Here’s a hero getting a hero’s reward. Reader Eve S. says “I don’t know if you’ve every featured Apopo’s HeroRats or not, but they are awesome and adorable. They are big rats trained in Tanzania to detect mines. They work in Africa, Southeast Asia, and other places. They are light enough to walk through minefields without getting hurt.”
This adorable polar bear cub was born last November at Berlin’s Tierpark Zoo, but until his first checkup this month, zookeepers didn’t know his gender. It took weeks of gaining the mother’s trust before the two could be separated for his exam. Tierpark is now asking the public’s help in choosing a suitable name.

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but these animals find it delightful. Recent snows in Oregon closed the Oregon Zoo to the public, but transformed it into a winter wonderland for polar bears, otters, and… an elephant?!
