For today’s Caturday open thread, reader Tara O. is back with a follow-up on the mysterious Universal Cat Distribution System:
Since my email from December 8th, explaining my first delivery from the UCS, the grey kitty has returned. I’ve been calling him Smokey, and this past weekend he has finally decided he can trust me. This is the best photo I could take of him because he moves so much. In addition to the fabulous toe beans, please note the lovely ear tufties.
So glad he came back! He is beautiful! How many cats do you now have?

Update: This is the kitty I took to the PSPCA on Jan.21st. They called (on a Sunday morning!) and said they had room and could I bring him in. I said “yes!” I’m so relieved I could take him somewhere because – 6Rabbits – I have 3Cats and that’s all I need. 😆 Plus those three were not having it. I’m sure he’ll be fine, but it was lonely coming home to the empty porch. I definitely miss him. He is extremely sweet and just wants a buddy to love.

Happy Caturday, everyone! Been sick all week (covid test was negative; just a cold). Okay, so maybe not so happy. Sore throat went away by Tuesday but the cough is lingering. It was month-end close week so couldn’t not work and our VPN is down so couldn’t work from home. My boss had jury duty but thankfully wasn’t actually made to go (so far; he could still have to go next week but that’s not as big a deal), so that’s good because otherwise I might have had to shift my schedule so he could approve stuff later in the day. I already had to go into the office on Sunday because of the VPN thing. Hopefully they get it sorted out before next month (although to be honest it was kind of nice; no traffic and only one other person up in the office, which was the guy covering the help desk and we don’t sit near each other).
Anyway, I survived the week and I went to bed at 8:45 last night.
And now some life advice. I’m with the Great Dane this weekend.

Facebook and youtube have been feeding me his stuff lately. He’s pretty funny. One of his recurring bits is him as an angel (and God, and Lucifer…) creating all the various dog breeds.
Of course Lucifer made the Chihuahua…

Smokey is so handsome, love the contrast of his dark fur with his gold eyes. Sorry you couldn’t keep him but I think he’ll have no trouble finding a family. Sorry you’ve been sick Allein, and it’s really no fun when you absolutely have to go to work. Been cold and dreary here, have a little sunshine right now but the rain will be back tomorrow. And the boiler at my office building has gone kaput so pretty much no heat in the building. No timeline yet on when it will be fixed/replaced. Thank goodness for space heaters! And that we’re in SoCal where it really doesn’t get much below 50 degrees. Nothing too much planned for the weekend. Probably take puppers to the park today before it rains, and library run, and errands. Stay warm and dry everyone!
Smokey looks intellectual yet approachable. I can imagine him helping with homework or correcting your grammar.
Some good news at the Shortcakery: my new sofa will be delivered on 15th February, the eye surgery I expected to be scheduled for summer at the earliest will take place on 22nd February, and I’ve finally got some fairly minor jobs around the house finished (including fitting a bath side-panel that’s been parked in the hallway for so long I literally didn’t notice it any more). I’ve also booked some tickets for shows at local theatres: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, The School For Scandal, Oh! What a Lovely War, ballet versions of Romeo and Juliet and Beauty and the Beast, and Stravinsky’s opera The Rake’s Progress.
Finally, did you know there’s a YouTube channel devoted entirely to cats going “ekekek”?
I did not know this channel existed but I’m glad I do now.
So what does this sound mean? My bun is on the bed with me and actually turned and was alert at some of these sounds!
This is exactly what I needed today! Couldn’t sip from my diet coke because I would have choked. I laughed so hard, my tummy hurts.

THIS IS FABULOUS! I didn’t realize they all did it. I thought I was just very lucky to witness such an extraordinary thing happening on a few occasions.
I never heard my cats making these sounds. They may have lacked scope; the area in front of the window they could see out of most easily did not get much (if any) in the way of bird visitors.
M&M were also useless as mousers. Mazzilli would play with a mouse but had no interest in killing or eating it (just as well, but I used to worry the mouse would die of fright). Mookie just went to sleep. Anyway, no ekekeks in my personal experience.
Smokey is very beautiful, I’m glad he’s going to have a chance of a better life thanks to TARA’s kind hearted actions.
Today is my husband 70th birthday and that number just doesn’t compute in my head or his for that matter. It seems like only yesterday that at a party this 21 year old guy asked an 18 year old girl if she was busy next Friday and if she wanted he could pick her up and they could go somewhere and talk. Where did the time go?
OK got to get moving and get the chores done because we’re going out to celebrate tonight.

Happy Caturday, everyone! We’re crossing our paws for the beautiful Smokey, hoping he finds a great home with people like Tara. I love reading everybody’s good news too.
I took the day off yesterday to work on a gift for bio dad: a wrap woven from my handspun yarn. I just have to weave in the ends, give it a good steam press, and photograph! It turned out really well, and now I have data for improving the next one (for myself).
It’s a chilly, rainy day here. I’ll turn on the fireplace while I do chores and play with yarn–and will save the errands for tomorrow. Lav is super-cuddly because I went into the office THREE WHOLE DAYS and she couldn’t sit on my lap.
