Photography was very expensive back then, and out of reach for most people. Going to have your picture taken was a big deal and you often couldn’t afford a second, third, etc. try if your expression was off.
Some pictures tend to look creepy/weird because the concept of a camera was strange to a lot of people. You tend to see the similar expressions now if you look at photojournalist photographs of downtrodden people in developing nations.

Early photos also took a long time to shoot. Try holding your face still for 30 seconds while the flash slowwwwly goes off.
In the first few years of photography some people were baffled by the concept. Pioneering portrait photographers were asked if the subject had to be physically present in the studio (?!) and if they were at risk of being injured by the chemicals used in the developing process…
Reminds me of a quote from Charles Babbage, creator of an innovative mechanical computer back in the 1800s: “On two occasions I have been asked, ‘Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out? ‘ I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.”

I’m back!!! Great to get away for a week but even better to come home to your own bed. And to Mike’s great links and posts. Such weirdos today! Derpy dogs, and old timey cat pictures. Love the sleeping kitty, would not be able to resist giving that sweetie a few belly raspberries.
Had a great time in CO visiting family and doing all the touristy stuff – zoo, mountains, museums, etc. Barely managed the drive up to Pike’s Peak, doesn’t help when there’s no guard rails and the driver has a fear of heights. Next time we’re taking the train up! Even got to see some bighorn sheep up close when we were coming back from Cripple Creek, they were literally on the highway. So cool!

AJ – Glad you had an enjoyable visit. Something most of us couldn’t do last year. I remember when I was in the 4th grade, my family vacationed in Colorado and we drove up Pike’s Peak. My dad had to do a Y turn, to go around a curve because it was so narrow. My mom was scared most of the way but it was beautiful scenery.
As for the three legged greyhound, I thought only cats were liquid.
I love Sparky. I don’t like having my picture taken, either.
That kitten is just asking for a belly-huffing.
I’m very excited about the melting greyhound and all the silly goggies–have to save for later.
