Weekend Open Thread

Welcome to the Caturday chat! If you want a snack, you’ll have to get past Jacques, from reader Tara O., because he picked the fruit basket for a nap.

Jacques can sleep where he likes. Besides, there’s nothing tastier than a nice warm, hairy tangerine!

This is my first weekend as a pensioner, and even though I won’t receive any money for a couple of weeks I still feel mightily relieved not to be relying on savings any more. I was so elated that I didn’t bother taking a new photo for my bus pass, instead using the one on my voter ID that makes me look like a thumbnail for a YouTube true crime video – something like “Grandma Finally Snapped” or “Killer Identified After 30 Years”…

You should see my passport photo. I look like I either just got sent to prison or just released 🤪 😂😂😂 Hopefully it won’t cause problems at customs, they’ll just think “Boy, she definitely needs a vacation”. Enjoy your new status and all the perks that come with it.

    • belphebe February 7, 2026 / 10:53 am

      Congratulations on becoming a pensioner.

I love your description of your photo. I have a photo taken years ago – at Hallowe’en – where I’m sitting under a sign displaying the word “Horror”. I must have been saying something when the picture was taken but my face definitely matches the word. I’ve often said that I’d use that picture on my dating profile, if I ever set one up.

      Jacques is very handsome.

        Thank you!

    • Tara February 7, 2026 / 11:23 am

Congrats on the new status! Enjoy!

    • Debg February 7, 2026 / 1:37 pm

Hope you enjoyed your birthday. And your new status must be wonderful! Enjoy!

I’m reasonably certain that there are no official photos of me that don’t look like a mugshot, minus the measurement bars in the background.

Thank you all for your kind words about Mutz this week. We miss him terribly, but we are so thankful that he passed peacefully during my semester break, so we could devote time and our feelings to the Boy, the Master, our Buddy, our Bunny, our Mutzi, our one and only Mutz.

    • Debg February 7, 2026 / 1:38 pm

Constantly sending you hugs and healing purrs. We all loved sweet Mutz too, because we saw him through your eyes.

Jacques looks very comfy, maybe I should try sleeping on oranges.

You know I started feeding stray cats last summer but this morning it wasn’t cats eating the kibble on my balcony it was 2 black birds! Not sure why they prefer kibble to the seeds in the bird feeders we have for them but they are welcome to it.

I swear my backyard is turning into an all you can eat wildlife restaurant and I love every minute of it 🐦‍⬛ 🐈‍⬛ 🦝🦨

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Is it my imagination, or is there garlic in that basket with the lovely Jacques and the warm, hairy tangerine? And some sort of trivet, or dish sorter?

    • Tara February 7, 2026 / 11:24 am

Yes, garlic, sweet potatos, a squash, limes, lemons, oranges and clementines. Oh, and an ice tray (the dark grey thing) I just chucked in there to get it out of the way. 🙂

      • Ricky & Bibi's Mom February 7, 2026 / 11:48 am

        I still can’t find Waldo …

Hey, Jacques is providing a service. With all the cold weather, he’s ensuring that your fruit & veg stay warm & eatable. 😉 And such a handsome boy too.

So far today has been a productive day. Already vacuumed and mopped the floor. Plus washed and rehung the living room curtains. Now that the chores are (mostly) out of the way, I can do whatever I want today. I think that will include renewing my library card, dropping off stuff at Goodwill, then probably shopping at said Goodwill. Oh, yeah, somewhere in there is breakfast, lol. Only 2 more rooms to clean/organize but need to get the bags for Goodwill out first. And for my room, I’ll wait to either Tuesday night or Wednesday morning as that’s when my new bed gets delivered! Why move stuff twice. Work smarter not harder! Have a good weekend and stay warm if the polar blast is visiting your area.

I’m sure it’s just the way the light is hitting him, but somehow Jacques looks a little deflated in the first pic.

I’m tired. My head hurts. My anxiety level lately is getting unbearable. I think my washing machine is dying (it was here when I moved in in 2011, the previous owner left me the receipts for the major appliances, which I found recently, and it was bought in 2006).

    But the dogs were good…
    “right outta his casing…” 😄

    • allein 🐾 February 7, 2026 / 10:56 am

Need to channel my inner Mabel, if she’s in there…

(I shared this on the links post yesterday but I’m sharing it again.)

    • Tara February 7, 2026 / 11:26 am

Oh dear, he does look “deflated” – probably because he is. He’s down to 8lbs from 16. My sweet old man. The vet said, “he can eat whatever he wants.” Jacques is just fine with that.

      • allein 🐾 February 7, 2026 / 11:27 am

        💗

      • Georgiana February 7, 2026 / 11:45 am

Yes give him what ever he wants ❤️

      • Ricky & Bibi's Mom February 7, 2026 / 11:50 am

Aww. I remember that phase with Ricky. As long as it’s not poisonous or an allergen, any calorie is a good calorie. Bon appétit, chère Jacques!

Oh, and did you know that snow globes can evaporate?

I have one that was on top of my cabinet above the stove (maybe not the best place for it…) and I happened to look up the other night and noticed that there was some white stuff on the inside of the glass, and then realized that there was no liquid in it. So I took it down and used my phone camera to see what the piece of wood under it looked like before taking that out (it was just a short piece of 2×4 that I used to raise the displayed stuff up above the lip of the cabinet top). There’s a squiggle of dried grayish goop that I’m guessing is a mixture of whatever non-water ingredient is in there (probably glycerin, says google) and “snow” particles that dripped out. Don’t see any obvious openings so I doubt it all happened at once; I guess the seal failed and it leaked/evaporated over time. The base is ceramic with flowers and inside the globe is a carousel horse with matching flowers; the disk the horse sits on collapsed slightly into the base so the horse is kind of sitting on its tail. It’s roughly 30 years old (one of my friends gave it to me for my birthday one year in college) so I guess it had a good run. I wonder how long it’s been like that…

It’s from the San Francisco Music Box Company. The music box part still works.

    • Debg February 7, 2026 / 1:51 pm

Right outta his casing has me in tears of laughter.

      • Debg February 7, 2026 / 9:45 pm

        Oh Thistle! You’re adorable.

  7. Tara February 7, 2026 / 11:22 am

    Hi All,
Happy Caturday! It is absolutely blustery here. It snowed a bit last night, so all of the dirty snow is white again. No complaint there.
I’m waiting for a handy man to come and take a look at my front door for repairs. A locksmith came Monday night and got it functioning again. But it needs some repairs to the threshold. I also need to go do a big shopping run. I have plenty of food, but none of it goes together. Maybe I’m not hungry enough. 😆
Cleaning, lesson plans, laundry, and other projects are all on the docket for the weekend.

    • allein 🐾 February 7, 2026 / 11:33 am

I guess it snowed a little here; there’s some white on my car, mostly the hood, windshield, and a little on the roof. Looks frozen but it’s a little too thick to just be frost. The sun is on it but it will have to compete with the 9° air temperature if it wants to melt it. Thank dog I don’t have to shovel it. I have nowhere to go today, though I should probably check the mail, since I didn’t do it yesterday. But I will wait until today’s mail comes. Will try to do some decluttering so I can take out trash at the same time. The next few nights will be super cold again. Dreading my gas bill this month…

A shivery morning to all. Jacques looks very comfortable in his sunbeam there.
It’s hubby’s and my anniversary today. 18 years and counting.
We’re supposed to have snow for Ash Wednesday. I’m vaguely amused.
I’m waiting to hear back about some tests I had early this week. I get bloodwork every three months, and the results go to three different doctors. I did the bloodwork in January, and all three doctors, two of them specialists, sent me for more bloodwork, all for similar tests. So I’m trying to be patient, until I find out why.
Hubby has a four day weekend, and we’re going to start spring cleaning.
    Have a good weekend, everyone.

    • allein 🐾 February 7, 2026 / 11:52 am

      Happy Anniversary! 🥂🍾

    • Debg February 7, 2026 / 1:42 pm

Happy anniversary. We’re crossing our paws for good news from the bloodwork.

Happy anniversary. I hope your news is good news.

Jacques looks so content in his sunbeam. I always feel bad if I startle the cats from their sunshiney naps.

I’m late here today because I did my errands chores first. We’re having unseasonably warm weather in Colorado. It will probably get up near 70F today, and people are wearing shorts. Sadly, I have talked myself out of walks around the reservoir for the past few days. Feeling under the weather today, so if a nap helps, I’ll finally get outside today.

Hope you all are staying warm and dry in this weird winter.

    • Tara February 7, 2026 / 2:22 pm

I hope you aren’t coming down with something and that the nap does you good!

And – yes, disturbing kitties from sunbeams is hard. Jacques is currently zonked out (twitching dreaming and all) in the bathroom on the radiant heated tiles. I really need to clean the floor in there, but I just can’t disturb him.

Happy Caturday! Must be something about the upcoming Friday the 13th causing appliances to conk out- we had to do an emergency refrigerator purchase this morning. We pulled the old (almost 18 yrs) one out to clean behind it and discovered a huge spot that had rusted completely through the metal behind the freezer section, with solid ice in the middle of the spot. I think the water hose going to it must have leaked onto it. Who knows how long it’s been like that- probably been a couple years since we last pulled it out. I’m just glad it hasn’t flooded or burned our house down! The good news is we were able to purchase from a family-owned appliance shop, with essentially the same pricing as the big chain stores, and a very reasonable price to deliver and set it up (and remove the old one), even though we’re 45 minutes away from them. We’re already planning to use them when we have to replace more appliances in the next couple of years.

It’s been rainy here today and Julius has finally decided he doesn’t care to get soaking wet, so he’s been inside sleeping most of the day. We don’t have a fruit bowl, but if we did I’m sure that’s where he’d be. @Duckie- please send a little snow down here if you get it. I put snow tires on my car this winter and I don’t think I’m going to get any use out of them.

Go Seahawks!! I’ll actually be watching the game tomorrow since my team is in it. And I don’t know any Bad Bunny songs, but I’m looking forward to dancing around my living room during halftime, lol!

  11. Ricky & Bibi's Mom February 8, 2026 / 2:00 pm

Puppy Bowl XXII is about to begin! Yay!

    • allein 🐾 February 8, 2026 / 2:19 pm

      I’m watching! I want Apple!

I turned on Animal Planet and my cable box told me it’s not authorized! Since when?!?! Luckily it’s on like twelve different channels. I’m watching on TruTV (which is the next channel up).

      • Ricky & Bibi's Mom February 8, 2026 / 4:41 pm

I actually subscribed to Discovery+ just so I could watch it. What a nail-biter!

        • Ricky & Bibi's Mom February 8, 2026 / 4:51 pm

I couldn’t decide between Gold Nugget and Oscar for cuteness. And I couldn’t pick a team at all! I did call the MVP correctly, though. (Not putting a spoiler in case anyone wants to watch later.)

The number of dogs with food names was interesting.

I root for Team Fluff…mostly because my favorite color is blue.

            • Ricky & Bibi's Mom February 8, 2026 / 5:37 pm

I usually root for Team Fluff, but I liked so many dogs on Team Ruff this time I just rooted for Puppy Bowl! 🙂
