Alternate Animal Anatomy

What are these parts really called? Twitter’s on it

Pay attention, class, because this will be on the final. In keeping with their educational mission, a number of zoos have joined together to “unscience” cute animals.

For instance, did you know that horns are really called “pokey nubbins”? You do now!

And of course, all baby animals have “teefies.” We should know that.

Here are some otter anatomy terms you otter know.

And while every hippo has a head, only Fiona has a “crown holder.”

I like how Fiona has her own anatomy, not just generic hippo.

Also love the “friend” label on the other goat.

      a crown holder?

I’d expect nothing else of a princess.

I like “Pokey Nubbins” – it’d be a great name for a character in a novel.

It’s a spinoff of “Peaky Blinders.”

With less violence, I presume? (I had to look it up – nasty bunch!)

I always thought the proper dental term was “toofies”. I stand corrected.

    • allein ? January 29, 2019 / 2:25 pm

      I’ve believe both are correct.

That’s a prehensile tail porcupine! I love those little guys!

      To the point indeed!

    Oh, I love this!
And, we need someone to do one for Maru. ?

    • birdlady26 January 29, 2019 / 3:39 pm

Andrew – we need a Maru picture.

I think ‘Hana radar’ would be appropriate for Maru’s swishy tail.

    I love these!?????

I did enjoy High School biology but had it been like this, I probably would have received an A+. I will still say, toofies. I like the No Boop Zone and Boop Zone, that’s an easy one. I’m trying to figure out what the leetle porkypine bebeh is holding. Is that its tongue or what?

    • Ricky's Mom January 29, 2019 / 5:59 pm

That was my first thought, but I wonder if it isn’t actually the palm of its hand. What do you think?

      • Smartypants January 29, 2019 / 6:32 pm

Yes, looks to me like the palm of his right hand. It’s tricky because there is a dot of light right there too, but I think it’s in the background.

        • Duckie ? January 29, 2019 / 8:40 pm

Nonono! It’s his hand, holding a carrot stick!

          • 6rabbits January 30, 2019 / 9:43 am

Yep, enlarging the picture helps. Bottom pale part is hand, but the little orange nubbin by his mouth has got to be carrot!

The unscientific names for all these parts are much more descriptive and accurate than the dry, scientific names!

  7. Smartypants January 29, 2019 / 5:26 pm

“Camera spotters” – that’s our girl!

    • Alice Shortcake January 29, 2019 / 5:56 pm

I would suggest ‘thigh soft-cronschers’ rather than ‘cabbage crushers’.

      • Ricky's Mom January 29, 2019 / 6:01 pm

Yes, I agree. But I admit to preferring the alternate spelling, with an initial k: kronschers. πŸ™‚

        • Smartypants January 29, 2019 / 6:29 pm

Yes, and some type of sonar that lets her spot couples who are about to pop the question.

      • debg January 29, 2019 / 8:11 pm

Yes please. The kronsche heard round the world!

Truer words were never spoken (err, written): “Poo flinger” for the hippo tail.

    • Alice Shortcake January 30, 2019 / 7:35 am

Erm…yes. Go to Youtube to see examples of the poo flinger in action, or better still, don’t.

      • Smartypants January 30, 2019 / 9:29 pm

Sure ought to keep any predators at bay!
