Weekend Open Thread

These are the times that try cats’ souls, and even our pets struggle under the weight of modern problems, prompting reader Amy F. to ask: “Any advice on how I get my Luna to destress and just relax?”

Happy Caturday! Apparently it is also International Zebra Day. 🦓

It is cold. Today’s low is 0F (that was in the wee hours of the morning). High 21. Currently 4. We got an email from the condo office about taking precautions to prevent freezing pipes; one of them is letting at least one faucet drip lukewarm water overnight. I don’t know how necessary this is in my unit. My kitchen and bathroom are interior rooms so the pipes are not on the exterior wall; I also have units below and behind me contributing to warming the building.

The news lately has been….a lot. I cannot seem to find a balance between knowing what is going on and watching every video on youtube. I’m trying to at least mix in some non-news-related stuff. I’m so behind on most of my podcasts and youtube channels about other topics.
Also I have a headache and I have to work this weekend.

On a happier note: My cousin’s grandson was diagnosed with leukemia back in late April 2025; he turned six during his initial weeks-long stay in the hospital. (That’s not the happy part.) This week we learned he is officially in full remission. He needs one more surgery to remove his chemo port (not sure if that’s done yet), and then he will get monthly blood work but will otherwise be able to get back to just being a kid. (They said one of the first things he asked about when he found out the news is when will he be able to see the nurses again. 💗)

    Oh, hey, look, doggies!

I’m so glad to hear about your cousin’s grandson. And the segment of the Top Ten Dogs video about pets being left in apartments when their owners were grabbed by ICE…blood-boiling stuff. 😠

So glad to hear the news about your cousin’s grandson! Sending positive thoughts, vibes, prayers his way.

I’ve been very fortunate in my building that the pipes never froze here. I have hot water heat and the radiators are on the outside walls. In some years, the landlord didn’t turn up the heat enough (we have no control over the radiators) so my apartment was cold, but at least there was enough water going through to keep the pipes from freezing.

Thank goodness for the good dogs and the good people!

Glad to hear your cousin’s son is in remission! woot! woot!

Great news about your cousin’s son being in remission!

Such great news about that little boy! High fives all around!

Poor Luna… I swear she’s about to let loose a Munch-like scream of existential angst.

Given the snowpocalypse engulfing the USA and Canada, I’m almost ashamed to say that the local weather is so mild a couple of flowers in my back yard have started to bloom. Yes, they’re annuals, but it still seems weird!

I’m also slightly ashamed to admit that as part of my re-working of “Peter Pan” I caused Michael Darling to be killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme (there were over 19,000 British fatalities).

On a personal note, I’m no longer taking the dreaded steroids and the double chin I developed a few months ago is much reduced. My eye surgery was a resounding success and I no longer have to attend check-ups.

    • Debg January 31, 2026 / 11:58 am

Congrats on all the good news. And enjoy the good weather, with its attendant flowers.

Thanks! And I have something else to look forward to – my pension starts next Thursday!

so glad to hear your good news.

Is this a prequel to Peter Panzerfaust?

Somebody call the SPCA that poor cat is definitely abused (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)

I have sad news to tell you, remember that cute the little stray cat I sent a photo in a few weeks ago “the princess”, I’m sad to say she’s disappeared.

She used to be watching though the patio door waiting for me in every morning to get her breakfast of wet food and she hasn’t come to eat in 2 weeks. I’m afraid the cold might have been too much for her, it’s been so very cold here going down -25C/-13F at night 😢

There’s always the chance that someone managed to catch her, all the other strays still come around to eat the dry food I put out for them, one of the black cat even has 2 new kittens with her, one calico and one dark tabby and they seem to be doing fine but boy are they skittish if they spot me looking they skedaddle in a flash.

Anyway I hope everyone has a good weekend.

Crossing our paws for the princess.

Poor Luna, life is so hard sometimes. Plus, based on the photos, – I hate to say this of any lady – but maybe 3 treats is just enough???

Good to hear the good news from Allein and Alice. Lord knows we need some. Like Alice, I’m ashamed to put out here that SoCal is probably the only warm spot in the mainlaind US right now. The Santa Ana winds have blown in and it looks like temps will be in the upper 70s/low 80s. I’ll try and send the warm weather eastward. Not too much going on this weekend. Just trying to recuperate from another long week. The excitement for the day is I’m off to buy a new mattress. Ya know ya old when thats your big thing for the weekend, lol. Tomorrow is errands, cleaning, some weekly meal prep, and hopefully some painting. The arthritis is my hands has been acting up so I haven’t painted in like a month but I really want to get back into it. Maybe I’ll just try painting left handed and see how that goes. Could make for some interesting techniques, and pictures. Stay warm everyone!

Try magnesium cream for your hands. I used it on my sore wrists and it actually helped!

  6. Tara January 31, 2026 / 11:40 am

Oh poor Luna, I’m sorry you live with such a meany! Maybe someone will sneak an extra one.

Freezing here too, impressive icicles hanging off my house. I’ve got lots of odds and ends to take care of – Might be a good day to take down the Christmas decorations! 😆 please don’t judge, I like them. After the good doggos video I think I will also sit down and make some donations to different places. I already started my rebellion hat and it’s going very quickly. I might be able to wear it on Monday. 🙂

Sending lots of love, strength, and warmth to all of you! ❤️❤️❤️

  7. Duckie 🐥 January 31, 2026 / 11:42 am

It’s cold, it’s wet, it’s the weekend and I’m grumpy. Why can wait for another day.
Luna, dear, come and visit me, and we will spend the day in my comfy chair eating as many treats as we want to.
Hubby and I were watching “The Sixth Day” yesterday and we got to discussing what might have happened if we had gotten Duckie cloned. I googled it and learned that, while the attitudes and behaviours might survive the cloning, memories probably wouldn’t. Hubby said “Great. She wouldn’t know me, but she’d still try to kill me.”
Our neighbourhood has bulb plants poking out of the ground. Assuming things stay the same, it’s going to be a riot of colour in a few weeks.
Have as good a weekend as possible, everyone, and stay safe, warm and dry.

  8. Debg January 31, 2026 / 12:05 pm

Luna, you can give us all lessons on letting it all hang out. I would love to blow raspberries on that tummy.

It isn’t cold here–we’ll get up to nearly 60 today–but right now it’s grey and it *looks* cold. I don’t want to go out for grocery shopping, but if I wait much longer, the store will be packed. So off I go. Will save the good dogs for my return!

Hugs to you all. Remember that we’re here for each other, when things feel overwhelming.

I’m so happy to read any good news from anyone!

On Tuesday I could finally take my kitties to the vet for their annual vaccination.
What I hadn’t seen coming was that Cicero went totally berserk. She bit the vet 🙁

It is not cold here any more, but it’s either snowing or frozen rain all day.

    Take care, all of you!

    • Debg January 31, 2026 / 12:39 pm

Cicero will have that bite put on her permanent record! Once Sevi got a little “hard to handle” at the vet after fasting all night. They marked his file, and we got asked about his viciousness every single visit afterwards, even the day he was put down.

      • Emsthemonster January 31, 2026 / 1:03 pm

Yes, that may happen. We will see next time.

I was dying of embarrassment and the vet was comforting me. He said Cice did not win a podium with this behaviour at the “bad kitties of the week” competition.
The worst behaving kitties: A Maine Coon kitty kicked off 3 small paintings off the wall. The second cat tore the curtain apart. The third one tore the owner’s jacket apart.
This is a small private vet office, he doesn’t even have an assistant, so the owners need to pay attention to every move of the pets.

Mutz (rhymes with “puts”) is back from the brink. And his humans have 9 days of Semester Break.

    • Debg January 31, 2026 / 2:57 pm

Great news for all of you!
