Weekend Open Thread

Yay, it’s Caturday! Today’s visitor is Jacques, displaying typical cat behavior and giving reader Tara O. the chance to make the best joke ever:

Attached is Jacques-in-a-box. I was cleaning up my jewelry and ran out of places to put boxes. Once they were on the bed they were fair game.

Cat sits among an array of small jewelry boxes spread out on the bed. The cat is trying to put its paws in one of the boxes.
I can fit, I swear!

And Jacques would also like to remind everyone to stay hydrated in the heat. Especially if mommy’s bedside water is available. Much better than cat bowl water.

Jacques is a thirsty boy, you can’t expect him to walk all the way to his water bowl when this glass is right there! You do you Jacques!

It’s going to be a quiet weekend because I’ve had a cough and sore throat since Wednesday and since it gets worst at night I haven’t slept much for 3 nights now.
I’ve tried all of the home remedies + cough syrup and lozenges but it’s a very temporary relief and of course my doctor isn’t available and it’s impossible to get an appointment at another clinic!

Well I hope you guys have a better weekend than me.

    • 6Rabbits July 26, 2025 / 9:34 am

Feel better! I hate sore throats!

    • Tara July 26, 2025 / 10:44 am

Oh dear, sorry to hear you are under the weather. My go-to is something very garlicky, or chicken soup. Hard to think of soup in the summer heat. I hope you feel better soon.

    • DEBG July 26, 2025 / 1:35 pm

Hope you can get to a doctor soon. Does ice cream help?

Jacques understands that water bowls are for peasants and canines. Not the noble feline who deserves fine crystal goblets and European porcelain.

Tara, I used to babysit my friends cat, Pouncer, who tended to be a jerk, when she went away for several days.
I always carried a water glass around with me. Well, Pouncer, who wasn’t drinking much out of his dish from home, decided he’d sneak around and drink from my glass while I was occupied. Little jerk! Turned around and caught him at it, too. Thusly, I learned to drink from a capped bottle! This was over 20 years ago and I STILL drink from a capped bottle!😁
    I sympathize!

And btw, what are all those tarnished things in the box on the left?

    • Tara July 26, 2025 / 10:47 am

Pouncer! What’s in a name, eh?
Those tarnished things are the remnants of a necklace. They are… hard to describe. Kind of cup or bell shaped, and they were strung on an elastic. It was kind of like a chocker. The elastic said good night a long time ago and the bells are so tarnished I don’t know what to do with them. So for now, there they are.

Ok, trying this reply a second time… the Amazon links I put in the first one made it try to do something “helpful” with previews that didn’t work at all. ::rolls eyes::

Anyway–it’s hard to tell from the photo exactly what metal the necklace pieces are made of, but possibly something like this would help to clean them off easily? I’m not a big jewelry-wearer so I’ve never used one myself (and thus can’t speak to the actual effectiveness) but for small, fiddly bits it might be less of a headache than a spray-type tarnish remover. Just remember that you’ll need to buy a pack of the activator crystals to go along with it, they’re linked down underneath the main item listing.

        https://www.rkmnushine.com/products/nushine-magic-cleaning-plate?variant=46056158167358

Brass seems to be problematic with that type of cleaner; sterling silver and gold are fine, but some types of brass alloys don’t hold up to the chemical reaction used by the cleaner. If that’s what the necklace is made from, a brass-specific cleaner like this might be a better bet:

        https://autoforge.net/products/flitz-instant-brass-copper-tarnish-remover?variant=42355798835378&msclkid=99c7b0a7c17c11840f8bd822df764c59

(Edit to add, yay, those links work! Also, Jacques is a very handsome boy–I love cats but am deathly allergic to them, so I have to content myself with loving on other people’s pets via photos on the interwebs. Give him a skritch for me!)

        • Tara July 26, 2025 / 7:44 pm

Thanks for these suggestions Waterdragon! I like the look of the Flitz spray. I’ll look into this a bit more when I get home.

  4. AJ July 26, 2025 / 10:02 am

I always love a void. Jacques, you have exquisite taste and a refined palate. Of course water from anywhere else, but especially your glass, tastes better than anything from that, sniff, so called water bowl.

It’s been an interesting week at chez AJ. Both doggos were at vet. My little old man Thor had to have an ultrasound to see why he has such a big belly. The vet thinks he’s a few years older than they said, so I’m guessing he’s closer to 13 than 12 and that means he’s has some kidney disease. So time for a lower protein kidney friendly diet. And then because he was somewhat spicy they had to sedate him and I think that upset his tummy because he’s been having a bout of diarrhea. Poor boy. Then Valkyrie did something to her eye and off we went to the walk in vet clinic. She has a corneal ulcer and is on eye meds for a week. Shes supposed to wear a cone of shame but Miss Houdini gets out of it every time so I’ve given up on that. So some good thoughts that everything resolves quickly would appreciated.

Other than that, even a week later, I’m still trying to get back in my routine after having a week off. It was so hard to go back to work but I got through the week. Today is painting class and tomorrow errands and somewhere in there I should clean the house. Hope everyone has nice weather this weekend . I’m off to walk the dogs while it’s still cool.

    • Tara July 26, 2025 / 12:22 pm

Oh goodness for both your fur babies! I hope they recover soon. Maybe Valkyrie would tolerate a donut?

    • DEBG July 26, 2025 / 1:37 pm

Sending you all good thoughts and healing purrs. The dogs may not appreciate love from my cats, but I know you will!

My ex used to put his water glass on the headboard shelf at night. One morning we woke up to Pablo helping himself (in his defense, he couldn’t easily get off the bed by himself; what else was he supposed to do?). Ex used a pint glass, too, so it was a nice wide opening for him to get his little snoot into. Started putting it on the nightstand after that. Can’t help but wonder how many times he’d done that before, though. 😄

Last night I learned that when the Rottweiler originated in Germany it was known as the Rottweiler Metzgerhund, “meaning Rottweil butchers’ dogs, because their main use was to herd livestock and pull carts laden with butchered meat to market.” [wikipedia] (Rottweil is a town in southwest Germany.) My mom’s maiden name is Metzger. 🙂

A little weekend activity if you like jigsaw puzzles…🧩🐶

The dogs, and the kittens that look like dogs (those ears!), were good, in case you were wondering.

    • Tara July 26, 2025 / 12:20 pm

Thanks for the puzzle site! Fun. 🙂 I love that I can upload a photo of my own.

      • allein 🐾 July 26, 2025 / 12:28 pm

I have a folder where I save pictures I come across that I think would make good jigsaw puzzles. I usually just do the two new ones under recent puzzles each day (plus the mystery puzzle on Fridays).

        • DEBG July 26, 2025 / 1:38 pm

I *always* do the Friday mystery puzzle! It’s part of my Friday evening routine.

        • 6Rabbits July 26, 2025 / 7:26 pm

I tend to go in spurts, do many several days in a row, then don’t do any for 1-2 months.

    • DEBG July 26, 2025 / 1:49 pm

I want Moti. And platypus dogs, along with platypuses (platypodi?).

This countdown helps heal my soul every week.

    • 6Rabbits July 26, 2025 / 7:24 pm

How in the heck do you get ELEVEN dogs to ride a surf board at the same time!?
I love Moti, but I think he’s gonna be a big dog!

So many interesting things going on with the dogs this week and with everyone else… Wishing everyone a happy week and that we eventually get a picture of Moss having zoomies on the paddleboard

  8. Tara July 26, 2025 / 12:19 pm

Good Morning All, My sweet Jacques! What a character. As I’m watching the video, I realize I took it on the night of 4th of July. The background soundtrack is West Philly going crazy, complete with sirens.

It has been a rough week here y’all. I left the garage door open on the second day when running errands. I feel very bad about this because at 51, I should be able to remember put the dang door down when I leave! But it’s not my home, garage, car etc. and somehow, this detail doesn’t stick. (I’ve now made a sign and taped it to the steering wheel). The neighbor called my dad’s wife (in Portland), who called me and chewed me out. Why the neighbor couldn’t call my dad – who was home and would not have freaked out as much- is beyond me. Nothing appears to have been stolen – thank goodness, but that seems to have painted me as the person responsible for everything else that’s gone wrong: someone hacking my dad’s debit card and our inability (he and I) to fix it over the phone, the house alarm going off with no explanation (everything was closed and locked), and goodness knows what else. I also arrived here to find a basal cell carcinoma had been removed from my dad’s forehead that might as well be the size of Texas. It is a giant open wound. I have to keep it clean and bandaged which was a shock at first, but now is fine. It’s amazing how much we can stomach for the people we love. And to top it all off, Butch got out on Thursday and hasn’t come back in. 😢 I’m trying not to worry, but I’ve also asked my tenant to help the house sitter see if they can’t lure him in again. As a former feral cat, he can handle himself, but I want to know he’s okay. Sorry – I just needed to vent a little. I was so looking forward to this stay with my dad, and it’s bogged down with a lot of old family baggage.

Today we are going to go over to my sister’s house to tye-dye backpacks for the kids. Maybe my nephew and I will go for a bike ride. My dad and I have been watching the Tour de France every morning, which is a nice way to start the day.

    • DEBG July 26, 2025 / 1:40 pm

Lots of hugs and healing purrs.

I was going to ask how Butch was doing–doesn’t he have some health issues going on? Maybe he’s just waiting until you get back.

And Jacques is lovely–and helpful!–as always.

    • Tara July 26, 2025 / 7:42 pm

      Thanks Duckie and DebG. 🥰

We tye-dyed backpacks and they came out pretty good! The zippers stayed white, but that’s okay. The rest look great.

Butch is (knock-on-wood) fine health wise. And luckily I had time to give all of them nasty flea stuff before I left so he’s protected that way too. Jacques is the one who just had the infected claw bed. He seems to be fine now. No swelling and no pain.

We just got back from my sister’s. Vinnie, her ancient cat (22 or 23 we’re not sure) is still alive and kicking. Still comes “running” for skritches. “Running” is a relative term when you are 22 and weigh about 3lbs. But he loves the attention. Definetly feeling better than this morning.

  9. DEBG July 26, 2025 / 1:43 pm

It’s good to have a supervisor cat, and Jacques does it so well!

Just got back from the arts picnic in the town where I used to live, about 15 miles from here. It was also the farmers market so now I don’t have to grocery shop. Treated myself to some gorgeous hand-dyed yarn, even though I will not come close to meeting my monthly exercise target–that’s often my reward for hitting the goal of 24 sessions per month.

Sending you all lots of hugs.

I find in favor of the plaintiff. Case closed.

Beautiful kitty! His fur will all grow back, I’m sure. And like you, I find in his favor.

A recalcitrant Maine Coon is apparently very difficult!
Love his posh male voice! And she did a great job despite his unwillingness👍🏼

The stance for “yes, you may brush my maine.” What a diva!
