Welcome to another Caturday! This weekend’s conversation cat is a bit unusual, to say the least. As reader Gigi the cat lady explains, he’s just another casualty of the trend towards home haircuts:
My 14 year old cat T-Two had matts in is fur because he hates being brushed, I usually just shave the matts but since we’ve had a heat wave here in Québec and will have another one next week I thought I would give him a trim. OMG! Look what I did to my poor cat!
I would be realllllllly careful for a while because that “trim” has 😈vengeance😈 written all over it!

As my mom said, it’s only hair and it grows back. Hope baby doesn’t start plotting some nefarious vengeance. But just in case I’d hide all the scissors.

Hair always grows back. Cats do not always forgive.
If the fur is matted this badly, you should speak to your vet about adding some supplements to his diet and checking his blood work to make sure he’s not deficient in anything. There’s a good chance he may be missing essential amino acids from his diet, or they’re not getting absorbed.
Powdered L-lysine added to wet cat food can work wonders for matted hair. Cartilage from chicken and pork bones is also beneficial.
Oh, poor T-Two, and poor Gigi! I am sure you will both recover. I remember when Mazzilli had surgery and had to have his rear end shaved. His little naked kitty butt looked so funny, and then he went through the Velcro stage, and then plush … but eventually it all grew back and evened out again. T-Two probably feels better having the mats removed, though perhaps he wonders what those unusual breezes are. Hang in there!
Please calm down everybody, I sent the photo because I though you would get a giggle out of it, I didn’t think people would get upset about it.
Just so you know I fixed the trim later in the day. his under coat is very thick and almost wool like and gets matted easily and since he really hates getting brushed he gets mats.
T-Two wasn’t upset he much prefers to get shaved to getting brushed, he just gets restless so I had to stop and finish later. And he gets treats after, that’s what he is doing in the photo, eating the treats I just gave him.
Also T-Two is perfectly healthy according to the vet, he doesn’t need any supplement or vitamins, he is 15 almost 16 years old and still acts like a kitten sometimes.
Don’t listen to the negatives. Thankfully not too much of that here. Though sure it was intended out of concern, I think all of us here know we all love our fur babies and take bestest care of them.
Thanks for the picture and story! I’ll admit it’s not the type of photo that I typically use to lead off the weekend, but I thought it had a place here. And T-Two is indeed a gorgeous cat, as we can see in the other photo you posted.
I’m glad you’ve confirmed you’re both okay. I should have realized you wouldn’t send the picture unless you saw the funny side (after all, you are a Cat Lady), but even so, now I feel more free to giggle. T-Two is truly a lovely kitty, and it’s really nice to know how well he is doing at his age!

I think T-Two just told Gigi: “Mom it is so hot in here, could we remove my onesie, please?”
T-Two is lovely both dressed and undressed.
I also had to shave Marci II once, because he had got stuck in mouse glue at the neighbour’s barn.
He was a grey tabby and I was totally surprised to see what a thick grey undercoat he was wearing under the striped overcoat.
Once T-Two realizes he’s not nearly as hot and sweaty as before — and that his risk of getting hairballs from grooming has just dropped — maybe he’ll be a little more forgiving? (It might help if mom regularly prostrates herself before kitty and begs for mercy.)
Aww, poor T-Two! Glad the trim job got finished later! My cat Spectra used to get mats in her undercoat too that I’d have to trim out, but never so bad that I’d have to shave her; but then she was a medium coat not long-haired. Eventually she came around to being brushed so it wasn’t too bad.

I have to share a photo of Ani (right) and Teddy. They get along ok, although Teddy likes to chase Ani sometimes. Despite this, Ani still runs up to Teddy, hoping he’ll lick her on the forehead. And yesterday morning they sat next to each other like two old friends.

Is Teddy so much bigger than Ani? Teddy looks like such a sweet big boy!
He’s a big fella and everyone who meets him comments on how calm and friendly he is. He seems to have made an effort to understand what Ani wants from him, and I’m very happy for that.

T-Two is a beautiful kitty- he reminds me a little of our Angel cat (RIP). She would get mats, too, and we’d have to shave them off periodically. We called her our patch work kitty. 😀
It’s OK T-Two and my 2 other cats are strictly indoor cats, they’re not even tempted to sneak out if the door swing open between two trips when I take in the groceries.
