Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to the weekend, Cutetropolitans! Today reader Tara O. shares a cat named Jacques, who has enough seniority to get his own corner office:

Jacques doesn’t “help” make the bed anymore. At 17, this is his corner of the bed. He couldn’t care less about my efforts and he’s not budging.

Black cat sits on unmade corner of bed.
The bed’s made enough, move on.

I’m in full agreement with the lovely Jacques’ attitude to bedmaking. You’ve got a cat, you’ve got a bed, isn’t that enough?

Here in England we’ve gone from a glorious late summer to autumn in about a week. Yesterday I was obliged to turn the central heating on for a couple of hours in the evening (gasp!) Not that there’s anything wrong with autumn – in fact I have two short holidays planned, Haworth in November and Canterbury (which I’ve never visited) in December.

Funny incident a couple of days ago: for some time I’ve struggled to read my watch’s mother of pearl effect dial and promised myself a new one. Then, whilst taking a short cut on a dark street, I walked into a wall and smashed the glass. Result: guilt-free new watch!

    • 6rabbits October 7, 2023 / 9:13 am

      Ow!😖

    • Georgiana October 7, 2023 / 10:31 am

Great just as long as you only smashed the watch.

      • Alice Shortcake October 7, 2023 / 1:33 pm

I hit the wall hard enough to stagger backwards, so I was lucky to escape with grazed knuckles and a broken watch. That’ll teach me to walk down an unfamiliar street in the dark whilst watching a couple of cats running about on the other side of the River Ouse…

    • DEBG October 7, 2023 / 11:04 am

Those are the best kind of watches.

You’re just gonna mess it all up anyway, so why bother? (I washed my sheets yesterday so I had to make the bed. It’s about the only time I do.)

Hope you come back from Canterbury with a good tale for us, Alice! (No walking into walls, though.)

      • AJ October 7, 2023 / 10:31 am

Oh my god, I just realized what the dies are made from🤣😂🤣😱🤢. I couldn’t figure out why this was funny or unusual. And I had seen this cartoon a couples times.

        • 6rabbits October 7, 2023 / 10:53 am

Thank you. I could not figure out why this was funny and just gave up! And, yes, ew.

Oh, almost forgot! I HAVE A NEW BUNNY!!!
His name is Pretzel and he is a rescue from about an hour away. He is part English Spot and part mini-Rex, based on his amazing fur! He LOVES to be petted on the head, and HATES to be picked up. But we will work on that!😉
He is amazingly well behaved, has not tried to chew a single cord(!), and loves purusing the house.
I am sooooooo happy with him!
I have tried to copy his photo, but copy and paste doesn’t work. I’ll try and figure out something later!

    • AJ October 7, 2023 / 9:28 am

Yeah for the new bunny!!!! Congrats and he sounds like an absolute sweetheart.

    • allein 🐾 October 7, 2023 / 9:33 am

Yay new bunny! Can’t wait to see him! Love the name. 🥨

I think the only way to post a picture is to post a link to the image somewhere else (I have used my instagram page for that…I don’t really use it for anything else). Or send it to the submissions email and ask NTMTOM to post it.

    • Luv Bunny October 7, 2023 / 10:24 am

I’m so happy for you! He sounds so adorable, bunnitude and all. With time and your love, he’ll probably tolerate being picked up. My Leo hated being picked up but once I had him in my arms, he’d melt and let me walk around the house and to the mailbox with him. Hopefully you can find a way to send a picture, so we can all ooh and ahhh.

    • tara October 7, 2023 / 10:28 am

Oh congrats on new bunny! Looking forward to Pretzel’s debut on Cutetropolis.

    • Georgiana October 7, 2023 / 10:35 am

Congratulation on the new bunny, can’t wait to see a photo!

    • DEBG October 7, 2023 / 11:04 am

Huzzah! Congrats to you both! Pretzel, you hit the jackpot.

      Can’t wait for pix.

Congratulations to everyone in the 6RABBITS household!

Pardon Jacques, mais dormez vous? Such a sleek and handsome haus panther. Andat 17, you deserve any patch of bed you want. I’ve learned to lock my 2 out of the room if I want to get the bed making done in a timely fashion. And talking about locking out or in, I’m such a bad dog mom. I started laundry last night and oops accidentally locked Thor in the laundry room. He moves so quietly and slowly compared to Valkyrie that sometimes I lose track of where he’s at.Luckily it was only a minute or 2.

Good news! I finally finished the Lego Sanderson House! I’ll take a video of it today and post to my FB page. That’s about the only good news I have. Hubby’s work has been going through rounds of layoffs due to not having enough work and yesterday, the call came for him. He will get another 3 weeks of pay and they’re seeing if there’s any positions available in other divisions he can move to. Just time to tighten the belt and cut any unnecessary expenses. Car show today, and errands tomorrow. So enjoy the cool weather if you have it. We’ve been having our Santa Ana weather with temps in the 90s for the last few days. Its supposed to be 93! today. Alice you were turning on the heat, we had to put the A/C on yesterday.

If it makes you feel any better, when the cats were little, Stripes once got shut in the freezer. I heard a thumping noise and thought he was in the pantry cabinet next to the fridge (which he could get out of by himself) but he wasn’t, so I opened the freezer door and he came tumbling down from the third shelf. Another time we couldn’t find him anywhere for a couple hours, thought he had gotten out, then finally I opened a closet where my parents keep extra blankets and stuff, and he was just chilling on some pillows on the floor.

Sorry about hubby’s job. Hope they can find something else for him.

      • AJ October 7, 2023 / 10:35 am

I’ve lost track of cats all the time – rooms, closets, cabinets, furniture – but never a dog. And he didn’t even bark or scratch at the door. Was just patiently waiting by the door. Tail wagging. Thor is the chillest dog I’ve ever had.

      • Dubravkamcvmd October 7, 2023 / 1:20 pm

Sorry about the job loss. I hope this doesn’t turn out to be too disruptive

    • Duckie 🐥 October 7, 2023 / 4:06 pm

      AJ, whereabouts do you live?

      • AJ October 8, 2023 / 4:01 pm

Just saw this. I’m in Southern California. I’m still working on making it up to your part of the world which if I remember right is in British Columbia near Vancouver.

  6. tara October 7, 2023 / 10:44 am

Good Morning All! Thank you for the kind words about my Jacques. He is the epitome of “Cats have staff” and I love him dearly for it. AJ, it’s not especally hot here, but it is sticky as all get out in the Philly region. I’d love some of that Santa Ana action for a day or two – because DRY 😊. Alice, your watch sounded beautiful. Have fun shopping for a new one. Hope you are okay too! – crashing into a wall in the dark?
I dyed my hair blue a few weeks ago, a silvery-periwinkle, that I really liked. The dye was not very strong and has faded, so today’s project is to shop for something more permanent and spruce the color back up. I will be close to a very well stocked JoAnn’s Fabric as well, so I might wander around in there too.

Jacques is a very handsome gentleman and deserves not to be disturbed at least that’s what my own 17 year old cat thinks.

Our summer weather is ending, yesterday I was in short and sandals and today the temperature is down to 15C/61F with rain for the all of nest week. Time to put away the summer clothes until next year.

  8. Duckie 🐥 October 7, 2023 / 12:22 pm

Happy Saturday! Happy long weekend for Canadians!
Jacques, you are a very dashing cat, and deserve all the bed space that is there.
Speaking of beds and weather, we have an absolutely perfect combination of both here. Warm days and almost cold nights, making flannel sheets welcome. Deep blue skies and leaves changing colour is breathtaking. The morning air is almost intoxicating.
It’s coconut oil day for Duckie, which means I try to apply it to her feet and she tries to remove my hand from my arm. It’s good for her tummy, but I haven’t been able to convince her of that yet.
No family gatherings on my side this weekend, but hubby’s SIL wants us over tomorrow. I’m going to do a turkey today, which will be cut up and put in the freezer for lunches, and then one on Monday, for Thanksgiving dinner. Hubby’s coworkers get grumpy when he pulls a turkey thigh or drumstick out of his lunch on a random day, and ask him what he did to deserve it.
Off to enjoy a mildly busy, yet absolutely gorgeous, day.
    Have a great weekend, everyone.

Jacques has the right idea and is too pretty to move. I get the same look from my 16-year-old Sevi.

We had our first frost advisory last night, so I’m off to run errands in long pants instead of shorts. Then I’m rearranging some furniture, making stuff, and trying a Happy Hoodie on Lav so I can trim her claws. She’s on my lap right now, latched on to my sweatshirt so I don’t leave. Clearly her cuddles are more important than groceries! When I look at her beautiful face, it’s hard to disagree.

    • 6rabbits October 7, 2023 / 3:02 pm

Good glory! HOW long did it take put together?! And I love the flexible base it’s on. High fives!👍🏼

      • AJ October 7, 2023 / 3:51 pm

This was done a few hours a day over several weeks. All total probably about 24-30 hours. Building the walls and roof wasn’t too bad. It was all the little inside details that took forever because of all the itsy bitsy pieces. I mean there’s skeletons, and cages, a bed, a cauldron and on and on.

        • 6rabbits October 7, 2023 / 4:17 pm

That is exactly why I asked! I saw those little pieces. My nephews were LEGO freaks when they were younger and they did huge villages of stuff like this.

    • Dubravkamcvmd October 7, 2023 / 3:15 pm

Wow! I had no idea Legos became a thing for adults! Impressive imagination!

    • DEBG October 7, 2023 / 3:23 pm

That is so cool! My cats would love to play with it. I mean “play”.

    • Georgiana October 7, 2023 / 6:45 pm

      WOW! That’s incredible!

Greetings to the handsome Jacques, who has the right idea about bed-making.

    Welcome to Pretzel!
