Bonus Duck Rescue!
Reader Sharon G. reunited a lost baby ducking with its family!
Hubby rescued a duckling from a storm drain and I had the honour of returning it to mommy
Go, Duckie!
Pretty kitty. Rainy Caturday.
So The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (and The Late Show in any form) is no more. I am sad that it’s over, and angry at the reason it’s over. I know Colbert will be fine but I will miss it (and Rescue Dog Rescue, to tie it into The Cute). I hope he lands somewhere else that I can still watch.
On the upside, they auctioned off a bunch of stuff (memorabilia from the set, ties he wore, tickets to the last show…) and raised almost 2.5 million dollars (!!) for World Central Kitchen. (When he presented the check to Chef Jose Andres, he said he was going to do a giant novelty check but banks don’t like to cash them so he made it a miniscule check instead, which he then put under a microscope so we could see the amount. Then he started to give it to Chef Jose and told him not to lose it, then stopped and said he’d put it in an envelope for him…and pulled out a giant-novelty-check-sized envelope with “To: WCK” written on it.)
On the second-to-last show he finally took The Colbert Questionert himself, administered by a different celebrity, including his wife, Evie; Billy Crystal, Weird Al Yankovic, Robert DeNiro, Josh Brolin, Martha Stewart, and others, each asking a different question (the segment was hosted by John Dickerson, who also did the last question). They also put up an extended version that’s almost an hour long. We finally learned what number he was thinking of all these years (it was 3).
The last guest was Paul McCartney. You may recall that the Beatles made their US debut at that same theater back in 1964 (which, coincidentally, is the year Stephen was born; his birthday was last week, too, May 13th). Stephen said two of his sisters were at that concert, and they were there for the last Late Show. They sang “Hello, Goodbye” (with the Late Show’s band, former bandleader Jon Batiste, and Elvis Costello) before Paul and Stephen turned off the lights. (More cute: Stephen’s dog Benny, who often came to the set with him, has a cameo at the very end.
End of an era.
The ending was great. I made it all the way to the end before tearing up when Paul flipped the switch.
But at least the dogs were good (even if one of them might actually be a seal).
I will miss Stephen Colbert he was my favourite of all the late night hosts since Johnny Carson. (yes I’m that old)
Thanks for the recap on the Colbert show. Watching it is on the list of things to do this weekend. I’m looking forward to it even more now.
I usually would watch the episode playlist on youtube on my phone while I work but I watched the last one on demand on my TV when I got home yesterday. Thought about watching it live but I was in the office yesterday and it didn’t end until almost 1am. (If I worked from home I might have done it since I could have slept an extra couple hours.)
The “Burning Down the House” performance with David Byrne from earlier in the week was a lot of fun, too.
Loved that David Byrne performance. It’s the only clip I’ve had time to watch so far.
Fun fact: when I worked in NYC in the 80s, my boss lived in the same building as David Byrne.
Truly inspiring. What a class act.
Never fear: Stephen Colbert has started his own YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@colbert
Yay!
Subscribed! Thanks, Thérèse!
Thanks for the recap, Allein. I’ve spent the past two days watching the last episode and catching up on some I missed, and … well, grieving is the closest word, even though it seems extreme.
Hurrah for saving ducklings!
Yay Duckie! You did a good deed. ❤️
That is some impressive and magnificent floof on the cat. Yeah for the duckie rescue!!!! Guess my place isn’t the only one with babies getting themselves in odd places. Thankfully there’s been wonderful humans to help them out. I’m pleased to report on my end it is now 2 days without a possum in the pool. Fingers crossed the streak continues. So many good dogs this week, it was hard to pick a favorite; I loved them all! Never watched the Colbert show but still sad to see it go, especially under the circumstances. Won’t say anymore so as to avoid dragging politics into this space, but just ummmph. Talk about a list of stars to end on a high note, I think there were more stars there than at an award show!
Happy long weekend to all my US peeps! Not much going on this weekend, going to see the new Mandalorian movie at some point. Still playing catch up on laundry and cleaning after being gone those 2 weeks. One of my grand neices is graduating high school this weekend so looking forward to photos from my brother or SIL later. A friend’s daughter graduates high school next week, then a grand nephew after that. Tis the season I guess! Only going to our friend’s graduation as it’s in town. Plus from what I’m hearing about my grand nephew’s and who’s invited, it sounds like a lot of family drama that I just don’t want to deal with. Only reason to go is to grab the popcorn and watch the show, lol. Enjoy the weekend everyone!!
Glad you’re not still rescuing possums! Hope those two littles are getting back on their paws.
Kudos to Duckie and her husband for saving the baby duck!
I had an appointment with my doctor on Thursday and it was a case of good news bad news, the good news was that my iron and vitamin E levels were back to normal so I don’t have to take medications for those anymore and my cholesterol numbers are still OK.
The bad news is that both my A1C (blood sugar) and my blood pressure are higher so the doctor is hiking up my medications and I have to take more test in September.
I also have an appointment on Monday for my eyes, they do one every years to check for damages since I’m diabetic, finger’s crossed everything is fine.
Have a good weekend everyone!
And it’s Bill Kurtis’s last episode of Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! today. 🙁
At least he’s going by choice.
Yay for all the animal rescues!
Am planning to catch lunch with my sister, then we go to watch the local ballet company’s Aspirants in recital. A good way to ignore the gloomy weather. Then it’s off to buy more kibble (the proper kind!) for Nikolai Devinovich & Ekaterina Velikaya because they have chosen to hate the free kibble that I won in a store raffle. Life with cats…
Happy weekend, everyone. Floofy white cat, your tail deserves its own box.
The duckling rescue was possibly the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The tiny fluff ball did not want me to leave after, and was going back and forth between mommy and me. It actually sat on my foot at one point, and I was afraid it was so new that it had bonded with me. I burst into tears, and hubby had to lead me away. Baby duck went with mommy, though.
Wet baby duck feet on human bare skin is truly an amazing experience.
Am currently dealing with a horrible spring cold that seems to be making its way through our local population.
Spending the weekend on the couch under a blanket.
Have a great weekend, everyone.
I noticed the duckling didn’t seem to want to go with mommy duck at first. You did a good thing, though, and I love that mama duck came right up to you, like she knew you wouldn’t hurt her.
You’re my new hero, Duckie! Also it was nice to put a face to the comments from all these years.
You done good. Real good. A true Woman of Cutetropolis!
The duck rescue was fabulous – as was Box Cat’s tail!
I’ve decided against making my proposed visit to the Bayeaux Tapestry exhibition into a 2/3 night stay in London with a theatre visit (preferably to the Royal Opera House’s “Parsifal”) thrown in. Although ROH ticket prices haven’t been announced yet I’m fairly sure even the cheapest seats will be ruinously expensive. Instead I’ll buy a mid-afternoon ticket for the exhibition, get an early train to London and spend most of the day looking round. It must be over thirty years since I was there last.
I’m glad you’re still going to see the tapestry, even you have to forgo the opera.
As a consolation prize I’ve decided to spend a few days in Haworth in late August or early September. It’s not far away and my usual budget B&B is opposite the church!
Happy Caturday, everyone! And for those of us celebrating Memorial Day, happy long weekend. Thanks and all honor to those have served or are serving.
Love that big floofy tail–mine have all had sleek pointy ones, not the feather duster variety. And that duck rescue is great! Folks have been doing a lot of wild rescues lately around here.
The weather in CO could not be more beautiful, after several days of big rain (which we desperately need). Still recovering from a late night on Tuesday, when I got to see Indigo Girls–they were fantastic and I’m glad I went. But concerts on a school night are tough!
I ran my errands and now I get to play. My list of craft projects for this weekend seems impossibly long, but even if I don’t finish them all, I’ll enjoy.
Hugs to you all.
Catting-edge technology from Japan…
That is fantastic! Now I need one for my cats.
I too, am back from running errands – in the rain. I really didn’t want to but my biggest home project is keeping Jacques fed. I think I mentioned he is now in stage 2 kidney disease so he needs the $3.50/can renal support food. That is a stretching my budget so I try to supplement his snacks with baby food, canned sardines (Trader Joe’s has one packed in water) other cat treats as I can find them. He’s super picky about the Churus and one is not enough anyway. I was out of everything so I had no choice but to venture forth.
I also want to start a new fiber project – a crocheted raffia bag. But of course no yarn/craft store in Philadelphia carries such an item, so I am in a conundrum where to purchase. Online – of course, but from an independent store (much more expensive) or the awful monopoly of all things purchasable and I can get it tomorrow. While I’m deciding, I’m going to clean out one of my yarn baskets. Maybe that will help bring clarity.
Happy weekend – especially those of us with an extra day.
I’ve seen raffia in dollars stores in the party section, and also in stores that deal in party supplies.
