The Sound of Silence

In the world of modern classical music, the most innovative — and contentious — piece is 4’33” by composer John Cage. This three-movement work, composed in 1952, calls for the pianist to sit quietly at the keyboard for four minutes and thirty-three seconds, raising challenging questions for the listener, such as What are the limits of what we call music? Wait, am I going deaf? and Can I get my money back? Here now to perform the opening movement is pianist Carmen the Golden.

Ah, but which 11 seconds of the original piece are excerpted here?

    Discuss.

    Such a talented musician!

Also, that’s what I did when my alarm went off this morning. I took a vacation day today. After the last couple weeks I just needed a day off. I plan to go to the outlet mall and check out the Fossil store and see if I can find a new bag. I have birthday and Christmas cash stashed away so I’m going to splurge a little. I hope.

Good for you, Allein! Everyone needs a mental health day now and then. I, too, stayed home today. Went to school this morning, my boss took one look at me and sent me home. I’ve been fighting the unks since Monday (when I had a fever). I keep telling myself that my health is more important than today’s grading conference…

Yeah; after the past week+ worrying about my friend, and then her fiance’s funeral was on Wednesday (I went out to my car for a little bit at the time it started; listened to the rain and cried for her). Wednesday afternoon I was just drained and asked my boss if it was too late to put in for a vacation day today. He was fine with it (he’s cool that way).

Two of my friends made it up for the funeral. They got there before the storm the night before, but said the roads were pretty bad on Wednesday (especially the one heading east going home; the other was heading south so she drove out of it after a couple hours). They both made it home safely, though. And my friend’s mom is staying with her for the next few weeks, at least, so that’s good.

I’m sure your friend knows you were with her in spirit and still are. Have a nice, relaxing weekend, Allein and all Cutetropolitans!

That’s exactly what my one friend who did go said when we were discussing whether we’d be able to make it up there.

Such a shock. For you all.

      Oooooh!. I likey Fossil bags.

I have a green Fossil wallet that is a little grubby looking but is still structurally just about perfect. It’s gotta be going on 10 years old. I also have a Fossil watch that spent a few months in our lost and found at the bookstore before I cleaned out the drawer and claimed it. Similar watches on their website at the time suggested a retail price of around $65-85 (I later saw it in their refurbished bin at the outlet store for about $35) and for the price of a new battery, removing a couple links and fixing the loose clasp it was mine (and I believe the jewelry store actually only charged me for the battery, so, like 8 bucks).

The bag I’m using now is okay (just about perfect for what I carry every day without room to accumulate more stuff) except the leather on the strap started to crack within a few months and now looks pretty bad (and sometimes catches on sweaters). I decided I’m willing to pay a little more and get something better quality next time.

Pocketbook shopping has always been a strange experience for me. I usually have one bag that I use all year round. I don’t go out enough to need to match outfits or have a dressy bag. So I revert to my college/commuting days with a bit of go bag mentality and get a big rucksack type thing with many pockets etc.

Well that works fine until you are older and thrown off balance easily. So I just purchased what I call a real pocketbook and a tote. Both black. Stylish. Like a grown up. At 66 years old. Huge markdowns from Zulilly.

Yeah, I use the same bag all the time; it’s not too big and it’s a neutral color (gray, in this case). I have a messenger-type bag for work that holds my lunch bag, a book, a slim plastic case that holds any papers or whatever I might want to bring to or from work, and I keep an umbrella in the water bottle pocket on the side (though the elastic on that is dying so it falls out a lot; gotta figure something out there).

    That is brilliant, and profound.

This should be nominated for the Turner Prize.

Reminds of one of my favorite lines from “Arrested Development:”

They let us leave during the second hour of silent prayer.

Now that’s what I call restful music! (yawn … zzzzzzzzz)

Such a soothing rendition. Knocked me right out. I tip my pillow to the performer.
