Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to the weekend, Cutetropolitans! Time to unwind after a hard work week, crack open that novel you’ve been itching to read, and… say hello to Mrs. Hattie Perkins, who once again has decided to insert herself into the story. Well, at least we get to see her pretty face this time. Thanks for the picture, JEC!

Hey pretty girl. Ummm, no I wasn’t trying to read that book. I’d much rather sit here and admire your lovely eyebrow dots. 😘

Bitter cold here (New England) but at least there’s no wind. And the sun is shining! Stay warm, my friends. 😊

Such a pretty girl!! Thanks for letting us see her face. Why are cats such jerks sometimes and then we still ooh and ahh thinking they just so cute and adorable??

My foster kitty was a combo of this and the sphinx kitty from yesterday. Lying all over me as I’m trying to get out of bed this morning and I’m doing the potty emergency dance. Everywhere I moved, she stayed right on top of me. Then was blocking the bathroom door, it’s like get out of the way TT!!!! Dang cat, but I still think she’s pretty special. Good news, in the two weeks she’s been with me, she’s gained about a pound. She goes for a medical check up today and fingers crossed, she goes on the adoption floor. Otherwise, if they feel she needs to put on some more weight then I’ll have a kitty visitor over Christmas.

As of 12 noon yesterday, I am on work break til January 2nd!! Whoo Hoo!!! This weekend is final present shopping plus some hockey plus some regular errands. I have a few projects I want to work on over the next week or so but I’ll just go with the flow and see what happens.

    Have a good weekend!

Kitty loves you AJ. And I am pretty sure she doesn’t understand the importance of the bathroom…seeing as there’s no litter box in there…😁 must just be a place with a special chair hee hee!

Happy Caturday Solstice, everyone! This week, I’m actually chiming in instead of lurking. Things have been a little difficult the past few weeks, and when my depression flares up, I just retreat. Now I’m back on track, and thanks to some suggestions from peeps here (from waaaay back), I’ve started taking black cohosh to help with the mood swings. Ahh, menopause.

I’m off work until next Thursday, which means no long commutes for a while! Hooray! Leaving the house in the dark, and then returning in the dark, has not helped my depression at all. And with tonight’s solstice, we’ll turn a corner and head back into longer daylight hours.

My holiday staycation will include knitting, sewing, spinning, and best of all some long-desired time in the dye studio. I’ve got a big crate of sweaters and yarn (mostly handspun) that need to be dyed. Time to start heating water in the turkey roaster! Catch you all later!

Welcome back Deb G, glad to hear you’re doing better. And your projects sound fab! Going through menopause too and yeah it sucks. Low dose of HRT worked wonders for me. I have a lot of plant allergies so the all natural route wasn’t a good fit for me. Whatever works, I say. And bring on the sun/light now that we’ve hit the Solstice.

I’m glad you feel a bit better, DebG.

    Having a sleepy lazy day.
I was all prepared to work my butt off today and the beginning of next week, as we thought hubby would have Wednesday, Thursday and Friday off. I was planning to spend three days with him doing absolutely nothing. Then yesterday we found out he only gets Wednesday off, so hurrying is not necessary.
I’m down about that, but my bff is going to take me to Joann’s in Bellingham on Friday, so I still get time off.
Crazy busy Christmas week coming up. Lots of family get togethers.
Have a great day, Miss Hattie, and everyone else.

Happy Solstice, all! Fittingly, yesterday was the darkest day in Seattle in the 20 years the University of Washington has been measuring and recording solar radiation. It was also the 5th rainiest day on record, which is saying a lot for Seattle. Made for an interesting commute- detours and heavier traffic due to trees down, water over roadways, etc.

This morning I’m going to a super-sale that one of the local businesses has every year. I almost missed it, as I didn’t hear about it until yesterday and today is the last day, but I’m hoping there will be something left. Then just a little grocery shopping to get what we need for Christmas dinner, and over to an acquaintance’s house to pick up a raffle item I won. The local Facebook photography group I’m in makes up a calendar every year using members’ photos, and while they’re selling the calendars they also raffle off four canvas prints made from previous years’ calendar photos (all proceeds benefit the local food bank). And this year I won one of the prints! It’s a photo taken by one of my friends, so even better!

Later this afternoon my cat and I will be recreating the photo of Mrs. Hattie Perkins. 🙂

I ❤️ Hattie! She can lay all over my book/kindle anytime!

I went to Leeds on Thursday for my last theatre outing of 2019, a ballet version of ‘Cinderella’. There was a bit of unscheduled drama in the first act when the elements of the kitchen set, instead of fitting together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, crashed into each other, causing the curtain to be lowered for a few minutes until the problem could be fixed. In 35 years as a frequent theatre-goer I’ve never seen anything like it! Oh, and on the outskirts of York I noticed a funny sign at the side of the road:

    SLOW
    HEDGEHOGS

That’s actually interesting. The hedgehog lifts its paws really high with each step, very close to its body.

      Roadhog.

Ani, Teddy and myself are all doing well today. This morning I took a stray cat to the animal shelter in hopes that he can be re-homed. He’s a very friendly male tabby, about three months, who began to hang around my area recently. I posted his pictures to a neighborhood discussion group but nobody recognized him.

I didn’t want him to become a permanent stray like the other cats in the neighborhood. He’s very friendly and affectionate and deserves a shot at a forever home. I hope he finds it.

    • dubravkamcvmd December 21, 2019 / 2:20 pm

Glad to hear everyone is well. Kind of you to take the kitteh to the shelter. Are there an unusual number of stray cats in your neighborhood or are you just watchful? I don’t know what makes an area attractive to ferals.

    • Debg December 21, 2019 / 2:47 pm

Great to hear! Is Teddy Bear now free from the cone of shame? Good luck to your stray. My yard collects lots of cats; I don’t know if they’re strays or just outdoor cats. They all run away when I approach.

      • Not That Mike The Other Mike December 21, 2019 / 3:55 pm

Teddy Bear has been out of the cone since last weekend and is in great spirits. The awareness this morning that there was an unseen kitten in another part of the house seemed to wind him up more than usual, and he was scampering around, pouncing on toys and startling Ani.

Several people, including me, in my neighborhood feed the strays, so it’s obvious why they hang out here.

Forgot to mention that Mrs. Hattie J looks as calm and regal as ever. Lovely girl!

  12. Laura December 21, 2019 / 3:16 pm

Hi, all. Things have been (relatively) quiet here. Yoofi has been gradually learning to behave a teeny bit better, not that she’s calmed down very much, but we’re getting used to her and we’re Yoofi-proofing the house a lot more. So that helps. And she LOVES to go to the dog park and run around with the other dogs, so that’s a great way for her to burn up some of her energy, too. greyhounds may be typically low-energy, but we sure got the exception to that rule!

Miss Hattie is adorable, as always! She’s a very elegant cat, isn’t she?

DebG, I’m glad you’re getting a handle on your menopausal depression. I went into a completely black depression when menopause hit, just bam! and it hit. I needed a few years of low-dose HRT, too, but by the time I stopped it I was able to get by with the herbal remedies, too. Black cohosh is incredibly helpful, not just for mood swings but also for hot flashes. I just wish I could find a remedy for night sweats; to this day they’re completely unpredictable. Ah, the delights of getting older — and all the things they never told us about menopause!

    Enjoy the festive season, everyone!
