I love most of the links, especially the foxes and the dog and butterfly, so I won’t vote the whole post down.

But the pups in food really upsets me. I can’t explain it, but I find it horrifying, not cute. Sorry to nuff on anyone else’s parade. I know we all have our own thing.

I commented without seeing your comment. I really don’t understand.

It’s not just you. Dogs In Food is very unsettling and anxious-making for me, too. Like, a visceral reaction in my chest. I can’t explain why, either…

Loved some of the other links though, Mike.

I’ll admit I have mixed feelings about that one. Cute faces, and I can appreciate the photoshop skill but…

I wonder how many complaints the newspaper got…

      • dubravkamcvmd July 30, 2018 / 11:19 am

I really wish I could understand the problem. Not a clue.

It’s okay, DUBRAVKAMCVMD, people have different sensitivities, and sometimes they’re hard to explain, even to oneself. My reaction was immediate, visceral, and very strong—and it hasn’t dissipated. But there’s certainly no reason for you to feel the same way!

I love the pups in food! Amazing pictures. I could plaster my walls with them.

  3. michael (no, not him) July 30, 2018 / 8:40 am

You see a beautiful butterfly flutter by. You dog sees something crawling on her.

    • AJ July 30, 2018 / 9:26 am

Exactly, another nuffer here but on that video. It irked me that you’re laughing while it looks like your dog is obviously not happy – ears back and hunching down – and you don’t do anything about it?? How about you put the phone down and get that thing off her.

Otherwise the links are really cute or interesting. I really should subscribe to Atlas Obscura but I don’t, otherwise I’d do nothing but click around on their site because all their articles are just fascinating. The foxes just cracked me, I really wonder what’s going through their brain to have them bring papers and phone books to this person. I’m kinda ambivilant about the dogs in foods pictures, some of them sorta cute in a weird way but others just skeev me out, those disembodied heads just randomly floating there. Bleah.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. Some of the reactions weren’t what I was expecting, but they are very reasonable and I will try to remember them when writing future posts. I’m always grateful when people share their honest feelings about the content; please keep doing that.

I loved the butterfly on the dog’s face. She was puzzled and interested and not in any great distress, not being harmed, and she was bright and curious when the butterfly flew off. Her human was reassuring her.

Her attempts to *smell* it were hysterical. I was so glad to have that as part of my morning.

And: I can appreciate silly photoshopped images of dogs in photos of food as a joke without feeling any hint of upset about places where dogs are eaten, any more than the adorable Dachshunds in hot dog bun suits. I didn’t click on the link because of time, not upset. I usually only follow one or two of the daily links and I preferred to watch the Husky puzzled by the butterfly.

    • allein ? July 30, 2018 / 11:14 am

I think the issue with the food is maybe the photoshopping is a little too good? A little Yorkie head among the meatballs is a tad disconcerting.

      • Ricky's Mom July 30, 2018 / 11:47 am

That may be it, Allein. Certainly doxies running around in hot-dog bun costumes don’t have the same effect on me, nor does calling a kitten wrapped in a towel a “purrito.” For that matter, neither does saying “I want to pop that little morsel in my mouf.” There’s a distancing in those that I don’t feel regarding these pictures.

Artistically I’m fascinated by Dogs In Food. They are a bit creepy though. Maybe the pics work as reverse psychology. As in, “how could you eat that!”

The pigeon photos are amazing as no one had seen any part of the Earth from above before.

I think Husky was bemused by the butterfly. I wonder about the turtle as that could get annoying after awhile.

    Very foxy foxes.

I don’t get the foxes. Must be some sort of reasoning in between those pointy ears of theirs.

NTMTOM et al., have we ever had a full-blown commentroversy here like at the old ranch (pasickie, cats in racks, etc)? I always enjoyed sitting back with a bowl of popcorn and watching the… um… “fur fly.”

Btw, I was going through my email account and deleted literally thousands of old messages. Among them were five years of the CO daily dose of cute… all the links no longer valid 🙁

    • Dana July 30, 2018 / 4:40 pm

I don’t recall any commentroversy on this site but I’m sure I haven’t read every comment. It seems like everyone here can share their opinions freely, is courteous to everyone else, and can (without needing to say so) agree to disagree, respectfully. It’s one of the things I like about this site, along with all of the adorable animals! I’m all for “fur flying” as long as that refers to a photo or a video of a kitty or a doggo or some other fluff-wrapped creature happily jumping through the air. Just my preference. ?

      • N. Fritz July 30, 2018 / 6:44 pm

You’re right, Dana, we all seem pretty tolerant of each others’ sensitivities. I guess that’s why I enjoy this community so much!

The dog food images make me think about the uncanny valley. If these pics were cartoons, not many of us would find them unsettling, I suppose. The banana dog is really creepy, and I really can stand creepy stuff, believe me.

    • Diane in Los Angeles July 30, 2018 / 8:02 pm

I think you’ve nailed it. Now that I look through more of them, I see that most aren’t as cute as the bulldog in the dumpling, or the Frenchie in the little bread roll. Uncanny valley territory. Still not upsetting, but not really cute or appealing either.

This is a really insightful thread! I may use it in the fall as an example to my students about civil discourse and supporting one’s opinion. Cutetropolitans rock!!!

I didn’t look at the links, but I can see how dogs in food might be disturbing to some. I don’t think it would bother me, knowing it was photoshopped and that no one was really going to eat them. I did see the fox newspaper deliverers on Dodo the other day. I wonder why they chose to steal newspapers, and deliver them all to one person’s yard. They must have a reason.
I spent the last 2 days at the hospital with my brother. He can feel when a seizure is coming on, so we went to the ER yesterday. They gave him ativan, the auras, and the twitches stopped. They ran some tests and determined his anti seizure med level was good and sent him home. Around 1pm today I got a call from the nurse saying he was in the ER again, this time he had a seizure at home, fell, hit his face on the toilet (shattering the tank into several pieces). He was found by the maintenance man who came to see why the downstairs apartment was flooding. He couldn’t walk, and his speech was worse than it usually is. The maintenance man called an ambulance. His nose is messed up, a scrape on his forehead, and a concussion. He has been admitted, so they can see if the leg weakness, extra tremors, and speech issues are caused by the concussion, or have some other cause. It’s been a long day.

    • debg July 30, 2018 / 10:03 pm

Patty, so sorry about your brother’s injuries. You’ve mentioned that he can sense a seizure, and it’s great that this time he got the help he needed in the ER. I wish they’d been able to prevent the most recent one, though.

    • dubravkamcvmd July 31, 2018 / 8:36 am

Oh how awful. What a miserable experience. He is brave to live alone.

    • Patty July 31, 2018 / 3:45 pm

He is doing much better today. His speech is back to his normal slurring, his hands are not as jerky. His legs are still really weak, and he can’t stand up for more than a few seconds. They are getting him a physical therapist in the hopes that will help. He cannot go home until he can walk by himself again. He does not want to go to a nursing home, so he will cooperate with the therapist. At least one more day in the hospital for him.

  12. debg July 30, 2018 / 10:05 pm

I peeked at the dogs in food link, then quickly shut it down–I’m a vegetarian for a reason! Loved all the other linkies, and agree that the beautiful husky wasn’t so much upset about the butterfly as curious. I would have laughed too.

  13. sugitomo July 30, 2018 / 11:03 pm

Aww, I thought the husky video was so cute. The butterfly was clearly not harming him, but he did seem so confused. He was finally brave enough to paw it off though — what a learning experience for him!

The dogs in food is just freaky and weird. It doesn’t necessarily distress me, but it is like random dog parts and dog heads… :/

  14. Michael July 31, 2018 / 3:32 am

If the photos didn’t prove it, I wouldn’t believe a pigeon could fly with that huge clunky thing attached to him. First, the size (it didn’t get in the way of his wings flapping??) but mostly the weight. Aluminum is lighter than steel, but lots heavier than the plastic we’d use today. Pigeons have more load-carrying capacity than I expected.

About the dog and the butterfly, how can anyone object? Unless the human was preventing the dog from doing something about it, how was this different than a butterfly landing on the dog when no human was around? If the dog wanted rid of it, he’d just shake his head. It’s not the human’s problem to handle something the dog could obviously handle himself if he wanted. Just watch and enjoy.
