Weekend Open Thread

Happy Caturday! It’s a great day for outdoor activities, so here are some kittens out mountain climbing. Oh, by the way, you’re the mountain.

Two kittens photographed from above climbing up a pant leg. A third kitten sits on the floor in the background.
We’ll be using your lap as base camp.

Well hello little kittens, if you want a real challenge I make a very big soft mountain you’re very welcome to climb me!

I don’t have time for a long post I’m going out to a “cousins breakfast” with my husband’s family and he has a LOT of cousins LOL!

Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

  2. Ricky & Bibi's Mom June 14, 2025 / 9:30 am

Outdoor activity today: participating in a No Kings event locally. Wish me luck, kittens; it may be an uphill climb.

    • Georgiana June 14, 2025 / 11:27 am

Good for you but be safe.

      • Dana June 14, 2025 / 12:04 pm

        Ditto.

      Stay safe, please.

    Good Morning Everyone!
It was a super busy week at work installing an exhibit. I’m glad that’s over for the next few months. In between all of that I had to organize a watch team to keep an eye on a construction project. We got compact storage installed which will give us 1000 more linear feet of storage. That’s a lot of books! And I also had to take Jacques to the vet on Monday. He has something wrong with one of his “thumb” claws. It’s not retracting, is swollen and looks funny. Plus he barely caught it on my shirt and yelped in pain. The vet is baffled. Since Jacques is 19 we are proceeding with caution. He’s getting antibiotics everyday to see what happens. It’s still swollen, but doesn’t seem to be as painful. It didn’t stop Jacques from stealing some of my pine nuts and getting into my eggs Benedict for the hollandaise sauce. He has boogie taste.

I’m off shortly to make some good trouble in Philadelphia. It’s supposed to rain – but that’s not stopping me from going.

    • Alice Shortcake June 14, 2025 / 10:12 am

Good luck with Jacques and the Philly troublemaking! I have a family connection to the city – my 3xgreat-grandparents emigrated there in the 1880s and are buried in Laurel Hill Cemetary.

I had a comical/frustrating experience on Thursday. A couple of weeks ago Shortcakery Road was looking a bit slummy due to the grass and weeds growing between the house front walls and the pavement (the front doors open directly onto the street) so I pulled it all up and filled a huge bag with the offending vegetation. In no time at all a lot of new growth had sprouted, so I decided to use weedkiller. Imagine my dismay upon finishing the work, reading the label on the spray bottle, AND REALIZING THAT I’D USED BUG REPELLENT. Of course I had to do the job again properly, after which my back was killing me, but at least the street is no longer in imminent danger of ending up like a lost city in South America.

      • DEBG June 14, 2025 / 12:43 pm

At least those weeds won’t have bugs on them!

        • Alice Shortcake June 14, 2025 / 1:23 pm

          That is an excellent point!

      • 6Rabbits June 14, 2025 / 3:27 pm

I feel for you. I have a triangle area in front of my house that no matter what I do or plant, grows the weirdest weeds Iโ€™ve ever seen! Everyone elseโ€™s looks so nice and mine is the pits๐Ÿคจ

      • Tara June 14, 2025 / 3:55 pm

Oh brother! sorry for your weed saga! If you are able to manage it, the best way to get rid of weeds is with boiling water. Really. It takes a few days, but then they die for the season.

    • Ricky & Bibi's Mom June 14, 2025 / 11:33 am

Amen to good trouble. Raining here in NYC, too. Wishing you well!

      • Tara June 14, 2025 / 3:56 pm

Hope you had a good rally! It was spitting here mostly, no down pour. I hope yours was fairly dry too!

    • DEBG June 14, 2025 / 12:31 pm

I’m glad–though you’re probably not!–that Jacques had the energy for food stealing. Hope he heals quickly, poor baby.

      • Tara June 14, 2025 / 3:57 pm

Haha! I actually love it. And believe it or not, he has plenty of energy. Especially when it comes to food. He’s named for Jacques Pepin, and Jacques Torres – both chefs, because he has always been a boogie foodie. A few weeks ago I was eating a samosa, he was very curious so – even knowing better! – I offered him what I thought would be a sniff. Nope. He tried to chomp down and grab the whole thing from me.

  4. AJ June 14, 2025 / 9:52 am

Squee! What a lovely way to wake up. And being about 5’8″, I make a wonderfully tall and challenging mountain to clamber all over.

Good luck Ricky & Bibi’s Mom and anyone else going to the marches today. I’m still debating about going but being in SoCal, I’m concerned about things getting out of hand. Also at around the same time, I have an art group meetup so I may swing by afterward and see how it’s going.

On tap tomorrow is the semi-annual pottery show put on by our local potter’s association. So many wonderful artists and beautiful pieces. I want to buy everything but I’ll probably restrain myself to one bowl. I’m on the lookout for a small bowl to eat my morning yogurt from. Other than that, just the usual – library, grocery shopping, and some house/yard chores. Also working on a new painting, and me and hubby are building a fun Lego piece. It’s a working toy vending machine. It looks like the old fashioned red machines that spat out a plastic ball with a toy inside.

    https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/minifigure-vending-machine-21358

We’re planning on displaying at an upcoming event and have the kids put the “coin” in and get a toy. We’re keeping the exclusive mini figures that came with the model and buying some basic figures to put in the balls. Should be fun for everyone. Enjoy the weekend everyone!

    • 6Rabbits June 14, 2025 / 3:32 pm

That vending machine is very cute!

    • Tara June 14, 2025 / 3:59 pm

Wow! I love the vending machine!

Happy Caturday! Those little faces can come climb into my lap. I was off yesterday, my brother gets home from a trip today,ย tomorrow is Father’s Day, and then my parents leave on Monday for my dad’s Navy reunion in Newport, RI. Had a hard time getting out of bed this morning. My 6:00 alarm (which I often turn off on weekends but didn’t last night) went off again and again and again and when I finally looked at the clock it was 9:00. I didn’t get up for another hour. I feel like I should go find the nearest protest (there’s one near where I work, which is about half an hour away without traffic), but I will be honest, the idea of going (alone) to join a crowd of strangers is more than my anxiety can handle these days (listening to yesterday’s Consider This podcast about Israel/Iran isn’t helping). But it makes me feel a bit guilty. Looks like rain starting possibly around 11am all through the afternoon (but the high temp is only 66ยฐF). Going to do my best to get all the salad veggies I bought the other day cut up and clean out my fridge. And hang up the clothes piled in baskets in my bedroom. Maybe some laundry.

The dogs were good again. I think wearing your most dapper suit to go adopt a furry new family member should become a thing.

A few familiar faces this week, including Floyd the mail-route dog, Whiskey the mud bather, and Ed ๐Ÿฆ“.

    • Ricky & Bibi's Mom June 14, 2025 / 11:56 am

Allein, I understand your fear in crowds. I have it myself. Today I’m pretending I’m not scared, because I would feel even more helpless if I didn’t go. Still, nobody is more surprised than I am myself for doing this!

You’ll do what you can when you can. Here’s something I never thought of; one of my friends made a financial donation for portable toilets! I think that’s a creative and valuable contribution. Maybe another time (and there will be another time) you can make signs, or staff telephone lines, or something like that. Meanwhile, please be kind to yourself.

      And congratulations to your dad!

      • allein ๐Ÿพ June 14, 2025 / 11:58 am

Thank you, that helps. I’ve been thinking about what would be the best organizations to donate to. I can at least afford to do that.

      • DEBG June 14, 2025 / 12:35 pm

I’m in the same boat as Allein, so I’m going to do some at-home research for Indivisible instead. Our local group puts together candidate fact sheets for local races, so that people actually *know* something about the candidates. That’s my contribution that eases my anxiety and hopefully helps some folks.

        • allein ๐Ÿพ June 14, 2025 / 12:36 pm

        • allein ๐Ÿพ June 14, 2025 / 3:50 pm

I found a facebook post with some pictures and video of the protest near work. It was at an intersection near the post office and a shopping center on the opposite corner. They looked to have a good-sized crowd despite the steady rain, and lots of passing cars were honking their horns (I assume in support).

        • Ricky & Bibi's Mom June 14, 2025 / 5:12 pm

          That’s a really good one!

    • DEBG June 14, 2025 / 12:35 pm

I loved seeing the familar faces and stripes. (Watched it yesterday because I needed a good wholesome laugh.)

      • allein ๐Ÿพ June 14, 2025 / 12:37 pm

Ed was someone’s Can’t Let It Go on the NPR Politics Podcast yesterday (they do it every Friday; “something you can’t stop thinking about, politics or otherwise”).

        • DEBG June 14, 2025 / 12:42 pm

That’s fantastic. And I was relieved to learn from We Rate Dogs that he’s now living in a sanctuary instead of someone’s back yard.

    • allein ๐Ÿพ June 14, 2025 / 1:28 pm

The rain decided to gather itself for a couple extra hours and dump it all at once in the last several minutes, I guess.

Just noticing how dark it is in my living room (even with the blinds half open). Maybe I should turn on some lights…

    • 6Rabbits June 14, 2025 / 3:49 pm

Allein and DebG, I am in the same position. I feel that I should go, but large crowds arenโ€™t my thing, and I havenโ€™t anyone to go with. I am also unable to stand or walk for long (I do use a cane). I always make sure to give donations, but it feels like I need to goโ˜น๏ธ I like Ricky and Bibiโ€™s Momโ€™s idea of making signs or staffing telephone lines, tho!

      • Ricky & Bibi's Mom June 14, 2025 / 5:11 pm

FWIW, IME being in a group of folks all there for the same purpose was less lonely and scary than it might have been. I struck up a conversation with someone who had a particularly excellent sign, and we agreed to look out for each other. Other than having to dodge umbrella spikes, I felt quite safe! Some people were stationed along the way handing out water bottles to anyone who needed them. So that’s another way to participate.

Heck, just voting is a big one. We’ve got a primary in NYC. Early voting started today. I’ll go later this week.

        • allein ๐Ÿพ June 14, 2025 / 5:38 pm

We just had NJ governor primaries. Election day is November 4. Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill vs Republican Jack Ciattarelli (and five people I’ve never heard of from other parties). Just hoping the campaign ads will quiet down for a while.

I remember one ad basically telling me not to vote for Sherrill…but I had no idea who they actually wanted me to vote for. I assume one of the other Democrats but…๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ. Didn’t strike me as a very effective ad.

    • allein ๐Ÿพ June 14, 2025 / 5:40 pm

My brother might not get home tonight. He’s flying from Kansas City to Detroit, and that flight is late, and his Detroit to Newark was canceled. My dad doesn’t know if he’s made other arrangements or if he even knows yet.

  6. Duckie ๐Ÿฅ June 14, 2025 / 12:01 pm

    Cool and dry.
    Chest cold.
    Duckie egged.
    Have a good weekend.

  7. N. Fritz June 14, 2025 / 12:31 pm

Y’all, it’s been a rough week. School shooting here in Austria at the top of the list, but the rest of the world seems to be going to hell in a handbasket. Please, NTMTOM, keep the cute coming. We desperately need the distraction.

    • allein ๐Ÿพ June 14, 2025 / 12:35 pm

Just saw there were two state Reps (and their spouses, and apparently a dog) shot by someone presenting as a police officer (still at large) in Minnesota this morning. Former Speaker and her husband died, the other rep and his wife needed surgery and the governor said they are “cautiously optimistic” they will survive.

This world is getting very scary. Everyone be careful out there.

      • DEBG June 14, 2025 / 12:38 pm

Yes, this story has had me reeling all morning. Please, everybody, stay safe. I love this community more than I can say.

      • 6Rabbits June 14, 2025 / 4:22 pm

What the h*ll?!?! Just read about it. How horribly scary!๐Ÿ˜ฑ

        • allein ๐Ÿพ June 14, 2025 / 4:29 pm

Last I saw they’ve identified the guy but haven’t caught him.

    • DEBG June 14, 2025 / 12:37 pm

N Fritz, so sorry. We’re used to them here in the US but Austria isn’t. Sending healing purrs to you and yours.

      • allein ๐Ÿพ June 14, 2025 / 12:38 pm

“We’re used to them” is a very sad statement. But unfortunately true.

    • 6Rabbits June 14, 2025 / 3:52 pm

In Austria!! I thought school shootings were just an American thing! Sending calming thoughts๐Ÿ’™

  8. DEBG June 14, 2025 / 12:41 pm

From the angle, it looks like kitties are truly climbing up the mountain. It’s a bold move, tiny ones. But you’ve got those needle claws to hang on with. I miss being a climbing wall for littles.

No good trouble for me this weekend, at least not in public. But I’ll work on candidate fact sheets, and dye some yarn, and take care of myself. Still heartbroken for my beautiful Sevi, and the horrible news lately hasn’t helped.

    Hugs to you all.

    • Tara June 14, 2025 / 3:32 pm

Awww. On my way home I walked past some “curb alert” items, one had a sign in a bag that read, “for 2-legged or 4-legged” I peeked in the bag and it was a couple of frisbees. Wish I could fling him one.

  9. 6Rabbits June 14, 2025 / 3:23 pm

    I am a totally empty base campโ€”come on up!๐Ÿ’‹

  10. Tara June 14, 2025 / 3:53 pm

Hi y’all! I’m home from making good trouble. I just wanted to report back that it was truly a peaceful event. There are so many smart and clever people with markers and cardboard out there! My marching buddy and I were equally tickled by the inventive “sticks” we saw holding the signs aloft. They were: golf clubs, garden spikes, wooden yardsticks, wrapping paper tubes, t-squares and so many more.
I’ve read all the comments and want to thank those of you who were thinking of us goodtrouble-makers. Those who don’t want to go by themselves, I understand, but also encourage you to do so anyway. Just gentle, loving, encouragement. I often have to go alone and so I can share that you will be surrounded by like minded people and you will be a number to be counted. I also love the alternative creative ways people contribute to a cause. Good on you all!

  11. allein ๐Ÿพ June 14, 2025 / 4:08 pm

    Squeaky, squeaky.

  12. Ricky & Bibi's Mom June 14, 2025 / 5:02 pm

I’m home, safe and sound, and only mildly damp, from a peaceful, mostly joyous, well organized rally and march. Some of the signs people made were really clever. At one point during a lull in the chanting, I yelled “More cowbell!” and got a few laughs. Then back to “”Whose streets? Our streets!” and other oldies but goodies.

Glad I did it. Sore feet a small price to pay for standing up for the US Constitution.
