Weekend Open Thread

Happy Fifth of July Caturday! Now that the bombs have stopped bursting in midair, let’s go “ooh” and “ahh” at a different kind of explosion: the “fabulous fluff tail” of Griffey, from reader Candi G.

Cat with a very fluffy white tail pointing in the air.
… And the rockets’ red glare, fluffy tail in the air…

That is an impressing tail indeed!

We’ve had an addition to the family this week, my sister in law got a kitten! She lost her beloved dog a month ago and was very sad. She didn’t want another dog because she’s having problems with her knees so walking is difficult. She was thinking about getting a cat but her husband wan’t a fan so her daughter just “showed up” with this little beauty and now she’s over the moon.

Griffin! You have a mighty fine tail. Thank you for showing it off. And are you wearing booties?
I just got caught up on yesterday’s posts. I checked out yesterday and cleaned and polished the mess that is my jewelry. Boy I’ve bought a lot of junk over the years. It was nice to find some of the things I haven’t thought of in ages. Found the first pair of earrings my dad gave me for 8th grade graduation. I wasn’t allowed to pierce my ears until then. I’m so glad I still have them.
Today will be more cleaning. It’s long overdue.
I hope everyone is enjoying the nice long weekend.

    Wow, that’s quite the tail!

My aunt also has kittens…they came from under her deck. There are at least two families (some of the babies are older than the others). I don’t think I can share her pictures from her facebook page, though. Some are cow kitties and there’s at least one tiny tabby. She picked a couple up and they hissed at her.

Going to get my hair cut this afternoon. Haven’t decided yet how much…it’s currently about at the middle of my back. I might just ask how much she’d have to cut to get rid of the damaged ends (I haven’t cut it in about a year, apparently), but I usually just decide when I get there.

    Can I pet that blackbird?

(Had to google Parotid Duct Transposition: “…a surgical procedure used to treat cases of dry eye that are unresponsive to medical treatment and whose ocular discomfort is affecting their quality of life. It is performed under general anaesthesia and involves the delicate process of relocating the parotid salivary duct.” That’s crazy.)

Griffey, are you sure you’re not wearing a feather duster?? That is absolutely the most magnificent, and fluffiest tail I’ve seen outside a Main Coon. And the rest of him is just as fabulous.

Yesterday was spent cleaning and tons of laundry along with bathing the dogs. They’ve come down with a bad case of fleas, even with being on prescription flea meds. I have never had something like this happen before. And I have no idea where they came from. Only thing I can think of, is from outside. Waiting on a new script from the vet, and fingers crossed it wipes out the buggers.

On a happier note, my niece and her family are town! So we’ll go to breakfast and then everyone’s coming back to my house for a pool party and bbq. Basically having the 4th of July today, lol. Last night was bad with the fireworks in my neighborhood but thankfully they got them out of their system early and it didn’t go until the wee hours.

Then tomorrow is our Lego display at the park. The park has a group of houses that highlight different nations and they rotate each week which nation will have an open house with a display related to the country, food, etc. So tomorrow is House of Denmark’s turn and with Legos being Danish, they always invite us. Me and hubby will have our Lego gumball/treat dispensing machine for the kids to use. They’ll stick in a “coin”, a ball rolls out and they’ll get a prize. Funny thing is we asked club members if they had any mini lego figurines they didn’t want and were willing to donate, and it just snowballed with local retailers also donating. Soo, we now have about 150 mini figs and about 100 goodie bags of Lego parts to hand out to the winners. Should be a fun time tomorrow.

    Enjoy the weekend all!

I was at my parents’ and there were fireworks happening from three or four different directions. We could see three (mostly through trees, which was kinda cool). One was directly behind them, possibly on the next street over (or behind one of the houses on that street), one I believe was in a development across the highway off to the right as we were facing the back yard (I remember they did them in the cul-de-sac on the far side of the development years ago when I used to babysit for a family there), and the third was in between but further out, not sure where, exactly. The fourth sound was coming from the opposite direction of the highway (it might have just been an echo but it seemed separate from the other noise) but we couldn’t see anything that way. I am assuming they were all by hired professionals, since such fireworks would otherwise be illegal and they were way too big to go unnoticed by the cops (who put out a recorded call a few days ago reminding us of said illegality and noting that the police would be out and about over the holiday weekend). Then again, people are dumb so who knows.

The township’s fireworks were on Thursday night, but I think they might have been rained out at the last minute. I could see the festivities starting on my way home from the store, but a storm was also following behind me, and half an hour before the fireworks were supposed to start it was pouring rain with some thunder (though I only noticed lightning once). I did hear some booms but it didn’t sound like the usual show (which I can hear quite well from my house, as I live off the same road less than two miles away). The storm was really bad further north, I read that there were three deaths (I believe from trees falling on two different cars), and a lot of damage, but we mostly just got the heavy rain here. Apparently this storm was not expected in the forecast… πŸ™

Those are some serious puppy eyes.

One last emergency post (because it was just posted and y’all need to see) before I get ready to leave.

    • Georgiana July 5, 2025 / 11:55 am

Sophie is dangerously cute, that much cuteness could be fatal if you’re not ready for it.

    • DEBG July 5, 2025 / 3:24 pm

I’m reminded of that classic episode of Seinfeld, where they had to fly in special tiny instruments for surgery on a squirrel.

      Sophie is quite the cutie.

  7. Duckie πŸ₯ July 5, 2025 / 12:49 pm

    Saturday.
    Crazy. Busy.
Duckie moult almost over. I honestly thought I might have to put her down, she was so sick. But she is coming back, so…
Waiting for too many events to take place. Not patient.
    Have a good weekend, everyone.

    • DEBG July 5, 2025 / 3:30 pm

Poor lil Duckie. Give her gentle petpets from me.

    • Tara July 5, 2025 / 3:42 pm

wait, what? Have you shared about little Duckie and I missed it? I’m sorry – I’m glad it looks like things are improving.

  8. DEBG July 5, 2025 / 3:31 pm

Griffey, I bet the rest of you is just as fabulous as that tail!

I’m late today–breakfast with some friends, then errands, and then a dye session. Just trying to keep it together. Hugs to you all.

  9. Duckie πŸ₯ July 5, 2025 / 3:42 pm

Mike, any chance kittens-with-mittens, and floofy tail, could be tags?

  10. Tara July 5, 2025 / 3:43 pm

❀️ Hugs to you DebG ❀️

    • DEBG July 5, 2025 / 4:58 pm

Thank you–I need all the hugs I can get!

How are your Latvian mittens coming along?

  11. Alice Shortcake July 5, 2025 / 5:49 pm

The heatwave in my part of Britain came to an end with some heavy rain last night. Unfortunately a host of starving slugs and snails have emerged from their hiding places to enjoy the salad bar, and this morning I found two slimy little lumberjacks apparently co-operating on cutting down a hollyhock. I escorted the miscreants off the premises and examined every other plant for signs of damage, but everything else seems to be flourishing.

Also flourishing is the new house under construction at the end of Shortcake Street. It’s odd to think that the last structures on that site were the outbuildings of a windmill still grinding corn in the 1890s!
