Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to Caturday, Cutetropolitans! Don’t be alarmed if the chat room seems bigger on the inside than the outside. We needed the extra space to show off this masterpiece by reader Muppet2171, who writes:

I made a Doctor Who scarf for a friend. Stretched it out to see about how long it ended up being (about 14 feet-ish). Teller is trying to decide the best place to sit on it.

Where’s the sonic screwdriver?ill bet Teller knows!

I keep a large pot in the garden with catnip in it (it’s blooming right now!) for Lily. She loves her ‘nip!

    • dubravkamcvmd May 30, 2020 / 11:49 am

I love how she holds it up between her paws. She may be going for an opposable thumbs workaround.

Amazing!! Standing ovation for the scarf and its maker. And two beautiful kitties too! What a great way to start a Sat.

I’ve always wanted to make the Dr Who scarf but quickly realized how much effort it would take and that I have absolutely no crafty bone in my body. Over the years I’ve made attempts to start one project or another and they gone no where. In fact I just packed up all my yarn and looms and knitting machines and I’m sending them to my niece so hopefully it will occupy her son this summer. She’s getting a little tired of hearing there’s nothing to do.

Run a few errands and maybe even go to the shopping mall this weekend. And I have an appt with my regular hair stylist in a few weeks, yippee!! It’s like the world is finally waking back up. Have a great weekend everyone.

I recently got hooked on round loom knitting (see what I did there?). As yet I’m still at the “hats and tube socks” stage but I’m about to diversify into making panels for a patchwork blanket/bedspread.

In other news, I may have mentioned that due to the layout of my small terraced house it’s possible to leap, gazelle-like, over the narrow stairs between the front and back bedrooms. Yesterday morning I misjudged the distance and fell heavily, injuring my left foot. It swelled so badly I spent most of this morning in A&E being examined and X-rayed, but fortunately it turned out to be a bad sprain and not a broken bone. When I explained the circumstances to the nurse I swear I could almost hear her thinking “How old are you, seven?”

      • Emsthemonster May 30, 2020 / 1:52 pm

I hope you get well soon, Alice. Yes, I would have totally done the leap too 🙂

        • Dulcie May 30, 2020 / 3:14 pm

We all have a bit of kid in us Alice. No matter the age. I have fond memories of squatting on my haunches in the garden, picking handfuls of something, then STANDING UP.
          Sigh.
Anyway! Just keep it elevated and all should be well!

          • Faye May 30, 2020 / 10:10 pm

Hahahahaha. I remember being able to bend over to tie my shoelaces. Nope. Not anymore.

            • Dulcie May 30, 2020 / 10:32 pm

Sigh… putting my socks on by just lifting my foot without leaning on anything…

              • Faye May 31, 2020 / 10:05 am

Hahahahaha. No way ever for me! I couldn’t even hook my bra in the back.

      • AJ May 30, 2020 / 2:53 pm

I’ve tried the round loom and also a knitting machine but I’m just hopeless with anything like that. So, all that stuff is on its way to a new home. Now I can concentrate on making photo collages from my last two vacations and finally get them up on the wall. And poor you with that fall! I would have done the exact same thing, why take two or three steps when one leap will get you there faster.

      • Kar May 30, 2020 / 7:55 pm

        Ouch!!! Hope you’re feeling better

  3. Dulcie May 30, 2020 / 9:38 am

Ha ha …”the master thread”… exactly what a cat would think to look for! 🤣

  4. allein 🐾 May 30, 2020 / 10:43 am

    This is amazing.

I woke up a little while ago (just after 10) with a headache because I was up too late and slept too late and it is 83 degrees in my house! Just turned on the air and it feels so good. I should have changed the filter first but I’ll do it in a little bit when it stops running. High 82 today but supposed to be in the low 70s next week, I think. According to my Chromecast it’s 74 right now.

I went grocery shopping on Thursday so I have carrots and peppers and cucumbers to clean and cut up today, and yams that I’m going to mash and chicken tenderloins to cook (couldn’t get organic but they had plenty of regular chicken). Now that I have regular cocoa (could only get Hershey’s but it’ll do) I might make brownies and test out a variation on my recipe…

I finally opened my Target packages that came last week, too. I ordered four boxes of hot cocoa mix but I only got three. Went to the order invoice page and I was, indeed, charged for four. So I clicked the “report an issue” button and it lists all the items in the order and you click a check box next to the one with the issue, then a drop-down box comes up with options for what the issue is. I chose missing item, and it assumes the full quantity is missing with no way to change it, as far as I could see. You can choose to have the missing item sent or just get a refund; I chose the latter. The next screen has a box you can type notes in, so I explained I was only looking for a refund for one box, not all four, but the confirmation email I got says my refund is being processed for the cost of four, so I guess unless someone actually reads the note and adjusts it, I’ve got three free boxes of hot cocoa mix. (When it is 83 degrees in my house…🥵)

I had a dream this morning that I was sitting on my couch next to my window (a couch and window that do not exist in reality, mind you) looking out at a lovely grassy walking path (which also does not exist), and some deer passed by, and a bear, and some people, and one lady with a puppy that she passed up to me through the window to play with. It was a good dream.

    • Emsthemonster May 30, 2020 / 2:36 pm

“it is 83 degrees in my house” I still need to switch on the heating almost every evening, it is quite cold and windy here. I cannot remember a year when I had to use heating after the middle of April.

      • allein 🐾 May 30, 2020 / 4:42 pm

It was actually 85 when I looked last night. It’s been a relatively cool spring so far, for the most part, though. (It’s 82 outside, now. My AC was set to 76 but after it initially cooled down I bumped it up to 78 so it’s not running so much. Also have ceiling fans going in the living room and bedroom. My ‘office’ ceiling fan doesn’t work anymore, but I have a small tabletop fan in there.Which is fine since that fan seems to be a bit flimsier than the others and is kind of noisy.)

    • AJ May 30, 2020 / 2:57 pm

That is a little warm, whoo, and makes having a headache even worse. Every summer I’m eternally grateful for whoever figured out how to do central A/C. And that dream sounds loverly.

  5. debg May 30, 2020 / 10:43 am

Beautiful work, Muppet! The scarf is great and clearly Teller approves.

Jan, your beautiful girl brightens up my world too. Thanks.

Since I spent last weekend working on my stairwell–away from kitties!–I’m going to spend this weekend taking it easy. I’ve got 4 bobbins of gorgeous handspun singles to chain-ply, plus 3 more braids of fiber to spin and ply before I can start the sweater. It’s a great weekend to make yarn.

    Hugs to you all.

  6. Duckie 🐥 May 30, 2020 / 11:52 am

Peeps, I am not doing very well.
I’ve had canker sores all month, and they’ve started to ulcerate. I’m being treated (and I think I prefer the ulcers), but now the doctors are thinking that this might mean I’m relapsing.

    • 6rabbits May 30, 2020 / 12:13 pm

O my god NO!!!😩 You are in my prayers Duckie!🙏🏻

    • allein 🐾 May 30, 2020 / 12:27 pm

      🙁 Sending virtual hugs.

    • Emsthemonster May 30, 2020 / 1:54 pm

I seriously hope it is just something temporary and you will get better soon! Sending comforting virtual hugs!

      • Dulcie May 30, 2020 / 2:41 pm

Oh my dear Duckie. How uncomfortable for you!! Big hugs to you ❤️ and like Ems said… hope it is just a temporary glitch.

    • Debg May 30, 2020 / 2:33 pm

So sorry, Duckie. We’re crossing our paws for you here.

    • AJ May 30, 2020 / 3:58 pm

That’s not that we wanted to hear. So sorry you’re going through this. Sending healing thoughts your way.

    • Faye May 30, 2020 / 4:38 pm

Awww Duckie. I’m sorry you received bad news. Let us know what the doctors plan to do for you.

    • dubravkamcvmd May 30, 2020 / 4:39 pm

Oh no. I’m so sorry. I hope the question of whether or not you’re relapsing can be resolved quickly. I find uncertainty torturous.

    • charsicat May 30, 2020 / 5:38 pm

Aw, Duckie – that sounds very painful. I hope they can find a treatment that doesn’t make it seem worse than it already is. Four cats here are sending you purrs and paw pats of comfort.

    • Kar May 30, 2020 / 7:53 pm

      hoping that you’re feeling better.

  7. 6rabbits May 30, 2020 / 12:15 pm

Congrats! Muppet! That is quite a scarf😳 I crochet slowly and that would have taken me a looong time. Kudos!👍🏼

  8. allein 🐾 May 30, 2020 / 1:30 pm

So they said Cats was the last free Andrew Lloyd Webber show but I just looked at the page and it looks like they’re doing non-Webber shows, now. They have Hairspray this weekend. (It’s the live show with Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Hudson, and Ariana Grande, among others.) Guess I know what I’ll be doing tonight (even though I’ve seen it before).

    • JenDeyan May 31, 2020 / 1:09 pm

Thanks for the heads up about Cats. I really enjoyed it. I saw Hairspray Live when they originally aired it and it was quite good so I think you’ll have a wonderful time.

      • allein 🐾 May 31, 2020 / 1:33 pm

I saw it, then, too. I didn’t end up watching last night because I went to my parents’ and didn’t get home until 9:00. Might watch this afternoon, but tonight is the season finale of Killing Eve so I’ll be watching that. And I have stuff I should be doing.

        • Faye May 31, 2020 / 8:17 pm

Akk. Allein. I forgot all about the finale. I’m a big fan of the whole cast. Luckily I’m taping it. IMHO it’s taken too long to get Eve and Villanelle together!

  9. Emsthemonster May 30, 2020 / 2:31 pm

Things aren’t going very well in the monster household.
Unfortunately home office ended for me 🙁

I am preparing for the incoming brother drama, I am checking my possibilities of escaping if needed but the prospects aren’t very bright.
The next few years are going to be extremely difficult both emotionally and financially. He has caused me so much stress this week that I lost a lot of weight. On Monday I wore size 8 clothes that were almost tight, now it is quite loose size 6.

    • Debg May 30, 2020 / 2:35 pm

So sorry, Ems. I know you just recently lost some people important to you. The kitties send healing purrs and I’m putting in hugs too.

      • Emsthemonster May 30, 2020 / 2:42 pm

Thank you, Debg. It is very much appreciated.

    • Dulcie May 30, 2020 / 2:44 pm

This sounds like a truly nightmarish situation for you. Particularly distressing if you can’t escape anywhere. Take care of yourself the best you can Ems.

      • Emsthemonster May 30, 2020 / 3:09 pm

Thank you, Dulcie. I will do my best. This site is really a shelter to all of us.

    • dubravkamcvmd May 30, 2020 / 4:42 pm

I’m so sorry. I hope you can find some calm and serenity within yourself to withstand what you dread.

    • Faye May 30, 2020 / 4:42 pm

Ems have a plan. Speak up right at the beginning about boundaries and rules.

    • Kar May 30, 2020 / 9:33 pm

Sibling drama is tough. I sympathize.

      Hippo problems.

Hope things get better, Duckie and Ems!

Magnificent cat and scarf! Interesting afternoon, here. I went out to my table with container plants (not bending over much) and there was a baby bird emitting cute sounds. Its parents were fussing around, so I went inside. I went out later and more birds were fussing and swooping! I chased off the raccoon that was coming around the house. Even later the silly birdlet was hopping around the top of an old watering can. A parent came and spoke to it, and then I couldn’t see it. Had to go out again. It was not in the can, thank dog. I heard it later, farther away from the house. It looks like it is about ready to fly. I hope it hurries up! I’m not sure I can take the drama!

  12. Kar May 30, 2020 / 8:06 pm

Hoping that tonight is calmer than last night. they were rioting/looting a little under a mile from my house until 4am when they called in the National Guard.

Hope that you all have peaceful nights.

    • Dulcie May 30, 2020 / 8:24 pm

Oh Kar that’s awful!! So scary. And so sad on so many levels. Stay safe.

      • Kar May 30, 2020 / 9:36 pm

thank you. I get while people are upset, but they don’t seem to understand that some of their actions [looting stores, setting police cars on fire, burning down businesses ] make things worse.

thankfully we’ve had no fatalities that i know of but know that’s not the case in other cities.

        Stay safe everybody!!

        • allein 🐾 May 30, 2020 / 9:51 pm

I was just watching some videos of the protests near the White House. This year just get more and more crazy. Having a hard time wrapping my head around it all.

    • Emsthemonster May 31, 2020 / 6:55 am

This sounds very scary, I hope rioting stops soon.

  13. allein 🐾 May 30, 2020 / 9:47 pm

Just came back from my parents’. My mom asked if I wanted meatloaf so I went over and we ate out on the deck. It was really nice out, saw some blue jays on the fence, and a black and white kitty poked his head around the side of the house and said hi.

So….if you had an unopened jar of spaghetti sauce that was left in the car for two days, and was still noticeably warm from the experience when taken out at 9pm on the second day…would you think that would do anything bad to the contents? Or would it be okay since it’s still sealed? Asking for a friend. 😉

    • Faye May 30, 2020 / 10:15 pm

Nope. Don’t even open it. Toss.

    • Kar May 30, 2020 / 10:27 pm

The jar is warm? That’s not good. Something’s building inside and I don’t think it’s confetti.

      • allein 🐾 May 30, 2020 / 10:33 pm

It was sitting on the back seat of a car in the sun for two days. The other stuff in the bag (not food, but metal cans) was also still warm.

On the up side, the sauce was something my uncle had that he wasn’t going to use so my mom took it but they weren’t going to use it so she asked if I wanted it. So while I hate to waste it, it’s not like I spent money on it.

  14. Faye May 30, 2020 / 10:27 pm

Wow on scarf. And fresh nip.

Spent the day in air conditioning while napping and bill paying.

I’m a news junkie so watched my country launch to astronauts from our own soil again while cities burn across the land. So horrific to watch a man murdered and then anarchists use his death as an excuse for destruction. And no national leadership.

Thank goodness for CUTEtropolis. A true refuge.

  15. AJ May 31, 2020 / 10:13 am

While reading all the comments about the current situation in the US, a very appropriate song came on the radio “So You Say You Want a Revolution” by The Beatles. It’s like we’ve been down this path before, it just seems like things are repeating themselves. First we had the relatively decent years under Reagan (Sorta like the post war prosperous years) then slowly dissatisfaction has been building and now it reminds me of the late 60s. An unpopular war we can’t win or get out of, an ineffectual President, a flu pandemic, and now cities burning. Why can’t we ever learn from what went before? Thank goodness for this site and a little break from all the crazy news.
