Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to the Caturday open thread! Today reader JEC shares a photo and a great tip for enjoying the weekend that really only works if you’re a cat.

Mrs Hattie Perkins looks forward to the weekend. She recommends draping yourself around the neck of someone you love — or just kind of… like — for a good snooze.

Or if you just met them, that’s fine.

Never have I wanted to be a cat more, just so I could follow the lovely Mrs Hattie Perkins’s sage advice.

Alas, that won’t get the laundry, dusting, and vacuuming done.

    • Duckie 🐥 August 3, 2024 / 12:51 pm

Get Maru to do your laundry…

      • Ricky & Bibi's Mom August 3, 2024 / 1:17 pm

If only I’d known in time!

    • tara August 3, 2024 / 2:01 pm

Oh my gosh – can’t wait to send this to so many people!

  2. allein 🐾 August 3, 2024 / 10:10 am

Oh, yeah, and the dogs were good again.

    Hank was set up.

    • DEBG August 3, 2024 / 11:40 am

Yeah, that’s a violation of Hank’s civil rights, indeed! Such marvelous critters this week. Cats do just appear.

      • tara August 3, 2024 / 1:35 pm

Agreed! It was a set up!

Such a face! The rare and elusive parrot cat, found on the shoulders of the most discerning sailors. And like above, I’d love to be a cat like Hattie but that won’t get the chores done. Plus it’s gonna be hot, hot, hot today so have to get them done early so I can sit in the pool all day to keep cool. There’s no sense turning on the A/C with a hole in the ceiling and not knowing what’s leaking. And as my parent’s used to say, we’re not heating the outside (or attic in this case).

Had an odd occurrence in the neighborhood last night. I’m walking the dogs and see the latest outside resident (who had set up camp at the end of the road) wandering around totally naked!😳🤦‍♀️ I know it’s hot and I know you’re warm but really??!! Put some dang clothes on! Tried calling the police non-emergency number but was put on hold. Finally hung up when I saw someone else had called it in. Hopefully they’ve either put clothes on or they’ve left the area. I’ll find out shortly when dogs and I go for our morning walkies.

Some good news today, though. Thor has eaten!!!! Found some wet food that’s like a whipped pate that he scarfed down along with pumpkin ginger topper. Fingers crossed the meds are kicking in and he’s feeling better.

    Stay cool everyone!

    • allein 🐾 August 3, 2024 / 10:18 am

      😕

Glad Thor seems to be doing better! When Pablo was sick and wouldn’t eat we gave him baby food chicken. He seemed to like that.

      • AJ August 3, 2024 / 11:38 am

Baby food (chicken/turkey, beef, or fruit combos) is my other stand-by when my pets are sick. Mix in a little plain yogurt/kefir and almost always they hoover it down. It’s also easy to disguise meds in that mixture.

    • DEBG August 3, 2024 / 11:32 am

Great news about Thor. I hope the house situation keeps moving along so you can turn on the AC again.

      • AJ August 3, 2024 / 11:41 am

Luckily we have one of those portable a/c units that we put in one of the bedrooms so we have one room that’s cool. Put puppers in there while we run errands.

    • Georgiana August 3, 2024 / 11:58 am

Very glad Thor ate well, Minnie ate a little this morning but not much, I may try the baby food thing on her and see if she likes it.

    • 6rabbits August 3, 2024 / 12:20 pm

Such a relaxed and happy kitty! So glad Thor has something he could wolf down! My older friend always swore by baby food. One time she was in line with a lot of sale baby food, and the woman behind her queried? My friend explained it was for her sick cat and why it was best, and the woman looked at her and said “Genius!” and left the line to get some!😂

Had to share this one, too…The Girl with the Dogs got one of her gremlins a little makeover…

    • 6rabbits August 3, 2024 / 12:23 pm

Melvin looks very good with the dk brown dyed spots!👍🏼

  5. Duckie 🐥 August 3, 2024 / 11:37 am

    Happy weekend, everyone.
The beautiful Mrs. Hattie Perkins is the feline version of Mary Poppins, showing us how to be practically perfect in every way.
Heat building up again. Getting A/C out.
Hubby slowly recuperating. Felt well enough for a shower today.
I’m feeling somewhat down right now. Not sure why.
Stay safe and cool, everyone, and have a good weekend.

    • Ricky & Bibi's Mom August 3, 2024 / 1:20 pm

If you’ve had a lot of stress adrenaline recently, you may be coming down from that.

      • Duckie 🐥 August 3, 2024 / 6:27 pm

        True…

  6. DEBG August 3, 2024 / 11:47 am

Happy Caturday! The lovely Mrs Hattie Perkins knows how to relax, for sure. I used to have a cat who would hang out on my neck every night, as I was reading in bed. If my hair was wet from a shower, he would suck it. Weeeeeiiiiiirrrrrdddd. And I miss it.

It’s great to be back after missing last weekend. I read the post and everyone’s replies, but was far too exhausted to write. We had a textile arts try-it-for-free event behind the Boulder Farmers Market last Saturday. People could weave, spin, make pompoms, crochet, add to a community fiber sculpture, or dye a bandana with indigo. I was at the indigo station, so I came home blue. (It washed off.) In the 4 hours people could participate, I sat down maybe twice. It was great fun–adults and kids were really excited and eager about the whole affair. And it was utterly exhausting! When I got home around 4:30, I could hardly move.

This weekend, it’s much hotter and I don’t have any big events. I’ll try to repaint an accent cabinet, and I’ll keep plugging away on my studio revamp. If I have the energy . . .

    Hugs to you all.

It sounds like a blast! But that long on your feet is taxing!

  7. Georgiana August 3, 2024 / 12:18 pm

The beautiful Mrs Hattie knows how to enjoy life!

I had an eye appointment Thursday with a specialist for a laser cleaning procedure because the lens they put in after my cataract surgery 4 years ago has become cloudy something that happens sometimes it seems. I thought they were going to do the procedure right away but no, they did a bunch of tests and I have to wait for them call me to fix a appointment later.

To top it off hubby is having problems off and on with the stones in his bladder causing him to have sudden urges to urinate. He’s been on a waiting list for his operation for two months now. Unfortunately the health care in Canada is a little broken since Covid and the waiting list for non urgent surgery is long.

We’re in the middle of another heat wave I am SO grateful to now have central air conditioning!!!

Stay cool and Atay safe people!

  8. 6rabbits August 3, 2024 / 12:29 pm

Lots of mentions of heat! And it’s supposed to reach the 90s with high humidity—of course—for 3 days! Sooooooooo glad for my AC! I always feel sorry for people with no access to AC.

  9. tara August 3, 2024 / 2:00 pm

Hi Everyone! (waves furiously) I think I’m in the same boat as y’all, it’s hot and I have too much to do. I’ve actually taken the first three Fridays of August off so that I can get some things done at home.

Mrs. Hattie P. you really have a good life don’t you! And thank you for presenting your adorable snoot for boops – which I did very gently and quietly so as not to wake you up.

Peeps – please forgive this shameless bit of self-promotion. . . Calling all Knitters! I can finally unveil a project I’ve been working on. The Historical Society of Pennsylvania and Kelbourne Woolens have collaborated on an event and vintage pattern knit-a-long. Kelbourne Woolens revived Germantown Yarn, which was manufactured in Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia since the 18th Century, through the mid 20th Century. With the return of the yarn (still proudly made in the USA) I was able to knit an authentic version of a “Ladies’ Dressing Sacque” from 1912. You can see two versions of it on my Ravelry page here: https://rb.gy/pembd4 The pattern is very easy, and wonderfully warm and snuggly. (Never mind that it’s hot – one must start planning these things now – Fall will be here soon)
We are hosting a lecture and knit-a-long this coming Wednesday, Aug 7th, at 5pm EST, when we will also unveil the updated pattern. The event is hybrid so you can join us from afar! Registration is here at HSP’s site: https://rb.gy/edy8bd If you are in the Philadelphia area, join us in person for a raffle. Win a full set of the Germantown Yarn Bulky to knit the sweater!

And now, back to your regularly scheduled program…and I’m off to quell the morning glories that are taking over the entire garden.

    • DEBG August 3, 2024 / 2:27 pm

Oooh I love your sacque! I’ll be working during the lecture, unfortunately, or I’d register.

      • tara August 3, 2024 / 8:48 pm

Thanks DebG 0 please register, 🙂 I’m lobbying for it to be recorded. If you register you’ll receive a link to the recording.

        • DEBG August 3, 2024 / 9:33 pm

I did! Hope it will be recorded like other events.

    • 6rabbits August 3, 2024 / 7:27 pm

      I don’t belong to Ravelry so I can’t see it😢. (I crochet—excessively—not knit)

      • tara August 3, 2024 / 8:51 pm

Hi 6Rabbits – if you click the link, you should be able to see my post. You may not be able to navigate further. 🙂

  10. Alice Shortcake August 3, 2024 / 3:40 pm

I had hoped to post photos of my loft today, but decided to wait until I receive a couple of posters – from 1980s RSC productions – to add the finishing touch to my new room. With any luck it should be ready for the big reveal by next Caturday!

On a somewhat different note, has anyone watched “Ripley”? It features what may be the most gorgeous black and white cinematography ever, but I just couldn’t suspend my disbelief because the plot hinges on there being no photos of Ripley…when his victim’s girlfriend is a keen amateur photographer and he spent most of his time with them!

    • DEBG August 3, 2024 / 9:34 pm

Can’t wait for the big reveal!

I haven’t watched Ripley, though it sounds intriguing. I’ve been relishing Shogun, which is simply beautiful.

    • Not That Mike The Other Mike August 13, 2024 / 3:36 pm

Here are the photos of the loft. My apologies to Alice for being so late to post these.

  11. Elizabeth August 8, 2024 / 8:05 am

    Good morning.
I am putting a belated post here to see if anyone has advice on good toys/enrichment for parakeets. My dad found a stray parakeet in a warehouse at his place of work. Green/yellow male, now named Bernard. Bernard now has large cage, food, water, mirror and jingle toy. We play music for him, which he seems to like. Yesterday it was Bobby McFerrin. Today, I played Barry Manilow “I Can’t Smile Without You.” Has a whistling intro.

My family members are cat people, so we don’t know much about keeping birds happy.

    Thanks for any advice.
