Welcome to the Caturday open thread! Some days, when everything seems to be unraveling, and you just need a place to hide, come join us in the chat room. Just look out for suspicious lumps under the rug.

Well if that’s a lump it’s the cutest lump I ever seen.
It’s spaghetti sauce making day here today!
My husband goes nuts about once a year and makes an enormous pot of spaghetti sauce so he can freeze it. And when I say enormous I mean enormous, the pot is professional kitchen size and even then he sometimes has to take out a second pot because there’s too much sauce. We usually have enough sauce in the freezer to last the whole year.
So I’ll be cutting and dicing peppers and garlic for a good part of the morning while he is in charge of the meat balls making and the sausages and cooking.
I hope everyone is in good health and has a nice weekend.
In ye olden days, that’s how you made stuff for the off-season.
It’s canning season now, so if you want quality tomato sauce, fruit jams, preserves, pickles, etc. now is the best time to make them to last you until next year.
The stuff from the store doesn’t nearly taste as good as homemade anyway, even though it’s a pain the rear to make a whole bunch at once.
Yummmmm, sounds so good. Enjoy! I’ve always found the process fun too. I hope you have a great time.
Good luck with the sauce making. Sounds delicious.
Ummm, Georgiana, if I bring a bowl and a fork, may I have some sauce for my spaghetti? The sauce sounds fabulous and wow, how ambitious. But how nice that one day of over the top work leads to a whole year of deliciousness. Reminds me of my friend who once or twice a year, assembles the whole family to make a huge batch of pierogies (Polish meat dumplings).
And that is a lovely looking lump. My two lumps are curled up on the sofa with me. Poor Thor is still recuperating from his vet visit. Went in for a dental cleaning and maybe some extraction, if there’s any bad teeth. He’s now almost toothless after the vet extracted 21, yes 21 teeth. Plus they found he had another ear infection so they treated that. He’s on very wet food until his mouth heals. I feel bad for my little guy but he’s managing. Then poor Valkyrie didn’t know what to do with herself when he was at the vet. She just laid on the floor and looked depressed. Other than that the week was decent.
Weekend plans got switched up somewhat. Had a hair appointment that got canceled because my stylist ended up in the hospital. The guy has had some health challenges the last year and he just started feeling better the last few months. I think it’s the heat we’ve been having that made him unwell. Like I thought, we had a relatively cool summer up to now and I predicted that we’d get hit with a heat wave in August/September. Sometimes I hate being right, lol. Next week is high 80s/low 90s. Yuck. So no hair, so I’ll go to breakfast, pick up my reserved books at the library today, then tomorrow I might join up with my sketching group. We’re called Urban Sketchers and once or twice a month, we meet up in public spots and draw for a couple hours, using pencils, markers, watercolors. Tomorrow is the local cactus garden, Could be challenging!
Have a good weekend! And for those in the US, enjoy your Monday off for Labor Day.
Poor sweet Thor. We’re sending him lots of healing purrs. Hope he’s back on his feet soon.
Happy Caturday. This week sucked and I have to work Sunday and then Monday is a holiday which is annoying. (Not complaining about a holiday, of course, just its placement on a Monday of a month-end close week.) I will hide with you, kitty, and please don’t seek.
Some pretty birdies if you’re in a puzzling mood!

The dogs were good, but I don’t remember Hungry Hungry Hippos being that quiet…
Hi have huge respect for companies that step up and help with pet care if an animal has come to harm because of one of their products. Jacques once was supervising me put spray foam in the cracks in the basement walls. A bit of it fell on him and before I could do anything he turned around and tried to lick it off. It got stuck on his tongue and I was terrified that he might have swallowed some and that it would expand inside him. I couldn’t catch him either because he was so freaked out. Long story short, I had to call the animal poison control before the UPenn emergency vet would let me take him there. I spoke to a saint of a vet tech, who calmed me down and once she found out the spray foam was made by DuPont, she told me DuPont would cover the $60 up front credit card fee for the call. It was a huge relief because I was SO broke at the time. Jacques was fine in the end. I was told to mix Metamucil in his wet food and keep an eye on him.
That’s awesome. 💗
It really is.
Also cats are lightning fast!
This is hilarious…and technically a cute animal… (I remember seeing videos of this guy doing Disney parodies on his balcony during quarantine. Facebook decided I needed to see this earlier this week. If you go to his page he’s got lots of stuff with his cat, too. His current cat is Goose, who is apparently about 4 months old, and his previous cat was Zeus, both orange tabbies. Which seems like the perfect type of cat for him.)
I am literally crying from laughter here. What a genius video on every level.
If this was the guy who dressed up and sang to his cat during quarantine, I remember those videos too. Just hilarious.
How about a nice warm bubble bath?
Does the puppy come with it?
Every dog does deserve that.
So do I. Unfortunately, I’ve got my tub filled with dyeing equipment, so no long soaks for me.
Happy Caturday! I’m currently sitting in a motel room by myself so I don’t have anyone else to tell this to, but I submitted three photos to the WA State Fair for their competition, and two of them were accepted for display, with one of those two being selected as Judges’ Choice!! There are usually at least 800 photos submitted, so it’s really difficult to get them accepted, much less get an award. In the past few years, I’ve had six accepted, out of about 35 submitted.
This year I submitted three, and of course the one I thought would get in, didn’t, while the two that I didn’t really think had much of a chance, did! I’ll try to post the photos here after I get home this afternoon, if I can figure out how.
Congratulations!!! That’s wonderful for you. Looking forward to seeing your work.
Congrats! We’re so proud of you!
Hooray, it’s a long weekend. One more week of too warm, and then maybe I won’t feel so 🤬. I very desperately need a place to hide, so little kitty, prepare to be snorgled.
Starting to reluctantly catch up on my to do list. I went over it this week, and deliberately removed several items as being unnecessary. I plan to focus on that list this coming week, and try to cross off everything by next Saturday. It’s going to be tough, but I’ve been stressing over it for too long.
Today is Duckie’s seventh anniversary of coming to us. Yesterday, she discovered the wooden beads that have been in her cage for over a year, and has been learning what a delightful noise they make when banged on the cage bars.
Off to the library, and then making cottage pie for supper.
Have a fantastic weekend, everyone.
Not much has been going on at the Shortcakery this week, but there’s been a lot of drama on the North Yorkshire Moors. You may remember that I was in that area a couple of weeks ago and saw huge clouds of smoke. Well, it appears that the blaze was extinguished but somehow reignited, and although it has now been contained it was burning fiercely until a couple of days ago. At one point it caused the closure of the ICBM Early Warning System station at Fylingdales and even caused long-forgotten bombs and tank shells* at a WW2 training area to explode! Amazingly no humans or animals have been killed or injured but the moor must look like a post-apocalyptic landscape now.
*My first reaction was “how can anyone FORGET stuff like this?”, but then I remembered visiting Belgium and seeing newly-discovered WW1 explosives laid out at the edge of the road for collection by the authorities.
“Holy smokes” was the first thing that came to my mind but hopefully you all don’t find it insensitive.
They’re still finding land mines and explosives in war zones, from over a century ago.
Love playing hide-n-seek with my cats! This little cutie seems like a champ.
I’m checking in late today because I had a specific goal for the morning: make a will. I’d done 95% of the planning and notes already, back in Jan 2024, then stuff just sat. I’m determined not to turn 60 in a few weeks while I’m intestate. Those free online tools are quite useful! I’m nearly done, then I can move on to my cheerful things like finishing the last scarf on my loom.
Happy Labor Day if you’ve got Monday off. Hugs to you all.
Hello all! I got back to Europe from the US last Sunday and spent my last week of freedom at a film festival. Of note, “Sunfish (and other stories on Green Lake)” and “Hundreds of Beavers” which was an absolute riot! Unfortunately, I dropped my iPad on my foot this morning and may have broken a toe. Not exactly an auspicious beginning to the school year – semester begins Monday.
