Happy New Year from Vienna! We just finished watching the New Year’s concert on
TV and y’all should definitely check it out on PBS tonight or ORF (for those of you with VPN).

Australia admits it made up animal names?

I knew that quokka smile was suspicious…

    • DEBG January 1, 2026 / 11:45 am

Not just the names but the animals’ attributes! I was crying with laughter.

Too funny!!! Needed that this morning. Lack of sleep from idiotic neighbors and their fireworks til 1 am and it’s currently pouring here. Under a flash flood warning for a few more hours. It was raining so hard I waved the white flag this morning and didn’t take the dogs out. Thank goodness for pee pads.

      • allein 🐾 January 1, 2026 / 9:59 am

I was pleasantly surprised at the minimal fireworks here. I went to bed around 11:30, read for a bit, and started hearing them right around when I was turning off the light. I didn’t look at the clock but they couldn’t have lasted more than ten minutes or so.

      • Emsthemonster January 1, 2026 / 10:17 am

Fireworks started here at 6 p.m and lasted until 1 a.m. People were shooting fireworks from 3 directions around my house, it absolutely felt like being under siege. It was terrifying even for me. I think this has been the worst New Year’s Eve ever here. I could sleep only 1,5 hours as I could not calm Maszat down even hours after the fireworks and firecrackers ended.

        • AJ January 1, 2026 / 11:47 am

Our neighbors must have been on the same wavelength. We thought with it raining, it would put a literal damper on everything but oh no, I think they took it as a challenge. Ha, you think some rain is going to stop us, I’ll show you and Mother Nature! And I heard some starting at around 3 pm, guess it was practice. Like you, we were surrounded on all sides by idiots setting them. Definitely felt like we were under siege. Hubby (combat vet) hunkered down watching tv with his headphones on while the dogs were hiding somewhere. Didn’t get to sleep until almost 1:30. 😑😑🀬🀬🀬 Time for coffee, probably will just relax and putter around today. Oh joy, it looks like the rain has slowed so I’ll attempt to get the dogs out.

I’m laughing too hard to type. So fantastic.

Happy New Year Everyone! Here’s hoping 2026 is a good year.
We had a light dusting of snow at some point early this morning. It’s very pretty outside. I was woken up by my council at 5am for no d*mn good reason. Food bowls were full enough. Something was wrong, because there was so much stomping on me and jumping on my head I had to get up. Couldn’t figure out what the issue was though.
I wanted to spend today cooking and preparing for the next few months, but I discovered that my downstairs freezer was not frozen. I had to throw a lot of stuff out :(. I turned the temperature colder and left something in there to see if it was just overstuffed. Otherwise I need to call someone tomorrow. Hopefully it’s just a top up of coolant or whatever they put in freezers.

    Saw this one this morning:

Also, can I join this group? It snowed last night. WTH? I was not told there would be snow. Plows haven’t come around, either, so it seems I’m not the only one. I heard someone out there and it sounded like a snow shovel scraping the pavement so I finally dragged myself out of bed to look outside. My dad said it’s very light but I still don’t want to go out there. But I don’t want to have to get frozen snow off my car tomorrow if it doesn’t blow off during the day and the highest temp the rest of the day is only 27F.

    • allein 🐾 January 1, 2026 / 12:00 pm

Okay, it only took a few minutes…but it’s cold out there! At least the sun is shining and it melted the snow off the back half of the car, but the front is still shaded so I wasn’t sure if the sun would get all of it. Now I’m back inside with some caramel tea and an English muffin with sour cherry jam.

Happy 2026 everyone! So the Aussie animals are not real?? Guess all the photos were faked or they dressed up dogs and cats like the other animals, lol. need some of that birb’s energy, might be better than caffeine. Some of those council photos are worrisome but they missed my favorite

    Happy New Year to all.
Thank you ever so much, Georgiana. I desperately needed to make the rude noise I made when I watched that. 🀬 firecrackers.

  10. DEBG January 1, 2026 / 11:49 am

Happy 2026, everyone! So glad we made it through 2025–what an awful year.

Sending my sympathy to everyone who had/has to deal with weather, firecrackers, and other unpleasantness. That includes your fur babies.

Loving all the hilarity in today’s post and replies. I really want to party with that birb. But even more, I love the generosity of those emergency fosters–we need more people like them!

    • SoccerSue January 1, 2026 / 12:52 pm

A few weeks ago when we had flooding throughout Western Washington, the Everett animal shelter put out a call for emergency fosters, as they were afraid the shelter would flood. Within two hours, every animal had been fostered out. A few days later they posted on Facebook asking the fosters to share photos of how the animals were doing and the responses were absolutely precious! I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the animals were adopted permanently after that. πŸ˜€

How perfectly lovely! I hope all the critters found their forever homes.

    Happy New Year!

I’m barely sentient but still need to go “help” host a party (i.e., do all the work). I look forward to catching up later on all the posts from yesterday and today!

Bibi seems to be doing a bit better, though she felt compelled to do some creative peeing this morning. At least she was able to wait till we were outside to poop.

    Stay healthy, everyone!

    • DEBG January 1, 2026 / 2:10 pm

Sending continual good wishes for her full and speedy recovery. Good luck with your “helping.”

      • Ricky & Bibi's Mom January 1, 2026 / 6:46 pm

Party seems to have been a success. There’s a lot to be said for good cake and kind guests. I was able to leave before it was over. Grateful for medication!

Thanks for your good wishes for Bibi. Fingers crossed, I think I’m seeing progress.
