Links: I Think Timmy’s Trying to Tell Us Something!

And finally: Tiny Titan

In Marvel comics, Thanos is a titanic megavillian, but this Thanos is much smaller and cuter. He’s a Kirk’s dik-dik, one of the world’s smallest breeds of antelope. Fully grown, he’ll be less thn 16 inches tall and at the moment he’s too light to register on the zoo’s scales. Thanks to submitters Paul P. and Arne. More details at The Telegraph.

      Add him to the menagerie!!

Oh, yeah! He goes with us. And I had seen the headline of the dog in the well and couldn’t bring myself to look at it – I knew it had a happy ending but I don’t know about you guys, I’m having a tough time dealing with emotionally charged content. I seem to need to keep it happy. Koala is happy!

Maybe it’s a good thing I can’t actually see the pictures right now. (They seem to be from Twitter and my work blocks them.)

Haven’t watched the dik-dik video yet but I can see the still picture in my email.

Yeah, these days I’m leery of any story that proposes to tug at my heartstrings – they’ve been through enough!

I can’t access the videos (that’s just my computer, not a problem with the site) but I think the photos and text are ‘safe’ – no distressing injury pix or neglect/abuse. Briefly – puppy was rescued safe and sound, and he’s been adopted by the firefighters who helped save him. If you scroll to the end, there’s a sweet picture of them together.

The video where they pull him out made me worry because everyone was cheering and I’d think he must have been frightened with all the noise and people. But then there’s a cute video of him pouncing at the vet’s office. I guess he couldn’t have been in too bad shape if he was playing.

I just noticed the best thing – in the photo where puppy is in the pink plaid blanket, he’s got his nose in a cup – at first I thought it was water, but it’s actually a snout-shaped oxygen mask! (you can see the O2 gear in foreground). Now I love these rescuers even more. I know animal O2 masks exist, but I’m impressed that they actually had one.

Speaking of snouts – in the hummingbird video, look closely from about :19-:23 – she sticks her tongue out – “give me sugar water!” That’s pretty squee.

OMG! I totally missed the hummingbird tongue!! Never seen that before! 🙂

First thing I thought too! I love its little mohawk.

I love the Dik-dik’s nose, it seems to have a mind of it’s own.

Like a subcompact model of saiga antelope.

Yes, isn’t that amazing it’s perfect for those Hollywood style air kisses.

    (Duckie mounts soapbox)
I stand here today to protest!
We have been inundated lately with all sorts of cute baby animals. We have lost our collective heart to miniature squeaks, squeals and diverse other baby noises. We have watched in tearful awe as the tiny cute of our world are gently cared for.
My point? Those who are caring for the tiny cute are being PAID to do so, when we residents of Cutetropolis would KILL to be allowed to volunteer!
(Duckie falls off soapbox from indignation, and quietly drags it away. We now return you to your regularly scheduled cute.)

      I hear you…

The “dog down the well” story raised more questions than it answered (though maybe I merely missed the answers). Why was there an uncovered 230 foot deep hole? It wasn’t really a well, was it, or there’d have been water at the bottom and the poor puppy would have drowned and we’d never know about it. Was it for some other purpose, or not finished yet (there’s water deeper)? How did a puppy survive a 230 foot fall? Even if bouncing off the walls slowed him down, it still seems like it’d have been fatal. How did anyone hear him at the surface from 230 feet away? How did he survive so long without more air down there (carbon dioxide is heavy, seems like it’d settle in the bottom of the hole and suffocate him)? What about the waste (there didn’t appear to be any room for him to designate a potty corner he could otherwise avoid). I’d think I was misunderstanding the depth (the whole thing was translated from Turkish, after all, which means it was also translated from metric) but there’s a photo looking straight down and that seems like 230 feet.

Oh, and the koala was taken to Australia Zoo, not Australian Zoo. It’s just one letter, but we all like to have our names spelled correctly. And that article says there’s a video below that never loads, for me. The Australia Zoo site has a little more information but not much.

    • Murray C. February 21, 2017 / 8:54 am

Yes, I had those questions, too, especially leaving a hole like that open – suppose it had been a kid! That would’ve caused a brouhaha.

    • Blue Footed Booby February 21, 2017 / 8:56 am

There might also have been a shallow part, or the whole thing might have had only enough water to break the fall.

Otherwise, my guess would be that the photo is deceptive and it’s not actually THAT deep, and the number is either a mistranslation or blind speculation.

      Just guessing. vOv

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one confused. I see “70 metre” in one of the captions, but since I can’t read the words surrounding it, I can’t verify that’s a depth. The photos of the puppy don’t show any water but they also don’t show the “floor.” They have a bright light in them; if it’s daylight from the top of the hole, it’s not nearly 70 meters/230 feet deep, but I imagine it’s probably a light attached to the camera they apparently lowered on a rope/cable. I’d try a Turkish-to-English online translator for the captions but other than a good laugh I doubt it’d accomplish much.

Thanks for the replies, Murray C. and Blue Footed Booby.
