Now that we’ve eaten too much Thanksgiving food and before we start our holiday shopping, it’s once again Giving Tuesday, a day set aside to give to worthy causes. Last year I picked a basket of charities serving animal welfare, civil liberties, and Internet causes. This year I thought I might throw the topic open to suggestions. Which causes should Cutetropolis give to on Giving Tuesday?

I vote for the Southern Poverty Law Center again this year.
I’ve had some minor unpleasantness with the law that I feel would have turned out in my favor if I had money for a lawyer. It’s sad when the only way to get justice is to pay for it. Definitely a worthy cause.
Are you an outlaw Jendeyan??!!! 😉 I am watching Godless on Netflix (which is really brutal, not for everyone, even me at times) but I am all about wild west lingo these days.
I wouldn’t say I’m an outlaw but I did end up going to jail for a few hours and got put on parole for traffic violations (Not underplaying this). Not a fun time.
Sorry if I came across as insensitive Jendeyan, I wasn’t thinking when I wrote that. I am close to a lawyer that worked in poverty law and have heard and recognize a lot of awful injustices that occur with police and law. I can see it too, I just don’t need to hear stories. Again, sorry.
I’m sorry, too. I didn’t think you were being insensitive at all and didn’t mean to make you feel like you were. We’re good. ^_^
SPLC always gets a vote from me! Sorry to hear of your troubles, Jendeyan. Sounds absolutely rotten. (Which I’m sure is an understatement.)
Yes, me too. Plus animal welfare groups.
I recommend Morris Animal Foundation, ACLU, CAIR, MALDEF, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Internet Archive, Wikimedia Foundation, and Human Rights Campaign
There are still a lot of folks and communities suffering from the effects of all of the natural disasters that we had this year. Puerto Rico is in dire straits. The United Way of Greater Houston is helping out Hurricane Harvey victims. And, the Int’l Red Cross and American Red Cross helps out everyone.
That is true. Puerto Rico is still suffering and Florida and Texas could use some love too.
Animal welfare, please.
I’m especially partial to animal welfare causes, in particular House With a Heart. It’s a “Sanctuary and Forever Home for Senior Dogs and Cats” and I can’t think of a more worthy cause.
Thank you. That sounds like a very good idea. I’ll check it out. I’m old and a large part of why I hesitate to get more animals after mine died is because I’m afraid to leave an elderly animal alone and helpless.
Cat Haven
Yay! I’m so glad we’re doing this.
I’m nominating the ACLU. Or Puerto Rico disaster relief – because they got less aid than their peers, and also got disparaged and treated like ‘not real Americans.’ Thank you Mike!
Amen to both.
I am giving to ACLU, Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood, Naral, Puerto Rico (Lin-Manuel Miranda has a charity he recommended that I am giving to). I want to give to Cat House on the Kings, too, but I need to figure out all of my finances, first.
DCIN Diabetic Cats In Need helps folks with supplies for their cats diagnosed with diabetes. A cause close to my heart since I adopted a diabetic kitty.
I imagine there will be so many great ideas from all the wonderful folks here.
I primarily give to Best Friends Animal Society — 5001 Angel Canyon Rd, Kanab, UT 84741. They take in any kind of animal (including horses, etc.) They’re a no-kill shelter so the animals can live out their natural lives if they’re not adopted. They’ve also started no-kill shelters in several other cities. Check them out. I think you’ll consider them when you’re donating to worthy causes. I also support several other animal groups that support African wildlife protection. Poaching has almost wiped out some African animal species but with additional anti-poaching teams with trained dogs, elephants, rhinos, and lions especially, can recover. And please don’t support trophy hunters. Give the African animals a chance to recover. We don’t want to only be able to see them in zoos!!
Totally off-topic: I have some computer issues with my desktop so i will be away until i find someone to help a poor frustrated monster who is completely stupid with anything computer related 🙁
Sorry for the lack of punctuation both my keyboard and mouse are working randomly (usb driver issue i guess)
i hope to be able to read every now and then from the office or on my phone
(this is just information to anyone interested in monster issues – i always notice when people disappear so i thought to inform my beloved cutetropolitans in advance)
Very thoughtful. Thanks.
Are you able to get on the internet with your computer at all? I’m I.T. so I could remote into your computer and help if you want to arrange it.
Thank you for the bulletin – I hope you’re able to get full access back soon!
Thanks for telling us , Ems – good luck with those computer bugs.
I agree with ACLU and Puerto Rico and an animal fund – I give to Animals Facing Extinction or Defenders of Wildlife from time to time. Best Friends is in our will.
Plus Haiti, which is still recovering from the recent hurricane AND the earthquake several years ago.
Take care Em! We’re here. 🙂
I know this will sound stupid, but have you check to see if you are low battery?
Also, gotta comment on the pic. I think kitty does deserve tips for displaying a fuzzy, slightly disheveled catloaf.
Thanks to all for the recommendations, please keep them coming. I’m going to work on this tomorrow, which means I won’t actually be giving on Giving Tuesday (should have brought this up with you sooner, oops), but I will be making donations.
Let us know what you decide Mike!
Bat World Sanctuary!
World Vision ( Sponsor needy children in foreign lands)
ASPCA
World Wildlife Fund
These are my “monthly” charities. Highly recommended!?
I also give regularly to Naral, planned Parenthood, Propublica, the NRDC, NPR, Emily’s List, Bitch Media, the Trevor Project, Scarleteen, Trans Lifeline … And I volunteer and fundraise for San Francisco Sex Information
I did the bat sanctuary too, hopefully so they’ll get that extra funding.

Also gave in my father’s name for the Pentagon Military Veteren’s Fund. 20 yrs with the 101st.
Bit late for this but I’m putting in a plug for a local cat rescue that does amazing work. Ten Lives Club is one of the largest donor funded cat recues in NY. They have rescued over 1700 cats and kittens just this year. In 17 yrs. they have helped over 30,000 cats! They even take in cats and kittens from other shelters when they get overwhelmed. They currently have a Go Fund Me running to update and add more cages. The goal is 7500 and they’re currently at about 2500. They appreciate even the smallest amount given. Even $10.
