(I’m not sure what’s going on, but these strange creatures keep trying flag me down. They look like a fluffy cross between an owl and a rabbit, and they just stand there with these silly grins on their faces.)

I hate to admit it but I don’t get the joke. What’s a “fluffy cross between an owl and a rabbit”?? 😏
The whole thing is a reference to My Neighbor Totoro, which prominently features a catbus. It’s an animated movie from the same people who did Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Grave of the Fireflies.
I’m sorry, I should have cleared that up. As BFB said, it’s a reference to the film My Neighbor Totoro, which is much beloved by fans of Japanese animation. Here’s the catbus and Totoro:
So I’m not losing my mind after all, just not current on my cultural references. 😀
A big thank you to BFB and Mike for the clarification as I haven’t heard about Totoro before. (I remember someone referenced it in the comments about 2 years ago, but I did not google it then)
But tbh what was once seen cannot be unseen.
The catbus with the huge white teeth and the reflector eyes and that perverted looking bunny-being with that crazy grin… I don’t know I can watch any horror movie any time of the day, but now it is about time to grab a plushie or a cat to sleep with because these Totoro characters look weird and scary to me.
It’s actually a beloved children’s classic. Here’s a much cuter picture of a big and small totoro.
This one is indeed cute, thanks Jendeyan.
The white one reminds me a bit of Moomins who are the cutest of the cute.
I’ve always wondered what a ride in the catbus would be like. Probably a bit bumpy, but the seats would be fluffy and soft!
