Single Water Frog Seeks Same

Romeo, world’s loneliest frog, to meet his match

He was thought to be the last of his kind, but now the loneliest frog in the world is about to end a decade-long dating drought. Romeo, a Sehuencas water frog captured in Bolivia, has lived in isolation for ten years while conservationists searched for a female mate.

I can has girlfriend?

The search took a dedicated team from Global Wildlife Conservation deep into the cloud forests of Bolivia, scouring streams until one day…

And here’s Juliet now!

I just love a happy ending, Andrew Y.

Not sure this is what Shakespeare had in mind…

How old is 10 in frog years? Because we might be banking on great granddaddy here to save the froggie race. I hope he doesn’t have a heart attack…

I know nothing about frogs’ average lifespans… Maybe amphibians can live as long as reptiles? Hope so… Any frogologists out here in Cutetropolis?

The toad in the nature center I volunteer at has been living there for something like 15 years. Living in a controlled environment is very helpful to longevity of course.

    It isn’t easy, being green…

Oh I hope many little water frogs ensue! Of course that would mean siblings mating so…I’m overthinking this.

I read that they found several of the frogs, including Juliet, so maybe some of the others can get in on the mating fun for greater genetic diversity.

This made me tear up a bit.

It really is very touching, I guess particularly since Romeo has such a sweet face/expression. There is a story in the NYT today about a gay penguin couple in Australia. Talk about touching! Apparently penguins begin courting by bowing to one another and then they get down to business by bringing each other carefully selected pebbles for the prospective nest. If penguin is not interested s/he rejects the pebble. Here the proffered pebbles were oohed and aahed over. More touching details of courtship and relationship and now the happy couple have a baby penguin that they are taking really good care of.

Romeo does have a sweet face with such a hopeful expression. I’m also very happy for the gay penguins and their baby.

Here’s to all the tadpoles getting their legs in 2019. No one deserves to use the mantra “New year, new me” more than them!
