Happy Caturday! Reader Squiddy, Bertie and Cheshire are back, but Bertie isn’t really feeling it in this first picture
After two trips to the emergency vet in less than a week for two different illnesses, Bertie just calls it a day. He will “cat” another time. Can’t say I blame him, poor guy.
Cheshire continues to be more optimistic
Hello, I’m so sorry that the open thread is late getting to the homepage, but I accidentally backdated it so that it didn’t appear.
Glad that’s all it was. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who was worried.
Relieved to see the post here! Thanks Mike.
I hope Bertie recovers quickly. Give him a gentle cuddle for me. He’s had a rough week.
Poor Bertie! He does look very snug and comfortable though. Here’s to a swift recovery.
I’m with you, Bertie.
Peeps, I got news yesterday that’s leaving me feeling a bit frantic. I need cataract surgery. Before I join Bertie, has anyone else had this done?
Not me personally, but my mom had it last month and it was pretty easy. They use conscious sedation, so you’re not totally out, and the procedure itself is really quick- about 5 minutes. She didn’t have a lot of pain afterwards. She had to put drops in her eye for a few days after. And she’s seeing so much better from that eye now, she can’t wait to get the second one done!
Oh Duckie good luck with the surgery. I know it is stressful because after all – its your eyes!! But I have heard all good things about the surgery and that is from quite a number of people. All said EASY except for my neighbor. But the only complaint he had was a feeling of sand in his eye for a couple of days. But even so, he was VERY pleased at what a breeze it was!!
Science and modern medicine…there should be an altar somewhere!! 😁
And Squiddy! Dear Bertie has been through a bit of a mill. But he’s ok now right? Hope so. Give him little pets between his eyes for me.
Haven’t had it myself but a close friend and neighbor had it recently. Very easy and quick. I empathize though – surgery – eyes – EEK!
My dad had it when he was 80? 81? He worried about it a lot beforehand, and I told him it was a lot like Lasik (which I’ve had and will never regret). Afterwards, he admitted that I’d been right.
Proper eyesight is an unmitigated blessing. Get rid of those cataracts.
I’ve had cataract surgery in one eye, . Most people I talked to who had the surgery said that the operation itself was quick and painless, that they felt no pain after and that their vision was good the next day or the day after.
But there are always exception and it seems I was one of them. The operation was in fact painless but I had a lot of pain after, it felt like a piece of glass in my eye. I also had blurry vision and had to wear sunglasses even indoors because any kind of light hurt my eye. The pain and blurry vision gradually got better and after 2 weeks my vision was fine. Still even if my experience was not ideal, I will have the second eye done eventually when the pandemic is over.
My Mom has had it done on each eye, and it could not have gone more smoothly. Everyone I know who has had cataract surgery has had a very positive experience, and much better vision as a result. The prospect of surgery is always nervous-making, but this is far less of a challenge than many other types of surgery. Take some deep breaths, and look forward to … looking forward!
My cataract surgery was three years ago and everything went well. Most bothersome part was the drops afterwards, that seemed to take forever. I am nearsighted and knew that the new lenses require reading glasses, but it still was a shock that I could not see clearly close up – night reading in bed did not work anymore. Overnight I had turned into a grandmother who was constantly looking for her glasses. I am ok now, no therapy needed…
Bertie is feeling a lot better, but I have to keep a close eye on him for the foreseeable future. Last year, he had surgery for hairballs for overlicking himself. Three months later, he went back for crystals in his urine (the vet thinks his overlicking may have been a coping mechanism for dealing with the discomfort of the crystals) and for licking all the fur off his tummy again. And then two days later, he ate a rubber band. He is still in the cone and will be for a few more weeks. And will be on special food for the rest of his life.
I still would never give him up. He is mine forever and ever. Crazy and stressful and expensive, but I can’t imagine not having him in my life.
Cheshire continues to be in perfect health and a crazy angel.
Poor Bertie! We’re crossing all our paws for him here.
Awwww, Cuddle them a little more for me tonight.
Oh, golly. Feel better Bertie—and Squiddy! Sometimes it’s the ones who need the most care who dig deepest into our hearts. But I’m glad you have Cheshire to balance out some of the crazy.
Get well soon, Bertie, and stay in bed for as long as you want!
My dad finally got an appointment for his second Covid jab but I’m still waiting to hear about my first one. Vaccinations will have to speed up a bit if we’re to achieve Billy Bunter’s target of a return to near-normality on June 21st (yes, an exact date from a man who claims to be in favour of “data, not dates”. Idiot.)
Finally, I’ve just noticed that one of my comments on Bored Panda – I post as Julia Atkinson – has achieved 474 likes! struts about a bit
Whenever I saw Julia Atkinson comments on Panda, I was always wondering if it was you, Alice. ( But I was too afraid to ask) So yay, finally I have the answer!
Now I gotta pay more attention to BP comments…
My parents get their second this Thursday.
My dad gets his second this week. My mom had a reaction to the preservative in the Moderna vaccine and is now in the Allergic Reaction database. My bf’s dad got his first shot a week ago today, but us younger folk are still waiting for the call.
My mom, age 90, finally got her first vaccine yesterday, and her second is scheduled a month from now. Getting her an appointment was an absolute nightmare until supplies became more plentiful in NYC. Then suddenly it was a breeze. My dad, 87, got his first very recently, too. (He’s on the Left Coast.)
I’m not eligible yet, but I’m content to wait. Not that I’m good at patience, but I can’t see why I should jump ahead of anyone who’s legitimately in the queue before me. Whatever else the pandemic has taught me, it has made it clear that I am not an Essential Worker.
Congrats on all the likes!
Duckie, I’ve known lots of people who have had cataract surgery and it’s been pretty much a piece of cake. I’m sure there are exceptions and occasionally their vision wasn’t as crisp as they might have hoped, but by and large it’s very safe and effective. How you respond to anesthesia may be a factor – nausea, that sort of thing – but everything I’ve heard is that it’s a miracle – colors are brighter, outlines are sharper.
Poor little Bertie! I do wish him well again and soon, dear little thing. And Cheshire is gorgeous.
My hubster is scheduled for his first jab, but I have to wait because I’m not old enough to qualify in our medical group. He’s 1a I’m 1b. I’m just focusing on the “not old enough” for now -that never happens anymore!😜
I read “hubster” as “hamster” and just for a few seconds my imagination went wild.
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🥰
I can’t wait to tell him!!!
Another Caturday… looks like it’s a good thing I slept late.
My uncle passed away Wednesday morning, after a little over a week on hospice. I feel bad my dad and his sister didn’t get to go see him (they did get to talk to him on the phone a few times, during lucid moments) but at least he got to be at home, surrounded by his family. I hadn’t seen him in a few years, at least.
He always said I was his favorite niece and I’m sure it was true. 😊
I’m so sorry for your loss, Allein. Marci is sending his best purrs to comfort you!
So sorry Allein. I know it was expected but still tough. How nice to have the memory of being his favorite niece. 💕
Well, I was his only niece, but that’s beside the point. 😉
I remember you saying that you were the only niece. But I am sure he had a special spot for you in your heart anyway because of that remark!
Hugs from both Duckies.
I’m sorry. It happens to all of us, but still, it leaves holes in hearts.
So sorry, Allein. I know this has been painful for you and your family–holding you all in my thoughts.
Sorry for your loss; it’s always hard to lose someone. I’m glad he was at home with family, much better than a cold sterile hospital room.
Im so sorry but you and your family. I’m glad he was with loved ones and I hope comfortably cared for.
His daughter is a nurse so she was taking care of him.
My mother, an RN, did that with her mother.
It was painful but in retrospect she was glad that she could be there with her in the end and I think my grandmother knew that her daughter was the one caring for her on some level.
I think and hope that your uncle took comfort from her touch.
I’m terribly sorry for your loss, Allein. I know you will miss him. I’m glad your uncle had as good a passing as possible.
Bibi sends healing puppy kisses.
I can only concur with what others have said, I’m so sorry for your loss and especially that your folks couldn’t see your uncle before he passed. Good that he had his daughter with him, that has to be a consolation for you all.
I wish Bertie a quickie recovery and some calm to Squiddy, it must have been very stressful. I hope Bertie will accept the special diet soon.
Get better soon, Bertie! I’m a little achy myself today, having had a tetanus shot yesterday…
We had a few sun breaks in between downpours this week which Lily took prompt advantage of!
I LOVE this. Let’s hope the same thing happens to our Rover on Mars.
I love all of Liz Climo’s cartoons, so cute 🙂
It’s so good to see 3 of the world’s cutest kitties today! Hugs to you all as you cope with worry and grief. Cuddles to sick kitties. And congrats to people who are getting their COVID jabs.
I’m in self-care mode again–not uncommon for me, but sometimes it kicks into overdrive. The two big work projects that both have deadlines on March 1 have been, umm, stressful. The first one, a spin-along involving blog posts and video, is done for the first week; now I have to get stuff done for weeks 2 and 3.
The second one, updating our sales/shipping/accounting system with a price increase, has me sweating bullets. I’ve prepared all the spreadsheets, but won’t actually know how things go until I get into work on Monday and start importing. My boss had to go out of town for a family emergency, so he can’t be there in person for support. Plus a few mistakes on related parts of this project have destroyed my confidence: when I generate the data, somebody else has to check the data or things can get screwed up.
During all this pressure at work, both my dads have had pacemaker surgery. Bio dad had it a week ago Friday; adoptive dad had it this past Monday. They’re both home and doing well, but I’m a natural worrier.
Hence all the self-care. I’m trying to rebuild my confidence with things I’m good at: knitting, spinning, eating, cuddling kitties, etc. No experiments in the dye studio. No new techniques at the spinning wheel. Plus I’ve treated myself to some retail therapy–new kitty toys/beds, an inexpensive home security system, and a motor for my drum carder, so I can process fiber without shoulder pain. All the while, I keep repeating my mantra: “I’m not a f-up. I’m not a f-up. I’m not a f***-up .” It’s going to be a great weekend.
As for your second project, this is how I spent this week, basically with the same task (among many other minor tasks ofc).
I wish quick recovery to your Dads.
You aren’t a fuck up, you have never been.
Thanks, Ems. I appreciate the vote of confidence.
No disability like destroyed confidence.☹️
DebG…People say you should learn how to “park it” but I have never quite mastered that particular tidbit of advice! However, I think it is a good idea if you can.
And like Ems said…never have been a f-up!! At least it sure doesn’t sound like it to me!!
And of course having two dads in hospital would throw anyone off balance. Hopefully they do well.
Take care of yourself…sounds like your self care plan is just the ticket.
You are most certainly NOT a f***-up. Au contraire, you’ve gotten a heroic amount of good work done under far more than normal pressure. Having to meet two deadlines while you had close family in surgery is hardly a walk in the park.
Nothing that could go wrong with your second project isn’t fixable. So the absolute worst that could happen is having to fix it. And my bet is that it will go right in the first place.
Best wishes to your dads for a speedy, pain-free recovery. Hang in there!
Oh so late to the chin wag today but now I can catch up, congratulate, and commiserate with everyone. First, poor Bertie, hope he’s feeling better soon. And Duckie, I think your cataract surgery will go swimmingly, fingers crossed for little to no pain and a quick recovery time. So sorry to hear about your uncle Allein but at least he was at home with family. DebG, just remember to breath, that’s my trick for when work projects start getting crazy. Plus, just remember there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it’s getting brighter.
Having a busy weekend which is nice. Ran errands all day today and I’m so tired right now. Then tomorrow the Mustang club is doing a cruise out to the desert so there’s most the day gone there. Did grocery and pet shopping at 3 or 4 different stores today. Then, got the car washed and hubby wanted to get prices on replacing the radio in the Mustang. The figure Best Buy quoted was gulp inducing but hey, he doesn’t drink or smoke and he’s using his travel per diem reimbursements so I just closed my eyes and said go for it. But I think we might go to an auto audio specialty store and see what they offer.
Good news! Hubby has now gotten his first jab, he works as a government contractor so he’s considered an essential worker. As an university employee, I’m included in the educator tier that just opened up so I should get my first shot within in the next few weeks as soon as I can make an appt. Here’s to some sense of normalcy returning soon.
I just registered on NJ’s covid vaccine registration site. Not surprisingly, I am eligible “for a later stage” and will get an email when that stage happens.
You’re good at a lot of things so don’t let this discourage you.
There’s a reason why quality control always have a second pair of eyes looking things. Is a compliance it’s an audit and its a procedural thing so if you did make a mistake there’s a reason why its standard to have a separate quality check.
Don’t fall on your sword over this.
Thanks, everybody, for the affirmations and good advice. And you’re right—there’s no mistake that can’t be fixed. I’ll get through this and then try to take a day off.
DEBG – you are the most amazingly competent person I can imagine! And you seem to just charge in and get whatever needs doing done! I am deeply admiring of you. When I can’t figure out how to do something I think “DEBG could do this in a trice”. I hope you take a couple of days off – you deserve it.
Thank you to everyone for your comments. <3
Here’s a cake.
I saw a spoof the other day about hyper realistic cakes. People were trying to cut into all kinds of objects (theoretically believing they were cakes). And of course, you guessed it, someone took the toilet paper cake to the bathroom with them.
I laughed a lot.
Squeeeee who could possibly cut into that?
