Watch this chinchilla roll around in the dust!
You might think that rolling around in the dirt would be a strange way to get clean, but for a chinchilla, it’s dust perfect. According to The Spruce Pets website, the fine dust penetrates down to the skin, absorbing oils and dirt to leave the chinchilla’s skin silky and luxurious. And as you can see from the video, it’s a lot of fun, too.

I need some chinchillas to just roll around my house.
According to their web site you BUY chinchilla dust especially for this purpose. Drat! I was going to have them come to my house next. But why don’t they explode in a fit of coughing?
I was just going to say, you’d think they’d have respiratory issues from inhaling all that dust. Maybe there’s some kind of evolutionary protection in their anatomy.
Birds love dust baths too. There are a couple of garden beds I walk by where during the hot summer months, you can see the birds flapping, shimmying, in the sand and they leave these sweet little impressions, indentations in the dry soil. 🙂
I guess the next step is an egg bath and then Panko????? (Oooo, I’m in trouble now!)

Murray and ^00^, you crack me up!
Hahahahaha. Creepy but funny.
Almost nothing as adorbs as a chinny in a dust bath.
Teenage chinchin: “Okay mom, I can either keep myself clean, or my room clean. Your choice.”
It’s pumice dust, it’s really finely ground and feels silky between your fingers. I think they stop breathing during the roll, but it does sometimes cause a sneeze or two (so cute) and then the adorable nose swipes. They can get eye irritations from the dust too, so they shouldn’t have access to the bath 24/7.
When I bring out the dust bath they get SO excited.
