Maru and Hana Have a Garden Party

And now, pull up a lawn chair, pour yourself an iced tea, grab a big bucket of grass, and relax with Maru and Hana as they enjoy a peaceful day in the backyard.

Maru, don’t you know it’s ladies first when one descends off of a pedestal? *thwack thwack!!*

Hana sure had a lot to say! I don’t know what it was, but my cats seemed to find it very interesting.

I wonder if cats can understand each other. Do they have different languages? Do Hana and Maru speak Japanese cat?

I’m sorta relieved to know that Maru and Hana’s lawn isn’t as perfect as the interior of the house. Interesting how the grass is in rectangles.

Yes, I was relieved to see that too.

At first glance I thought it was chewed up by a lawnmower, but I think it’s actually strips of sod.

They both look less than thrilled with the outdoors, but Maru seems quite satisfied with himself in conquering the swing!

Those pedestals they’re sitting on at the open are really interesting! I wonder what the textured sides are made out of? in any case, making one a tortoise and one a rooster shows an artist with a real sense of humor! I can see these in a multitude of different animals. More places for Maru to swat at Hana from. 😀

I believe they’re made of concrete with flat, well polished pebbles inserted into the sides, edges facing out – very nice. I noticed and admired them, too.

Not for the first time, I wonder what her day job must be, to be able to afford that house and a yard (any yard at all, but what looks like a good-sized yard) in a country where most people live in an apartment the size of a walk-in closet. With their parents.

That does look like a recently sodded lawn. Maybe this was filmed earlier in the spring?

I wonder what she would do if they both took off over the fence at the same time in opposite directions. Having dogs outside is one thing; they are lousy climbers. Cats … I’d be nervous with cats.

Is that some special cat grass, or do cats just like regular grass? She was growing it in a special container (it wasn’t merely lawn grass). It wasn’t nip, though, was it? So is there a particular cat grass, I wonder?

Seems like they’ve been working on their yard/garden for at least a year now :O

You are correct, it is indeed cat grass 😀

I had forgotten (if I saw it) the video from 2016. Wow, she tore that yard all the way down to the dirt. Nothing much left but the trees. I’m surprised the grass isn’t better established by now if she put it in last year, but what do I know about landscaping in Japan? I don’t know much about it in the US.

I saw potted kitty greens in the supermarket this morning, labeled “oat grass” ( I guess it’s the micro-greens you get when you plant oats) and I’ve also seen ones that were wheat grass (from wheat berries) – I imagine there are others too.

What is this glorious place that has both cuckoos and cicadas??? The sounds of summer, but I have to travel halfway around the world to hear the cicadas. BTW, I will be joining Hana and Maru in spirit for the next 10 weeks… a little garden party every day (our “luck and superstition” garden party last weekend in Vienna was a hit, and we’re celebrating the 4th of July to open my own little garden season). School ends Friday July 7th!
