Maru’s Core Competence

Like all of us, Maru and Hana are stuck at home with A) nothing to do, and; B) lots of toilet paper that the store wouldn’t take back. So what better thing to do to pass the time than… toilet paper core obstacle course!ย First, they must navigate through the cores without knocking them over.

And then it’s on to the steeplechase event, where the cores — and the stakes — get higher with every pass.

    2mins in the first video
“Mom, do you see what she did?”
    XD

I wonder how much time it takes for her to set up each attempt…

Love that Maru wouldn’t jump anymore once he realized he could just walk through. Why waste the energy?

There must have been an awful lot of treats involved to get them to go back and forth so many times. Hana has quite a graceful jump, while Maru is more like a bulldozer. ๐Ÿ˜‚

When Maru cares, he is far more precise than Hana. But I was shocked, I tell you, shocked, that he quit playing halfway through the second video.

I know, who could’ve seen that coming?!

You can lead a cat to a toilet paper core but you can’t make him jump.

At first when I saw this setup I wondered, Do you figure the cats ever think, “What the eff, mom? I know we’re in show business, but where do you come up with this stuff??” (They’d be thinking this in Japanese Cat, of course.) And then I felt like a prophet, because this was like some kind of tipping point for mugumogu and her cats. When Hana figured out nothing bad happened if she tipped the cores over, she stopped trying. She’s less fastidious than Maru, who kept tiptoeing just because he’s fussy. But then on the jumping, he learned the lesson even better than she did. “Yeah, nothing bad happens. Why are we even playing along with this??” Now, admittedly, they did keep walking between the cardboard sheets when they had the whole rest of the house; they know where the treats come from. But doing the tricks? It was an actor’s strike.

Also, I guess she taped two rolls together to make each big roll? Because those look more like paper towel rolls than TP rolls to me.

Isn’t it interesting how cats will deliberately whap objects off a table or shelf, but delicately tip toe around to avoid knocking things over on the floor? In summary: cats are weird.

NTFTOF, thatโ€™s a huge part of their charm.

Once Hana reached the WTF stage and stopped trying, I howled with laughter. Maru IS perfect, by the way.
