Maru’s owner is feeling scientific, and devises an experiment to learn if Maru and Hana are right- or left-handed. As it turns out, Hana is left-handed, and Maru is… a glassware store accident waiting to happen.
Let’s have a hand for Andrew Y.!

Maru is face (of world leader) >:3
As far as Maru was concerned, it wasn’t a glass, it was a round box. Therefore, the head/body go in, not a paw.
Yes, exactly!
ha ha ha!!!!
Maru isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, is he? Still cute, though.
I was thinking the same thing. He’s a lover, not a thinker.
Maru doesn’t need to be clever, he gets by on perseverance and cuteness.
Hana puts the “paw” in “southpaw”. Meanwhile, you can’t say Maru doesn’t throw himself head -first into what he does.
If I don’t fit I tips!! Nommed.
Right!
Good thing I couldn’t watch this at work. My coworkers would have thought I’d lost my mind.
Welp, I know how I’ll be spending my evening! Until today, I never thought about whether my cats were right-pawed or left pawed. Now, I can’t stand not not knowing! To the kitchen!
I’ve read that elephants are right- or left-tusked. Makes sense other animals would have a dominant side, too.
I sent the video to my mom and suggested she test the cats.
My mother thinks Stripes seems to be right-handed. She’s not sure about Stars.
In case anyone was wondering. 😉
I do not have a cat right now, but our dog Joey (learned from experience because he likes to clean out yogurt cups) like Maru, is face.
Stars might be face, too.
Are those your babies? They are lovely!
omg What adorable babies!
Stars and Stripes. Best cat combo name. Stripes does have awesome stripes. Such cuties. Hey Mom. Go test the cats. Too funny.
They aren’t babies anymore; they’ll be 10 in May. I think they were about 4 months in that picture. My cousin found them (along with their two siblings) on his boat when they were a couple of days old. His wife and kids took care of them for 7 weeks (he’s allergic and they already had a rather unfriendly cat so they couldn’t keep them). The kids named them Stripes and Mitsy (the others were Claws and Sailor; they went to a friend and someone my cousin knew through work, respectively). Somehow my mother agreed to take the other two. They came home the day before Independence Day, and that’s how Mitsy became Stars (technically, she’s mine but she doesn’t live with me). Stripes is the only one with that coloring; the other two looked just like Stars (and one of them went to a home that had a cat that looked just like Stripes!)
Here’s grown-up Stars having her coffee. 😉
BTW, Stars has stripes, too, they’re just different shades of gray so they’re not as obvious in pictures. She was a few months old before they really showed up.
Cute little ones! My orange guy turned out to be face, too. He batted the cup with his left and right paw about equally, but mostly just jammed his face in it and got it stuck on his nose. So, I’ve concluded he’s an ambidufus. Maru is a rocket scientist compared to my little fluff brain. Now to test the others…
“ambidufus”
Note to self: don’t read comments while brushing teeth.
Ambidufus. I’m ded now. Seriously, that is brilliant.
Mike, is it time to start our own dictionary?
Maybe, but regardless I’m saving “ambidufus” for future use.
Alleen, your kittehs are just gorgeous.
Well one of my kittehs is right pawed, the other two sniffed the glass and then ignored it. Cats! 😀
Best new word of 2016: ambidufus!!!
I like this – Mugumogu participates more than usual, but she doesn’t overshadow M&H – it’s a fun change of pace.
Oh, and as for the results – Hana is a leftie, and Maru is…a law unto himself!
Aren’t all kitties?
So now, if any of us are scratched to death by our dear kitties, CSI will be able to narrow the field of culprits based on this test. Quick, someone write a TV plot using this factoid. (I too will be testing my four to determine whether they are right or left pawed. I think I’ll use a plastic cup rather than glass.)
CSI? Cat Scratch Investigators?
Exactly.
That totally needs to be a show! Now, who to cast?
Lionardo DiCatrio would make a good detective.
Ha!
Kat Dennings? William Katt? Cat(e) Blanchett? Cat Stevens? Eartha Kitt?
Hahaha.
“Hana is left-handed, and Maru is … face?”
That just cracked me up.
I’d say Maru is as dumb as a box of rocks, but given a box of rocks, Maru would just try to fit into it somehow.
This comment cracked me up. 😛
Left. Right. Face. Other.
Maru may be Face. He is also Other as in otherlyabled.
Most animals are left pawed with some right. And others, like Maru, march to their own drummer.
Since bunnies do not use their paws in this way, I wonder if they have a dominant side? I think most buns would be “face” given that they use their teeth to move things. Maybe a test to see in which direction they are more likely to toss things? Hmmmm…
Dominate tossing direction. ROFLOL
Right or left eared? 🙂
My favorite bun takes my finger in his teeth (but doesn’t clamp down and actually bite) and moves it to the side if he doesn’t like where my hands are. It is adorable. I will try to remember to note whether he moves it to the left or the right more.
My parrot is left-taloned. Likes to perch on my right shoulder so that he can use that left footie to hold my ear and keep my head from moving. That vantage also seems to allow him to dive-bomb my fork from his lefthand side as I’m trying to eat my dinner (he expects his tithe, after all).
I’ve known a few people that had birds, but not well. I know they live too long and are too smart not to have personalities. Thanks for sharing Birdcage, that is awesome.
Also
?Pass the “dutchie” on the left hand side?
Left taloned. Ded.
Left-talented.
I do think Merlin has Birdcage sufficiently subdued.
