T-Two was waiting for me in the kitchen with the other cats this morning at 6 o’clock, I gave him his usual can food just like the other cats and he ate like the proverbial pig!!
But then my husband got up and T went and sat on the step to the basement, ready to run if we tried to catch him. So we ignored him (picture me whistling innocently as I make toasts) and he came back and ate some more! I think we’ll forgo the pills for today.

On an equally happy note, it’s my husband 64th birthday today so we are going to have lunch with his family and tonight we are going out for diner just the two of us.

I hope everyone has a good weekend and I wish health and happiness to all.

P.S. Not that Maru The Other Maru looks a lot like my Penny who was also found by the side of the road.

      Wonderful news about T-Two!

    • debg February 3, 2018 / 3:43 pm

I’m so happy to hear he’s feeling better!

Ursula’s wounds have almost finished healing; only the spot on top of her head, where the vet cut in to drain the abscess, still has a little scab. That means her fur will start growing back in! Hurrah!

  2. Birdcage February 3, 2018 / 8:26 am

Morning everyone. For the first time since FOREVER, I have a Saturday without any events in it. So excited. I don’t have to GO anywhere, do anything, give any speeches, participate in any conference calls….. Started out this magical day by descaling the coffee machine!!! I’m a wild woman when confronted with some free time.

    • Alice Shortcake February 3, 2018 / 8:35 am

      You little devil, you!

    • AJ February 3, 2018 / 10:15 am

Man, I don’t know if I can handle the excitement! But you go girl!!!!!

    • Murray C February 3, 2018 / 12:30 pm

Ah, Birdcage, I’m in a similar state. I’m changing the bedclothes and defrosting our upright freezer in the basement. hasn’t been done for AGES! and there are inches of thick ice on it – it could take days. I have a little heating element made for defrosting which I may deploy soon. Also I do, really, seriously, need to start taking down my Christmas decorations. (?) It’s a job that stabs me in the solar plexus, makes me so sad. But it really is time, dontcha think???

How does an adorable little kitten like that end up out on the street??? Thank goodness she was found and is thriving.

      • Amyliz February 3, 2018 / 6:08 pm

Murray C. I, too, hate taking down my Christmas decorations, although I did it quite some time ago! πŸ™‚ I do, however, still have a string of Christmas lights up in my living room to combat the winter darkness and dreariness. The good news is the days are now noticeably longer so yay!

        • Murray C February 3, 2018 / 8:13 pm

Some of my lights are on timers and they started out going on around 4:30 and it was dark already! It’s amazing to see how quickly the the days start to change after the solstice! And I keep some lights up all year long – I find them cheerful, too.

  3. dubravkamcvmd February 3, 2018 / 8:38 am

I hope we can keep up with Not That Maru The Other Maru’s development. Seems only right.

    • Maia February 3, 2018 / 2:44 pm

      I second that!

      • Amyliz February 3, 2018 / 6:04 pm

        Third!

  4. Amyliz February 3, 2018 / 8:39 am

    Happy weekend, all!
Maru was an adorable kitten and grew into a beauty!

Gigi, I’m so glad T-Two is on the mend; that must be such a relief for you!
Birdcage, enjoy your weekend of freedom!

No big plans here, but I do need to make a fresh batches of play dough and slime for the kiddos at work to play with next week.

  5. allein ? February 3, 2018 / 9:41 am

Hi everyone. I am sad today. I haven’t mentioned it but my friend’s fiance was in the hospital this past week and he passed away yesterday afternoon. She’s one of my friends from college; she lives several hours away and I haven’t seen her in a few years, and I hadn’t met him yet. They just got engaged last summer. I am heartbroken for her and I just have no words.

    • AJ February 3, 2018 / 10:17 am

That’s so sad, I’m sorry. Hugs to you and your friend.

    • Murray C February 3, 2018 / 12:33 pm

Oh, my heavens, NO! That is so wrong. I am so sorry for her loss, as I’m sure everyone here is.

      • allein ? February 3, 2018 / 12:38 pm

Thanks. I’m just in disbelief. I sent her a message last night, just to let her know I’m thinking of her, and in the back of my mind as I hit send, I had this little thought that she’d think I was crazy because I just misread, or even imagined, the whole thing. They were planning their wedding, just bought a house, he was coming up on retirement as a police officer, and now he’s gone. It’s just so hard to believe.

        • Murray C February 3, 2018 / 12:40 pm

          Crap. Just Crap.

        • Gigi The cat lady February 3, 2018 / 1:47 pm

That is just so sad, just when they were starting their new life together.

    • Maia February 3, 2018 / 2:42 pm

I also send hugs to you and your friend; I know it is hard to do, but try to take extra good care of yourselves at this sad time.

      • allein ? February 3, 2018 / 2:44 pm

I am going to my friend’s game night/superbowl party tomorrow because as much as I feel like holing up in my room I realize that’s not very good for my mental health.

    • Amyliz February 3, 2018 / 6:04 pm

Oh that is such sad news, Allein. So sorry for your friend’s loss.

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike February 3, 2018 / 6:19 pm

I’m so sorry for this tragic loss! Yes, you should get out in the world, as hard as it must feel right now.

      • allein ? February 3, 2018 / 6:44 pm

Thanks. Just thinking about whether I could make it up for the services. It’s Tuesday/Wednesday and it’s a 5 hour drive..so that’d be two days off of work plus a hotel…. One of my friends said she and her husband will go if her parents can get her kids to school and stuff.

        • allein ? February 3, 2018 / 7:42 pm

plus 3-5 inches of snow forecast there for wednesday…

          • Murray C February 3, 2018 / 8:15 pm

IF you can you should go. You will be so sorry if you don’t – the snow might say otherwise and that’s certainly reasonable. But a longstanding friendship is so important and this is such a life-changer! (nb – my opinion)

    • allein ? February 4, 2018 / 11:23 am

These are the flowers we are sending from our little college gang (there are 7 of us):

I was looking at the “send flowers” link from the funeral home’s website and this one reminded me of our college colors (which are blue and gray); I shared it and everyone liked it, so another friend said she would order it today.

Today on my way to my friend’s Superb Owl party I’m going to get a card for her, so I can mail it tomorrow, and we were talking about taking turns sending her stuff in the coming months (cards and whatnot — happy mail). Because the funeral is one thing, but after that is when reality starts to set in. That’s the part I worry about. Her family is only a couple hours away, at least. Small comfort that this didn’t happen when she was living in Arizona with most of her family back in PA.

      • Murray C February 4, 2018 / 11:33 am

That’s a beautiful bouquet, Allein, nicely done. I am curious about the funeral home having a link about flowers – do they use a local florist, I wonder? Many years ago, after having sent my Mom some flowers for Mothers Day via Teleflora, I saw the bouquet and was horrified to see how little one got for one’s money. Since then I’ve been googling local florists in the recipient’s town and using them – much better results.

        • allein ? February 4, 2018 / 11:39 am

Yeah, it says “guaranteed hand delivery by a local florist before [name]’s visitation begins.” All the delivery information is there when you click the order button, if you’re having it sent directly to the funeral, or you can edit it if you want to send it to the home or somewhere else.

  6. AJ February 3, 2018 / 10:30 am

Love this little fluff ball!!! Beyond adorable when little (just look at those big eyes!) and so beautiful when all grown up. And yes, I agree we need to keep up with NTMTOM (Not that Maru, the other Maru). Hmmmm, interesting that the initials come out the same as our illustrious website author of cute.

Semi busy weekend planned. Gotta get in gear to have breakfast then maybe hit the farmer’s market. After that haircut and hockey game tonight. Not sure what’s going to happen to tomorrow but sometime this weekend, I have to do the usual chores. Ick but needs to be done.

Been looking at houses to rent since both me and hubby are getting tired of living in an apartment. The market is really overheated out here, $3000 and up but the houses are 50 years old, small and sometimes updated, sometimes not. We have to decide where we can compromise – location, size, or spend more. I’m finding if we want a newer house that’s a little bigger, we need to look at places further out but then that gets to be a problem for me getting to work since I’m relying on public transit as I don’t drive. I really don’t want to spend an hour commuting but it may come down to that. Ughh, decisions, decisions, decisions. And yes, we looked at buying but if you think rental prices are high, you’d fall over after seeing how much homes cost here. I’m thinking we’re in a bubble and it’s about to burst.

Glad T-Two is feeling better and happy birthday to Gigi’s hubby. Enjoy the festivities. Have a great weekend everyone.

  7. Duckie ? February 3, 2018 / 12:04 pm

I don’t care what the groundhog said yesterday. Next week is apparently the start of a sunny period!
This last week was a round of insanity. After a few hours of deep thinking, I have decided to cut 90% of the added sugar in my diet. Naturally occurring sugars are ok, but nothing else. I have removed all my junk food stashes and am stocking up on healthy fruits and veggies. No baked goods (except whole grain bread) unless I bake it myself. No more pop, milkshakes, chocolate, etc. Any fruit juice will be cut in half with carbonated water. Time to haul out my juicer.
I admit that I’m keeping a small bowl of Smarties for emergencies. Coping with depression sometimes needs a little boost. But I’m restricting myself to two a day, and I can’t save up unused Smarties for another day. I’m also still having sugar in my tea. But I’ve cut that back by a third.
I looked into finishing up my English Major this week, and was given the most irrational piece of info handed to me by our local university yet. My current BA does not allow for a major. If I want an English Major, I have to get another degree! I’m two courses shy of getting my major, and they throw this at me! So I took a deep breath, and decided that I don’t need it. As my favourite English instructor there said: You don’t need another degree. You’re a writer. Get writing!
I’m sorely tempted to write to the president there and tell her what I think of this. Then I will apply for my Bachelor of ??.
Time to pull out my story ideas.
Hubby gets his first days off in three weeks starting Tuesday. It’s our anniversary on Wednesday, and he has decided that we are going to have fun. I got a “birthday card” from the local casino, offering me ten dollars worth of free play. So we will go to the casino and blow ten whole dollars, and then he’s taking me out for lunch. Then we’ll go home and do nothing. I’ll make sure we have plenty of things to eat, and we will spend the day nibbling on fruits, veggies, cold cuts and cheese, and read and watch TV. No chores. Looking forward to it.
Hubby’s current work contract finishes up at the end of the month. I’m waiting to see who will make the first move/best offer: current employer, since hubby has proven himself more reliable than all other employees, or landscaping company he worked with last year, since they will be starting up soon and hubby has proven himself more reliable than all other employees. This could be fun.
    194 lbs.
Wishing everyone a great week to come.

Feathered hugs to Allein and your friend.
    Happy birthday, Mr. Gigi.

    • allein ? February 3, 2018 / 12:20 pm

      Thanks, Duckie πŸ™‚

      —————
I’ve been trying to cut down on the sugar in my tea, so I started buying sugar in the raw packets, and mostly limiting to one packet per cup (sometimes two).

    • Maia February 3, 2018 / 2:51 pm

I hope that your week ahead is fabulous, Duckie. πŸ™‚

    • Murray C February 3, 2018 / 4:40 pm

Duckie, it sounds like you are a woman on the GO! Good for you – yes, write – as a writer that’s what you need to do – if the opportunity for a degree comes up, all well and good, but you have life experience and that counts more than apiece of paper.

    • Amyliz February 3, 2018 / 6:12 pm

Good for you, Duckie, on everything! I cut way back on sugar in my diet a few years ago, just for general health. Have to admit, I missed it at first but now I rarely crave sweets. (Notice I didn’t say never, just rarely! :D) Anyway, best of luck to you in all your undertakings and keep us posted!

  8. Alice Shortcake February 3, 2018 / 12:07 pm

I made a couple of interesting family-tree related discoveries this week. A Google search turned up a photo of Mr John Tordoff (1798-1870), tea dealer and my third cousin five times removed; and it turns out that Pateley Bridge, a small Yorkshire town where my uncle lived in the 1970s, was the home of our family from the 18th to the late 19th centuries.

  9. Murray C February 3, 2018 / 12:39 pm

That reminds me of an amazing coincidence my husband just discovered. He has some rowing friends, a fairly notable family in Philadelphia who have a cousin in Wales. This cousin lives in a house (they have names rather than addresses and I can’t remember the name – it’s Welsh!) and it turns out to be the very house that my husband was born in. I find that extraordinary!

And, yes, GiGi, wonderful news about T-Two and Happy Birthday to the Hubby!

  10. Duckie ? February 3, 2018 / 1:21 pm

Isn’t that Marc Anthony’s kitten? Peering out of a dark hiding place, all you can see are the eyes?

  11. debg February 3, 2018 / 3:53 pm

Love this little cutiepie and her wild hair!

So sorry for those of you hurting, grieving, ailing, and/or dealing with sick pets. Hugs and healing thoughts from Colorado. Wish I could do more to make things better. And congrats to all who are celebrating!

I’ve been late to the Caturday open thread party lately because of freelance work. Next week, no matter what, I’ll come to Cutetropolis before I start my herculean labors.

My 3rd week at the new job has just ended, and I’ve gotten the first paycheck since my severance in December. It’s absurdly exciting. This is money I don’t have to pay back or accept as a gift. It’s completely guilt-free.

They’re giving me more responsibilities at work already. In week 2, I asked for another project; this week, they offered me something new. While I’m leery of jinxing everything, it does seem like they’ll want me around for the long term. My team members and I seem to be on the same wavelength as far as my project, and since the team includes one of the company’s major decision-makers, that’s all great.

Now back to work! Hugs to you all.

    • Murray C February 3, 2018 / 4:42 pm

Excellent, Debg, I’m so pleased for you. And your pusscat is doing well? (Usual, right??? – I get confused!)

      • debg February 3, 2018 / 4:57 pm

Ursie is doing GREAT. She’s back to her normal rather grouchy-old-lady self. Like Clementine, she just looks a little funny in her Frankenkitty makeup.

      • Murray C February 3, 2018 / 8:16 pm

That was supposed to say “Ursula” not “usual”!!! Crap.

We’ll have to post pictures – not yet as far as Clemmie goes – it’s a bit off-putting at the moment.

  12. Blue Footed Booby February 3, 2018 / 8:38 pm

As I roved out on a bright May morning
To view the meadows and flowers gay
Whom should I spy but my own true lover
As she sat under yon willow tree

I took off my hat and I did salute her
I did salute her most courageously
When she turned around well the tears fell from her
Sayin’ “False young man, you have deluded me

A diamond ring I owned I gave you
A diamond ring to wear on your right hand
But the vows you made, love, you went and broke them
And married the lassie that had the land”

“If I’d married the lassie that had the land, my love
It’s that I’ll rue till the day I die
When misfortune falls sure no man can shun it
    I was blindfolded I’ll ne’er deny”

Now at nights when I go to my bed of slumber
The thoughts of my true love run in my mind
When I turned around to embrace my darling
Instead of gold sure it’s brass I find

And I wish the Queen would call home her army
From the West Indies, Amerikay and Spain
And every man to his wedded woman
In hopes that you and I will meet again.

    • Murray C February 3, 2018 / 8:55 pm

I don’t know this ballad – is it a Child? I know things that might be considered to have similar roots. (I’m no scholar about this stuff, just know a lot of songs)

    • fkaWaldenPond February 4, 2018 / 12:47 am

Ahhh!!! Good on you Booby! It reads you are in on your song and cups– sla’inte. I know you lean more Scottish but I am sure you understand.
