Weekend Open Thread

Happy Leap Caturday, fellow Cutetropolitans! Reader Tara O. has a new phone with a new camera and a new batch of photos of her cat Butch. Here’s the story:

He was a feral cat for a few years in my garden. Wouldn’t come anywhere near me. After about a year, I caught him to have him fixed and get some shots. A few days into his recuperation, he broke out of a window and spent another year outside, dashing away when I got too close.

One night after a BBQ, I left a little plate of goodies near where he was hiding and I think that’s when the penny dropped for him – “Oh! food provided by human? warm/safe place to sleep? lots of scritches? I’ve been so wrong…” He moved in very quickly after that. He is now the cuddliest of my three kitties and follows me everywhere.

Are you getting my good side?
cat
Just kidding — it’s ALL good side.

Here he is, “guarding my knitting”, (actually stealing the warm spot on the couch where I was just sitting). He has beautiful whiskers, and a very pink nose.

Scritches first, then knitting.

Oh, he’s soo handsome. And very distinguished looking. Glad he decided coming in from the cold was a good thing. Thank you Tara for not giving up on this boyo.

I am trying to recover from the week from hell. All I know is the receptionist/office assistant at work is never allowed to go on vacation again. I’m her back up so I was busy doing both hers and my job duties plus another colleague went out for surgery so I was helping cover her work. Argh!!! By last night, I was crashed out on the couch and started falling asleep around 7:30/8:00 pm.

At least I have a fun weekend to look forward to. Alma mater basketball watch party today, hair cut tomorrow and meeting up with a friend at some point. Plus time with hubby and the usual errands.

Have a great weekend and if you’re in the UK (thinking of you Alice Shortcake), please stay safe with all the storms.

The weather forecast for York doesn’t look too bad, although it will be windy tonight. The River Ouse is still very high, though, so I haven’t been able to take my usual weekly long walk on the floodplain meadows near my home. Despite the recent storms it hasn’t been particularly cold; last week I actually found a couple of greenfly on my roses!

I completed my first soft toy this morning, a white cat wearing a pinafore dress. It wasn’t an unqualified success, mainly because I tried to machine stitch some awkward fiddly bits when hand-sewing would have given a neater result, but it’s not bad for a beginner. I plan to donate it to the Cats Protection charity shop in the city centre.

Changing the subject somewhat, I was thrilled to discover that Opera North will be doing a semi-staged touring production of Wagner’s ‘Parsifal’ next summer. I’ve been waiting for this since I saw their Ring Cycle at Leeds Town Hall a few years ago. It never ceases to amuse me that you can always tell when a Wagner opera is being performed by the sheer amount of food and drink being taken into the theatre for consumption during two long intervals!

    Happy Leap Day!

So I haven’t mentioned it but my dad got a new hip on Wednesday. All went well and he came home yesterday. I went to see him after work and stayed for dinner. He’s doing well getting around with the walker. He’ll continue physical therapy and maybe even be able to play golf by the time the weather warms up.

Saw this on the news last night…I’d watch basketball if it was like this..

What a wonderful story of kitty rescue! Butch is one handsome, and lucky, fella!

  4. debg February 29, 2020 / 9:55 am

Tara, I’m so glad the penny dropped for Butch. What a darling, and what a great story! Love your knitting too.

AJ, sorry about the wretched week.

Allein, if I could play basketball like that wawa, my world would be very different. Hope your dad’s recovery is quick and painless.

    Amyliz, HI!!!

Into the dye studio today to mix a bunch of stock solutions, and then–FINALLY–try some of the advanced techniques I’ve been learning online. A glazing technique, where you layer colors on a skein of yarn, has me drooling with pleasure like my cat Sevi. Watching that lesson was like a religious experience.

Hugs to you all, and if weather is headed your way, stay safe.

They don’t show much of the guy, but it was Christian Stoinev, who was on America’s Got Talent (three times, in seasons 2 and 9 and in this year’s “Champions” season). The dog is either Scooby or Percy (but I think it’s Scooby). (He did a hand balancing act with the dog – Scooby the first two times, and he had Percy, who is younger, this year.)

As nice as he is to look at, I fully admit I was rooting for him because of the dog.

Best kitty rescue story I’ve heard in a looong time! Not sure who’s more lucky – Tara or Butch. ❤😸

  6. Faye February 29, 2020 / 10:10 am

I had a big red tabby boy named Butch. Glad your boy figured out the good life.

And… finally better from flu. Geez that was a truly frightening experience. But a blessing came out of my horrible experience. I have a new doctor who is an internist, gastroenterologist, and researcher who already discovered a huge mistake my endocrinologists were making. I can jettison four really mediocre doctors in one shot for this compassionate expert. Now some testing. Brain MRI 🤪.

Catching up on the most basic stuff that didn’t get done for two weeks. Sweeping, laundry etc. Normal eating, walking more.

Eight weeks to warm weather, I’ll take it.

    • allein 🐾 February 29, 2020 / 10:33 am

Pets named Butch always make me giggle, because my dad’s family calls him Butch. 🙂

      • N. Fritz February 29, 2020 / 11:22 am

Our neighbors had a miniature plack poodle named Butch. Always seemed like a paradox.

        • allein 🐾 February 29, 2020 / 11:26 am

lol…yeah, my dad’s not exactly a “butch” kinda guy. He’s basically a computer nerd who likes golf, bowling, and softball (he used to play softball in a work league; he also umpired up until a few years ago).

        • Faye February 29, 2020 / 1:42 pm

          Hahahahaha.

    • dubravkamcvmd February 29, 2020 / 10:42 am

The new doctor is wonderful news!!!! As we get older doctors become more and more important.

      • Faye February 29, 2020 / 1:45 pm

        Exactly.

    • Debg February 29, 2020 / 1:22 pm

Faye, good news about your recovery and your doctor!

Hi all! I just noticed that I omitted one of Tara’s pictures from this post, so scroll up and take another look at the first picture. It’s the quintessential cat expression.

    • allein 🐾 February 29, 2020 / 10:55 am

Ha, I thought that second caption seemed like something was missing!

  8. Duckie 🐥 February 29, 2020 / 12:08 pm

    Hooray, it’s the weekend.
Greetings to all. A quiet day here, after a lovely wind/rainstorm last night.
Hubby’s taking me out for a deliberately late birthday lunch today. Then we are going to spend the rest of the weekend doing nothing.
We finally decided on what our dream cats would be. He wants a Bengal, after watching the kittens on the slide. I want a Siamese, so I can have someone to talk with. And we both want a Maine Coon.
Duckie is snuggled down in her food dish, for whatever reason makes sense to her. I was wondering: does anyone have an idea on how to GENTLY catch a budgie so her claws can be trimmed? I tried to yesterday, but the feathers flew everywhere and I got supremely chewed out. And on.
    Have a fantastic weekend, all.

I haven’t posted anything for such a long time because I have so much trouble doing so, but today is a special day for me and I figured it’d be worth it to ask you to join me in celebrating what I think we decided was the 8th anniversary of my asking my then boyfriend to marry me – it being February 29. I had to do it on the phone because we weren’t going to be seeing each other that day. His response, after a brief pause, was, “Where’s my ring?”

I’ve been lurking so I’m at least somewhat up on people’s comings and goings – Faye, glad you’re doing better, looking to seeing some art from you soon! Tara, what a gorgeous boy Butch is – though I think I’d lose in a tussle with him if that first picture is to be believed! Duckie, I hope all works out with hubster’s work, Happy Birthday, glad you have your Duckie II. Everyone, stay well – I can see how busy you all are, I am mightily impressed. Allein, best wishes for your Dad.

I was in California to see my ailing brother and his wife whom I will recommend for sainthood. Getting away was so difficult, getting my hubster help to put drops into my dear Clementine’s eye – with his Parkinson’s his hand shakes too much for him to be able to do it. I’m preparing for a House concert in April that I’ll be doing with a dear old friend with whom I performed English Music Hall many years ago. We will be doing some of that as well as folkie stuff. Really looking forward to that.

I’ll go back to lurking again until I have time to figure out Mike’s advice about how to sort out this business of posting without having to erase every password and filling in all of my information every single time.

Happy Anniversary! You are one of my favourite Cutetropolis posters (The regulars are all great), nice to hear from you again. Wld love to see the Music Hall performances. I mostly lurk…all the best

      • Murray C. March 2, 2020 / 9:14 pm

Why, thank you, HMJC! Nice to be missed. And if you’re anywhere near Bethlehem, PA, you could see the Music Hall!

Glad you’re feeling better with a new doctor, Faye! Anything with flu symptoms these days is scary – the woman I share an office with has a daughter at a local high school with a COVID-19 positive student. They’re closed through Monday to disinfect the whole building. And they just announced the first local death from it.

Tara, I’m totally jealous at your tuxie! Butch is gorgeous and looks just like my Pepper:

  11. Tara February 29, 2020 / 4:12 pm

Hello All! Thank you for your kind words about my handsome Butchie! And thank you for posting him Mr. Mike. He is so sweet and LOVES being an indoor/outdoor cat. Jan, your Pepper is an absolute doppleganger for Butch, right down to the spats.

Glad to hear people are recovering well and planning fun for the weekend.

Murray C! we miss you and it’s so nice to hear from you. Congratulations on your wonderful anniversary. I love leap year stories. I had a student who’s grandmother was born on Feb 29th. They both turned 16 the same year and had a joint sweet sixteen birthday party.

I’m just home from running lots of errands, needed lots of basics – lightbulbs, batteries, cat litter, sponges, you know, all the boring stuff. I’ve been putting it off for a while. Lucky me – I didn’t realize there would be so many sales! As a treat for myself I went to Bath & Body works for my favorite body cream and everything was 50% off. I also went to my favorite gardening shop and picked up bulb fertilizer. I’m going outside before dark to “spread the love.”

Allein… I can’t wait to share your joke with my dad. He will love it. It reminds me of my favorite “type-themed” joke:

Comic Sans walks into a bar and the bartender says, “I’m sorry, we don’t serve your type.”
