Weekend Open Thread

Happy Caturday! Today’s visiting cats, from reader Amy F., are sweet innocent angels — “when they’re sleeping.”

Two black and white cats lie on a white quilt facing each other, with their legs intertwined
But when we aren’t, watch out.

Bonus Video!

Reader Diane shares her friend’s cat Max politely being asked if he can meow later: “Max does not believe in later.”

“Heated elevated bed by the window” 😂😆😂
Wish Pretzel understood the 7:00 time set, cos he comes up on the bed wanting pets from 6:30 on. I can only remember 2X that he woke me up at 7! Sometimes he gets confused and has come in at 5:30! Nope Nope

It has gotten very dark this AM tho rain isn’t supposed to be here til 12. Little creepy. But we desperately need the rain. It’s been in the high 80s, mid90s for over 3 weeks.🤨

    Good morning peeps.

I would say it’s a great way to start the day, two cute tuxedo cats and in my opinion a very soft spoken void but I’m a mess this morning because I had insomnia last night and managed only about 2 hours of sleep.

Also we are still in the middle of a heat wave with temperatures reaching 29C/84F but feeling like 39C/102F and it’s going to continue for most of next week.

I swear I think Mother Nature has finally decided to do away with us and I couldn’t blame her after the mess we made of the planet.

I hope everyone has a good weekend.

I sympathize with the insomnia, which I also have about half the time.

I love the leg entanglement of the visiting cats. And Max is pleading the Fifth.

It’s been an odd week at the Shortcakery. The good news: I’ve been given the go-ahead to reduce the steroid dosage! The bad news: remember when I sprayed the weeds on my street with bug repellent instead of weedkiller? Well, I did the exact opposite IN MY OWN GARDEN and blasted three thriving hollyhocks and a jasmine shrub with deadly poison. One hollyhock is deceased but the others look as though they may pull through.

There was a bit of excitement on Thursday when a helicopter flew so low above the Shortcakery I thought it was attempting to make an emergency landing or crash in the road. Going by the size of the shadow cast on the flat roof of the kitchen (I was looking out of the bedroom window at the time) and the deafening noise of the rotor blades it must have come terrifyingly close. It was quite a relief to wander into the back yard early the following morning and see two hot air balloons sailing overhead at a safe distance…

In other news, the heatwave is back and a hosepipe ban is in force throughout Yorkshire. Oh, and the Bayeaux Tapestry will be on temporary loan to the British Museum next year, so I’ll definitely be paying a visit!

    • Georgiana July 12, 2025 / 10:25 am

I saw the Bayeux Tapestry when we visited France, it was our first stop on our trip. It’s amazing I highly recommend seeing it if you never have.

      • ^oo^ July 12, 2025 / 10:56 am

Absolutely! Could have spent lots more time there. Amazing stitchery… keep an eye out for the naughty bits.

        • Alice Shortcake July 12, 2025 / 1:55 pm

There is certainly a lot of NSFW stuff going on in the borders…and I love the depiction of some Normans wading to shore with a large dog tucked under each arm! Although I live near Fulford and Stamford Bridge, the sites of battles fought in the month before Hastings in 1066, I’ve never got around to visiting either. (Adds both to bucket list)

    • DEBG July 12, 2025 / 1:23 pm

Say hello to the Bayeux Tapestry for me when you go! I started my medieval history career studying the Normans.

On the days I drive down to the office, I go past a small airport. Sometimes the little plans are coming in for a landing, and they’re so low over my road, it makes me nervous.

Happy Caturday and good morning kitty visitors! Not much going on this weekend. I need to clean stuff. And finish my library book that I can’t renew. Today’s high is supposed to be 85 and it’s cloudy but no rain in the forecast for today. But potentially rain tomorrow and every day for the next week…🌧️

The dogs were so good this week. When I first saw the glacier dog I assumed he would be #1, then I saw Rocky’s story yesterday morning (I hadn’t seen Hazel before watching the video).

(Here’s Rocky’s original post, he earned the rare 15/10 at only 5 months old!)

HOW did the dog become enamored of watermelon? She/he is beyond excited!

      • allein 🐾 July 12, 2025 / 9:56 am

I want to know what he does with a ball that just looks like a watermelon. For science, of course.

        • 6Rabbits July 12, 2025 / 10:48 am

          Of course😉

Getting philosophical with Olive and Mabel.

(I bookmarked this one for future reference…)

    • DEBG July 12, 2025 / 1:22 pm

      Simply beautiful.

Happy weekend everyone! Love the matching cats sleeping. All animals (and children) are perfect angels while sleeping. It’s the awake part that can be challenging. And the void negotiations was hysterical. Now if he could meow that softly before 7 am, there may not be as many problems. Miss Thing decided to grumble/bark around 4:45 this morning and I’m like really??? You can’t let me have my last 15-20 minutes in peace? Yes, I’m weird, my body usually doesn’t let me sleep in and I’m up around 5 am every day.

Today starts my 1 week staycation!!!!! My brother and sister-in-law are in town for him attending a work event so I get to hang with my twin (she has the same birthday as me but 5 years apart) and go sightseeing. Haircut this morning then probably a few errands before they arrive. They’re driving from CO Springs and should be here this afternoon or tomorrow. Have a fab weekend everyone and hope the weather cooperates in your corner of the world.

  7. Tara July 12, 2025 / 12:25 pm

Happy Caturday everyone! I’m going to take Olive and Mabel’s life philosophy to heart this weekend, (what’s tomorrow?)
Update on Jacques, his claw is no longer painful or swollen, so the vet thinks it was just an infected nail bed. Phew! But his tests came back and his thyroid is getting worse. So we’re upping the pill to a full tablet daily. I still have the ones I’ve cracked in half so Jacques got two pill pockets. Unfortunately its the end of the bag and the pockets have become stale. And since he is such a picky eater I could only convince him to eat one. So I put the other pill on the counter, made a BLT, and thought, hmmm, this one loves bacon, so maybe if I roll the pill pocket in the bacon grease. Worked like a charm. So I’ve poured off the grease and am saving it for future trickery.
The rest of today I should spend cleaning, but it’s so yucky and humid, it’s really hard to get motivated. Thursday I made grapefruit water ice. I based it on a Sarah Tyson Rorer (y’all know her right? ;)), lemon water ice recipe. It was delicious! I’m going to make another batch and make photos. There is an artist putting together a West Philly cookbook and I think I’ll submit this recipe.

  8. Tara July 12, 2025 / 12:27 pm

Oh! forgot to comment on the Caturday Cats. What are the dear little angels names?
And Max, did you have a meeting with Jacques? Because he is the void alarm clock in my house. 5:50. Every morning.

    • Amy Floren July 12, 2025 / 1:21 pm

Those are my little angels, Luna on the left, Sophie on the right. They are adept managing my life.

      • DEBG July 12, 2025 / 1:30 pm

They’re lovely. I adore their entwined paws!

  9. Duckie 🐥 July 12, 2025 / 1:09 pm

    Greetings, all.
It’s a miserable hot, humid Saturday morning. Temperatures will be going up to 34C this week (sorry, don’t know the Fahrenheit conversion). Swollen joints, runny nose and sweat dripping in my eyes (autocorrect, why did you suggest lungs instead of eyes?).
Little Duckie doing MUCH better. Back to her old sassy self. New feathers still coming in, but the most uncomfortable part is over. Now she just needs to grow them, and eat plenty of good food to keep her strength up. And yes, hubby’s fingers count as good food, to her.
Today’s kitties are making me jealous. I would love to be able to just lay down and fall asleep anywhere I want.
I have much to do today, but Mabel and Olive make me want to just watch them all day. But no one else will do my work, so…
    Have a great weekend, everyone.

Cuddly cats and a bargain in the making! What a great way to start the day! Cats are natural lawyers, so I do not wholly trust Max to keep his side of the bargain.

Just hanging out this weekend, and trying to hang on. Sadly, my friend lost her beautiful Dante cat yesterday–I appreciate everybody’s support early in the week, but he wasn’t improving and was really suffering. He was a cat I knew and loved too. So sad for my friend.

If you’re experiencing hot humid weather, I’m so sorry. Come visit me in Colorado! It gets hot sometimes, but it’s almost never humid.
