I never got why it was bunnies who gave out eggs? Shouldn’t it be the Easter Chicken or something?
Off topic, I have a _loudly_ chirping chipmunk on my patio this morning. It’s so loud I thought there was something in my house! Opened my door and there he was—didn’t even leave when I talked to him. He’s still out there—20 mins so far!
He’s got a lot to say I guess!
Maybe she’s got a nest nearby or there’s a predator and she’s letting them know that she sees them or she’s chastising another chipmunk that’s in earshot. So many possibilities for chatty chipmunks.
I know why, but you’re not going to like the answer. Rabbits were a traditional offering from medieval European peasants to their manorial overlords on this holiday. As my fave textbook on the Middle Ages would point out, in a footnote: “Yes, they ate the easter bunny.”
Arrrrrrrrgh!😢 Poor buns!
Heard it was because the early church co-opted the Celtic goddess Eostre, who transformed a bird into an egg-laying hare.
Okay, that’s bizarre.
Yes! You got it. Eostre, or Ostara, resurrected a nearly frozen sparrow and turned her into a bunny so she would (supposedly) stay warm with her fur. The bunny-bird was so grateful that every year she wanted to reward or give thanks to Ostara, who is also the goddess of fertility and spring, by reproducing for her. Because the bunny was an ex-bird, she laid eggs instead of having baby bunnies.
I have a tiny dog named Ostara, who nearly didn’t make it through her first 48 hours. She was sooo small and runty (her mom was a malnourished stray), that I kept finding her pushed to the side of her pen, shivering with cold. I would warm her up and make sure she got access to her mama’s milk, and by day 3 she had rallied successfully. I figured she needed a name that reflected her resurrection status and her spring birthday. She and her littermates will be 7 years old on Thursday!
Is there any solid evidence for the bird/rabbit story or was it invented by modern pagans, like the fakelore of the Green Man or Herne the Hunter?
I have no idea, nor would it bother me if it is a more recent neo-pagan spin on a very old story. Most belief systems/myths develop and are reinterpreted over time, so if one is to be somewhat less than charitable, one could say it’s all “fakelore”.
Oh I love chippy munks, even when they’re sneaking into our bird feeders. I watch as they stuff their cheekers full of bird seed.
That poor precious bun. It has a very busy day ahead. That chicken needs to get those eggs out, or the Easter basket and Easter egg hunts are going to be sparse.
Hoppy Easter!
Sunday Sweets Hops to It
Happy Easter!
Couldn’t resist.

OMG there’s so many cool things! 😁
Oh my gosh, so many things that I want. Where’s my credit card??
I don’t have the same ones in the link but I do have a set of kitty measuring cups.
Must have for no particular reason😜
Or this…
I need that Nessie ladle.
I know!
Maybe I’ll buy them for all my Christmas shopping list. Amazon has a three piece set, and they look darling.
Happy Easter everyone! This is too funny.
I love this pic! so perfect for the day!
Happy Easter to those who celebrate it and for those who don’t, why not use it as an excuse to eat candy?
