I needed this cute today. Mom & stepdad are trapped in a shelter in FL. I spent an hour online on Thursday with cheapoair.com to find them a flight out of Ft. Lauderdale yesterday. They get to the airport to find that the flight doesn’t actually exist and the flights that did exist were full. We are slightly less than thrilled today…

    • Murray C September 9, 2017 / 10:50 am

Oh, Muppet2171, I am so sorry for your situation! That is simply awful. I hope that they will be OK.

    • Amyliz September 9, 2017 / 10:58 am

That must be such a helpless feeling, Muppet2171. I am wishing the best for them; keep us posted.

      Love these little orange babies!

      • Duckie ? September 9, 2017 / 12:46 pm

My iPad screen makes them look pink! Pink floof at sunrise!

    • Ricky's Mom September 9, 2017 / 11:07 am

Oh, Muppet2171, how rotten! Sending best wishes for a happy outcome for you and yours—and a speedy one!

      ☹️

    • Maia September 9, 2017 / 11:24 am

Sending lots of positive thoughts and prayers for your family members, Muppet! And for everyone in the area of Irma and Jose!

    • Jan September 9, 2017 / 11:29 am

How upsetting! But being in a shelter is better than some available options; I’m sure they’ll come through all right. My 95-yo grandmother lives in Florida also. She’s north of Port St. Lucie on the east side, so hopefully she won’t be too badly impacted or have to evacuate. She has plenty of family in the area though, so I’m sure she’ll be taken care of one way or another. (She’s pretty stubborn though and may refuse to evac if the order comes…)

Keep in mind that conditions/services/assistance in Florida will certainly be better than what some of the Caribbean islands are experiencing…

    • debg September 9, 2017 / 11:47 am

I’m so sorry–the combo of frustration and worry must be exhausting for you all. The 7 cats and I are sending purrs to you and your family.

    • Dubravkamcvmd September 9, 2017 / 12:14 pm

Very upsetting. Worrying about your Mom’s safety is horrible.

    • Muppet2171 September 9, 2017 / 12:17 pm

The place where they are has medical personnel available and generators, so hopefully all will be ok. *fingers crossed*

      • Amyliz September 9, 2017 / 5:37 pm

I think they will be safe there although they may not be in the most comfortable setting. Will keep my fingers crossed (and eyes!) crossed as well.

    • Duckie ? September 9, 2017 / 7:14 pm

Please let us know when they are safe.

  2. AJ September 9, 2017 / 9:38 am

Oooh, me first, me first!! Good weekend everyone – won’t say happy since many folks here are in the middle of bad weather. Love these kitties!!!!!! They’re so FLUFFY! Sad face – last time I checked my copier at work wasn’t spitting out kitties. Might have to have a repairman in to see what’s wrong, lol.

Hubby is back on the road til the end of the month so it’s me time this weekend – brunch with my Canadian expat friends and a haircut. Some other friends are supposed to come over later or I’ll go hang at there place. Then errands tomorrow.

For those in Irma’s path or cleaning up from Harvey, good luck and stay safe. Everyone else have a fun weekend.

Surgery update: The staples came out a few days ago and I’ve graduated to a cane. Where metrics are concerned, I can flatten my knee down to within 2 degrees of perfectly straight and can flex enough to make it over the top on an exercise cycle going the reverse direction (100-110 degrees, depending on seat height). Most of you might not understand what those numbers mean, but they’re pretty darn good for less than 3 weeks! ?

My mom will be staying for another week at least because I can’t drive yet (bloody $%# meds) and I need to get to the gym most days. She’s spoiling Lily like crazy and we’re both going to miss her when she finally goes!

    • Murray C September 9, 2017 / 10:51 am

That’s a great report, Jan – keep up the good work. You’re lucky that your mom can be such a help for you – and that she’s spoiling Lily – what else is a grandchild/cat for?

    • Ricky's Mom September 9, 2017 / 11:08 am

Good going, Jan, so happy to hear your news!

      Wonderful news, Jan!

    • Gigi the cat lady September 9, 2017 / 11:40 am

Good on you Jan! Keep the good work and you’ll be running after Lily in no time!

    • Dubravkamcvmd September 9, 2017 / 12:16 pm

Great news and a big relief for you, I’m sure.

  4. 6rabbits September 9, 2017 / 9:43 am

Hey All! I’ve been following along here, just lurking.
Change in grades going as well as can be expected, tho 23 second graders is a challenge! Did you know a child could cry for an hour?! Have one who is hysterical every morning and one who cried for 1 1/2 hours when she couldn’t do her work! I have pre-primer readers thru begining of 3rd grade readers. Not even gonna discuss math?. I’ve been at school til closing most days–which is 7:00. Labor Day Weekend was a true blessing! I decided I just need a 3 day weekend every week and I could deal.?
?Happy Birthdays to all I’ve missed, and congrats, too!?

    • Maia September 9, 2017 / 11:31 am

Hang in there, 6Rabbits. I hope things ease up soon. The start of the school year is always stressful as you get to know the new kiddos (and vice versa).

    • Murray C September 9, 2017 / 11:32 am

An hour and a half? You need another summer off! Teachers are amazing – most of us have no idea what you contend with beyond the actual organizational and classroom duties. I salute you all!

    • Julie September 9, 2017 / 1:24 pm

It would take too long for me to explain why your post is so hilarious.

  5. allein ? September 9, 2017 / 10:37 am

Good morning, i would like the shy-looking one on the right, please. Yesterday I went to the park and saw a deer eating little apples that had fallen from a tree. Then a little farther on I heard what sounded like a flute, but I couldn’t tell where it was coming from. Finally I walked past a grove of trees and a woman was sitting at a picnic table playing a flute. 🙂

Hope everyone in Florida is staying safe this weekend. My former coworker in St. Thomas hasn’t posted anything on Facebook yet. I hope she’s all right. My cousin posted 3 “before” pictures of his place in Jupiter and is hoping he’ll be able to post the same three pictures after. I’m nervously watching the news on and off.

And finally, I feel terrible but I laughed and had to share. Happy(?) Saturday!
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8lF0SUeDMI

    • Murray C September 9, 2017 / 10:59 am

      That is pretty hilarious.

I’ve been watching the news and now the storm is going up the west coast – we have friends on the west coast – Fort Myers area – they’re not there right now – they only live there half the year, but they’re going to Europe and I’m sure they’ll be concerned about damage. Also we have family who are hunkered down somewhere along the Gulf.

I was happy to see that Mike is still cranking out Cutetropolis posts! May that be the case all through this mess. Stay safe, Mike.

    • Julie September 9, 2017 / 11:15 am

I love the squeek from the puppy!

      • Faye September 9, 2017 / 4:32 pm

Me too. Couldn’t help but chuckle.

    • Maia September 9, 2017 / 12:06 pm

Thanks for the laugh (poor doggo!) Allein! I love your story about the flute player. It can be so magical to catch strains of music on the air and not know where it is coming from, until you find the minstrel.

And I hope you have good news about your coworker soon!

      • allein ? September 9, 2017 / 1:01 pm

I looked at her facebook page again after I posted earlier and saw a comment from her sister saying she and her family are fine. Don’t know about their boat, though. I imagine she doesn’t have power or internet at the moment.

When I first heard the flute I realized it was playing Wind Beneath My Wings. I think we could do with a little less wind these days…

On a side note, I’ve been having trouble with the site loading only a blank white page in Chrome. It’s been doing it at work for a few weeks now, but it works fine in Internet Explorer, but this morning it started doing it on my tablet (I posted my comment and the page reloaded nothing, but I got the subscription confirmation thing in my email, so I knew it had posted; I just couldn’t see it. I tried opening the site directly in Chrome, instead of from my email, and that didn’t work either), so if I seem to disappear for a while it might be that I’m not on my computer. I don’t know if this is anything to do with the site, though. I tried googling and found stuff about antivirus settings and a couple other possibilities, none of which particularly help me on my tablet (and I don’t have the antivirus program it mentioned). I dunno…I know we’re not a super-techy bunch here but if anyone has any idea…

  6. N. Fritz September 9, 2017 / 10:58 am

Where did the summer go?! School starts on Monday and I’m totally in denial. Plus, I’ve got a very close friend in the path of Irma (surprised by the western shift). To top it all off I learned last night that another dear but seldomly heard from friend passed away unexpectedly a couple of weeks ago. So lots on my mind this weekend…

When I was growing up, the local children’s show host had a great sign off: “Take it easy, play it safe, and be careful!” Good advice for everyone, really! Let’s be careful out there!

    • Murray C September 9, 2017 / 11:05 am

Ah, N. Fritz, sorry about your friends – how difficult to find out after the fact that a dear friend has died! Heartbreaking.

Good luck with the start of school – denial will disappear like a bubble when you’re confronted with all those bright shining faces!

    • Maia September 9, 2017 / 11:36 am

The start of school is something I never quite felt ready for, either. And yet it always turns out okay!
I hope that your friend in FL stays safe, and I am sorry for your loss.

That’s my favorite line from Hill Street Blues. “And remember… Let’s be careful out there.”

    • Gigi the cat lady September 9, 2017 / 11:42 am

I had nightmares about the start of school when I was a kid, I loved learning but hated all the rules and the loss of freedom.

      • Maia September 9, 2017 / 12:00 pm

I had nightmares about the start of school every year, and I was the teacher.

        • Gigi the cat lady September 9, 2017 / 12:36 pm

Actually my 3rd grade teacher later told me she had nightmares about having me in her class before the year started LOL!! Seems I had a reputation of being disruptive, I think I was simply bored in class. But we got along very well because she could hold my attention and she turned out to be one of my favourite teacher

          • Murray C September 9, 2017 / 8:51 pm

I’m so envious – I was such a little goody-goody – nuns will do that to a person. Made up for it in later years.

  7. Julie September 9, 2017 / 11:19 am

Mike – I hope you’re okay. Thanks for thinking of us and “pre-loading” posts. You are a Rockstar!

    • Maia September 9, 2017 / 11:36 am

Ditto what Julie said. In Spades!

  8. Flowerfanatic September 9, 2017 / 11:27 am

We are completely geared up with anything movable either inside or secured and accordion storm shutters closed for what was supposed to be Irma coming straight up the center of FL but today that has changed. Our area is in for maybe a cat 1 with much lower winds as we’re only 15 miles from the ocean and wasn’t even in the picture where the outer band started on the display. Was very surprised this AM when I checked to see where it was. Hopefully those on the west coast have enough time to either evacuate or tie things down to stay. Cat 3 and 4 is predicted for them as of this AM. That’s up to 150 MPH winds. Things don’t look good for Georgia either and many people evacuated to go there from FL.

Let’s hope Jose doesn’t decide to follow in Irma’s footsteps as it looks like it is because one disastrous hurricane doesn’t need to be followed right by a second one. And it looks like Katia is going to do damage to the Gulf. There have never been so many in a row in the history of hurricanes. Guess Mother Nature wanted to really put on a show for us just because we’re going to be moving from FL to AZ as soon as Ron’s recovered from his aortic valve replacement surgery a couple of weeks ago.

    • Maia September 9, 2017 / 11:39 am

Flower, Mother Nature didn’t want you to feel any regrets about leaving. 😉
I’m glad you are all prepared (as prepped as one can be?), and I hope that it all goes safely for you.

  9. Caz September 9, 2017 / 11:31 am

It’s our 11 the wedding anniversary today, so i’m making my husband take me out for a nice meal, yes, making lol

I am of course hoping everyone in Irmas path stays safe, including all of the animals 🙁

    • Maia September 9, 2017 / 11:51 am

      Happy Anniversary, CAZ!

    • Ricky's Mom September 9, 2017 / 1:20 pm

Happy anniversary! and may there be many more!

Happy Anniversary, CAZ! Hope you’re enjoying a dee-lish repast.

  10. Puddleglum September 9, 2017 / 11:47 am

Good morning! I just got up after a much needed 13 hours of sleep so I’m feeling bright eyed and bushy tailed. Plans for the weekend are painting, reading, hosting my Tolkien book club tomorrow and agonizing over whether or not to buy this delightful but battered old book from 1812 and get it rebound.

My thoughts are with everyone dealing with hurricanes but could I also get some good vibes (and rain!!) headed in the general direction of Montana? Basically the whole state has been on fire for two months now. Over 500,000 acres have burned, 40 of our 56 counties are officially in a state of fire emergency and the smoke is so bad where I live I’m physically sick. I keep checking the forecast to see if any rain will be forthcoming but all of September is looking to be hot and dry. ARGH. I’ll regret saying this later but I can’t wait for snow!

    • Maia September 9, 2017 / 11:57 am

Thinking of you, Puddleglum- If there’s no rain, I hope you get some gentle breezes to clear the air but not fan any of the fires. 🙂

    • Ricky's Mom September 9, 2017 / 1:21 pm

      Sending good vibes your way!

    • Murray C September 9, 2017 / 8:56 pm

I don’t know which is worse – drought or torrential rain. Probably not really comparable since one is sudden and the other long and drawn out – but the worry of drought is really pervasive to the psyche. As a gardener I get really down during dry times. I hope that the northwest gets some relief and soon – the fires are fearsome.

  11. Gigi the cat lady September 9, 2017 / 11:49 am

I’m keeping an eye on the news about Irma today, my heart is with the the people in the path of the storm. Also, I’m nervous for the Hemingway cats and their keepers that are hunkered down at the Hemingway House in The Keys, I hope they come out of it OK.

My husband and I have a date night planned for tonight, diner at the restaurant and then a movie, we’ll probably see The Hitman’s Bodyguard since I’m not in the mood for anything sad or serious these days.

  12. Maia September 9, 2017 / 11:50 am

It’s been a Stressful week of filling out forms for early retirement from teaching. I taught for 30 years, and need to take a break for health reasons. There are so many little hoops to jump through, and decisions to make, and deadlines!
Unfortunately I am not really retiring; I will need to find some kind of work. So that is still up in the air…. and school started this week; it was very, very odd to be staying at home.
Still, I am trying to keep in mind how lucky I am. I am nowhere near the hurricanes, flooding, or fire zones. My thoughts are with those who are.

  13. debg September 9, 2017 / 11:59 am

Sending good vibes and kitty purrs to all who are dealing with hurricanes, wildfires, and other disasters. Your bravery and positive attitudes in the face of such uncertainty inspires us all. It also gives me a sense of perspective–my minor worries seem so trivial in comparison.

Great news about recoveries from ill health, grandcat spoilage, etc! And warm hugs of support to everybody feeling sad this weekend.

Loss is never easy. As my birthday approaches (next Thursday), I’m remembering the death of my grad school adviser on that day in 1997 and the death of another adviser just last year, on the day before. My birthdays seem to be kind of lethal for medieval historians!

It’s a good weekend for me to reflect on friends and family while I put my closets back together. Painting last weekend gave the bedroom closet new life, and it will also be great to sort through my belongings and donate to local charities. Wow, stuff accumulates!

Stay safe, all. And remember that mourning doesn’t last forever. It makes a place in our heart to hold the ones we’ve lost, so that we can never lose them.

    • N. Fritz September 10, 2017 / 8:41 am

Wise words, DebG. Death and mourning are part of life, but it doesn’t make it any less sad when someone who has had such a positive influence on us passes. I am taking my friend’s death as a cautionary tale (she also taught and gave 150% to her job, and although she loved it, her work ethic took a toll on her health, as it has mine). I am also taking the opportunity to connect with other friends with whom I’ve lost touch over the years. My friend’s sister assures me that “she was so fond of you” but I don’t think I’d received anything substantial from her since 2010. And I realize that I am guilty of the same behavior. Time to make some serious changes!

  14. Duckie ? September 9, 2017 / 12:08 pm

    Greetings, Cutetropolitans.
Thoughts and prayers for those being bombarded by storms. I’m glad we have a place where we can keep track of each other. Thank you, Mike.
Grampa is being moved on Monday to another place, for end-of-life care. His decision. This is a sad relief for us. Funny, that feeling. He will be spoiled rotten, and catered to, for as long as he is there. I am happy for that, but sad because that point has arrived. But I’m also happy because he was able to make that decision, and chose the place. But I’m sad because he had to.
Mom is exhausted with the Grampa situation, and I’m hoping this placement will ease her mind.
This next week is going to be all up-and-down. We have a condo meeting to discuss plans for the winter. I thought we would not be here this winter. Doctors’ appointments. Sewing (must get that shirt for hubby started!). The rain hurts my joints, but everything else loves the cool. Our local Sears store is closing, and they have insane prices on remaining stock. Finally I can afford a new winter coat: twenty dollars, regular one seventy five! I’m making plans to do a job shadowing session, to see if I can get a temporary part time Christmas job.
Our place is a mess, since I haven’t been able to do much, because of my back. Every time I start to do something, hubby freaks. “I don’t care if the place is a mess! I care about you! Sit down. Do you want some tea? A blanket?” And then he does the dishes or something.
Best to everyone for the coming week.

    • Gigi the cat lady September 9, 2017 / 12:45 pm

Your hubby is right, the housework is not as important as your health! Glad you could get a bargain on a winter coat, I was planning a shopping spree when our local Sears was going to close but they decided to keep it open, so I guess I’ll keep the old coat and boots for one more year ?

      • allein ? September 9, 2017 / 1:06 pm

Last year the Sears in my mall closed the upstairs only (which was clothing and shoes) and kept the downstairs open (housewares, electronics, appliances and auto). If they did any kind of clearance on the clothing I missed it. That part is now a cheap-trendy clothing store called Primark.

    • Ricky's Mom September 9, 2017 / 1:23 pm

My sympathy to you and your mom, Duckie. Your grampa is a brave man, and I am glad for his sake and yours that he was able to make the decision for himself.

And your husband is right. Injuring yourself further will not improve any situation.

  15. Laura September 9, 2017 / 12:37 pm

Hi, all. Long time no see! I took a vacation from the internet, so I’ve been offline for a while.

We’re in Tampa, but we’ll inland and at 61 feet (~20 meters) elevation, so if we have any flooding, it’s from rain. My husband is truly a storm expert, though — he’s been through many major typhoons in the years before we met, when he lived and worked in the western Pacific, including several with 200 mph winds, so he knows *exactly* what to do. It’s very comforting!

So we’re doing final preparations today — laundry, moving things that could get water damaged to higher spots, etc. We expect power to be out for a while, but we have batteries galore and are getting a portable solar panel for charging phones & stuff. It should arrive today.

We have full gas tanks, plenty of cash, food & meds for people and pets, water and also bleach if we go on a boil water order. Our house is concrete and floors and baseboards are tile, so minor flooding from rain won’t be a problem.

My daughter Rachel, who’s posted on here, can let you all know we’re okay if we don’t have power. So we’ll stay safe and, hopefully, dry! My husband’s only worry us if we get enough wind to peel the roof off. That could be a problem…but we have several shelters nearby.

Sorry to be so long-winded! Gotta run do some more work. Everyone take care, and I’ll see you on the other side!

    • Rachel September 9, 2017 / 7:22 pm

      I most certainly will!

    • Murray C September 9, 2017 / 8:57 pm

We’ll look forward to hearing from you, Laura!

  16. Patty September 9, 2017 / 12:39 pm

My son and his kids live in Crestview, FL (in the panhandle, near the gulf coast), as does his father, and his grandparents. While those are my ex in laws, and not my favorite people, I still don’t want to see them blown away by a hurricane. A few days ago my son assured me they weren’t supposed to get the brunt of the storm, but I hear it has changed directions. I am worried, but also trying to be reassuring to the other kids who are texting me to ask if he will evacuate. He can’t afford gas (if there is even any available) motel rooms (also probably booked up), and has no place to evacuate to. Hopefully his father will at least get out of the trailer he lives in and go stay with his parents in a real house.

My life is stressful right now, brother and his medical issues, husband and his blood sugar (diabetic, suddenly having low blood sugar episodes), niece and her addiction, trying to stay clean and get her kids back, but won’t leave the abusive baby daddy. With him in the picture, they won’t give the kids back, because he threatened to throw the baby down the stairs when she tried to leave. Some days I just want to disappear, but if I did, I’d still worry about everyone, so I guess I’ll stick around. I’ll look at cute animals and binge shows on netflix in the evenings. Problems in Star City (The show I am watching this week is Arrow, if anyone wonders.) will take my mind off of my own problems.

I hope everyone stays safe from hurricanes, wildfires, and clowns in sewers (I love Stephen King).

    • Ricky's Mom September 9, 2017 / 1:25 pm

Oh, Patty, I can’t even. I know you will stay strong, but I hope you won’t have to stay quite so strong for much longer. You have a lot on your plate.

    • Smartypants September 9, 2017 / 7:51 pm

Patty, I’m a big King fan too – I’m reading “End of Watch” – it’s the kind of book where you look up and realize it’s gotten dark outside and you haven’t moved in 2 hours because it’s so engrossing. I raced to the end because I was dying to see how it turned out – now I get to go back and revisit all the parts I skipped!

  17. tara September 9, 2017 / 12:48 pm

Hello All, What a week! I’m thinking everyone in Florida and now Georgia as well as those in the midst of fires. So much to worry about. Thinking good thoughts that we will all meet again next Saturday on the other side of things. xotara

  18. Ricky's Mom September 9, 2017 / 1:28 pm

Seem to have sprained both ankles slightly. I *told* my trainer I didn’t want to do any more footwork, and she insisted it was safe. Next time I’ll put my *metaphorical* foot down more firmly. Not really her fault; I could have insisted and didn’t. And my ankles sprain if you look at them funny.

Anyway, no long walks scheduled for today. I’ve been very motivated by my new Fitbit, and am doing well, but I need to remember that days off are important too.

    Stay safe, everyone!

    • Patty September 9, 2017 / 2:05 pm

Have you tried wrapping them before a workout? I think once you’ve had a sprain, you are more susceptible to sprains again. Hope they don’t cause you too much pain.

      • Ricky's Mom September 9, 2017 / 3:19 pm

Thanks, Patty. I think I’m going to ask my doctor if I need a p/t referral. I’m not sure it’s really a sprain; it might be a tendinitis or tendinosis (new word for me; it indicates thickening, rather than “itis,” which indicates inflammation. But self-diagnosis isn’t a great idea, so time to ask the doc. Whatever this is, it’s pain in the a—

    Hi All!

Sending thoughts to all in path of Irma.
I lived through a 6 foot storm surge from Hurricane Sandy. I’m 5’2″ and watched from my second floor apartment window as my SUV was covered completely and then some. Lights blazing from battery drowning in saltwater. If I was standing outside I would have had more than a foot of water over my head!

I had only about a foot of water in my first floor entry to the stairs in my apartment. But I still had to go live with my friend because of no heat or electricity in the aftermath.

You may come through the storm but that is only the beginning. The area I lived in has people still raising their houses or houses still empty almost 5 years later.

My friend lives a few blocks off of Raritan Bay in NJ. Their house has been in the process of being raised since last October. It took that long for the money to come through to start it, and for some reason they are having issues getting the money to finish it. I don’t understand how you let someone start a project like that and not guarantee they’ll be able to finish in a timely manner. It’s absolutely ridiculous. The one good thing is that they are renting a house from a friend of her mother’s, which he had moved out of and was preparing to sell, and he agreed to accept only the rental allowance they got from the state, which is not nearly enough to cover a place big enough for three adults and four kids (3, 5, 9, and 17) at normal market value. He wasn’t planning to put the house on the market until April, and they should have been back home by then. (It’s up for sale now, but from what her uncle was telling me about what he’s asking and the condition of the house – including a verrry dated interior and kitchen appliances that are older than me – it’s not likely to sell anytime soon.)

Yup. People in Long Beach and Island Park NY are still displaced. I never went back.

Many ongoing money, insurance and scam problems too.

Sad to say it was easier on people who could never afford a house like me. I lost furniture and books. I bought a new car that I’m still paying for. But replacing a car is nothing close to replacing a home and everything else let alone keepsakes.

I did learn to appreciate all non material things like my life and my dog. That’s my bottom line. Everything else is extra.

They were out for about 7 months, then spent a few more months all on the second floor (it’s a two family house; her sister and her two kids live upstairs, and she and her husband and kids live downstairs [they only had the one kid when the storm hit; she was 3 months old at the time]). They had to redo the whole first floor and lost most of their stuff, but the upstairs was fine. Then finally they were told the raising would be done, and now they’re still waiting for it to be finished. I need to drive by one of these days and see if it looks any different than when I last went by in the spring.

I was in Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina (albeit 60 miles inland in Baton Rouge). We still had a lot of rain and wind damage. Many of my students and colleagues lost everything. The worst part was that the nearest triage hospital was in Baton Rouge and for at least three weeks rescue helicopters flew over my apartment at all hours of the day and night with Katrina victims. Such a helpless feeling… The coverage of the current hurricanes is just unbearable to watch.

    On a light note…

I made a discovery this week.
I googled diuretic foods as I was retaining a bit fluids. Watermelon, celery, parsley and asparagus came up. So I bought the foods and watermelon juice in bottles. I realized I was craving these. So my body knew the answer before I did.

I am happy to report an unexpected outcome that may help others. I rinsed three bunches of flat leaf parsley and sautéed it in olive oil with powdered garlic and a bit of salt and pepper.
I ate it folded into whole wheat pasta. I had a good amount left. I was going to toss it with roasted mini potatoes. But I ended up just eating it with a fork.

Well it turns out that parsley has anti inflammatory properties. Who knew. My arthritis and muscle pain and one locked finger knuckle are all fantastically better.

I plan to eat parsley weekly. My first herbal cure ever.

    • AJ September 9, 2017 / 7:54 pm

Good to know about parsley. I was just diagnosed with arthritis and I’ve been reacting to all the meds. And not in a good way so I’m looking for any herbal/homeopathic remedies I can try. Another interesting fact is nightshade vegetables can make inflammation worse so I’ve been cutting out eggplant, tomatoes, and potatoes out of my diet to see if that helps too.

      • Faye September 9, 2017 / 8:14 pm

Let us know. I’m not a herbal person usually. I’m surprised and happily flexing my fingers.

    • Smartypants September 9, 2017 / 8:11 pm

Faye, what a great result! So glad to hear it.

AJ, there are lots of tasty anti-inflammatory foods, so it can be fun to try them – fish, greens, non-nightshade fruits and veggies (especially red/blue/purple ones like berries), whole grains, olive oil, nuts, etc. I use that as my excuse for splurging on salmon – “It’s anti-inflammatory!”

      • Faye September 9, 2017 / 8:21 pm

Smartypants, I’m allergic to fish. I use tons of olive oil. I eat oatmeal and blueberries. I have cut out all take out and reduced my processed food intake drastically. Salads with raw carrots, cauliflower, sweet pea pods and low sodium garbanzos.

Change in diet for various health reasons and to lose weight. Blood pressure lowered, dropped 17 pounds so far. Still had pain and stiffness until PARSLEY!

        • Murray C September 9, 2017 / 8:59 pm

That’s fantastic, Faye – has to feel really good!

          • Faye September 9, 2017 / 10:48 pm

Thank you Murray! So many other small unexpected benefits that are adding up to better mobility. Will update.

And he made other cat disappear too! Wow!

Hello, Cutetropolitans! Just a quick update on the hurricane situation here in my part of Florida. Things are still calm with a bit of rain, and the heavy winds aren’t expected here until Sunday night. Ani is contentedly eating hay, and Shorty the cat is outdoors roaming. I expect to see him tomorrow and I’ll bring him indoors. He won’t like that, but I’ll have to ignore his yeowling and keep him safe.

    • fkaWaldenPond September 10, 2017 / 12:16 am

Thank you for the update but I suspect with Shorty, if the wind starts to yeowl louder than him he may agree to the temporary safe lodging with vocal complaints, of course. Be safe flowerfanatic, laura and muppet’s folks. I know a few non-Cutropolians with their pets riding it out down there and a few more who have property in storm surge zones. I am fretting and wishing all well. When you can, let us know how you Ani and Shorty are fairing. *godspeed*

Raining here in NCFL. Our plan is to give the hall bath room to our kitty and we grownups will camp out in the hallway. She does not usually talk much, so we hope that she will accept the restricted accommodations.

    • Julie September 10, 2017 / 8:36 am

Thanks for keeping us updated, Mike!

      • Not That Mike The Other Mike September 10, 2017 / 8:52 am

Update: rain coming down heavy now, little wind yet. Shorty hasn’t come back yet, so I assume he is sheltering somewhere. It was a mistake to let him out last night, but we’ll see how it goes.

        • Not That Mike The Other Mike September 10, 2017 / 9:51 am

Update on Shorty: He’s staying in a neighbor’s house. Rain coming in waves, light then heavy, winds still mild.

          • Faye September 10, 2017 / 10:32 am

Thank you for updating. Shorty is smart. He obviously networked.

            • Julie September 10, 2017 / 11:05 am

              Ha ha!

          • Murray C September 10, 2017 / 10:36 am

What a relief. I hope he considers you his primo caretaker, tho’.

          • dubravkamcvmd September 10, 2017 / 1:07 pm

The quick update on Shorty is a relief. I’m so glad he’s safe. And thank you for updating us.

          • Maia September 10, 2017 / 1:27 pm

I’m glad you are all safe.

          • allein ? September 10, 2017 / 4:16 pm

Glad he’s safe, and I hope you’re not near Naples, because I’m watching the Weather Channel’s reporter being an idiot and still talking while standing (or trying to) in the frickin’ eyewall, while the camera person wipes off the lens every 30 seconds. GO INSIDE!

  24. Yadre September 10, 2017 / 6:07 am

Have we actually seen this Shorty guy? 🙂

    • Faye September 10, 2017 / 8:14 am

      Yes. Wears a tux.

      • Murray C September 10, 2017 / 10:37 am
