Weekend Open Thread

Let’s start our Caturday by wishing a happy birthday to Storm, who turned four years old yesterday, says reader Georgiana Y.

Black cat lounges on a sofa and looks up at you.
You can put my presents in my supper dish.

Not to be upstaged, Storm’s sister Skye got into some mischief:

I had just come in from hanging out clothes and I left the empty basket on the kitchen stools to get a drink of water and when I turned back Skye had claimed the basket as her own. I guess it’s Skye’s basket now!

A gray and white cat sits inside a white plastic laundry basket, looking quite pleased with herself.
Why do you keep putting laundry in my fortress?
You already voted!

Good morning from Skye and Storm who are at the moment sitting in front of the patio screen door watching the birds and the squirrels in the back yard.

After a week of abnormally high temperatures and humidity we had violent rain and thunder storms on Thursday and I was finally able to turn off the AC and open all the windows and yesterday was the perfect summer day.

For some not so happy news, I saw my doctor this week and she confirmed that my blood pressure is too high and precribed a new medication. I was already taking something that while not for high blood pressure had the side effect of lowering it but it’s simply not enough anymore. Another pill to take (sigh).

In happier news I have some chores to do this morning and then we are meeting our group of friends tonight at a nice restaurant in the city for some yummy prime rib with garlic mashed potatoes!

I hope everyone is safe and healthy and has a good weekend!

Oh dear on the blood pressure medicine. I hope the new medication works well. Have a wonderful dinner with garlic mashed potatoes!

I hear you. But better to be proactive, you don’t want to have a stroke.

      They’re not fun, believe me.

Happy Birthday Storm! And Skye, always lovely to see you. ❤️ I didn’t realize that Storm is just like my Jacques, all black with a little white star on her chest.

I am procrastinating on getting ready to travel to California early tomorrow morning. I’m Daddy-sitting for a week and then up to the Sierras for some R&R by myself. Lots of anxiety because of family nonsense, trying to remind myself of the good things: My dad, my niece and nephew, and my R&R in the mountains.

If anyone is interested in my mitten drama, you can see the miss matched sizes here:
    https://www.ravelry.com/projects/taralein/graph-3—district-of-vecgulbene
I’m usually very good at making things (socks and mittens) the same size, but this time ???
One I knitted during a very stressful semester and the other one after the semester. I still haven’t decided which one to frog.

This reminds me – DebG can you post the link to your youtube again? I meant to book mark it so I could check in, but I forgot.

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend planned!

My youtube channel is @debgerish. You’re welcome to subscribe too. I post videos most weekends, switching between projects based on what I’m doing.

Regarding your mittens, it’s still hard to believe stress made your hands tighten/loosen that much. I think you accidentally switched needle sizes or pattern sizes. I’ve done that too!

And don’t get me started on knitting with handspun! Early in my spinning life, I wanted to make a pair of socks with my handspun. Spun enough for the first sock and was so excited, I went ahead and knitted it. Then I spun and knitted the second sock–my second yarn was so much fatter, that sock turned out waaayyyyy too big. They hang on my wall instead of being worn on my feet.

Well, I was gonna do some laundry…I guess I can just carry the pile in my arms.

    Happy Birthday, Storm!

I just got an email informing me that the 2026 We Rate Dogs calendars are out. One the one hand, yay! On the other, it’s only July. On the third…how are we almost done with July already?

I’m gonna need, like, an hour-long loop of Kuzco.

I met Mako the towel-stealer yesterday and laughed all over again.

Amazing that people now have the SON of their previous dog! I mean, how…?

Happy birthday Storm! Skye, you remain as mischievous as ever. Such lovely girls.

I’m headed out in a little bit for a walk with my dear friend who lost her cat last week. She’s bringing her young golden, just over a year old–it will be my first time meeting Rosie! We’re hoping to tire her out so that when we come back to my condo, Rosie doesn’t trash anything.

Like Allein, I struggle to believe we’re halfway through July. In just a few weeks, my company should change hands. And then we’ve got our big party at the beginning of October, which feels like it’s right around the corner. If you’ll be in Boulder on October 4, plan to come to the Schacht party. You can RSVP on our website.

Hugs to you all. I know some of us had a rough week, so the cats send their healing purrs.

You’re having a birthday party for me? How sweet! 😜

  5. allein 🐾 July 19, 2025 / 10:06 am

I was having a bad day on Thursday but this absolutely cracked me up.

    • Georgiana July 19, 2025 / 10:39 am

Don’t they usually come in pairs 😂

      • DEBG July 19, 2025 / 11:42 am

I’m sure somebody will come along to fill the other cup!

    • 6Rabbits July 19, 2025 / 1:25 pm

      A little weird…but cute!

    Happy birthday, Storm.
Skye, you can come sit in my laundry basket anytime you want.
Mini heat wave is over, and I’m relaxing under grey clouds and a breeze. Temperatures will go up to seasonal normal only next week; I’m tempted to put the AC away, but that will just bring the heat back.
I apologize to all those who are in disbelief at how fast July seems to be going by, but I can’t wait for fall. I’m already counting down the days until the sun sets at 8pm here.
Little Duckie is doing SOOOOO much better now that the moult is over. She’s back to her tiny blue sassy self.
This coming week is going to be fraught with waiting, for me. Decision on government benefits for me, hubby’s job situation (possible transfer), idiot BILs learning some facts of life, hubby off on a hike, dad deciding whether he wants to stay on anti-seizure meds or briefly get his old life back.
I’m off to play in a fabric store. Have a great weekend, everyone.

PS Duckie is afraid of blueberries.

      • allein 🐾 July 19, 2025 / 12:44 pm

        Me, too…

        • Duckie 🐥 July 19, 2025 / 12:46 pm

          ….why

          • allein 🐾 July 19, 2025 / 2:05 pm

A while back my brain decided (with zero evidence, I might add) that something I eat might kill me, so I’m afraid to eat a lot of things. I’m working on it.

I did have blueberry yogurt twice this week. I almost bought some jumbo blueberries yesterday but I didn’t (partly because I also bought plums and have some other stuff I need to use up). Maybe next week.

            • Duckie 🐥 July 19, 2025 / 3:36 pm

              Oh dear!

      • 6Rabbits July 19, 2025 / 1:26 pm

I volunteer to eat all her blueberries for her!

        • Duckie 🐥 July 19, 2025 / 3:37 pm

You will have to fight me for them.

          • 6Rabbits July 19, 2025 / 10:09 pm

            Blueberry lovers unite!🤩🫐

    Happy Birthday, Storm!

I’m a few hours south of Duckie, and also enjoying the break in the weather (and happy that even when it’s hot, we don’t have the 100+ degree temps that a lot of the country gets).

Last week, Julius spent his first night outside since we got him…but not on purpose. We always make sure he’s in the house a couple hours before sunset, and don’t let him out until a couple hours after sunrise, but somehow the little stinker snuck out. I had no idea until I came down the next morning to find out what was setting off the wireless doorbell at the back door and discovered it was him! Luckily he was fine, just very hungry.

    • DEBG July 19, 2025 / 12:41 pm

He knew enough to ring the bell! That’s a smart kitty.

  8. 6Rabbits July 19, 2025 / 1:29 pm

Happy Birthday, Storm! No treats, just best wishes!
Skyes’s laundry basket fortress is impressive. She can even spy on people, or critters, on the outside. Just needs a blanket roof!
