When I first saw this photo of the trapped rat, I felt such
sorrow. It was begging for help. It was so poignant, so
painful. I had to read the story to find that it was saved.

The rat was on the news last night.

Note to self: do not get a Newfie.

Such artistry in that last video.

The Sewer Rat Rescue was so respectful and kind. I’m totally impressed.

I felt the same way – I hate to see an animal suffer. It did remind me of Pooh – “A Bear in Great Tightness” because he’d eaten too much Hunny. Don’t think that’s what made this rat so corpulent.

And the Newfies! Oh, my heavens how do you not go broke feeding an animal that huge??!!!

And, Faye, didn’t you love that realistic doggie? Wouldn’t it be amazing if you painted something and it became real? (depending, of course, on what it was)

The rat link is profound in every way. Plus, the tools the German firefighters had ready for this were amazing. I am not sure who is trying to fool who here but these “tree kangaroos” are clearly stuffies – look at that “fur” – I ask you! Very very well done of course. I’ll take two.

    1. I’m surprised that so much effort was spent on freeing that rat… but I am absolutely delighted!
    2. I want a newfie and I want it now!!!
    3. Who knew Swiss cat ladders was an actual thing?!
    4. When was it determined that Australia should have a monopoly on so many insanely adorable critters?? Tree kangaroos!!

Re: 4. It’s to make up for all the other critters that want to kill you.

I agree with all these sentiments. Tree kangas remind me of quokkas with their sweet smiling faces.

Those newfies about killed me. It’s a bear! Stephen Colbert would be terrified!

I am blown away by the Swiss cat ladders. And I didn’t even know you could get pet doors put in WINDOWS! I may have to check that out . . . .

A long time ago I was acquainted with a yuge Newfie who lived in a New York City
apartment, would you believe it! He was a sweetie, but, oh, his smell! His owner
told us this was because of the natural oils in their their coats to enable them to swim
in the cold waters of Newfoundland. Is this true? He was a real stinker, but lovable.

I haven’t found anything that says Newfies are any smellier than other dogs. Any dog will smell if its fur is not brushed and cleaned properly and Newfies have a LOT of fur!!

These links today are just great! Yeah for the people who helped out the poor rattie, the story was on my Google news feed and even the Washington Post did a story on him. And why is it that 99.99% of all totally adorably cute animals seem to come from Japan? Is it something in the water? Oh, and word of warning, don’t click on the dog’s instagram account. You will be ded from all the qte posted there.

Newfies!!! Yes for Newfies!!! I am so lucky to have 2 of them in my neighborhood and see them all the time while they’re taking walkies. One is black and white with spots on his legs, looks like a mini cow, named Gus. And Beau (or Mr. Beauregard as I call him) is a beautiful brownish red. I always love to give them pets, they’re so soft and snuggable. Remind me of walking carpets. Hmmm, maybe Newfies were the inspiration for Wookies in Star Wars??

My neighbor put a high fence with a flat top up that has become a squirrel skyway between the telephone pole and wire/dumpster network in the alley and the street tree network. They can travel straight from one to the other without touching the ground and it does get heavily used.In winter they stop by where it passes right next to my windows to warm themselves, and complain about the lack of treats.
A long board I put up gives them an incline they can scramble up and down like the cat ladders that predators cant manage. What the man point is though,is that little pieces of bread I leave them lure them to the water bowl on a bench right under the ramp,so they know it is there.
Summer is brutal on birds and critters because of the absence of drinking water sources in urban/suburban environments, and it really shows with the constant visitors to the fresh water pan.

Good for you, Murkle46 – we have a heated birdbath in winter and about 4 or 5 of them in the summer. They’re at ground level so that all critters have access – I just use great big plant saucers. I get such pleasure watching them all line up with their little towels and toothbrushes chatting gaily amongst themselves………ooo, wait, perhaps i’ve said too much.

Like a drunk lady driving a wheelchair cart in a Walmart lot while drinking wine out of Pringles can,

we all seem to identify with this rat. I have a new animal spirit. And a very appropriate entry for Wednesday
