Weekend Open Thread

It’s time for a little Caturday housekeeping, as reader Tara O. brings out the dreaded vacuum cleaner — and her cat Jacques has a most un-catlike reaction:

I decided to do a little deep cleaning as in vacuuming my bed. I now have proof that Jacques is completely deaf because he came onto the mattress and was not distressed in the least even thought the vacuum was running full blast.

Oooh, everyone must be having a lie-in this morning. It’s either Jacques is deaf or he’s taken cat indifference/ignoring things to the next level.

Another quiet weekend chez moi. Lego club meeting today, then car show and crafty class at the museum tomorrow. When I’m at the park, I might do some painting. I’m still attempting to figure how to do watercolors. I have determined I don’t like the pencils so I’m back to brushes. In between, some house cleaning and errands.

    Happy weekend everyone!

Jacques is either completely deaf or he is the bravest cat on the planet!

Today is the 50th anniversary of the first time my husband asked me out so we are going out to a very nice restaurant this evening. I know it’s not a date people usually celebrate but since neither of us ever thought or wanted to get married and we stayed together ever since we decided a long time ago that it was our anniversary.

It’s still a bit of a roller coaster with BIL’s mental health and it’s taking a toll on the family.

In other news as they say, I’ve finished putting my summer clothes away and taking out the winter clothes. I’ve notice that there is less clothes to move every year but I still have way too much so I’ll have to sort the one I don’t really wear and donate them.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Stars was afraid of the vacuum. My parents have a central vacuum system and the cannister is in the garage on the other side of the living room wall, so no matter where you’re vacuuming you can also hear it in the living room, and Stars would inevitably retreat to a third place until the noise was over. But then sometimes my mom will leave the hose coiled up in the living room when she’s done and Stars would sit in the middle of it looking proud of herself, like she killed the giant snake.

Stripes would let my mom vacuum him.

Not much going on today. I was off yesterday and had a doctor appointment in the morning. Just after she left the room and I was standing up to get my sweatshirt, while I was still standing on the little step at the end of the exam table and just about to step off, the power went out. There were emergency lights in the hall but not in the room so it was pitch black except for a line of light at the bottom of the door. So I stopped moving so I wouldn’t fall (since I couldn’t see where the edge of the step was) and reached over to the counter to find my phone and turn on the flashlight. Then the nurse came in to do my flu shot and had to leave the door open to see. Then I had to leave my name at the desk, where the receptionist was just making a list on a sheet of paper, and she said the computer had printed two pages but she wasn’t sure if there were supposed to be more (I’ll have to check my chart online, but I have the one for my bloodwork which is really the only one I need I think), and they would call me if there was any follow-up needed once the power came back. So I left and the traffic light at the corner was also out, and two police cars were parked in the intersection and they were directing everyone to turn right. Which was the way I was going, anyway, but there were a bunch of cars in the other lane so they all had to get over. Don’t know if there was an accident or something; I looked back down the road as I was turning but I couldn’t see anything and the next traffic light was working. So that was exciting.

Tomorrow we’re doing dinner for my parents’ birthdays. My mom’s was Tuesday and my dad’s is next month, and he said we’d do them both this weekend. I don’t know where we’re going; she mentioned Bonefish Grill but I don’t know if that is her final decision (I hope not…). Gotta do some chores today.

The dogs were good again… I want the tiny one who wears a hair scrunchie as a cone.
Also, go to the video on youtube and click the ‘like’ button and see what happens. I just discovered it yesterday.

(Content warning for #1; it is utterly rage-inducing and related to the political climate we are in.)

Thanks for warning on #1. 🤬

Oh, Chop. That poor family. I hate this timeline.

I saw Chop earlier in the week and was just HORRIFIED!🤬

Hi All, happy Saturday. I’m off in a little while to go a-marchin’.
My sweet Jacques, stone deaf. He was so confused about why I was pushing the vacuum all over the place without turning it on. It has finally turned Fall here and so Jacques has been extra snuggly. But not in the traditional place between my legs at night, now he takes over my pillow. I suspect it’s because he only weighs 9lbs anymore (down from 16lbs). He is no longer the boulder he once was and is more easily tossed when I turn. Much safer near my head.

There is a protest near where I work, about half an hour from home. Anxiety brain makes it very difficult for me to go. It’s from 12-2; I am thinking of at least driving by to see how big it is and cheer them on. In which case I guess I should get dressed… (it’s 11:15 already…).

Just for a change there’s been a lot of drama in my life over the past few days. On Wednesday evening I realized that the central heating hadn’t come on and there was no hot water, but fortunately the Fount of All Knowledge (YouTube) had a tutorial explaining the problem and how to solve it. After I twiddled a couple of valves to raise the water pressure everything went back to normal.

On Thursday I went to Stratford-upon-Avon for two nights to see “Macbeth” (so disappointing I left at the interval) and “Measure For Measure” (outstanding). There was yet more drama on Friday morning when the driver of an SUV smashed into the corner of Hall’s Croft, once the home of Shakespeare’s daughter Susanna, and caused as much damage as he could have done without actually demolishing the wall. Ironically the house has been closed to the public for several years…undergoing renovations! I walked past about an hour after it happened and saw workmen supporting the upper storey with scaffolding and covering the wall with plastic sheeting. Something tells me that there will be fun and games regarding insurance…

Finally, when I embarked on what should have been an uneventful train journey home I realized that the computer-generated itinerary was absolute nonsense, requiring me to make an unnecessary change and wasting nearly half an hour. THEN the train I wanted was cancelled and I had to improvise. THEN I got to Birmingham and discovered that the 12.04 to York terminated at Leeds. THEN I got to Leeds and was greeted by signs informing me that there was no train to York but a bus would be provided instead. I have no idea what caused this utter chaos but I’ve never been so re!ieved to get home!

        What an adventure you had!

  5. Emsthemonster October 18, 2025 / 11:07 am

Cats are weird. Maszat is afraid of the rustling leaves, a louder word but the lawn mover in use is perfectly OK in 1m distance. She is definitely not deaf, she is a wonderbug!

  6. DEBG October 18, 2025 / 11:36 am

Sweet Jacques, you are so brave. Or so deaf. We love you either way.

Off to get my hair cut, finally. I’m not going to protests because someone scheduled a picnic for this afternoon, for my former boss. There are some wonderful knitted frog cap patterns going around . . .

After this weekend, things will finally quiet down on the social calendar. I can’t wait for things to go back to normal! You all have such fun plans, and I just want to stay home with the cats. Georgiana, a special hug for you and your family, and happy sort of anniersary.

    Happy weekend.
The weather is cool and dry. Flannel sheets and jammies are out. Space heaters are cleaned (who doesn’t love the fragrance of burning dust?). Windows are closed at night. Raccoons are wandering through the backyard digging up grubs. Must be fall. Perfect.
My cold is almost over. Had a funny experience with it yesterday. I coughed so much and so hard on Monday that I dislocated a few ribs, but had to wait till Friday to see chiropractor. She wreaked havoc all over my back, and when I sat up, I could breathe properly again. I went to pay, and had to use the facilities before I left. Before I went in the bathroom, I took a few deep breaths, and felt a sneeze coming. So I went in, sneezed, and my sinuses drained all at once! I recommend a chiropractic treatment for any kind of prolonged stuffed head.
BIL’s vehicle failed the assessment for his drivers test, so hubby let him use ours. Then BIL failed the drivers test, but decided to wait before rescheduling. When he finally got around to setting up an appointment time for a retest, the system was booked until December 23. Hubby’s boss was feeling kind of bad, even though none of this was his fault, so he offered BIL enough weekend hours on foot to give him the minimum amount of hours to keep his benefits. BIL refused, saying weekends were for family.
    🙄
Next week the fall rains set in. I plan to do my fall housecleaning and finish Christmas presents. Then I’m going to binge read Harry Potter.
Off to have coffee with my BFF and window shop.
    Have a fantastic weekend, everyone.

PS what are the protests for?

Ahhh, Harry Potter!💙 One of my favorite series ever! I think I’ve read the first three 5 times at least!

      • DEBG October 18, 2025 / 2:32 pm

I just re-listened to all the audiobooks from Jim Dale, and when the new full cast recordings come out soon, I’ll listen again. Still love the books, and trying hard to forgive JKR. It’s tough for me to separate the art from the artist sometimes.

        • 6Rabbits October 18, 2025 / 3:54 pm

I know. But her problems don’t make her books any less wonderful, so I just try to ignore. Tho it’s disappointing.

          • DEBG October 18, 2025 / 9:16 pm

Upon this last “read”, I felt the magic all over again. And it struck me that if she were writing the books now, they wouldn’t have so much love and acceptance in them.

    • belphebe October 18, 2025 / 2:52 pm

What a nice boss! It’s wonderful when bosses/employers try to do their best for their employees. But what an ungrateful BIL! And I suppose when his benefits run out he’ll be whining about it, even though it’s his fault.

I’m glad that you are feeling better.

I just saw a video with George Conway on MSNBC; he was at the DC event today and his Corgi, Clyde, wore this jacket. 😄 (I couldn’t find a pic of him wearing it, though.) They said there were 7 million people at all the protests.

My other favorite, as a Jersey girl, was a sign seen at the Princeton event that had this picture of Bruce Springsteen and said One Boss. No Kings.
