“What’s a bird got to do to get a little service in this place? Do I take a number? Get in line? What’s the procedure here? Hey, is anybody even working back there?”
Via Laughing Squid: “A wayward pelican who wandered into a beachside fish and chips shop in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia, took a place in line and very politely waited until called. The hungry bird patiently remained in line for a while, but after a bit, the bird decided to take a peek around the counter to see why the service was so slow.”
The latest Ologies podcast episode was on pelicans. They didn’t mention this behavior…
More dignified than the humans.
I can’t believe no one gave it fish!

That pelican is a frequent visitor at that fish and chip store at Kiama, he always gets given fish by the proprietors.
Thanks! Happy to hear it.
This video broke my heart. I give up.
That is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen.
It’s amazing on several levels. Does this happen often in the shop? Sorry for nuffing, but those people seem really careless about interacting with a large wild animal. It’s pre-COVID, which explains why nobody is masked or preserving social distancing. But letting a little toddler so close? Just seems dangerous to me.
Pelicans won’t hurt children. Otherwise they wouldn’t be allowed to deliver them.
Oops I guess that’s storks. Never mind.
You’re making me LOL!!!!
Hopefully none of those kids smell like fish.
I had the same concerns about interaction. I didn’t even think about masks (a first for me since this whole thing started). But since nothing bad happened, I choose, for this moment, to just be enchanted. I need enchantment.
I just checked the date of the video: October 2019. The virus was probably already in China, but it’s well before most of us would have realized it.
I’m glad you went with the enchantment. I couldn’t get past the lack of masks–jealousy, I suppose! And that pelican was NOT social distancing at all.
Something my mother would say, “That bill could put your eye out.”
I loved watching this! The best part is the little boy in the brown cardigan, completely nonplussed about the bird, only focused on the ice cream freezer! LOL!
So polite and patient! What made me laugh is how unfazed everyone is and that no one shooed Mr. Pelican out of the shop. And yes, I would have been “that” person and tossed him a few pieces of fish. Maybe I’d make a little trail and strongly encourage him to leave the shop.
