Gotta Hand it to Maru

Maru’s owner is feeling scientific, and devises an experiment to learn if Maru and Hana are right- or left-handed. As it turns out, Hana is left-handed, and Maru is… a glassware store accident waiting to happen.

Let’s have a hand for Andrew Y.!

Maru is face (of world leader) >:3

  2. Lurkingduck March 14, 2016 / 4:20 pm

As far as Maru was concerned, it wasn’t a glass, it was a round box. Therefore, the head/body go in, not a paw.

    • Sedro6 March 14, 2016 / 6:17 pm

      Yes, exactly!

    • Julie March 14, 2016 / 6:42 pm

      ha ha ha!!!!

Maru isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, is he? Still cute, though.

    • debg March 14, 2016 / 5:17 pm

I was thinking the same thing. He’s a lover, not a thinker.

  4. Gigi_the cat lady March 14, 2016 / 5:02 pm

Maru doesn’t need to be clever, he gets by on perseverance and cuteness.

  5. Starfish March 14, 2016 / 5:27 pm

Hana puts the “paw” in “southpaw”. Meanwhile, you can’t say Maru doesn’t throw himself head -first into what he does.

    If I don’t fit I tips!! Nommed.

    • Lurkingduck March 14, 2016 / 6:57 pm

      Right!

  7. allein March 14, 2016 / 6:48 pm

Good thing I couldn’t watch this at work. My coworkers would have thought I’d lost my mind.

  8. AB March 14, 2016 / 6:54 pm

Welp, I know how I’ll be spending my evening! Until today, I never thought about whether my cats were right-pawed or left pawed. Now, I can’t stand not not knowing! To the kitchen!

    • allein March 14, 2016 / 7:03 pm

I’ve read that elephants are right- or left-tusked. Makes sense other animals would have a dominant side, too.

I sent the video to my mom and suggested she test the cats.

      • allein March 14, 2016 / 9:04 pm

My mother thinks Stripes seems to be right-handed. She’s not sure about Stars.

In case anyone was wondering. 😉

        • Haha March 14, 2016 / 9:15 pm

I do not have a cat right now, but our dog Joey (learned from experience because he likes to clean out yogurt cups) like Maru, is face.

          • allein March 14, 2016 / 9:35 pm

            Stars might be face, too.

            • Debg March 14, 2016 / 9:54 pm

              omg What adorable babies!

            • Faye March 14, 2016 / 10:01 pm

Stars and Stripes. Best cat combo name. Stripes does have awesome stripes. Such cuties. Hey Mom. Go test the cats. Too funny.

            • allein March 14, 2016 / 10:24 pm

They aren’t babies anymore; they’ll be 10 in May. I think they were about 4 months in that picture. My cousin found them (along with their two siblings) on his boat when they were a couple of days old. His wife and kids took care of them for 7 weeks (he’s allergic and they already had a rather unfriendly cat so they couldn’t keep them). The kids named them Stripes and Mitsy (the others were Claws and Sailor; they went to a friend and someone my cousin knew through work, respectively). Somehow my mother agreed to take the other two. They came home the day before Independence Day, and that’s how Mitsy became Stars (technically, she’s mine but she doesn’t live with me). Stripes is the only one with that coloring; the other two looked just like Stars (and one of them went to a home that had a cat that looked just like Stripes!)

              Here’s grown-up Stars having her coffee. 😉

            • allein March 14, 2016 / 10:27 pm

BTW, Stars has stripes, too, they’re just different shades of gray so they’re not as obvious in pictures. She was a few months old before they really showed up.

            • AB March 14, 2016 / 10:41 pm

Cute little ones! My orange guy turned out to be face, too. He batted the cup with his left and right paw about equally, but mostly just jammed his face in it and got it stuck on his nose. So, I’ve concluded he’s an ambidufus. Maru is a rocket scientist compared to my little fluff brain. Now to test the others…

            • allein March 14, 2016 / 10:44 pm

              “ambidufus”

Note to self: don’t read comments while brushing teeth.

            • Faye March 14, 2016 / 10:54 pm

Ambidufus. I’m ded now. Seriously, that is brilliant.

            • Lurkingduck March 14, 2016 / 11:10 pm

Mike, is it time to start our own dictionary?

            • Saffron March 15, 2016 / 10:02 am

Alleen, your kittehs are just gorgeous.

Well one of my kittehs is right pawed, the other two sniffed the glass and then ignored it. Cats! 😀

            • Catwhisperer March 15, 2016 / 10:20 am

Best new word of 2016: ambidufus!!!

  9. Smartypants March 14, 2016 / 7:37 pm

I like this – Mugumogu participates more than usual, but she doesn’t overshadow M&H – it’s a fun change of pace.

Oh, and as for the results – Hana is a leftie, and Maru is…a law unto himself!

    • beemoused March 15, 2016 / 10:24 am

      Aren’t all kitties?

  10. Ms Can Opener March 14, 2016 / 8:34 pm

So now, if any of us are scratched to death by our dear kitties, CSI will be able to narrow the field of culprits based on this test. Quick, someone write a TV plot using this factoid. (I too will be testing my four to determine whether they are right or left pawed. I think I’ll use a plastic cup rather than glass.)

    • Lurkingduck March 14, 2016 / 11:11 pm

      CSI? Cat Scratch Investigators?

      • Faye March 14, 2016 / 11:35 pm

        Exactly.

      • Smartypants March 15, 2016 / 7:25 am

That totally needs to be a show! Now, who to cast?

        • Haha March 15, 2016 / 8:21 am

Lionardo DiCatrio would make a good detective.

          • Faye March 15, 2016 / 8:39 am

            Ha!

        • Smartypants March 15, 2016 / 9:36 am

Kat Dennings? William Katt? Cat(e) Blanchett? Cat Stevens? Eartha Kitt?

          • Faye March 15, 2016 / 11:44 am

            Hahaha.

  11. Tim McDaniel March 14, 2016 / 9:01 pm

“Hana is left-handed, and Maru is … face?”

    That just cracked me up.

I’d say Maru is as dumb as a box of rocks, but given a box of rocks, Maru would just try to fit into it somehow.

    • allein March 14, 2016 / 9:03 pm

This comment cracked me up. 😛

    • Faye March 14, 2016 / 10:04 pm

      Left. Right. Face. Other.
Maru may be Face. He is also Other as in otherlyabled.

  12. Elaine C Williamson March 14, 2016 / 10:01 pm

Most animals are left pawed with some right. And others, like Maru, march to their own drummer.

  13. 6rabbits March 14, 2016 / 10:11 pm

Since bunnies do not use their paws in this way, I wonder if they have a dominant side? I think most buns would be “face” given that they use their teeth to move things. Maybe a test to see in which direction they are more likely to toss things? Hmmmm…

    • Faye March 14, 2016 / 10:24 pm

      Dominate tossing direction. ROFLOL

    • Alison March 15, 2016 / 12:49 am

      Right or left eared? 🙂

    • Brandi March 15, 2016 / 8:44 am

My favorite bun takes my finger in his teeth (but doesn’t clamp down and actually bite) and moves it to the side if he doesn’t like where my hands are. It is adorable. I will try to remember to note whether he moves it to the left or the right more.

  14. birdcage March 15, 2016 / 8:59 am

My parrot is left-taloned. Likes to perch on my right shoulder so that he can use that left footie to hold my ear and keep my head from moving. That vantage also seems to allow him to dive-bomb my fork from his lefthand side as I’m trying to eat my dinner (he expects his tithe, after all).

    • Haha March 15, 2016 / 9:07 am

I’ve known a few people that had birds, but not well. I know they live too long and are too smart not to have personalities. Thanks for sharing Birdcage, that is awesome.

    • Haha March 15, 2016 / 9:11 am

      Also
?Pass the “dutchie” on the left hand side?

    • Faye March 15, 2016 / 11:46 am

      Left taloned. Ded.

      • Haha March 15, 2016 / 12:49 pm

        Left-talented.

        • Faye March 15, 2016 / 12:54 pm

I do think Merlin has Birdcage sufficiently subdued.
