip. If you have something similar in your area of the world– do it. Set money aside, save for it, worth it even if you get one bra.

And.. besides that, Teller always makes me smile and I envy the concerts people are seeing!
Glad to read and see your art Faye and reading about fall preparations for others. 🙂
    Have a wonderful Sunday!

Can I just say that i’m always a sucker for a seal point?

Still miss Sabrina, the seal point that we had growing up. Just adored her. smartest cat i’ve ever met too.

  11. Amyliz September 15, 2018 / 6:47 pm

I’ve asked this before…anyone heard anything from Gigi the Catlady? It’s been a along time.

    • fkaWaldenPond September 15, 2018 / 7:05 pm

There were a couple submissions but I don’t know if they were recent or not; but no comments that I have seen. I hope she is lurking!

      • Amyliz September 15, 2018 / 7:29 pm

        Me, too!

    • MurrayC September 16, 2018 / 3:31 pm

And Patty, too – I don’t remember seeing anything from her for quite a while, tho’ I may have missed some things. I’m in the midst of an email purge having got 4,000+ emails while I was away. sigh. I have to speed through many things. OH! And Phred’s Mom!

    Have some cake.
