Weekend Open Thread

Yay! It’s Caturday! And today we have a return visit from Fred and George Weasleycat, who we haven’t seen in a while. Here’s DebG to bring us up to date:

They’re still up to no good, but that’s how I like it. Since Fred almost died in June from that mysterious illness/condition, he’s been getting spoiled rotten. He and George love their new cat tree. Fred is on the lower level and George has taken the high ground. I think. I have to see them from the side to tell them apart! Their butts give them away here: George has classic tabby markings and Fred is a mackerel tabby.

    Such handsome boys!

Knee news: peeps, I’m back to walking like a normal person! Almost no limp at all, and at PT I can get pretty much maximum range of motion. Still have a ways to go but the end is in sight!! 🤗😊

My head cheerleader approves! Mostly because I can get up and down and up and down to play fetch with her favorite jingle mousie toy… 😻

I don’t know if video works, but here she is bringing said jingle mousie to me:

It works! What a good hunter!

        Awww. What a sweet girl.

Such good news, Jan B.! That’s got to feel so good – great job. And now Lily can run you ragged!

Happy Birthday, DEBG – your kitties are so handsome!

Great news on the knee news, Jan! And of course your furry boss is pleased with the human servant. A proper ability to move is important in a human servant, after all!

We’ve had some not quite as bad news, too — Melody saw the oncologist Tuesday and although there’s no way to cure her, we can keep her much more comfortable than she was last weekend. That same afternoon she got an infusion of, of all things, an osteoporosis drug which the oncologist said should start showing results in 2-3 days, and she was right. Melody is clearly feeling much better, and while she still limps, she’s able to move around more easily and isn’t in obvious pain all the time. We’re not hoping for years; we should get somewhere between six weeks and three months with her. But considering that we both expected she’d only last a few more days, that’s a lot more time. So that’s great news!

Of course, the very next day Sebastian did something to his neck, so back to the vet we went. She thinks it’s either a slipped disk or a pinched nerve; if he moves his head wrong, it hurts him enough that he squeals in fright as much as pain. He’s been *very* clingy ever since then. But he’s gradually improving, and we’re going to find some good massage-type therapy for him to get him to relax things so that everything goes back into place. In the meantime, he’s getting spoiled rotten, of course, just like Melody is. Honestly, with multiple animals, it’s always something, isn’t it?

Can anyone tell me how to post a picture in a comment here? Please? And is there a size limit? I have a picture I got of Melody on Thursday I want to post. It’s my favorite picture of her EVER, so I think you guys will like it, too!

    • SoccerSue September 14, 2019 / 10:29 am

I need to figure that out, too. I know it’s changed from the way we could do it previously. Maybe someone (Mike?) can do a brief tutorial.

      • SoccerSue September 14, 2019 / 11:00 pm

Thank you. I always hate to bother you with them, though…

    • kermit September 14, 2019 / 9:52 pm

While this may not make you feel any better about Melody, animals with naturally acquired cancer (as opposed to lab-made cancers given to specially-bred rats) help a tremendous amount in research for how the same drug is likely to perform in humans. The same is true for osteoporosis and arthritis drugs.

So as a (hopefully permanent former) cancer patient, thanks for not giving up on Melody and having her as a therapy dog.

What a great way to start my birthday! The Weasleycats on
Cutetropolis; good news from Jan and bonus Lily; good news about sweet Melody. Hopefully Sebastian will feel better soon.

I’m currently enjoying a cuddle from Sevi and hope for more such moments with all the upstairs cats. Have to choose between sewing or playing with my tiny e-spinner today before a nap, a workout, dinner with friends, and then knitting. It’s a “treat yoself” day indeed.

    • N. Fritz September 14, 2019 / 10:50 am

Happy birthday, DebG! or should I say “felix sit tibi dies natalis!”? Also, I learned about different kinds of tabbies from this post!

Trying to get back into a school routine, which is difficult after 4 weeks in the US and 10 days being a tour guide/tourist in Austria. I can now check Lipizzaners and “Sound of Music Tour” off my bucket list!

My schedule this year isn’t ideal. I have to teach evening classes (3 hours on Tuesday nights) at the main branch of our school, which means I either have to find a place to stay overnight or drive 1.25 hours home in the dead of winter. But I’ll get Wednesdays off and I am looking forward to working with “adult” students again…

      • phredsmom September 15, 2019 / 12:41 pm

As long as you can find a bed for Tuesday nights, this doesn’t sound bad at all, Fritzi
It sounds pretty appealing to me. If the sleep place is inexpensive and safe, anyhow.
Have you any friends or relatives nearby?

        • N. Fritz September 15, 2019 / 2:07 pm

Phred’s Mom, I have colleagues who can point me in the right direction. I did this for a year when I had evening classes at my own school and really made the most of it (bubble baths after teaching, a buffet breakfast the next morning). It’ll all work out, I’m sure!

    • Laura September 14, 2019 / 11:05 am

I forgot to wish you a happy birthday, DebG! I hope you and your furry family members have a wonderful day!

    • phredsmom September 15, 2019 / 12:36 pm

Happy, Happy Birthday! Enjoy every minute and savor dinner!
Sounds like a very good day for you.

  4. AJ September 14, 2019 / 9:56 am

Happy Birthday DebG!!!!! Sounds like your day is going to be fab-u-lous. And yes, it’s a good day with all the good news here – love the picture of the boys, so handsome!! Plus pics of beautiful Lily. So happy to hear that you’ll have more time with Melody. Poor Sebastian, sending healing thoughts that his neck unkinks soon.

Gonna be a hot one today here in SoCal, I’m hoping cooler weather comes and stays shortly. We’re heading over to an Electric Vehicle event sponsored by our local electric company. Signed up to test all the latest and greatest models of EVs, maybe we’ll find our next car.

Almost forget, I have a ceiling again!!!! Finally, after several very long months, the property management sent someone out to install drywall and sand/paint the area where they had to do mold remediation. Spent this morning putting pictures back up so now my house looks almost respectable again. Kinda hard to have a pristine home with a 5 month old puppy in residence. He’s doing good but he needs to figure out manners and potty training. I’m trying but some days are better than others. Enjoy the weekend everyone!!

We’re off on a week-long driving trip. Heading over to South Dakota because hubby has never seen Mount Rushmore and I think it’s time he did. 🙂

And of course, now that we’re leaving, Lahara has started acting like she may be ill. She’s almost lost her voice and for the past few days has just been squeaking instead of meowing. She seems fine otherwise, though- eating (turning her nose up at her treats but we just got her some new dry food and she loves it, so I think maybe she’s just holding out for more of that), drinking, purring, using the litter box normally, etc. So hopefully she’ll be OK while we’re gone and we’ll make a vet appt when we get back if she’s not back to normal. My mom is cat-sitting and one of her biggest fears is that something will happen while we’re gone.

  6. Ricky & Bibi's Mom September 14, 2019 / 11:01 am

Happy birthday, DebG, and congratulations to all with happy news!

Bibi and I are shortly going to our first agility training class. I’m not interested in competition, but Bibi is a bit of a jumper and I hope she’ll find it fun to expend energy running around an obstacle course. I’ve never done anything like this before—should be interesting.

  7. Duckie 🐥 September 14, 2019 / 11:49 am

Happy weekend all. Sounds like no one is truly down-down today.
    Happy birthday, DebG!
We’re somewhat up-in-the-air right now with finances. Hubby has a new supervisor at work, and is NOT happy. He’s talking about quitting and going back to landscaping, which is an indicator of how horrible things are. So far five of his coworkers have come up to me and asked me to puke on the supervisor’s desk.
Gorgeous rain here, and cool enough to enjoy a mug of tea. I’ve started with my crafting again, and might try to sell some in our church’s Christmas craft fair.
We’re going to try making wine this fall. Hubby has my dad all excited about it, and he’s willing to let things happen over there. Blackberry, blueberry and then a mixed cider.
Hubby watched Les Miserables last night, and I had this sudden idea of Harry Potter as a musical. Texted a couple of friends with the idea, and we collapsed in hysterics trying to figure out Voldemort’s song. Kept waking up during the night laughing.
I’m still not fully recovered from that health low a few weeks ago, and I have a feeling it’s going to haunt me this winter. I’m tired all the time, and I can feel it in my lungs.
Duckie has settled in to his new home, and his new roommates quickly showed him what the bird treat stick was for. I bought him a swing, and I’m waiting for a pic of him using it. Last time I went to see him, I whistled the tones that I used for greeting him here, and he cocked his head at me. So I cried.
Busy week coming up, with possible change in hubby’s job situation. I wish I could just win a million dollars and let him retire.
    Have a great week, everyone.

    • Debg September 14, 2019 / 12:45 pm

Duckie, there are Harry Potter musicals on Youtube, done with puppets. They’re hilarious. My fave is the one about wizard swears.

        Wow!

    • Dulcie September 14, 2019 / 9:27 pm

      “puking on the supervisor’s desk”
      That should be a thing.

      • phredsmom September 15, 2019 / 12:52 pm

First time I read it as “puking on supervisor’s neck”!

    • phredsmom September 15, 2019 / 12:50 pm

Supervisors that uniformly and widely disliked don’t usually last very long. They tend to
self-destruct. Hubster and cohorts don’t need to do a thing against him, don’t give him
any ammunition, just let his poor people skills work their inevitable magic. It’s hard,
but not worth quitting over unless he is doing real nasties. Is there HR that can be
      consulted? I feel for him.

  8. Lucy's Mom September 14, 2019 / 12:10 pm

Happy Birfday, DebG!! Jan, congrats on your new and improved walking status! ‘Bout time you recuperated enough to cater to Little Miss Thing’s every whim. Laura, I know that in the months and years to come you’ll be so grateful for having had this quality time with your baby girl. ❤

I feel like I went to sleep last night and woke up in November. It was only 44 degrees when I got up at 5am! (just north of Boston) 😮

    • phredsmom September 15, 2019 / 12:54 pm

I can’t wait for Fall temps and sweater weather! Just put away some shorts
      and light tees in anticipation.

I went out to get lunch on Friday and my car said it was 69 degrees!

    Happy Caturday everyone else!

Happy birthday and congrats on the good news DebG!

  13. Tara September 14, 2019 / 11:10 pm

Happy Birthday DebG! The Weasley-kitties are stunning. Are they as mischievous as their name sakes?
It’s sounds like good news all around at Cutetropolis. I’m so pleased to read about it. Hoping for a lovely day for us all tomorrow!

Aw it’s just like my ornj boys Odin and Loki, same with the markings and differences in color too from what I can see! Odin is a buff and Loki more orange. <3

    • phredsmom September 15, 2019 / 12:58 pm

Perfect for a quinceanera! Can’t figure out how to get a tilde in here to spell
      it right!

      • allein 🐾 September 15, 2019 / 1:45 pm

I picked that picture cuz it’s so pretty with the pink flowers. (Actually, they look like a pair of earrings my parents got me from Bermuda years ago.)

When I want properly-spelled foreign words with accents or other marks I usually just google the word; it’s bound to show up in the results with the proper markings, and then I just copy and paste into my comment.

        Quinceañera

(Alternatively, if I have excel handy, I might go to the insert special characters menu and find it in there, but google’s usually quicker.)

        • Laura September 15, 2019 / 1:55 pm

You can also search for “charmap” on your computer, which will give you a map of all the characters available in whatever font you choose from the list. Then you can just click on the character you want and copy it, or you can use your number pad and, holding down the Alt key, type the number of the character you want. So an ñ is Alt-241.

I put a link to my character map on my taskbar so I can always access it quickly and easily for those different characters that come up so commonly — all the different accented letters, symbols for currency, etc.

          • allein 🐾 September 15, 2019 / 2:10 pm

I never thought about the character map (I knew it existed…). I used to know a couple alt-codes for some non-standard punctuation but I can’t remember them now.

            • Laura September 15, 2019 / 2:17 pm

It’s very useful. I like to use the proper symbols and accents — just picky, I guess — and at one point was working on a job where we had to use them, so I made myself a “cheat sheet” of all the vowels with the different accents, the ñ, etc. it’s a lot faster to just use the number pad than to go to Google and look around, although that works, too! especially for less common characters, like the ones used in Icelandic, ð and Þ — those I usually end up Googling, too, because they’re hard to find on the character map.
