Gentle readers, it pains me to begin today’s open thread with such heartbreaking news, but reader Tracy R. has just informed me that her beloved cat has been (chokes back tears) mildly inconvenienced:
So the tree people came today and the lawn people came today and the loud-recycling-truck people came today, all of which means Hamster did not get his usual sixteen hours of nappage in, so here’s Hamster being exhausted.
Tracy R. also shared this photo, which I’m sharing in the comments to avoid drive-by trolls: “Hamster got online and ordered this. He’s a very politically active kitty.”
Good for Hamster! I’m wearing a We Won’t Go Back tee today!
Sensible cat!👍🏼
Happy Birthday, Debg!
Thanks for remembering! I’m 59 today, for the first time!
Happy birthday!!
May you have many happy 59th birthdays!
Happy 59th birthday!!
Im guessing not the last time you’ll turn 59!
Congrats!
Happy, happy Birthday! 🎁🎂🥂🛍️🎉
👍🏼Only a year younger than me!
Ems, we haven’t heard from you lately–how are things? How are all the kitties? How’s work?
The horror! A cat being inconvenienced??? When will this madness end?! I just love his pose, I laughed out loud when I saw it. Totally shows the meaning of exhausted. And yeah for him politically active, we need everybody being that way this year.
The heat has finally broke! Thank goodness, it had gotten so hot that mid 60s/low 70s now feels too cool. Like I need a sweater cool. Guess I have to reset my internal temperature gauge. With it being cooler, I can actually run errands and get some craft supplies plus check out the thrift shop. Since I have officially decided my brown thumb has sent way too many plants to that compost pile in the sky, I’m just going to do seasonal fake plant/flower arrangements. I have the plants, I just need some fake moss and pebbles to hold them in the pots.
The other big news is I’m on the schedule to get the ceiling fixed starting in about another week or so. Add in another week for the actual work and by October, my house should be back to normal. Plus Thor seems pretty much back to normal, his hacking/coughing is down to maybe once every few days. Time to pop champagne and throw confetti for both events! I’m still waiting on the results of the biopsy but my personal opinion is that he somehow had a small abscess that was pressing on his trachea and when they did the needle aspiration, the vet pulled out all the fluid. No fluid, no pressure. Just fingers crossed for good news from the vet and it doesn’t come back.
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
Fantastic news on all fronts. Give Thor a big kiss from me.
So glad to hear all of your good news! Give Thor scritches for me!
Oh, poor Hamster. What a hard day! I do like his taste in lawn signs, though.
Glad Thor seems to be doing better.
The
hipposdogs were good again!Moo Deng got an honorable mention (and it means bouncy pig?!?!)
#1 is the goodest girl.
I love the dog/mop LOL!!
Loved the mopping dog combo video. Sounds like a new superhero. Mop Dog is here to rescue your floors from the evil empire of grime! Plus the skateboarding bulldog, with his spinning walk down the stairs. So much more coordinated than me, lol.
So much wonderfulness this week! Mop dog has me in tears of laughter. This should be a thing–buy a suit, clean your floor, and make your dog happy.
I met 4 beautiful huskies on my walk last night, and they were eager for petpets. Also saw 36 bunnies.
Yay for bunnies! That’s a lot!
Wow! Odens circles are fantastic! The mop suit is a grand idea! That baby hippo is too too much! So much attitude in one so young!
I come on this site for fun and happy pictures. I don’t need to see horrors like that depicted in this pic.
😂😂😂🤣🤪
I feel you.
Poor Hamster my heart brakes to see how abused by life you are. (😂)
Last week was nice but with temperature going up to into the middle 30C/90F with the high humidity we had to turn the air conditioning back on yesterday and it’s supposed to be like that for next week too. It’s nice and cool at night and in the morning but by afternoon it’s just too hot but I shouldn’t complain it will be cool enough too enough.
Minnie is not any better but she’s not any worse, I’m beginning to think she’ll make it to her 18th birthday! (knock on wood)
Hope everyone has a good weekend.
Weather here is doing the same thing. I go through a daily ritual of closing windows in the afternoon, turning on the AC, and then reversing the process after sunset.
Hugs to Minnie.
Ditto with the weather! Have to close up and turn on air in afternoon, but it’s down to low 60s at night.
Knocking on much wood for Minnie👍🏼
Poor Hamster, I’m with you.
Still trying to get back to functional, but slowly improving.
I discovered the hard way that I cannot leave homemade muffins lying around where Duckie can see them. I was having one with tea, and I heard a strange sound. I turned to see Duckie stamping down the outside of her cage towards the muffin. I held a small piece out to her, just out of curiosity, and she aggressively removed it from my fingers (thankfully, she left the fingers behind) and literally wolfed it down. Her reaction to it was worse than for Graham crackers. She will fight to get muffin. So now I must be careful. I control the ingredients, and small amounts won’t hurt her, but she doesn’t understand the concept of “just a little bit”. I’m seriously tempted to let her have an entire muffin, and record what she does.
Have a good weekend, everyone.
I have a similar reaction to muffins, so I can’t judge.
Muffins close to me would also be a mistake. Especially with blueberries💋
It’s tough being a cat. Especially such a beautiful cat with such an important beauty regimen.
I’m off to a late start because weird dreams caused me to oversleep. Errands today include dropping off “please vote” postcards and picking up more to write; groceries; etc. Then I can curl up with kitties and yarn and audiobooks–my idea of the perfect birthday!
Hugs to you all.
Happy Birthday, DebG!
Belated birthday wishes!
I’m still recovering from a strenuous morning spent chopping down four fairly large bushes in the Shortcakery garden. Although I managed to uproot one of them (after a ferocious struggle) I’ll have to pay someone to finish the job with the other three.
My local theatre announced its winter season a few days ago and I’ve already booked tickets for Bellini’s “I Capuleti e i Montecchi” – a non-Shakespearian version of the Romeo and Juliet story – a programme of Shakespeare songs, and a reworking of Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest”. The latter sounds completely bonkers but it’s directed by Emma Rice, who successfully adapted the English stiff upper lip classic “Brief Encounter” and several novels by Angela Carter for the stage.
Finally, I’m looking forward to Monday when I begin my final holiday of the year, four nights in Haworth. This time I hope to visit Cliffe Castle Museum in nearby Keighley, whose exhibits include hand looms used by members of my family in the mid-to-late 19th century!
Oooh oooh pictures please! I love to see old looms!
Rest up after your yard ordeal–gardening can be exhausting and painful.
Hear you about the bushes!
Happy birthday, Deb G.! Hello Cutetropolitans!
We’ve had the most dramatic weather change this week. Wednesday I met a friend at a Ukrainian restaurant and we ate warenyky outside in 75-degree weather. Less than 12 hours later it was 47 degrees and raining. And it has been rainy, windy (30-60 mph) and cold ever since. My cousin visited from the States and we spent two days in this miserable weather trying to make the most of Vienna. And the worst is yet to come: tomorrow and Monday heavier rain, stronger winds, flood warnings and in the mountains they are expecting up to a meter (33 inches) of snow. And this in September!!! Like Hamster, Mutz (rhymes with “puts”) is inconvenienced by all this weather. He just came in from outside, dripping wet, but he will probably venture out again before we go to bed. Cats…
Please keep Hamster inside, things are getting dangerous out there.

HA!
The Kiffness actually did a new song about this moment from the debate.
lol…I went to search on youtube after I saw this comment in my email, and it was the first video in the second row on the homepage. Streaming proceeds are going to the Clark County SPCA (Springfield is the county seat).
OMG, the dog’s expression at the end.
That is why I didn’t watch the debates, hearing about it second hand was scary enough.
99 times out of 100 they wouldn’t make me change my vote anyway.
I do vote like stoat though, who I vote for is my business.
I honestly didn’t expect to make it more than a few minutes (I started listening to the NPR Politics Podcast back in 2016 for their debate recaps, because I just couldn’t watch them), but I actually watched the whole thing. I think Harris’s facial expressions kept me going.
A youtuber I watch did a pre-debate live stream thing; he wasn’t able to actually show the debate (he posted a link to C-SPAN instead) but he left the stream going with a ‘be right back’ graphic (even though he never came back) so people could continue in the live chat, but I gave up on trying to follow it because it moves too fast.
I saw an audio-only version and the visuals make it even better.
